Talk about being thrown in the deep end. Hardly any practice on this tour, hardly any cricket for a while and thrown into the lions den against Anderson, Broad, Woakes and co.

The Pakistani way.......

Saj bhai completely agree with you. But if he comes out strong today, he would definitely leave a bigger mark.

I feel for Sami Aslam because players like Hapless Hafeez gets to bat on the UAE pitches to up their average while he will be dropped if he fails here

So far so good. Needs to keep scoring not go into a shell if he is to succeed today.

I can already tell he looks afraid to come forward or go back. Seems very ensure of his movements atm.

He is a bundle of nerves at the moment, but who wouldn't be in his situation.

Yes, doesn't appear to be quick on his feet, s bit like Fawad Alam. The wide stance doesn't help either.

Other then one or two odd shots of Broad, he looks pretty confident to me. Playing much better then "experienced" Azhar Ali

Already looking better than Shaan and Hafeez honestly. Want him to score at least 50+

This is international cricket. The guy has done enough A tours and U-19 tours. Heck has even played test cricket and one day for his country before. Are we expecting Anderson and Broad to feed him freebies? I don't see it as thrown in the deep end.

It's a good opportunity for him to make a mark. At least much better than free wicket of Shan Masood.

Sami Aslam is mentally strong. Has already scored hundreds vs. England in England against their best U19 team.

Yes, this treatment is very unfair, and if he fails, PCB should still back him and give consistent chances on easier tours too.

Fans will take the knives out and attack, but fans are fans.

So far, he has done GREAT. Looking quite assured, played quite a few balls and hanging in there.

This guy has some experience has played many matches on the international level probably our best U-19 batsman ever played for Pakistan.

Yes I think he has a very bright future ahead of him, hey have done is because they really didn't had any option at all ! And hopefully he makes the best of out of this situation.

I think the real test would be against Woakes, when the ball would start moving. If he is able to negotiate him, I think he has a real chance at some good score today.

Sterling ODI material but don't think he should be a Test selection yet, has not put up the numbers. Still, nothing wrong with seeing what he's made off as long as he gets a fair run. He's performed in big U19 occasions, and this is the next step, simple as that.

I guess this sort of tactic can work one of two ways. Either the youngster sinks and is 'damaged' goods or he swims and becomes a great find.

Has done well so far, just hope he doesnt fall to a poor shot as this return to test cricket could be a short one knowing or captain and selectors when it comes to openers.

Last time I saw him play in Bangladesh he was pretty poor against spin, so let's so how he does against Moeen/Root.

Well so far, he has done a respectable job of doing what Hafeez/Masood didn't-the new ball has been seen off and they've put on a 50 partnership. I don' t know how his fitness is, but they will need to see it now into a bigger score.

The one thing that has gone in his favor is that the pitch has eased out quite a bit.

Saw him have a net session at sussex 3 weeks ago and told you Saj he was ready.

I even said he looked technically the most correct batsman in the team, someone who likes to get behind the ball.

Sami Aslam and Babar Azam really show why the NCA and U19 cricket is working and how the coaching done there can produce you a technically correct international batsman if the player has ambitions.

Pleased by his judgement outside off. Exploited the vacant gully area well early on too. Hope he kicks on and makes a fifty.

Hope he scores a 50+ score.. already batting better than Hafeez and Shan

Shehzadians praying that he gets out soon. Hes looked solid so far along with Azhar.

MashaAllah- nice start. Hope he keeps it going.
Not going to judge him until he has had a proper run- but liking what I see today for obvious reasons.
Had a gully been in he would have been out on 7, and that is why we need to see a run of games before passing judgement.
At least we know from U19 that he can score big once set- so InshaAllah he can start again after lunch and kick on

Doing okay so far but lets not get ahead of ourselves, he got a lot of work to do. Would be a waste if he throws his wicket away after lunch, all that hard work for nothing....has been the story of our batting so far in this series.

So far has shown a lot more grit and composure than any of the other two openers in the series. He might not score big but you can see that he is a better test opener.

Seems to be rotating the strike well at the moment, looks more comfortable than Azhar.

Looks a lot more compact than I last saw him. That front leg isn't coming across as much now. Good to see him improve.

Far too early to make conclusions, but at least he has earned himself the West Indies series in September/October.

Definitely has shown very good temperament in this innings. Encouraging signs.

Highly impressed with this lad... Saj bhai said there is no one better to replace the playing XI from the rest of the squad and he is proven wrong here by the two additions for this match especially this guy Sami Aslam..I myself doesnt want to give sami a chance in fear of his place that if he fails he might well lose his few good years of cricket upcming..

he's played better than when i saw him last time..last time he looked very dodgy outside his off stump..much more compact now, and is taking quick singles, frustrating anderson..

From my initial judgement, this kid has a very good technique and seems to have a very good brain and good judgement. He may not score many runs in the near future, but from a log term perspective, he must be in the team...

He was captain of the u-19 side, seems very mature as a 20 year old.

