Former India batsman Sanjay Manjrekar and current World No 1 women's doubles tennis player Sania Mirza were involved in a volley of words on Twitter on Wednesday, after the former made a comment that not only earned Mirza's ire but also caught plenty of attention from other members of the micro-blogging website.

The whole incident started when Sania Mirza posted a tweet, celebrating 80 weeks at the top of the WTA rankings.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-cards="hidden" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Today I complete 80 consecutive weeks as the number 1 player in d world👆its been an amazing journey and just inspires me to work harder <a href="https://twitter.com/WTA">@WTA</a> <a href="https://t.co/BsHoeU0YAT">pic.twitter.com/BsHoeU0YAT</a></p>— Sania Mirza (@MirzaSania) <a href="https://twitter.com/MirzaSania/status/788399721136082944">October 18, 2016</a></blockquote>
<script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Many Twitterati congratulated her on the accomplishment.

An amazing run of fine tennis performances deserves all the appreciation in the world, and Manjrekar too congratulated her but then reminded Sania that her No 1 ranking was in the women's doubles category.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">No 1 doubles player you mean. Congrats! <a href="https://t.co/Qrdyigdrro">https://t.co/Qrdyigdrro</a></p>— Sanjay Manjrekar (@sanjaymanjrekar) <a href="https://twitter.com/sanjaymanjrekar/status/788591568659808257">October 19, 2016</a></blockquote>
<script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Considering Sania quit singles tennis in 2013, her career is restricted only to doubles, and there can't conceivably be any other format she could have become World No 1 in. But it's a fact that Manjrekar is still to grasp. Taking potshots at Sania for missing an "important" detail was unwarranted, and the champ replied back in kind.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Since I don't play singles anymore isn't that obvious/common sense?my bad,common sense is not that common after all I guess.. :) <a href="https://t.co/fXhnaQZEM7">https://t.co/fXhnaQZEM7</a></p>— Sania Mirza (@MirzaSania) <a href="https://twitter.com/MirzaSania/status/788610177545203712">October 19, 2016</a></blockquote>
<script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Hey.. But thanks for your wishes though ofcourse <a href="https://t.co/fXhnaQZEM7">https://t.co/fXhnaQZEM7</a></p>— Sania Mirza (@MirzaSania) <a href="https://twitter.com/MirzaSania/status/788610286299320321">October 19, 2016</a></blockquote>
<script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Ideally, this should have been the moment when Manjrekar should have realised the tide had turned a long time ago and apologised. But the charm offensive continued, as he tweeted out the following:

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Well, you missed out an important detail for someone like me who lacks common sense :) <a href="https://t.co/nLgRFONxrn">https://t.co/nLgRFONxrn</a></p>— Sanjay Manjrekar (@sanjaymanjrekar) <a href="https://twitter.com/sanjaymanjrekar/status/788623147625025536">October 19, 2016</a></blockquote>
<script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Not one to back down from a fight, Mirza replied back in kind and pointed the commentator out to an article published by WTA, which talked about her amazing run as one the best doubles player in the world.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Clearly!!! So here you go <a href="https://t.co/vRE2vmk1ka">https://t.co/vRE2vmk1ka</a> .. An article with all the 'important details' .. :) <a href="https://t.co/lZTGBSsUNA">https://t.co/lZTGBSsUNA</a></p>— Sania Mirza (@MirzaSania) <a href="https://twitter.com/MirzaSania/status/788624992808398848">October 19, 2016</a></blockquote>
<script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

The conversation came to close with Manjrekar finally backing down, but still not acknowledging his error in pointing out something as obvious as Mirza's doubles run.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Yes, the article also says No. 1 doubles player in the world. Said what I had to, will leave all balls outside the off stump alone now 😊👋🏽 <a href="https://t.co/LP37fxYE0s">https://t.co/LP37fxYE0s</a></p>— Sanjay Manjrekar (@sanjaymanjrekar) <a href="https://twitter.com/sanjaymanjrekar/status/788629122968879104">October 19, 2016</a></blockquote>

This entire Twitter exchange has only made Sanjay Manjerekar's stock fall in the eyes of cricket as well as tennis fans. Belittling the achievements of a champion and not having a clue about her standing as a player in the doubles circuit, despite it being more than two years since she quit singles events due to injury concerns, speaks volumes about Manjrekar and his ignorance of the matter. It was completely justified for Sania Mirza to return his volley with a forehand smash of her own!

