Best death bowler in the world currently. He was outstanding in the Pakistan series as well.
 
After a mixed bag of results so far in the T20 World Cup, Kevin Pietersen believes England could be peaking at the right time.

After an opening win against Afghanistan, England stumbled when they suffered a shock upset loss against Ireland and then when their next game with Australia was rained off, the World Cup knockout stages looked almost out of reach.

Such is the talent in this current England side, however, that they rallied and recorded back to back wins over New Zealand and Sri Lanka to set up a semi-final matchup with India.

“Tournament cricket is about peaking at the right time,” former T20 World Cup winner Pietersen told Betway. “It’s about winning the right games, getting to the knockouts, and then winning the final.

“Let’s not worry about what’s happened in the group stage. Let’s celebrate the fact that England are now in the semi-finals with the potential to make the final and win another World Cup. That’s the focus and the drive.

“The pressure was on against Sri Lanka, they delivered, and now it’s time to go and win the semi-final.”

Ahead of the knockout stages, Pietersen has singled out Sam Curran as a potentially key player due to his left arm seam bowling that could provide something different from the rest of the attack.

“I love left-arm seam,” Pietersen said. “I love that different angle of attack when it comes to the shortest form of the game.

“We all grow up against right-arm seamers, and when we’re laying the foundations for our careers, we get all of our fundamentals against right-arm bowling. So, the little change of angle from a left-arm seamer is something that I love.

“When we won the T20 World Cup in 2010, Ryan Sidebottom was instrumental for us. That left-arm seam and swing, that different angle and shape, is so important, because it takes a couple of balls for a batter to line up.

“I’m a great advocate of having one, if not two of those guys in your T20 side, and Sam Curran is fulfilling that role beautifully for England.”

With that being said, the beauty of a World Cup is it that no matter how many stars a team has, anything can happen.

“The biggest takeaway from this T20 World Cup is that it doesn’t matter who is on your team sheet, or what the badge is on your team sheet,” Pietersen continued.

“On any given day, in the shortest form of the game, one or two players have a really good game and anyone can beat you.

“Australia have unfortunately come unstuck in what is probably the most competitive T20 tournament so far.

“Not only that, but South Africa lost to the Netherlands, Ireland beat England, Scotland beat the West Indies. There have been quite a few upsets.

“Just because you’ve got some of the best players in the world and you’re playing against a smaller team, it’s no longer a foregone conclusion.

“That’s what is making T20 cricket so watchable and so entertaining, but also so serious. It’s serious business now.”

What an emergence for Sam. Didn’t know he had it in him. He’s been one of the bowlers of the tournament and has fully justified his selection.

Yes exactly, not the most talented cricketer but he has put in a great deal of hard work and shown a willingness to keep improving.

Always looked at him as a buffet bowler. He has sure turned it around in this world T20 adding more variations to his bowling. Also surfaces helped his style.

Looked improved bowler in this whole tournament. Except India game he was brilliant at the death overs throughout World Cup.

I am delighted. I think he can be a test all-rounder when we have to replace Stokes. Needs to get his batting up though.
 
It was humiliating watching someone of Curran calibre bowl his four overs for 12 runs.

Pak managed to survive against SA and NZ but struggled against the gentle pace of Curran.
 
England's Sam Curran has become the most expensive auction buy in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL) after being bought by Punjab Kings for £1.85m.

Six franchises made a bid for the 24-year-old all-rounder before Punjab were eventually successful.

Yorkshire's Harry Brook has been sold to Sunrisers Hyderabad for £1.35m.

The 23-year-old was the leading run-scorer for England in their recent 3-0 Test series win in Pakistan.

Curran was named player of the tournament at this year's Twenty20 World Cup after helping England to become double white-ball world champions.

He took 13 wickets at an average of 11.38 in last month's event in Australia and has improved his batting to become a genuine all-rounder.

The previous most expensive IPL player was South Africa all-rounder Chris Morris, who was signed by Rajasthan Royals for £1.6m in April 2021.

CSK already showed their intention they were going to go after him which made his auction hotter already. Since CSK was after him everyone was after him. Most teams need a all rounder. So everyone went after him
 
There should be an upper limit on how much you can pay for a certain player.
 
When there are not many big players up for auction and you want a certain specialization of player, this is exactly what happens.

PBKS needed an A/R because the only player they had was Rishi Dhawan. So, they invested all the money on Sam Curran so that they can play him at 7. Rabada, Arshdeep and Curran looks a good bowling attack now but not sure about their batting.

You have to make the noise at the right time. First Sam Curran who won MOS in world T20 then Harry Brook. If Harry Brook played some tuk tuk test cricket he probably would not have for this much. England has been bazballing everywhere. It definitely played a huge role in selection of this many English players in one auction that too mini auction.
 
Curran gave India so much pleasure their schadenfreude manifested in itself today

He has been extremely lucky for such a average cricketer. He wouldn’t make many teams as a batsmen or bowler yet he’s viewed like the next best thing.

Pakistan let some medium pace bowler control them.
 
Sam Curran is good but not as good as the money he is getting & besides, past IPL performances should be a bigger indicator.

Nonetheless, even if he goes unsold in the next auction he won’t care after the scam that he has pulled off this time.
 
CSK, true to their legacy picking an over the hill 35 year old player who would not have been picked by even his family for a T20 team ever. Maybe they saw him score a 200 in Ranji.

His role made him a hotter commodity. Not his numbers. Few teams are lacking all rounders. few teams have lost their long term players. Example Pollard, Bravo. That is why all rounders were hot properties this time.

