The Bangladesh Cricket Board have appointed South African Russell Domingo as the head coach of the national team on a two-year contract.

Domingo will arrive in the country on 21 August to take charge of the team, the BCB said in a release on Saturday, 17 August. He takes over from Steve Rhodes, who had his tenure cut short after Bangladesh failed to reach the heights they expected in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2019.

Domingo, 44, has no experience playing first-class cricket, but gained a reputation as a coach from an early age. He has been at the helm of South Africa's under 19 and senior teams, and was in charge when they reached the semi-finals of the ICC World T20 2014 and the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2015.

"We have been very impressed with his passion and coaching philosophy," BCB president Nazmul Hassan said in a statement. "He has a clear idea of what is required to take the team forward.”

Domingo said his focus would be on developing the next generation of players from the country. “I have followed Bangladesh’s progress with keen interest and I am extremely excited to assist the team in reaching the goals that they are capable of.

“I look forward to continuing the ongoing development of current players whilst also looking towards the future and developing some new bright stars from within the talent pool of Bangladesh cricket,” he said.

CSA WISHES DOMINGO WELL IN HIS NEW POSITION

CRICKET SOUTH AFRICA (CSA) has wished its South Africa A head coach, Russell Domingo, well on his appointment as head coach of the Bangladesh national side.

The appointment was announced by the Bangladesh Cricket Board today.

“Congratulations to Russell on this exciting new challenge in his career,” commented CSA Acting Director of Cricket Corrie van Zyl. “Russell has kept us in the loop throughout this process and, although we are sorry to lose his services, we wish him well and know that he will be yet another one of the coaches who have come successfully through our development system to coach at provincial or franchise level and end up at the very top.

“There are many names of coaches that spring to mind including Duncan Fletcher, Graham Ford, Mickey Arthur and Adrian Birrell. Gary Kirsten’s first significant coaching position was as batting consultant to the Warriors when Russell was in charge there and he has gone on to be a World Cup winner.

“We appreciate the services Russell has given to South African cricket over an extended period of time, including being our head coach at one stage.”

“I am really looking forward to the new challenge of being head coach to Bangladesh,” commented Domingo. I feel that the time is right for me to move on and coach again at senior international level. At the same time I have every confidence that I leave South African cricket in good hands.”

Malibongwe Maketa will take charge as the interim Head Coach of the SA A team until such time that the position is advertised and appointed.

World Sports Betting Cape Cobras head coach Ashwell Prince will now oversee the squad at the spin bowling camp in India.

Surprised at this.

He hardly set the world alight when he was in charge at South Africa.

Almost the case of having a Western coach for the sake of it.

Bangladesh have an affinity for appointing foreign coaches even if they are coaches who are not highly rated or wouldn't even get positions as batting or bowling coaches in other teams. Whatmore is probably the only exception and Hathurasingha, who was not particularly highly rated ended up being their best coach but other than that guys like Jamie Siddons, Shane Jurgenen, Steve Rhodes, Richard Pybus would struggle to be head-coaches of most top teams.

It's pretty clear why they have appointed him: there are a lack of credible local alternatives and he's the only foreigner willing to be based full-time in Bangladesh.

They should've continued with Steve Rhodes.

Not sure how much effective Domingo will be. Let's see.

I think, issues with Rhodes was mostly cultural - BD players couldn't cope with the way Rhodes interacted. Otherwise, he was quite good for developing players and he was willing to continue as well.

Domingo is the latest brand of Cricket coaches with very little or no cricket career (he never played even in FC Cricket), but with lots of technical knowledge. Starting at 21, he worked through his way to a Level 4 Coach by his 20s and he comes with lots of functional experience actually - he has managed SA National team for 4+ years, was deputy to SAF Head Coach (Kiresten) for over a year and he has been SAF A coach for 4-5 years now, either side of his National duty since 2010. He had been in coaching since his early 20s, starting as SAF Academy Coach, he brought SAF U19 team to 2004 WC (IN BD), and since then had been involved in SAF cricket coaching in different levels.