Sania was misleading, she tweeted she was the number one player in the world. To somebody that doesn't follow tennis they would assume she was the number one singles player. Even if she didn;t want to mention doubles tennis she could've tagged her partners account or named her in her tweet cause doubles tennis is a team sport.

It would be as inane as Azhar Ali calling himself the "number one cricketer" in the world without mentioning his team. It just sounds self-centered.

Manjrekar rightly pointed out. Number 1 ranked player in singles>>>>>>>>>>doubles. I don't understand why she didn't mention "doubles".

Manjerakars tone is very impolite.

It was in the lines of.... "ha? How that happened? How you became number one?.... Never mind, it is doubles."

He could have had presented better.

Can't stand that Sanjay Manjerakar. Good on Sania Mirza to put him in his place.

The world of doubles is filled with discards from the elite level which is dominated by Serena and Federer.Sorry Sania but tell it like it is.

That is a terrible analogy. It is more like BCCI tweeing that India is the #1 team in the world, without mentioning tests. It isn't a big deal.

If someone doesn't follow tennis enough to know that Sania is obviously not the #1 singles player in the world, then they probably don't know the difference between singles and doubles either.

She should've mentioned her doubles partner, it's a team sport. She seems to be taking all the credit.

Doubles are whack, no one cares about doubles. Anyway, Manjrekar sounds bitter.

Agree with Sanjay here. It is important to mention "doubles" thereby making it clear that she was a flop singles player hence her retirement from that format. Likes of Venus Williams would humiliate her within an hour. Her partner in the doubles format is also number one as well.

To be fair that is true

The world of doubles is filled with discards and rejects. It's just that the very top players don't play doubles or don't take it seriously

Lmao what. People wouldn't know the difference between singles and doubles if they don't follow tennis. Every dunce who understands a bit of English would know what it means

I would norm demean Sania, it's still a big achievement to be number one ranked tennis player in doubles and especially if you're from South Asia. Plus, I have seen her play, she is not that bad, so, full respect to her! But she isn't the number one player in the world like she mentioned in her tweet, she is not even a contender for that spot. This ranking is shared with Martina Hingis so yes she should have mentioned her like someone pointed out.

Now that I think of it, maybe Martina hasn't been number ranked doubles for 80 weeks?

Exactly. Not only is she keeping a full-time doubles player like Hingis behind, but also there isn't another South Asian in top-300. This certainly deserves a lot of respect.

But I am with Manjrekar here. Sania's tweet indeed was quite misleading.

No its like Rohit Sharma tweeting pride at beign highest run scorer of 2015 while the truth is he was highest scorer in IPL not international tournaments/matches

Sanjay has.a point Sania at least couldve mentioned her partner rather than trying to take all the credit for herself

Manjrekar right to call her out. Sania being deliberately misleading with her tweet, no matter what she says.

Would not have been too difficult to simply add the word doubles to her original tweet, and humbly accept she had made a small honest mistake.

Her getting so upset about it kind of reinforces the notion that she was angry that she was found out, and that the omission was deliberate.

People like her use twitter to increase their profile, etc. Would have been to her benefit to add lots of guillable 'fans/followers' with 'false advertising'.

Sanjay has.a point Sania at least couldve mentioned her partner rather than trying to take all the credit for herself

I think this is actually the reason behind Sania-Hingis split. Always noticed the tension in their interviews when Sania was always full of herself and would keep mentioning her #1 ranking. Must have been very annoying for the legend.

Sania is making a mountain out of mole hill. She was wrong there and is trying hard to justify it now. There is nothing wrong in admitting ones mistake.

ego issues on both sides

Manjrekar thinks he is king of twitter - Sania thinks she owns the rankings.

Manjerakars tone is very impolite.

He could have had presented better.

Precisely, Manjerakar just has a habit of winding up people, i cant figure out if its intentional or what.

Sania made such a big fuss about a petty issue. This further reinforces that she was intentionally trying to mislead people and she got hurt after she was called out. What a clown!

The article headline is weird...

Sania didn't shut up Manju.

The tweet battle saw her getting owned.

Her tweet may have been an honest mistake and she could have said "yeah doubles" and moved on. But she tried to be passive aggressive and apart from die hard Sania fans, Manju haters and uber "how can you disrespect our legend no matter what the context" types....most people can see what's going on.

What if its both ,Sanjay is right on logic did call out Sania and Sania was rude to the petty man who always does similar things.

One can agree with both and still want Sanjay to get ridiculed and Sania called out win-win situation.

Sanjay is a clown. Even I know she was talking about doubles and I have no interest in Indian sports or tennis. Does sanjay qualify each tweet he makes with every single piece of information available?

