What's new

Sarfaraz Ahmed dropped from Test and T20I teams

Had great hopes when he first broke in to the side. Was aggressive with the bat and brilliant behind the stumps as well. Now it seems the end of his career has started.

The media tours before and during the World Cup made him too big for his boots
Same thing happened with kohli, which is why he nearly got dropped as captain

The captain needs to be team men, not dictators or rebels to their own boardroom

This is a horrendous tweet, even worse from a member of the coaching staff. What is he trying to say? That Sarfaraz will never ever make it back to the team? Maybe Moin Khan was on to something about Misbah and Waqar never liking Sarfaraz

seems like a lobby is riled up by the sacking of T20 captaincy. Sarfraz Ahmed good T20I record is one of the biggest hoax I have seen. Even bigger than Malik's 9 consecutive ODI wins as a captain which was brought up every time by Black Zero to defend Malik's captaincy.

The Karachiites should be happy that Sarfraz has been relieved of a burden that was weighing heavily on his shoulders.

This explains why this mediocre cricketer was untouchable despite consistently failing. Amazing how much power some lobbies in our cricket has.

The passion dwindled.

Recently he looked tired of captaincy, confused and fed-up.

Has any other international team sacked their captain while they were no.1 in the rankings after 1 series loss? Only in Pakistan.

Because he was in poor batting form, and also he was unfit and unprofessional. Misbah wanted a positive, high performance culture. Sarfraz was a bad influence on the dressing room.

Misbah was responsible for bring back akmal and shehzad, 2 walking wickets, not sarfraz.

We lost in South Africa, lost the 1 game to England as well, so not one series. Plus it's less about his captaincy and more just about his performances as a player. The likes of Babar, Imad, Shaheen and Shadab carried us to the #1 ranking while Sarfraz was hiding at #9 and was basically a specialist keeper.

Has any other international team tolerated a captain who hasn't performed with the bat in any format for 2.5 long years ?

He's talking about his services as captain, so I don't see an issue with this.

Has any other international team tolerated a captain who hasn't performed with the bat in any format for 2.5 long years ?

He is a wicket-keeper batsman. I don't think we have had any outstanding 'wicketkeeper' batsmen who's averages were exceptional as captains. Rashid Latif and Moin Khan have both been captains but have they been outstanding performers with the bat?

Secondly there can be a debate about Sarfraz in test matches, in t20s he had actually been pretty good with the bat.

I think its a disservice to change a captain a year before the world cup in t20s atleast.

Has any other international team tolerated a captain who hasn't performed with the bat in any format for 2.5 long years ?

Tim Paine for Australia has been pretty mediocre for over a year

Karachi people have such a victim mentality. A protest about someone who should have been dropped years ago. :)))

Number 1 ranking means nothing when you've just lost to Sri Lanka's C team 3-0 at home in a 3 match series, been awful as skipper, terrible as a batsman and your body language has been abysmal.

You mean the 3-0 loss with two walking wickets that were opposed by the captain but forced into the team by the coach/selector?

if only you had watched the matches and his hopeless batting. Sometimes stats don't tell the exact story.

Exactly. Sarfraz faced like 1/3 of the deliveries faced in the entire series. In the first game he ran Iftikhar out and batted too slow. In the second game he batted slow again and left the lower order with too much to do. The last game was the worst, he came in when we were needing 9 an over and when he got out the rate was 13...

Basically what he did was ensure that anybody who comes after him would have to attempt to score a 50 off 20 balls to win the game.

Same could be said for akmal and shehzad.

Those guys were making a comeback after a while which is a lot of pressure on its own whereas Sarfaraz has been playing non stop for the past 3 years. Comparing apples and oranges

you need to worship players like these to please the mafia in our cricketing system. I think you should how our system works.

Has any other international team sacked their captain while they were no.1 in the rankings after 1 series loss? Only in Pakistan.

Do you even have any understanding of cricket, ever played properly, know tactics etc, or are you just one of those fans that have no knowledge and shout at the tv screen and just like certain players for not much reason,

I dont understand why they are talking about him like this as if he has retired....If he come back to his old form who knows

He is thanking him for his service to Pakistan as captain. I think it's pretty clear he will never be captain again. He hasn't said anything about him not returing as a player.

Appalled at the support pouring for Sarfaraz at ministerial level, and as far as going for a public protest. It is so embarrassing that it is not even funny anymore.

Such is his miserable form, that he doesn't even deserve to be in team. He was holding on to public/media support as skipper having made no contribution with the bat since 2017.

As skipper, averages 25 in tests, 32 in ODIs and 27 in T20Is. During his earth-shattering last 2 years, we've had Babar, Imam, Haris, Rizwan, Fakhar - even Hafeez and Malik average higher than Sarfaraz.

