Sachin Tendulkar's son Arjun makes his IPL Debut in 2023

I dont get how can you be bowling at 126-128 kph with all the world’s best coaching and facilities at your disposal since you were born. I really dont get it. An average street cricketer in Pakistan bowls at that pace.

Azam Khan might be able to bowl faster. Would be an intriguing comparison.

Seems to me he is not a natural left arm bowler.

So you are saying that the best street cricketers in Pakistan bowl at 105 kph.

You clearly have no idea.

Maybe we have a different definition of street cricketer.

'Fast bowlers' in amateur games would typically only hit around 65mph. 80mph would mean you're a freak of nature or you've had proper training.

International cricket really is a whole different kettle of fish. 80mph might be a trundle at that level but it would blow everyone away on the street.

Duan Jansen was bowling even slower than Arjun today. He had good performances in SMAT last year and has been with MI for two years but just got to play a match because MI's bowling options are terrible. Arjun couldn't even get into Mumbai's Ranji team and had to switch to Goa. This isn't a case of nepotism.

It is important to understand the difference between tape ball/tennis ball and cricket ball.

The balls used in streets cricket and significant quicker through the air because of less drag.

Genuine fast bowlers who bowl 90 mph+ with the cricket ball would be bowling well over 100 mph with the tape/tennis ball.

Anyone who can bowl at 70 mph with the cricket will definitely be bowling 80 mph+ with the tape/tennis ball.

You cannot compare speeds of two totally different objectives without controlling other variables.

Arjun is slow for international cricket, but he would be rapid with the tape/tennis ball.

If Arjun can bowl 100mph, how fast do you think rauf was in tape ball. What about that Karnal Zahid guy who can clock 140 regularly. These guys must be 170mph with the tape ball then.

You talking about Gully mohalla cricket or professional street cricket. I think Karnal Zahid type professional tape bowlers are really quick. Some even hit over 140 when they transition to hard ball

I never said Arjun can bowl 100 mph with the tape ball. I said that fast bowlers who are clocking 90 mph+ with the cricket ball will be clocking 100 mph+ easily with the tape ball.

Arjun is not in that express fast bowlers category. He is medium fast.

Its one of the best case of nepotism, Someone of similar talent level would be limited gully cricket in subcontinent and maximum premier (that is also doubtful) club cricket level in western countries. With all the chances he has been given the end product is hugely disappointing.

I have faced many fast bowlers bowling at 80mph.. when in good form and fitness its not really that quick, if you survive the first few balls you will get used to it.

Having played Tape ball cricket in multiple cities in Pakistan, No offence but Bowler here are fast.Even in village areas they bowl fast yorkers and slower balls.

Nothing player. I am sure of that.
Was bowling to England's women's team in nets .
Imagine shaheen bowling to England's women team, all of them will leave cricket asap.

When I was about 15 I used to bowl fast to England women test captain Heater Knight and I was asked by the coach many times to slow down as she was clearly not comfortable.

For men standard I was so slow that I was asked to consider spin bowling which I eventually did to be able to play higher standard. Obviously she was my age too so slightly older and more experienced women cricket might be able to handle 65-70kphs in nets.

Any international class men fast bowler would be too quick for women cricketer at around age 16 specially in nets.

Like Sachin in 1989 he looks like a kid, baby-faced. Who knows in the next few years he might become as good or even better than Shaheen and Starc. I have a feeling he is a good learner. He could easily have concentrated on his batting, after all his dad is a legend and can coach him day and night. But he choose a different path which is fast bowling that shows he has something in him.

He has already shown he is mid 125kph bowler. Throughout we have never seen in history any bowler going for 125kph to 145+

It's actually a pretty sad situation for the kids of superstars who are so much in the public eye. Even if you became something that society deems as a successful profession such as a doctor or an accountant, you will never be able to provide for yourself the lifestyle that your father provided to you as a child through his success, so the academic route will never appeal to kids like these.

The only options remaining are to use your father's connections and goodwill to follow in his footsteps eventhough you clearly don't have the talent and forge a mediocre career in that field, or just give up on doing anything or live life spending your father's money.