I hate Sanjay, he can be so annoying but here Sania is in the wrong.

In any sport formats matter, so you can't mislead people by just saying no.1 in the sport. The only one lacking common sense here is Sania.

Not many know about tennis though, so Sania posting a picture of just herself with that kind of tweet would lead anyone to believe that she's a singles no.1

It's just like how when teams get to no.1 in cricket, you don't just say XYZ became the no.1, you mention the format too.

If you don't know who is number one then chances are you don't follow Tennis and therefore shouldn't care

This.

Anybody with a passing knowledge of tennis will know that Sania is a doubles player and not a singles player. Especially that is the least expected of someone who follows Sania on twitter. People might say she should have mentioned doubles in her tweet or should have mentioned her partner, but Sania and doubles are self explanatory and she has changed partners as well. I don't see why she should mention everything in one tweet in her own account. Sanjay being cringeworthy as usual, he tries to rile up each and everyone. Once he tried to rile up Martyn and Hayden on a live show and even I felt very uncomfortable watching that.:afaq

Always love people who rile others up, because they point out the uncomfortable truth. Sania's irritation is evident when her self tribute was set correct by Manjrekar.

Won't mind Sanju getting owned but in this case, hard to feel sorry for Sania. Just made a small correction and did congratulated her. She just pounced on him. Haha.

You are right but that's NOT the point.

If she was "oh so angel", her reaction would have been different to Manju's post.

The moment she replied to Manju in that way, sab doodh ka doodh, paani ka paani hogaya.

Oh come on, everyone knows Sanjay isn't innocent. It's not even something big enough to get corrected, it's self explanatory. But Sanjay wanted to rile up people like he always does. You listen to him during commentary or during tv shows, you'll know what I mean. Sania gave a befitting response imo.

So Sanjay is not innocent in general means everything he says should be responded with a rude passive aggressive reply?

Sanjay's tweet was neither polite nor impolite. It was the kind of tweet where you could project your views and make it what you want it to be.

Rest is there in front of you.

she no longer plays with Hingis. And Hingis is numer two on the list.So dont know why she should have mentioned Hingis.

Difference in being no 1 in singles and no 1 in doubles is night and day. Majraker is a nice and balanced person. The world is bexoming a crazy twitter angry, man bashing forum

Lol @ people saying she was mis leading by her tweets.. If someone doesn't know she meant doubles they don't follow tennis and why would they then follow Sania's tweets on twitter?

Manjrekar was probably being a jerk and Sania responded to him in a childish way and kept going at it.. should have ignored him and moved on..

But people here are funny calling her misleading and names, morons..

Lol bro name me one person who got misled by her tweet? Do you honestly think her tweet led to even a single person assuming she is ranked 1 in singles? You think tribals from Jharkhand who don't know about tennis follow her on twitter and got misled by her tweet? No one got misled this "she is misleading people" is just an excuse for Sania haters to talk crap about her..

I'm in no ways her fan haven't even watched her play for ages apart from her Olympic loss.. but people bashing her for her tweet is uncalled for..

I just came and saw this thread.

Agree with people. Sania was misleading.

I thought you were sensible Indian? If you are so sensible rack your brains around a bit and tell me you honestly think her tweet misled even a single person into believing she is ranked 1 in singles?

I think we need a poll here Abdullah719...

There seems to be two groups of people. We need a poll to know who was right and who deserved it!

It's not about who is right or wrong bro.. Sania is a normal middle class upbringing Indian with emotions she was happy and posted a simple tweet for her followers who already know she meant doubles.. manjereker comes and passes a cheap shot which was wrong and then Sania goes after him which is also wrong and could have been avoided..

The people who are saying she is misleading people are just plain stupid or haters to think anyone who follows Sania would have been misled by her tweet.. it's not like she went ashram's in Himalayas or tribal areas of Jharkhand and told everyone she is rank 1 in tennis to mislead those people.. lack of common sense is indeed a cause of concern amongst PPers

Don't be so confident brother. Hehe.

"Misleading" doesn't have to mean misleading people who anyway know what she is talking about.

Misleading can mean the post can IMPLY something else in a general sense EVEN IF everyone knows the truth.

I will give you a cricket example.

"Murali averages 23 in Tests. Warne averages 25 in Tests. Ashwin averages 24 in tests."

Is that post misleading or not?

Of course yes. Those other 2 toured outside way more and still had those numbers.

Now does ANY cricket fan NOT know this fact? Of course, they all know. But the post will still be called misleading cos it is misleading in the general sense.