If these are the numbers that we will go out chest-thumping on the streets for, then God help Pakistan cricket.

I’m impressed with the PCB for once. They are often accused of indefinitely tolerating mediocrity - these ruthless decisions are said to not be in their character. It’s a cutthroat move but the right one.

There is no such thing as done and dusted in our cricket.

He will come back. Mark my words!

Haha. True. Given that we still receive the annual round of demands from a small group of people for Salman Butt to be recalled - there is hope for everyone!

if only you had watched the matches and his hopeless batting. Sometimes stats don't tell the exact story.

Exactly.

Ran Iftikhar out, wasted so many deliveries, lacklustre batting, yet some talking as if he was dropped after making 3 centuries.

But those 67 runs in 3 innings at a sr of 108 were legendary :)

The number that Sarfaraz comes in to bat in and the team situation, he has to have the ability to shift gears and to hit big at the end, which he does not have and it has hurt Pakistan badly in a lot of games

You could literally read from his face going back to pavilion that he just didn't want to be out there. It was like he had given up. There is a reason why he refused to captain Sindh.

He promoted himself up the order, made others bat below him, yet still made a mess of every innings in the 3 matches.

Instead of leading from the front, he batted slowly and did not help his team to victory.

No one is looking at the big white elephant in the room - Sarfraz’s wicket keeping has been poor and declining in every game at an alarming rate. Everyone failed with bat this series and none more than the guy replaced Sarfraz as T20 Captain, therefore holding batting stats against him might not be fair, but being specialist WK & Captain, his keeping was unacceptable and his captaincy was atrocious.

He is sacked rightly and won’t be in ODI job either for sure. Of the 3 formats, I found him most vulnerable in ODI in Captaincy - for sure PCB can see that as well. That first ODI against SRL should give then enough clue.

Should have given him a series purely as a wk batsman to ensure whether he is totally useless or was it captaincy pressure.

He was doing well before his captaincy stint.

PCB says Sarfaraz Ahmed will remain in top central contract category, contrary to rumours of relegation

Karachi: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has made it clear that ousted captain Sarfaraz Ahmed will remain in category A of the central contracts given to players as he is available for selection in all three formats of the game.

Dismissing rumors that the board had decided to relegate Sarfaraz to a lower category, a PCB spokesperson said Sarfaraz would retain his top category in the central contracts which run till July next year.

"There will be no change in his central contract as he is available for selection in all three formats," the spokesperson said.

Babar Azam, Pakistan's new T20 captain, and leg-spinner, Yasir Shah are the two other players in category A of the contracts.

The board has also issued an apology for a faux pas it committed just at the time it was announced that Sarfaraz had been removed as captain from all three formats.

The board's digital media team had uploaded a short video on its official page, in which a few players were found celebrating as a team official waved to Sarfaraz to walk off.

The board said it had beforehand decided to release the video as part of its build-up to the World T20 but unfortunately at the same time the news about the change in captaincy also came.

The release of the video and change in captaincy upset many cricket followers especially the supporters of Sarfaraz, who took it as an insult to the former skipper.

Cricket fans in Karachi gathered outside former captain Sarfraz Ahmed’s residence to throw a protest in favor of him and against the policies of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

The cricket lovers and supporters of Sarfraz recorded a full-strength protest and asked PCB to reconsider their decision of removing the wicket-keeper batsman from captaincy in all three formats.

“Tell me what was the reason behind sacking Sarfraz. I agree that his performance was not too good in recent times but what about his achievements which he marked for this country,” a supporter questioned while talking to the ARY Sports.

“Removing him from ODI and Test is somewhere acceptable but can the PCB give any valid reason behind removing him from T20I captaincy? He has won 12 T20I series out 14 for you,” another fan lamented.

The fans appealed to the Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan to look into this matter and call back Sarfraz as captain in shorter format of the game. “We would like to request PM Khan to look into this matter as merit has been overlooked,” fans appealed.

Karachiites chanted the slogans of ‘Justice for Sarfraz’ and ‘Sarfraz Zindabad’. On the other hand, they also bashed former pacer Shoaib Akhtar who called the people of Karachi ‘coward’.

It is pertinent to mention here that the PCB removed Sarfraz from all formats with immediate effect. Azhar Ali has been made captain in Test cricket while Babar Azam will lead the national T20I team till the upcoming T20 World Cup in Australia.

I'm sure Sarfraz himself would be embarrassed with these 'protests'.

He has no one but himself to blame for this. No one, with a sound mind, objects to Sarfraz being stripped off captaincy.

Sarfaraz has had his time as captain. His body language is negative....as a captain he seems clueless as well. That moment of him yawning during a match in England recently has become somewhat of a trademark for him:rp He hasn't done anything for the team for a long time now, change will benefit him as well. There is no victimization that certain people in the country feel that way neither will it make any difference. It is about Pakistan nor Karachi or Sukkur.

