Sharjeel failed 3 innings but Khushdil and Iftikhar have been failing for God know’s how long. Fakhar failing at 3 for God know’s how long
The desperation to keep out Pakistan’s most destructive T20 opener is astounding!
The same people cry and call you a traitor to Pakistan when you do not show support for Babar and Rizwan!
Rana, I have less of an issue compared to other posters about Sharjeel being a former fixer. The man did His time, and served his punishment by missing out on the prime of his athletic career.
My issue with him is this. This is absolutely not 2016 Sharjeel. If it was, this would be a very short thread, because that guy walks into the team. That guy used to murder length bowling and in his few games began to real lean into his cover shots, something you don’t associate with Sharjeel. That was then.
2022 Sharjeel unfortunately is just not the same guy. He will still Murder length bowling, but he really struggles to rotate strike. If you use to bowl into his legs early he struggled, even in 2016, but because of a better level of fitness under Mickey Arthur, he would be able to take a single. Given his current fitness, he is unable to take that quick single. Thereby he gets stuck on the crease and then has Rizwan like s/r despite hitting more boundaries than Rizzy.
2016 Sharjeel was the type of bat who you’d want to have play 10 overs. The current version would struggle, because against better teams, when the field is spread out, you need batsmen to supplement boundaries by running the 1s into 2s and the 0s into 1s. This is not just to keep the scoreboard ticking, but also to allow your batting partner to face enough balls to get their timing.
Can you, hand on heart say that 2022 Sharjeel has the required fitness levels to do type of intense running?
Lastly, it’s the fielding element. There are threads upon threads here dedicated to Pakistan’s comedy fielding. Because of our poor throwing, we regularly concede too many singles and doubles as is.
On a more serious note, we have seen the direct effect of dropped catches in this series alone (Shan dropped Hales and Khushdil dropped Moeen when both were set and they did some heavy damage after that). A dropped catch from Hasan Ali arguably cost us a place in the final of the T20 WC.
Does adding a Sharjeel to the field not increase the chances of more sluggish fielding and dropped catches?
Thus, in closing, I believe that whilst Sharjeel would add something to a Pakistan team, the cons way outweigh the pros.
This is why I’d be happy to split the Babar/Rizzy opening pair by having another opener in, but I’m not confident Sharjeel increases your team’s performance.