---

Moral of the story: Never doubt SIF. Ever. :hafeez2

Lol the analogy you gave is pretty different bro And can't be used in this context.. I don't think anyone was misled by her tweet everyone knows she meant doubles even someone who doesn't follow tennis would know she meant doubles.. its just a non issue being blown out of proportion tbf..

Btw out of curiosity what do you think of Sania and her achievements for Indian sports?

MIG said it perfectly.

If you don't follow Tennis then you may have been fooled or surprised.

However if you do then you should know what she was implying - Sanjay must have known so he deliberately tried to correct her by saying she's number in a certain format only.

He provoked her so got an appropriate response, end of.

It was an apt example cos no one said Sania misled people. They said she had a misleading tweet. World of difference as explained in my previous post.

Sania's achievements are a BIG BIG BIG deal for Indian sports.

Well, Twitter has a character limit - perhaps that was the reason. The original Tweet just fits within the character limit.

Well in today's world of social media and people ready to pounce on a person on every small opportunity I guess you are right.. These days people are so scrutinising that celebrities need to carefully word everything they say.. imagine you went and scored an 80 and another batsmen scored 100 and you guys won the match next day in school you go and tell your friends you scored 80 and you guys won the match, that’s not misleading anyone IMO you diss score 80 and you won he match similarly Sania is ranked 1 and everyone knows its in doubles she did not had to tag martina..

But yes with all the scrutiny on social media these days she could have put in doubles in her original post even though I personally think it was not required..

So would you rate her as the biggest female sports icon of India? Above PT Usha?

I felt Sania's actually tweet wasn't all that bad. It was ok.

She just didn't realize that ALL she needed to do was reply "my bad....doubles I mean ofcourse" to Manju and he would have become a unanimous villain.

But yeah in general...these days, a wrong tweet can ruin your life. Have to be careful with what you say.

PT Usha did stuff when no one even imagined Indian females could compete at the world level let alone almost get an Olympic medal. Forgive me if there were any Indian females who achieved great stuff before her. I don't remember any.

Milkha Singh and PT Usha will always remain special in that regard.

Right now, I don't feel there is one female icon above all.

its not about people getting fooled, its her intent to suggest something else that has been caught out.

Okay so she's a doubles no. 1. She doesn't mention doubles, the pic she shares is of just herself.

Now tell me one thing, would TOI put up a front page news saying India becomes no.1 team in world cricket and put pictures of ODI side winning.

I mean come on, people who know the sport know its about test cricket, so why bother with format name or which jersey player are wearing in the pic.

Get my point? Sanjay may have had malicious intent in calling her out but Sania did provide him with an opportunity.

How dare this guy mess with our bhabi? We Pakistanis should ruin his wiki page and trash his twitter.

Manjrekar has courage to call a spade a spade. He also tweeted against MNS who are against Pakistani artists, and took a stand against those goons.

Don't like both of them. I think more people on social have probably supported sania and i am sure pakistanis would have also supported her.

I can understand Sania's reaction, to be belittled and mocked by someone who has not held a tennis racket in his life. Sanjay wasn't even a good cricketer, he just made a career out of talking. No one takes crap from losers.

This.

Sania must have tweeted him back "Atleast I'm no.1 at something":yk

Sanjay Manjrekar always reminds me of Singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya. Both of them are bitter and jealous individuals.

Though Manjrekar is a wuss, suckup and plain irritating sometimes, he is right here about Sania Mirza's tweet.

Sania should have mentioned doubles. Her tweet was misleading. I have seen her play some singles matches and she totally sucks. Just does not have it in her to win singles consistently. Kind of like Mahesh Bhupathi.

Sania has won a lot in doubles where the competition is not really top class. If Top Singles players start playing doubles too, the likes of Sania, Bhupathi etc will never win anything. Just 2nd or 3rd round exists there too at best.

Don't like that Sanjay dude but he won that battle by way of TKO

Sanjay has.a point Sania at least couldve mentioned her partner rather than trying to take all the credit for herself

Exactly. How could she ignore her partner's contribution. There is no way she could have done this without Shoaib :malik

How is Sania in the wrong here? Everyone who follows her on twitter is presumably a tennis fan who knows that she is a doubles player. Sanjay is a tool and I have never liked him. Good for Sania to put him in his place.

Sania is in the right, Sanjay took a clear dig when it's common knowledge to anyone who follows her she is a doubles player.

He probably was rejected by her a long time ago and has a chip on his shoulder.