What I came to know that, BCB was looking for an younger Coach this time for a better chemistry with the players and Hesson was their first choice. But, they had a cut-off date and Hesson kept prolonging. Kirsten being the consultant of BCB, it was expected that Domingo will get some role in BD Cricket this time. Also, the support staff of BD Team is now almost entirely South African, and all of them have worked under or with (Under Kirsten) Domingo in past - Batting Coach McKenzie, Pace bowing coach Langeveldt, Fielding coach Cook, which must have worked in his favour. Domingo is been allowed to bring physio, trainer and analyst from SAF as well, and he will be given significant authority on team selection. Also, I read that they are changing the structure, establishing authority of National Coach on A Team as well.

Domingo has been appointed for 2 years, but I think they'll keep him till 2023 WC, unless something really goes wrong - it's not easy to find qualified coaches with adequate experience these days, particularly for Franchise cricket and unless the domestic system produces the players, I don't think National Coach alone can do much. Next 4 years is going to be extremely critical as we'll have to replace at least half of the squad by next WC and it's important that Domingo gets adequate time (4 years) for the transition.

Good luck to him & BD Team.

I think I read somewhere Hesson's salary request was quite high too, and wasn't even committed to being in the country too long either.

In contrast Domingo was very enthusiastic and presented a detailed plan and vision, heck he was the only coach to come to BD for the interview. He seems to be committed to be living in BD too. I think these are all the qualities BD would love to have in a coach and is quite a win to find a coach like him.

Russell Domingo, the new Bangladesh coach, wants to use the T20 tri-series at home, which also features Afghanistan and Zimbabwe, as part of a roadmap towards the ultimate goal of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2020 in Australia.

Bangladesh, ranked 10th in the world in Twenty20 Internationals, begin their tri-series campaign against Zimbabwe on Friday, 13 September, in Mirpur, and the coach hopes to use the games as a chance to try out new talent.

"We need to set our World Cup roadmap from this series," Domingo told reporters on Thursday. "I think there are 20 games now, which sounds a lot but is not as many because you always are not going to make it. Two or three games might be rained off and we might end up playing 15 or 16 games leading to the World Cup.

"So let's start planning because we've got some places to develop prior to the World Cup and try and give them as much experience under pressure as we possibly can.

"I will try to make a difference from now. I am trying to give some inputs. I am sitting down with visuals of the players and trying to work on areas that need improvement."

Domingo admitted that the team's strongest format was 50-over cricket. But with their next one-day international a while away, he hoped to prioritise Test and T20 cricket for now.

"When it comes to white-ball cricket, Bangladesh can beat anybody on the given day," he said. "We've got some world-class performers in our side. Just look at the experience of the team. In the 50-over World Cup, Bangladesh were the second-most experienced team. So there is no shortage of quality and no shortage of experience in this particular side. I think if we play to our potential, we will be very hard to beat."

Bangladesh's strength, especially at home, has been spin. However, they were beaten at their own game by Afghanistan, whose spinners won them the one-off Test last week. The coach agreed that, given the demands of the T20 format, the team needed to develop its pace attack.

"This is a different format and different conditions, and there is a World Cup in Australia," he said, "so you need to play some fast bowlers. I think it's really important."

Newly-appointed spin consultant and former New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori is expected to join the Tigers during the preparation camp ahead of the upcoming India tour in November, informed Bangladesh Cricket Board’s (BCB) cricket operations committee chairman Akram Khan yesterday.

The BCB, on July 27, appointed Vettori as national team’s spin bowling consultant until the ICC World T20 next year in Australia, and the Kiwi spin legend is expected to join the Tigers’ camp on October 25. Bangladesh is scheduled to play two Tests and three T20Is against India from November.

“We will start our preparation camp for the upcoming India series from October 25 and he (Vettori) will be available from the start of the camp as he is coming before that,” Akram told reporters at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur yesterday.

The 40-year-old will be available for around 100 days in his role with Bangladesh which includes preparation phase, series’ and tournaments including the tour of India, Asia Cup and the tour of New Zealand in 2020.

The BCB is eyeing former South Africa batsman Neil McKenzie as the team’s full-time batting coach instead of his present role as white-ball batting consultant. Akram informed that McKenzie will join the team for the first Test in India.