Sarfraz looked done.

Rizwan should definitely replace him in Test cricket.

As for LOIs, might be worth giving Rohail Nazir an opportunity. Basically play him as a specialist keeper batting at #7/8.

We certainly can't do that, especially in ODI'S.
That was already the problem with Sarfraz, we were playing 10 against 11.

Pakistan’s T20 ranking was always a joke and they were going to be humbled badly in the WT20 next year. It was going to be an Asia Cup style reality check.

However, when we inevitable fail under Babar, people will somehow forget the defeats against England and Sri Lanka and argue that Sarfraz’s absence proved to be the decisive factor.

They need to remove him from the ODI team as well. Why in the world are people protesting to have him back in the team as captain?

Just glad Misbah had the right insight to see and understand how our T20 rankings are FAKE.

I've always said, T20 rankings do not matter. And being no.1 was a joke on top of that.

KARACHI: Country’s former stalwarts on Sunday lashed out at the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for acting in haste in removing Sarfraz Ahmed as captain in all three formats of the game.

Most of the former captains and players termed the removal of Sarfraz on Friday as unjust. Not surprisingly the head coach-cum-chief selector Misbah-ul-Haq and bowling coach Waqar Younis were also targeted and blamed for engineering the ouster of Sarfraz.

Sarfraz has been replaced as Test captain by Azhar Ali while Babar Azam will take over in T20s. A decision on the One-Day captaincy will be finalised in due course. The wicket-keeper/batsman is also unlikely to be part of the touring Pakistan T20 or Test squad to Australia later this month.

Batting legend Javed Miandad who is an ex-Pakistan captain said since Sarfraz had gained considerable experience as a captain in the last two years, he should have been given time to regain his form instead of just sacking him.

“Azhar’s appointment as Test captain is okay but if the Board wanted to appoint Babar as white-ball captain, they should have first groomed him as I fear the burden of T20 captaincy will affect his batting,” Miandad said.

Former Test batsman, ex-head coach and chief selector Mohsin Khan said: “He [Sarfraz] took Pakistan to number one in T20 cricket and he is a fighter. This is a decision taken in haste and it could also affect the career of Babar.”

Former captain Rashid Latif minced no words in stating that PCB had erred by making Babar captain of the T20 side. “He is a selfish player and we have seen this in international cricket and now in the national T20 championship. Sarfraz is not a selfish captain and sacrificed his position many times for the team. He did not deserve this treatment,” he said.

Another ex-skipper Moin Khan said he was shocked at the way the Board had treated Sarfraz.

“He [Sarfraz] has shown himself to be a fine captain and yes he was struggling a bit for form but when a senior player is under pressure you have to encourage and back him, not dump him like this,” Moin said.

“He noted that Misbah and Waqar had never been fond of Sarfraz and with them in charge, this sacking was expected.

“Misbah and Waqar never liked Sarfraz. I am shocked that the PCB has removed Sarfraz from captaincy in T20I cricket. He has led Pakistan to 11 consecutive T20I series’ win and you can’t remove him due to few poor performances,” he said.

Moin further warned Misbah was being handed too much power. “I think making a single person too powerful won’t work for Pakistan’s cricket.”

Former Test pacer Aaqib Javed also criticised the PCB for taking a strange decision. “I don’t know from where these decisions are coming but they make no sense at all to me. Sarfraz should have been relieved as Test captain but the Board should have given him some time as captain of white-ball cricket.”

Another former captain Ramiz Raja, however, felt that the PCB had taken a brave decision to appoint Babar as T20 captain and said people defending Sarfraz should accept his poor form in recent months as skipper.

“We were struggling in Test cricket, we did not reach semifinals of the World Cup. We lost to a Sri Lankan ‘B’ team in T20 cricket and his own form is on a decline. I think the Board acted properly by investing in a young player in the white-ball formats. If Babar develops into a good leader he can also become Test captain,” he said.

Former fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar said Sarfraz only had himself to blame for his ouster.

“I saw it coming for Sarfraz. Nobody else is to be blamed but him. Been telling him for two years to pull up his socks,” Shoaib tweeted.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, he said: “The situation which has occurred is due to his own fault. It was not someone else’s fault. I also want to tell you that they will not even keep him in the team. I can guarantee that right now. They will not give him a chance in the team.”

The PCB, meanwhile, made it clear that ousted Sarfraz will remain in category A of the central contracts given to players as he is available for selection in all three formats of the game.

Weren't these guys the same ones who used to complain about Safaraz and wanted him to be removed? Now that PCB has removed him, they are saying it's a wrong decision?