Dude you have no idea whatsoever. Tape ball is significantly quicker through the air. Professional tape ball bowlers actually are quicker through the air than most too international fast bowlers let alone arjun tandulkar. Mainly due to the different dynamics. Haris Rauf is manageable with a hardball but with a tape ball you need super human reflexes to defend 12 deliveries.
Try facing tape ball pros like Rauf and Zahid. Zaheer and compare that air speed to most international bowlers. Tape ball is much faster through the air.

Ive seen anwar ali getting cleaned up 3 times in 6 deliveries from Zaheer kalia with a tape ball. Such was the speed through the air. Anwar can play 90 mph with the hard ball as an international cricketer. The tape ball travels way quicker.

Doesn't look like a natural athlete to me.

And that run up in slow mo at 0:20 looked pretty weird - like REALLY weird.

I wonder if he could make it to IPL without being the son of Sachin Tendulkar?

Well, wish him all the best and good luck.

Run up is a bit weird but that follow-through is even weirder. Not bending his back at all. I wonder what the problem might be. An energetic follow through is surely fast bowling 101. His speed can improve considerably if he improves his follow through.

With all the money, resources and world class coaching at his feet since day one, this guy is as mediocre as one can get.

1-18 from 2.5 overs. Well done.

His runup does not look natural. If his father was not Tendulkar this boy would never play anything more than school cricket.

He is a bowling A/R. So, he must be having some ability with bat as well. We will see more of that with time.

He doesn't belong to fast bowler category. He is medium fast category, will hit 130s soon. Let's see how his development goes.

One of these days he will go for 36 runs in an over. Just a matter of time.

He scored a hundred in his first Ranji game and picked up ten wickets at an average of 13 and an economy of 5.6 in SMAT last year. How in the world is he only good for school-level cricket?

Joke of a player, only playing cause daddy is idolized.

Terrible bowling run up, and the pace..... Sohail Tanveer is faster than this kid

He has zero natural talent, all the talent in the Tendulkar gene pool went his dad’s way. It is sad because with all the facilities and opportunities that he has had at his disposal, he could have been a superstar with even moderate ability.

However, he is a really nice kid. Very grounded and humble. He does not carry a fraction of attitude and entitlement. I hope he succeeds, I really do, but unfortunately I don’t see him playing for India.

We have not seen him bat yet. If it is no good, then his IPL career will be pretty short one. Will be a drinks boy at best.
I heard that his batting is better than his bowling. So the verdict is still to be given.

If he can do well for Mumbai in the IPL consistently, that is already a win for him.

Arjun has the ugliest bowling action I have seen for a left arm pacer. The way he sprints and delivers is extremely unpleasing to the eye.

If any Pakistan youngster was being hyped like this because of their connection to an illustrious relative, people would have been up and arms about it. Ask Imam or even Misbah's son or Usman Qadir

Hero worship alive and kicking in India it seems.

But where is being hyped up ? Talking about him is not the same as hyping him up.

I haven't seen anyone impressed with this kid's skills. It's likely people will forget about him after these initial few weeks.

Mumbai Indians will take on Punjab Kings in Saturday's evening clash in IPL 2023 at the Wankhede Stadium. In their previous outing, MI edged out SunRisers Hyderabad on the road, with Arjun Tendulkar, son of batting great Sachin Tendulkar, defending 20 runs in the last over. On the penultimate ball of the match, Arjun dismissed SRH's Bhuvneshwar Kumar to pick up his maiden IPL wicket, a feat which his father failed to achieve during his time in the cash-rich league.

Speaking ahead of MI's game against PBKS, former India head coach Ravi Shastri praised Arjun for showing "clarity of thought" while bowling the last over against SRH.

"There was a clarity of thought in the way Arjun executed those yorkers in the final over. He worked brilliantly on the change of pace and he now has achieved something which his father couldn't. Sachin never had an IPL wicket, and Arjun has surpassed him," Shastri said on Star Sports' 'Cricket Live' show.

He should choose some other profession. He doesn't look like a cricketer at all. He will be trolled pretty badly by Kohli fans who hate Sachin from the bottom of their heart and will leave no opportunity to make fun of him. :inti

Pathetic case of nepotism.

Guy is barely Mumbai club level. Even Ranji and List A seems too much for him.

Mumbai Indians youngster Arjun Tendulkar picked up his first wicket in front of the home crowd against Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 at Wankhede Stadium on Saturday, however, he also ended up featuring in an unwanted record.