“McKenzie will come and he will stay during the first Test. We are trying to have him for both red ball and white ball game. It will be good for our team. He will stay for the first Test and we are discussing for the second Test too. We have contracted him just for T20s and one-dayers. We don’t have contract for Tests, but we are discussing it,’’ he said.

Meanwhile, Akram added that the BCB will take a decision regarding tour of Pakistan by the next two weeks, saying that security of the team is the first priority for the board. The Sri Lanka national team is currently in Pakistan for the first time since the militant attack in 2009.

“This is not just a decision of the board. We haven’t decided whether we will play in Dubai or Pakistan. We are discussing, but we will decide in the next 10-15 days. This decision will be finalised in board meeting and the green signal has to come from both sides (the cricket board and the government),’’ Akram added.

Bangladesh stripped head coach Russell Domingo of his role overseeing the Twenty20 side and told him to focus on Test and one-day international cricket, just days before the Asia Cup.

Bangladesh Cricket Board president Nazmul Hassan said that former Indian cricketer Sridharan Sriram, named last week as the technical consultant, will look after the T20 side. "Russell Domingo won't be part of the T20 set-up. He will be with ODIs and Tests," Nazmul told a press briefing in Dhaka. "There's no 'head coach' for the T20 side," he added.

"We have a batting coach, a spin coach, fast bowling coach and fielding coach. We also have the captain. We also have a technical consultant for T20s. He will give the game plan," he said.

Domingo, a 47-year-old South African, was appointed Bangladesh's head coach in August 2019, initially on a two-year contract. The BCB last year extended it until November 2023. But Bangladesh have struggled in T20s under Domingo, failing to win a game in the Super 12 stage of the World Cup in the United Arab Emirates last year.

They have won just two of their last 15 T20s and suffered their maiden series loss to Zimbabwe earlier this month. Domingo said the BCB's decision to separate the roles was a "great" idea. "It gives me nice focus on the Test match and 50-overs stuff," he said.

"We have had some great results and bad results in T20s," he said. "I don't think it is a bad idea to make a fresh approach in T20s.

"It is not about me," he added. "I am all for making the team better."

Bangladesh leave on Tuesday for the Asia Cup in the UAE, where they will compete in Group B alongside Afghanistan and Sri Lanka. The tournament starts on Saturday.

All-rounder Shakib Al Hasan meanwhile said that he was more motivated than ever after being reappointed T20 skipper last week. "I will try to help the team as much as possible with whatever experience I have," Shakib told reporters.

"I believe we are a good side. If we can make the best use of our resources and we can do it once or twice, you will realise we have the ability."
"Even if we lose a game, we should make sure to either drag the game into the final over or compete so that people can see we are improving."

Bangladesh will play a tri-nation tournament in New Zealand involving the hosts and Pakistan in October before they travel to Australia for the T20 World Cup.

“I was told you need to scream at players and be strict”: Bangladesh Test-ODI coach Domingo hits back at BCB
Russell Domingo has been relieved of his head coach duties for Bangladesh’s T20 side.

After the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) stripped Russell Domingo of his role as the head coach of the T20 side, the 47-year-old took a jibe at the BCB for creating too much outside noise which in turn prevents the growth of players.

Just days before the Asia Cup, Domingo was directed to focus on Test and one-day international cricket, and the reigns were handed over to technical director S Sriram, a former India player who was assistant coach of Australia and is currently the spin coach of RCB in IPL.

BCB administrators reportedly dubbed his methods unsuitable for the team and also said that he lacked aggression.

Under the tutelage of Domingo, who was appointed Bangladesh’s head coach in August 2019, Bangladesh has struggled in the T20s. It has won just two of its last 15 T20s and suffered its maiden series loss to Zimbabwe earlier this month.

However, hitting back at the board Domingo said,” “Everyone has his own opinion and it was disappointing that they were telling it to others but did not tell me anything. I haven’t read it but people came and told me. But I am happy with what I have done with the T20 team and I am not worried about anything.”

“I won’t say that I was shocked (after being snubbed) but as a coach, you have to be ready for everything and if the team is losing you cannot guarantee your future. I know there are a lot of questions about the team and considering that it (my removal from T20s) wasn’t totally unexpected,” Domingo was quoted saying to a leading Bangladeshi Daily, Prothom Alo, on Wednesday.