England fast bowler Sam Curran has been fined 15 per cent of his match fee for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the second ODI against South Africa in Bloemfontein on Sunday 29 January.

Curran was found to have breached Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to using any language, action or gesture towards a batter upon their dismissal which has the potential to provoke an aggressive reaction from the dismissed batter.

In addition to this, one demerit point has been added to Curran’s disciplinary record, for whom it was the first offence in a 24-month period.

The incident occurred in the 28th over of South Africa’s innings when, after dismissing Temba Bavuma, Curran excessively celebrated towards and in close proximity to the dismissed batter, being an action which had the potential to provoke an aggressive reaction from Bavuma.

Curran admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by Jeff Crowe of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, so there was no need for a formal hearing.

On-field umpires Marais Erasmus and Adrian Holdstock, third umpire Bongani Jele and fourth umpire Allahudien Palekar levelled the charge.

Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50 per cent of a player’s match fee, and one or two demerit points.

Not sure screaming at a person face who just made a hundred is the way to go.

For me he’s the most overrated player in the side. Such better gun players in the squad.

The Punjab Kings faced a 24-run defeat to Royal Challengers Bangalore in their 2023 Indian Premier League match on Thursday afternoon. After being invited to bat by PBKS' stand-in skipper Sam Curran, the RCB posted a competitive total of 174/4 in 20 overs; their openers Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis posted a 137-run stand for the opening wicket. In reply, the Kings were bowled out on 150 with ten deliveries to spare.

The Kings endured a top and middle-order collapse, with the side being reduced to 43/4 inside the powerplay; the poor batting show forced bowling all-rounder Curran to bat early in the innings. Prabhsimran Singh, the other batter, scored a majority of the runs in a partnership with Curran that seemed to bring some stability to the PBKS' run-chase; however, the side's stand-in skipper gave his wicket away rather cheaply in the 10th over.

A bit of lazy running cost Curran his wicket and the bowling all-rounder was clearly not happy with himself as he walked back towards the dressing room. And former India opener Virender Sehwag, who has worked with Punjab Kings – both as player and coach in the past – came down hardly at Curran for his lazy running-between-the-wickets.

“He's an international player. But you can't buy experience with 18 crore. It only comes when you play, when your hair turn white as you play under the hot sun,” Sehwag told Cricbuzz.

“We think just because he was bought for 18 crore, he will win you matches. But he doesn't have that experience yet. It was poor running, there was no need for that. You're captain, you should've stayed, tried to take it to the final overs. But again, the lack of experience cost him,” Sehwag further said.

Curran led the Punjab Kings in the absence of Shikhar Dhawan, who is currently injured. Dhawan had missed the side's last two games – the other being against Lucknow Super Giants – but Curran stated at the toss against RCB that the star opener is closer to regaining full fitness.

Sam Curran might have been bogged down by the pressure of his price tag in this IPL, but Punjab Kings bowling coach Charl Langeveldt backed the Englishman, terming him a "winner". Andre Russell roared back to form by smashing Curran for three sixes off four balls to turn the match in favour of KKR who sealed a thrilling five-wicket win to keep their playoff hopes alive in the IPL here on Monday. "He's a winner. You want to back him. He's our senior bowler as well, you can have days like this," the South African said at the post-match media interaction.

Curran, who became the most expensive player of the IPL after PBKS roped him for Rs 18.5 crore, leaked 20 runs in the penultimate over to finish with figures of 3-0-44-0.

Curran has just seven wickets from 11 matches and his economy is 10-plus.

"He's one of those players who can come back and win us a game. It's just about going back to the drawing board, keep it as simple as possible." Hailing Russell's knock, Langeveldt said: "He's always a massive player, a game changer. We wanted to keep him quiet and tried to bowl outside his hitting zone." Kagiso Rabada has played just five matches this season for PBKS as they preferred Nathan Ellis over the South African, and Langeveldt said it's a no-brainer.

"Ellis has been bowling well. He's been our go-to guy, bowls well inside the powerplay and handles pressure.

"It was a simple decision. I didn't even think about that and said 'okay, we need to go with Ellis', and he produced again tonight," he said.

A great cricketer during his playing days, Virender Sehwag has turned into a pundit who doesn't know how to mince words. Not for the first time this season, Sehwag launched a scathing attack at Punjab Kings all-rounder Sam Curran, who is the most-expensive player in the history of the Indian Premier League. After PBKs' Prabhsimran Singh guided the team to a win over Delhi Capitals with his maiden ton in the competition, Sehwag lauded the batter but somehow brought Sam Curran into the conversation.

Prabhsimran was sole positive for Punjab in the match against Delhi, scoring 103 off 65 balls while Curran was the second-highest run-getter with a knock of 20 off 24 balls. Reviewing what happened on the field, Sehwag was quick to fire shots at Curran while hailing Prabhsimran

"Punjab Kings have benefitted from the chances that they've given to Prabhsimran. Now, he has to be consistent. And I think the PBKS will benefit a lot from such a player. When he came for the first time, he was bought for a lot of money (INR 4.8 crore). This time around, he fetched quite less (INR 60 lakh). But he proved his talent today.

"He showed that he can hit those centuries. Again, he was bought for INR 60 lakh, and if a player fetching that much scores hundreds and wins you a couple of games, there can be nothing better than that. You bought Sam Curran for Rs 18.5 crores, what has he done?" Sehwag said in a chat on Cricbuzz.
