Out of Sachin, Lara, Kallis and Dravid, who had the highest average vs Australia in test matches when both Warne and Mcgrath were playing for Australia? Does anyone have the stats? Just curious

So Sachin and Tendulkar were two separate players ? Anway, on a more serious note, I think it's Sachin.

Lara was the best, his performance in the 1999 series was among the greatest performance by a batsman in history.

Sachin would come a close second. India played three full series against them in 1999 in Australia (Tendulkar was the man of the series), 2001 in India (tendulkar was the highest scorer in three of the six Indian innings) and 2004 in India, when Tendulkar failed to make an impact, as he was hurried into the squad nursing tennis elbow since India had their back to the walls in the series.

Dravid was strictly OK against them, he was good in the 2001 series but failed in 1999 and 2004 when he was in good knick. I havn't followed Kallis's career closely during that period so i wouldn't know.

For the record Warne considers Tendulkar the greatest batsman he has ever faced while McGrath held the same opinion for a large part of his career, but rated Lara slightly ahead of Tendulkar in 2007.

It has to be Lara followed by Sachin. Sachin hasn't played against Australia too many times when Warne/McGrath both played. The two series that come to mind is 1999/00 and 2001. There was a one of test in mid nineties which India won. Warne did not play that, McGrath was there in the Australian team. Sachin failed in that game. In 1998 Warne played and McGrath did not. 2003/04 both of them did not play. 2004/5 series which Australia won, both McGrath and Warne played and Sachin was injured. Played two tests and failed in 3 inning and scored a fifty on that joke of a Mumbai pitch in the second innings.

From highest to lowest:

Sachin (avg 51 home, 56 away):
http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/en...er_involve=2101;template=results;type=batting

Lara (avg 61 home, 42 away):
http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/en...er_involve=2101;template=results;type=batting

Kallis (avg 28 home, 48 away):

Dravid (avg 42 home, 14 away):
http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/en...er_involve=2101;template=results;type=batting

The filter shows matches involving Warne and McGrath, but not necessarily against them.

Thanks Jo_Don. I did not mean necessarily vs them, i was just curious to see how much these guys averaged WHEN facing the Australian team which included Mcgrath and Warne.

Its interesting how much people underrate Kallis due to his performance vs Australia but he actually outperformed Dravid here

Tendulkar's high average in that list is mainly due to his success in matches involving Warne.

Lara faced both of them together more often and was extremely consistent.

He did very well against them in Australia, but suffered in SA. Then again, most batsmen tend to suffer in SA :)

Nope the stats are for matches in which both Warne and McGrath played, so Sachin did well against both :)

I dont think so, cricinfo counts those matches as well when he faced Warne in a McGrath-less attack.

For example, in 1992 and 1998.

And also McGrath in a Warne-less attack (1996).

He faced them both in three series and his average comes to around 41. Lara's would be around 46-47 i'm guessing.

Dravid was the best against quality bowling attacks and much better than overrated Tendulkar.

Sachin averages 42 when both of them are playing. He averages 46 in Australia and 39 in India. You got your condition as McGrath or Warne.

Sachin Played only 7 tests where both Warne and Mcgrath played.

He didn't perform as well as Tendulkar against Australia and SA though, the two best attacks of his time...

What if any of the four faced both Warne and McGrath well and got out to Gillespie or Lee? Does that mean these stats don't present a true picture?

Absolutely correct.

Tendulkar had a hard time reading Ajmal's doosra, yet he scored two fifties in the two ODI's he faced him. His average would be 65+ in those two ODI's. According to raw stats, people would be saying he dominated Ajmal but we all know that is not the case.

This is the problem with weighing a player solely on the basis of numbers.

Yes. Stats with X player in the opposition is completely bunk. Even if the player gets out to someone else or is run out, it is credited to X bowler. Completely stupid and meaningless stats

Hence the footnote in my post. It's for matches involving them, not necessarily against them. I can't find a filter against specific players...

Dravid failed against the two best bowling attacks of his time.

Well a fair comparison would be performances in Australia. Certain conditions are tougher than others. Who averages more there? I think Tendulkar heads the list

May not be the top guy but Lara had a good success against the pair of Warne & McGrath. He was ordinary against other pairs like 2 Ws or Donald + Pollock. I don't think he ever scored a century against these guys. He never had to play Ambrose + Walsh so nothing can be said about it.

You want a Dravid vs Sachin discussion? Have it in a separate thread.

So lets see your drivel on RD,SRT vs McGrath and Warne in this thread.

You Ran away from this post in the other thread claiming that it didnt belong there.

Lets settle this nonsense before we talk about the rest ...

From your past posts it was apparent that you placed more importance on away performances. Are you back tracking on that ? If so which is a better record according to you from these stats:

SRT vs McGrath IN AUS : Avg 46 1x100s 2x50s - 278 Runs
SRT vs McGrath IN IND : Avg 32 1x100s 3x50s - 384 Runs
SRT vs McGrath Overall : Avg 36 2x100s 5x50s - 662 Runs

RD vs McGrath IN AUS : Avg 14.5 0x100s 0x50s - 116 Runs
RD vs McGrath IN IND : Avg 41 1x100s 2x50s - 545 Runs
RD vs McGrath Overall : Avg 31 1x100s 2x50s - 661 Runs

Pick one and explain.

Let see your Blatant Brazen Bakwas and Bullsh!t one more time ... :))

Actually SRT's avg vs Mcgrath & Warne together is a bit skewed..

99 series in Aus vs Mcgrath & Warne: SRT finished with 47 avg & was the man of the series.

2001 series in India vs Mcgrath & Warne: SRT finished the series with an avg of 50.

2005 series in India vs Mcgrath & Warne (AKA the tennis elbow series): SRT finished the series with an avg of 17, he did not play the full series as he was not fit due to the tennis elbow. This also followed a small set of a downward trend for him for a few years as his elbow just was not right...

Rahul Dravid however, was fully fit and he was a nobody vs Mcgrath & Warne through out his career barring one series...

yup and then there was the wrong decision by Harper (acknowledged by Harper himself). Tendulkar had no intentions of playing that 2004 Series but was begged to come play after Ganguly decided to protest and walk off midway into the series. That 50 in Mumbai 3rd innings is one of my fav SRT knock on an absolute brute of a pitch.

It was sad to see that 2005 Australia series in India, SRT looked absolutely terrible. I couldn't believe my eyes what I was seeing considering what I was used to watching with him. That tennis elbow took a huge toll on him, he should have never played that series..