“I felt we were playing good T20 cricket. After that in 2021, World Cup boys could not handle outside pressure,” he added.

“In the last eight to 10 years, cricketers did not get this kind of coaching and they cannot think anything on their own because the board scolds them and the director of coaching (Khaled Mahmud) scolds them and they were told in every step what they need to do and this is the biggest challenge of Bangladesh cricket because cricketers cannot think anything on their own,” he further added.

“I did not want to give them total freedom but I don’t think you can have big benefit by screaming because when you are making a mistake if you criticize them harshly you cannot get the best out of them and I didn’t want to do that (criticize) because cricketers need time to learn from their mistakes and take their own decisions. But they cannot do that because they are always been scolded and given suggestions.

“You can ask the cricketers I wanted to have a calm atmosphere in the dressing room and wanted to develop cricketers with clarity but so many people are making noise from close quarters that it was not possible. All the time I was told that you need to scream at them and you have to be strict and that is the way to deal with the cricketer and I am sure earlier coaches were like that but they hardly did anything in T20 because Bangladesh won only one game in T20s and I went with them in one World Cup. A lot of coaches went with them earlier but nothing happened so wanted to walk in a different way,” he said.

BCB to seek explanation from Domingo

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) will serve a notice to head coach Russell Domingo to clarify his statements that cricketers are subjected to scolding and shouting round the clock.

He came up with this disclosure in an interview with Prothom Alo that was published on Wednesday. The cricket operations chairman of Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) Jalal Yunus confirmed the matter.

At his office, Jalal Yunush told the newsmen that “I have informed the matter to the [board] president (Nazmul Hassan). He (Domingo) should be served notice to clarify his claims. We will look into the matter. Then the decision would be made about him.”

Refuting the allegation that cricketers are scolded, he said, "I don’t even talk to the cricketers during the series. Let me know first whether he indicated it to me or someone else. However, it is not a positive matter. He will have to clarify his statements. The languages he used [that cricketers are subjected to rebuking] are objectionable."

Earlier, BCB removed Domingo from the T20 format ahead of two major tournaments – Asia Cup and T20 World Cup. He, however, has been retained for the Test and ODI teams.

Newly appointed technical consultant Sridharan Sriram will provide all the plans for the T20 team, said BCB president Nazmul Hassan Papon, adding that Sriram's role is not defined as T20 head coach.

If true, real lack of professionalism this from some senior officials of BCB.

Its a national team not a franchise tournament where non related people can be creating the noise and disturb the team environment.

If they appointed Russell then he should have been allowed to take team forward the way he believes they can grow.

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) chief executive Nizamuddin Chowdhury clarified the recent reports over Test and ODI head coach Russell Domingo leaving the role. The board explained how the coach was misrepresented by the media.

After Bangladesh’s poor run in T20 Internationals having won just two in 13 games since the T20 World Cup last year, BCB ousted the South Africa coach from the shortest format.

Former Indian player Sridharan Sriram was appointed the technical director to look into the affairs of the T20I side, thus bringing split coaching in the national team.

Domingo recently took a dig at the BCB for making too much noise and preventing cricketers from growing in T20Is. The BCB sought clarification from the South Africa-born coach over his comments. To exacerbate things, reports of Domingo resigning from his role were doing around the corner.

BCB said that Domingo was embarrassed with what all has fold up and he was misrepresented in the media.

“We are seeing it and I feel the whole thing is a misrepresentation. Today we spoke at length with Russell and he is embarrassed because of the way things are coming into the media he is a bit awkward with that and that is why he requested you that it should not come in this way,” Nizamuddin told reporters at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Friday.

“Because it is a relationship between employee and employer and we can have misunderstood and so to avoid it (misunderstanding) we spoke at length with Russell and even you wanted to know. The thing is that it (that news) is not right. And I am repeating that two parties had a miscommunication,” he further said.

Bangladesh won 19 out of 46 T20Is under Domingo with notable victories including – 4-1 and 3-2 bilateral series win against Australia and New Zealand respectively, just before the 2021 T20 World Cup.

Bangladesh’s recent bilateral defeats to Zimbabwe in both T20Is and ODIs with the margin of 2-1 drew a lot of flak for the team management.