Or were they some other set of "experts"?

Just glad Misbah had the right insight to see and understand how our T20 rankings are FAKE.

I've always said, T20 rankings do not matter. And being no.1 was a joke on top of that.

T20I rankings do matter because anyone can think they are number 1 which doesn't mean they are until and unless officially named. You have to give credit to Sarfraz for this no matter what.

Misbah speaking to the media today:

"A lot of things have been said in the media regarding captaincy and Sarfaraz. The chairman, Wasim Khan and myself had a lot of discussion on this matter, we looked at all these things and analysed them. The final constitutional decision regarding captaincy is with the Chairman. There are all kinds of strange theories in the media but it's a simple thing, like the Chairman also said: Over Sarfaraz's form, and the pressure he was playing under, it was on the basis of that that the decision to remove Sarfaraz from captaincy was taken. We have always backed him, he is a good enough player, he has done a lot for Pakistan and he has performances as captain also, but this decision was taken on the basis of his recent form. Regarding a comeback, it's straightforward. Domestic cricket is happening, it's just a matter of regaining his form. Once that happens, the doors are open. There is no conspiracy against him, this is a clear message for Sarfaraz as well as everyone else"

PCB "Change in captaincy due to Sarfaraz Ahmed’s drop in overall form which has also affected his confidence".

PCB "The appointments were confirmed after Sarfaraz Ahmed was left out of both formats due to the drop in his overall form during the past few series".

Ehsan Mani "It has been a difficult decision to drop Sarfaraz Ahmed, who has performed well as a player and a leader. But, his loss in form and confidence is visible and, in the best interest of the team, it has been decided to leave him out and provide him the opportunity to reflect and regroup himself and try to reclaim his form away from international cricket".

Strong words from PCB and the Chairman.

What's in store for Sarfaraz?

Has he got the desire and mental toughness to find a way back into the Pakistan team or do you think he is done and dusted?

He should have retire from ODIs and T20Is long time ago and only play Test cricket. Then he would have been still in Test team as he is pretty good Test cricketer. But he insist on playing ODIs and T20Is as well which affected his Test form and now he is out of team from all formats. Done and dusted.

I think Safraz deserved to be dropped and really has himself too blame especially regarding captaincy.

But I fully expect him to go away and come back harder and be back in the Pakistan team

Working on his comeback

"Sindh’s fightback was led by captain Sarfaraz Ahmed. The wicketkeeper-batsman scored a 62-ball 54 before he was dismissed by Naseem. Sarfaraz spent 75 minutes at the crease and hit seven fours."

Sarfraz will come back in side sooner or later. lets be honest captaincy destroyed him he got greedy and took all 3 formats where he should have just considered T20 captaincy only and then see from thereon.
he has performed in England and Australia as a player and i feel he will be coming back . but should just carry on playing as player . no more captaincy

he is not a T20 player! why he should be awarded T20 captaincy? this is insane

He was awarded I’m talking about when he was awarded
He should have just taken that not hop on to other formats

Victim mentality on display again from a specific city. Shameful.

You do realize that a whole city doesn’t feel that way? There will always be people who will find reasons to complain. In labelling everyone in one massive city as having “victim mentality”, you’re pretty much doing exactly what they do by acting like they speak for everyone.

I think he's done.

Never say never, but it's going to be tough for him to get back into international cricket.

Rizwan deserves a chance in the next few series at least.

The problem is that for the last 3 years Sarfraz has given up on batting properly and turned into a hard-hands slasher like Umar Akmal at his worst.

62 balls to score 54 runs in a first class match suggests that he is doing more of the same.

This is the guy whose last Test score over 60 (81 v Australia at Abu Dhabi) was notable for him failing to leave a single delivery outside off-stump.

Not one.

This is how Sarfaraz has always batted. He has always been a very busy player. His batting declined because he let his fitness suffer and the quick singles, ones, twos and threes he was known for as well as his stroke play against spinners was no longer there

The problem is that a Test wicketkeeper needs to be capable not just of occasional fifties but of rregulr scores over 80.

And you can't survive outside Asia if you don't leave balls outside off-stump.

Sarfaraz at his peak could sweep pacers for six. It's shocking how quickly his batting regressed. He was really good in England 2016 in the ODIs, and that was the end of him. Never consistently performed after that, in fact he has very few performances of note after that.

That sweep thing was in UAE only - dont ever recall him doing that away from 'home'. But he did present us (and maybe could in future as well) as the Moin Khan clone that we wanted.

Yeah it was only in UAE but it was still special to watch. These days he's getting out frequently sweeping spinners.

He was a different player when he wasnt a captain. Captaincy certainly impacted him as a captain hat being said we dont have any captaincy choices. I am not very hopeful with Azhar Ali and Babar azam as captains