Arjun conceded 31 runs in the 16th over and with that over he bowled the second most expensive over by an MI bowler in the IPL. Daniel Sams holds the first position as he conceded 35 runs against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in 2022.

For the third position, there is a tie between three players as Pawan Suyal against Royal Challengers Bangalore (2014), Alzarri Joseph against Rajasthan Royals (2019) and Mitchell McClenaghan vs PBKS (2017) had conceded 28 runs each.

Arjun's over turned out to be crucial in Saturday's match as it shifted the momentum in favour of Punjab Kings.

Nepotism seems so blatant in this regard.

BCCI should be asking questions off IPL management.

Forget BCCI , even common public isn't asking questions on SM. Everyone (well, most of them) wants him to succeed.
Such is adulation for Sachin.

Rough road ahead for the poor chap. I kind of feel sorry for him.

He is an average bowler at this stage in his career. The problem is though that even if he improves, the online bullies will still be on his case.

Such is life these days.

When every other Indian player gets raked, why should it be any different for Arjun?

It should not be any different for Arjun, but being Sachin’s son is actually a disadvantage.

You have guys like Imam who have done pretty well in ODIs and yet he is still called a parchi

This lad is completely awful. If he wasn’t Sachin’s son, he would not be anywhere near an IPL contract.

This lad is completely awful. If he wasn’t Sachin’s son, he would not be anywhere near an IPL contract.

He has some talent. We have to wait and see how he bats. Till now he did not get an opportunity to bat.

Regarding his bowling, he needs to up his pace. 130-135kmph must be his target. Right now he is bowling too slow.

I can double dog guarantee that Ramesh bhai instructed his son that the only chance he has to play for India, let alone Mumbai Indians, was to be a lefty bowler.

Well, what we are witnessing is a natural right hander, bowling unnaturally using his left arm.

It brings a totally new meaning to forcing one through.

And no, Arjun is not ambidextrous.

Brett Lee on Arjun:

"When he was given the responsibility of bowling at the death the other evening, when he closed out the game and won the match for the Mumbai Indians, whichever way it went, I knew it would have been a great experience. What I mean is that he has been thrown into the deep end and that has been great for him. So he is learning as he goes. And like in the other evening when he got hit for a few runs, that is fine. It happens in T20 cricket and I keep reiterating to bowlers that in this format there will be games when bowlers go the journey. It has happened to me so many times. So you have to take the emotion out of it,"

"I think he can do all facets," he said when asked which is a more suitable bowling phase for Arjun in the MI set-up. "The thing with Arjun Tendulkar is I have been super impressed. I feel he has been in wonderful fine form for the Mumbai Indians. His new-ball bowling is outstanding, he is swinging the ball, he is getting the most swing out of the Mumbai Indians. He is well-suited for the middle overs and with experience he will enjoy bowling at the death overs. I am all praise for him."

"People criticise almost everything. If you look at Sandeep Sharma, he has been bowling at 120 kph. Arjun is at least bowling way faster than that. He is only 23 years of age and he has got his whole career ahead of him. My advice will be don't listen to critics. Like his dad had to go through like he misses out and gets a low score...you got to back yourself. He has got some wonderful skills. He can bowl at 140 kph so as soon as he gets comfortable bowling in the team environment, in front of the big lights and big crowd, his pace will increase. I see no issue with his pace. I know how fast he can bowl. He has got all the talent and all the right attributes. So my advice would be tokeep doing what you have been doing and don't listen to those people who are trying to have a go at him because remember most people who will criticise on social media have never bowled a ball in their life. They are keyboard warriors"

So young? He is 23 and doesn't fall in the 'so young' category. Look at Amir, Shaheen and even Irfan Pathan. What were they doing when they were 'so young'. He is receiving special attention only because he is Sachin's son. :inti

2 decent overs today for just 9 runs.

Surprising he didn't get at least another over?

The hate for the kid. He is not a world beater, but if Unadkat can play in IPL and for India, Arjun can at least hope to play in IPL.

Once a bowler is set in his ways, its incredibly difficult to change the fundamentals of his bowling. He needs to make the best of what he has.

Is he any good? Must be hard to have dad like Sachin when it comes to expectations.

