Indian tennis star Sania Mirza put all rumours to rest surrounding her younger sister's wedding plans and confirmed that Anam Mirza will be marrying former Indian cricket team captain Mohammad Azharuddin's son, Asad.
"She (Anam) is actually getting married in December. We just came back from her bachelorette trip in Paris. We are really excited. She is marrying a lovely boy. His name is Asad and he happens to be the son of Mohammad Azharuddin and we are really excited about it," Sania was quoted as saying by Times of India on Saturday.
Anam Mirza, who is seven years younger than Sania, had shared pictures from her bachelorette party in Paris last month. But rumours about Anam and Asad's relationship had started doing the rounds ever since Sania posted a picture with Asad in March and captioned it, "Family".
Speaking about her own marriage, Sania recently revealed that she was once asked to stop playing as "no one would marry" her if her complexion turned "dark" due to the rigours of an outdoor sport.
Sania, who has three doubles and an equal number of mixed doubles Grand Slams to her credit, reflected on the challenges she faced during a panel discussion on women and leadership.
"To start with, parents, neighbours, aunties and the uncles (need to) stop telling you how dark you will become and no one will marry you if you play a sport. I was just eight (when this came up) and everybody thought nobody is going to marry me because I would get dark. I thought to myself I am just a kid, I'll be fine," Sania revealed last week at the World Economic Forum.
Sania remains India's most successful woman tennis player with 3 doubles and mixed doubles Grand Slam titles to her credit. She had risen to a career-high world No. 27 in mid-2007 in the WTA singles chart.
Married to former Pakistan cricket team captain Shoaib Malik, Sania is currently working towards a comeback to the professional circuit next year after taking a break to become a mother.
