Wicket-keepers in the Pakistan One-Day Cup - No future competition for Sarfaraz Ahmed?

With Umar Akmal, Adnan Akmal, Kamran Akmal and Rizwan as 4 keepers in the current tournament .. The person benefiting the most from this is someone who is not even playing the tournament, i. e. Sarfaraz Ahmed. Why would he even work on his fitness and game when he can clearly see that his coast is clear for a couple of years atleast

Sarfraz worked very hard to get the job he is holding now. But, looks like he is not motivated enough now as he is taking his job for granted. He is in the good books of Inzi, Sethi and Mickey for being very cooperative to them, no need to work hard on fitness and form, smart man.

Abid ali also playing as keeper you can see in todays game.

Abid's keeping isn't good (makeshift keeper) but he is certainly the best batsman out of them.

keeping wsie Jamal Anwar was really good but his batting deteriorated now he isnt finding spot in Pindi side after emergence of Umair Masood.

Umair Masood is a very good prospect but unfortunately he isn't a senior hence not playing.

Bismillah has been brilliant so far in batting; how are his keeping skills?

Always been worried about this . Sarfraz fitness is poor and he is already "30" and we aren't even trying to get a replacement ready.

Agreed. Sarfaraz seems to be the only keeper, if he gets injured/needs a rest I have no idea who will keep instead of him.

Bismillah Khan of Quetta playing for Balochistan is quite good. He is an attacking opening baatsman and his keeping is also fine.

Sarfaraz is'nt an Akmal or a Malik that he is indispensable for the selection cmmte.. They'll be too happy to discard him off once his performance goes down.

doesn't that apply to pretty much anyone ?

Please google the XI and squads selected who played for Pakistan. How many players from Sindh, Balochistan and KPK played in that team. There are many like Asim Kamal and Fawad ALam who were removed without reason and there are players from LAhore region [Shehzad, Akmals, Malik] who have been kept without reason.

rizwan is actually the best keeper of the lot and you can even compare his keeping skills with the likes of qdk, dhoni etc.. but his batting is below par and nowhere near international level.. he got good domestic batting stats wonder why he's not being able to replicate that in international level..

what makes sarfi a better choice is his terrific captaincy skills and his batting is far better than any other wicket keeper in our domestic system..

i don't why is the thread even came in on first place; dhoni or sangakarra or even adam gilchrist doesn't have substitute keeper;

I hope Sarfaraz win more matches for Pakistan.. and within year and half after world cup should hand over t-20 and concentrate on ODIs and Test.

Good Player's don't need substitute; after 7 years dhoni still there; but i agree that india did not find his replacement yet.

But But In Asia You never know a Superstar Keeper is on the rise without anything being notice of him.. so keep your finger closed...

Sarfraz is keeping his place in squad as a captain; otherwise he was history by now even before PAK Cup.

It's crazy but Kami Akmal probably would have been in the team if Sarfraz was not the captain.

Let's hope Sarfraz does better with the bat as well as we do not have many alternatives.

Truth is, they are keeping both Kamran & Rizwan out of squad to keep Sarfraz comfortable. I don't have much confidence on Ul Haq, the CS of PCB; but Mickey Arthur won't carry a ticking bomb as his only WK for a 2 months tour, when the WK is Captain & certain starter for 3 formats.

It was perfectly fitting as well - Kamran is batting well enough to cover a batsman's spot, while Rizwan is easily better WK than both Kmran & Sarfraz - makes it as specialist WK.

yup, but no likes to aknowledge this for obvious reasons

If I were an upcoming cricketer I would be licking my lips looking at the big void which Sarfaraz can leave. I would do everything in my power to become a good wicket keeper batsman because I know thats where the opportunity lies.

I agree with you. Especially wrt limited overs format.

Umair is not included in any squad ?

UA shouldn't be keeping wickets.

Good thread.

Rohail Nazir is part of one of the squads.. Umair Masood or Afridi are not part of any squad..

Sarfraz is in a free fall mode.

Can't bat, can't field, though kept decently in the recent ENG series, but isn't a good keeper if you look at his overall performances. Technically bad, overweight as well.

So, the million dollar question is, who else is out there, in the domestics, who can actually hold a bat and also keep decently?

We desperately need someone who can challenge Sarfraz's spot. If someone's a decent keeper and can bat, he becomes an automatic selection in the squad.

But, is there anyone?

Please don't mention Rizwan. He's a dud with the bat (important!) and not good enough as a keeper either.

Good luck. Pakistan cricket is filled with below average wicket-keeper batsmen who might not be big fans of Kamran Akmal's route.

Other countries replace ATG and we have fans telling me that we can't replace Sarfraz. There are keepers who can keep competently and average 30 which is what specialist captain is averaging in the last 2 years .

But our fans choose to bury their hands in the sand and accept mediocrity. Even if the replacement isn't as good as Sarfraz, we pick someone else. That's what happens in sports teams when players aren't good enough. You try new ones.

Have you not been following him this season? or the last?

Or are you judging him off his performances that you saw for Pakistan around 2 years ago?

Wake up and smell the coffee.

I admit i have not seen his domestic performances. Last i remember he had an absolute ***** technique for a batsman.

Has he improved? Any stats?