If the Pakistani management can manage him, in terms of attitude etc... He will come to good... Same goes for players like Baber Azam and Saud etc. The day a Pakistani player crosses over that line (akmal and shehzad) that's when you lose the player forever.

I still believe Shehzad and Umar once had potential to be greats. Fame and lack of maturity killed them totally.

Looks like a player who has limited strokeplay on this type if surface but gutsy and determined.

He's not your flashy type of batsman, who will play shots all around the park, but he looks like a reliable and solid batsman who will not give his wicket away.

Enough of those! need staying power and he's got it.

You cannot say that... He's playing a true test innings, at at time when he's playing for his place and trying to get his team into a great position in this match.

Congratulations to the young man. At a minimum, he has shown excellent temperament.

Where did I say he's not playing a proper Test innings or a poor innings?

I knew he was good but I didn't expect him to do this well today, he needs to go on and make a century though

I'm pleasantly surprised, Sami has proved a lot today. Still though in the future I wouldn't want young players to be thrown in like this

Pleasantly surprised. Didn't think he was anywhere near ready for Test cricket, but happy to see him prove me wrong.

Good old fashioned test batting. Anything outside the off stump is left well alone.

You're assuming his stroke play is limited when In fact you cannot judge that from his innings today.

Read again what I wrote. "who has limited strokeplay on this type of surface but gutsy and determined"

People forget that Aslam was actually given an easy start. He debuted against Bangladesh. Can't coddle him forever, and he clearly has some temperament.

Same here, I thought he was too raw to be thrown in mid-series in England, especially after his struggles last year in Bangladesh.

But this a superbly disciplined knock. Shown the senior pros a thing or two.

Played well but, there was no run there, plus why oh why did he have to run so wide?

Very mature inns and much needed one after hafeez got out early, I liked how he was solid early on and played a few more shots once settled, it's a shame he didn't get a well deserved 100

This was one of the best test opener innings I have seen by Pakistani is last 10 years. 100 here would have been icing on the cake. This guy should be give long run... His temperament and specially technique is excellent!!! - He has all the ingredients of great test opener

In the very first test, he was facing world best new ball seam and swing bowlers at their home. It takes a lot to blunt them out for 60 overs!!!

Feel horrible for him, hundred was there for the taking.

Well played anyway.

What impressed me the most that he has completely changed his stance and much me solid in defence and is more compact then before. These are the sort of guys who we need to invest in at least the work hard to improve.

Fielder standing straightish.

No if you watch it again, he diverted wide, as many Pakistani batsmen have done the same. He started running wide because of the fielder but got wider as he got closer to the strikers-end.

I was afraid for him for getting exposed to early by I was so wrong.. these changes have been brilliant from the management and Misbah.

All the credit to Sami Aslam.. he has well surpassed my expectations and should be a bonafide test match addition for the remaining test match series.. his place in the team should be certain now

Well put. He has outshone all the Pakistani openers that have played in England in recent times since Saeed Anwar.. quite an achievement!!

Believe me, he has most of the shots and he plays them, but in LO matches. And had he reached his hundred today he would have played more freely. A good head on his shoulders as he knows what the requirements of the longest formats are.

I hope he keeps his focus and discipline and continue in the same manner.

It will be a huge find for Pakistan, huge!

Sami has problems against the short ball which Australia will exploit if it is not rectified.

Cook is similar to Misbah, he doesn't really know how to set fields square of the wicket to exploit short ball weaknesses which many Pakistani players have.

Type of player that will do well in NZ and Aus

Also im not too worried about the lack of flashy shots, its his first innings and i think he was very resistant to playing any huge booming shots in these conditions. Azhar and Asad were the same in their first few series, the shots came once they were confident of their place in the team.

He will be fine in Australia, he plays late and wait for ball to come at him rather than going at the ball... This is key in Australia, where there is little lateral movement. He also has a very good sense of length, he left very good deliveries at both line and length, another thing important to play in AUS/NZ.

Short ball was not his problem, he was hit by a ball that did not bounce, which rarely happens in Australia. Bounce is generally true there. He is also young and has good reflexes, he was playing under lot of pressure today. This innings will give him and coaching staff lot of confidence...

I think the most important thing about him is that he is a natural opener much like Cook, not fazed by new ball and can leave all day, run singles on soft touches... Fast bowlers have to work hard to get him out as oppose to Hafeez, Shan and Shezad, those guys are walking wicket even after 10 years of international cricket :face palm:

It just shows the PPers who have been backing Hafeez as test opener do not know a single thing about cricket.

All I hear in Pakistani media is how he is our best player bla bla bla bla. No he is not. He is a hack who has had countless chances and dropped many many times only to come back again because of his connections.

He is a no.6 ODI AR at best and he can't even bowl because he is banned. Should be dropped.

Sami is the type of players we need to invest in. I don't care if he doesn't get runs, its a worthwhile investment rather than an incompetent 35 year old desperately trying to keep the paychecks coming through.

You have no idea about batting or his ability. Don't throw random statements. :))

Short ball and pull is one of his strengths in fact.