He came back with a pretty good two overs.

Hope he improves and gets better and better. May be not a super star of an Athlete but seems like a good kid.

I wish him success.

He is not that good but lets be real if he wasn't Tendulkar's son he wouldn't be getting criticised so much either.

His action is clunky but serviceable and he bowls ok.

Best of luck to the young lad, it must be tough having so much scrutiny at such a young age.

If he can develop his short form batting he can be a handy cricketer at domestic level.

He is also unlucky that BCCI doesn't allow Indians to play overseas because the kid could have made a killing playing leagues all over the world with that surname.

Has to be the most over hyped cricketer ever. What a joke the kid turned out to be

the criticism isn't the issue. It was the hype, that oh look tendulkars son is coming. THere are articles talking about him. Than he also got into IPL before many deserving kids that I am sure exist in India.

Obviously, with all that he was going to be judged with high standards that if he is being fast tracked that needs to be playing at that level. But turns out he is a useless cricketer.

Also, no its not tough. Im tired of this soo called pity he gets. How is it tough? He got to train with the best cricketers and had access to international facilities, he got to become a PROFESSIONAL CRICKETER only because of his blood line. It doesnt matter how he performs, now he has become a professional cricketer and will keep on earning money as a professional cricketer at domestic level.

There shouldnt be pity for him. THere are many cricketers in subcontinent who have the talent but will not become professional cricketers. They will continue doing their day to day jobs. Playing for national team is something else, but even becoming a professional cricketer is a very big deal

Being the offspring of a cricket legend is hard but Sachin Tendulkar’s son Arjun is quietly starting to make his mark — albeit with the ball not the bat.

Last month the 23-year-old left-arm fast bowler played for the first time in an IPL match — for his dad’s old outfit Mumbai Indians — and returned solid if not spectacular figures of 0-17.

For context, by the time his dad was the same age he was captain of India, had 10 Test centuries — his first aged only 17 — and was on his way to achieving god-like status at home.

Sachin went on to become the top-scoring Test batsman of all time and when he retired in 2013 it was a national tragedy.

Indian media and fans are salivating at the idea of another Tendulkar wearing the Indian colours.

However, Arjun still has a long way to go to prove that he has the ability to play regularly in the IPL, never mind for his country.

And with a father like his, the weight of expectation is huge.

“Just being a Tendulkar will turn the spotlight on you,” veteran cricket journalist Ayaz Memon told AFP.

“Along with that comes a whole world of pressure, you can’t escape. So that’s what young Arjun has lived through all his life. The expectations multiply and the scrutiny will get harsher and harsher.”

Arjun was signed by Mumbai Indians in 2021 but the recent home match against Kolkata in front of a packed, ecstatic crowd was the first time he had played.

When captain Rohit Sharma told him to bowl it was such a big moment that Sachin was in tears, according to former West Indies cricketer and commentator Ian Bishop.

It was in the next game that Arjun made his mark.

He took his debut wicket — a feat even his father couldn’t achieve during his IPL career — and defended 20 runs in the final over. That spoke of his nerve as much as his ability.

A nervous Sachin watched his son’s last-over heroics and later tweeted: “And finally a Tendulkar has an IPL wicket!”

The euphoria was soon forgotten, however, when in Mumbai’s next match he was smashed for 31 runs in an over, with social media full of accusations of nepotism.

Arjun played one more match and took one more wicket before being benched.

Rohit admitted the decision was tough but said it was more about selecting a side to suit the conditions, rather than Arjun’s performance.

So how good is he? Standing at over six feet (1.83 metres) tall, the youngster made his T20 debut for a domestic team in Mumbai in 2021, but failed to do enough to nail down a place in the team.

He shifted to Goa in the search for regular action and played seven first-class matches for them.

Arjun can swing the ball off the pitch but lacks speed, with his fastest deliveries coming at just about 130 kph (80 mph). The quickest bowlers are in the 145-160 kph range.

Mumbai bowling coach Shane Bond said that “we will work on increasing his pace”.

Arjun spoke recently about his relationship with his famous father, saying that they “talk a lot about cricket”.

“We talk tactics and plans,” he said. “I just focused on my release and the lengths I want to bowl. If it swings, it is a bonus. If it doesn’t, so be it.”
