Completely ridiculous- Afridi and Razzaq need to go

Rizwan is not in great form and Sarfaraz might just be a better option in tests in terms of batting but I really doubt he will offer the same level of quality behind the wickets that Rizwan does. And in tests that is way more important. Whatever he contributes with the bat will be pointless if he misses chances behind the stumps like he usually does.

Rizwan was out of form but it wasn't as bad as it is being made out to be and Sarfaraz isn't a massive upgrade. But his inclusion and that of Hamza (albeit very deserving) are not surprising considering the changes in the selection committee.

Pakistan selection matters never cease to amaze you. For an outsider seeing Rizwan dropped to play Sarfaraz sounds completely devoid of logic. I can understand had some youngster been given a chance to try out a new player but getting Sarfaraz back doesn't make any sense to me.

Playing his first test on his home ground! What a comeback

What did Safraz achieve as a test batsmen?

Rather someone with potential got given a chance

He wasn’t a batsman and shouldn’t be judged as one. He was a no6-7 keeper/batsman.

This wasn’t some delusional aim at making him a no4 batsman like they did with Rizwan. In his first few years Sarfraz played some crucial knocks. I remember in the 2016 series in England, Geoff Boycott on TMS actually said that for him Sarfraz was Pakistan’s man of the series. Even during the series a lot of the commentators were saying there was an argument that he was the best keeper/batsman in the world.

Yes he got very complacent a couple of years later, but you can’t discount his contribution.

Done well but fitness seems to be an issue as is limping now.

50 on his comeback - dream comeback some would say.

Post that CT win....his form and fitness both nose-dived.

He was basically playing as a specialist captain through 2018-19 period with guys like Hasan Ali and Wahab Riaz batting ahead of him in LoIs on many occasions.

He was very good during that 2014-16 period.

He was very very good in the first few years of his career. His counterattacking style often shifted the momentum in Pakistan's favor and his keeping was decent. But then in the second half of his captaincy he let his fitness go and was either a nervous wreck or a robot on the field. For me despite these runs what should determine his place in the side is his glovework. His fitness is still questionable and his reflexes obviously not what they were 5-10 years ago so it will interesting to see how the keeping side of his game goes.

Good innings by him. Now he needs to be more consistent to keep his spot in test atleast

Never been a fan of him, but he has earned my respect. Despite being dropped from everywhere and having a pretty dramatic fall from grace, he didn't go on Twitter and make any toxic subtweets, nor did he go on agenda driven TV shows and talk s**t about his fellow team members. Just kept his head down, scored runs in domestic and waited for his chance again.

Exemplary from Sarfraz. And something alot of other toxic senior snakes can learn from.

Agreed, he has always been team man.

Well done Sarfraz and great for PK cricket. Riz needed competition and did warn naive posters that our WK lose focus without competition but alas they didn't understand what I meant

Ideal batter for such conditions as we have in Karachi today.

Sarfaraz's 10 highest Test scores have been in UAE/Asia.

Highlights of his 86

Credit to Sarfaraz.

Did not tweet nonsense even once he was out of the team.

Did not go on TV shows to chat nonsense.

Just went back to domestics to perform.

Not all Pakistani players keep things classy, but Sarfi is surely one of them. Good for him

He deserves some tests at home Like posters have said he kept quiet and bided his time

Hes not a long term option but is a through team man

Well played today

Good knock by Sarfraz. To build a test team, you need to win test series at home and Sarfraz will be effective at home. And that's why I think Haris Sohail should be in the middle order for home test matches.

I'm happy to be proven wrong by Sarfraz, good knock .

If he continues his current form for a year , can play next year's WC in India and bat in middle order and we can have a proper opening pair, not the tuk-tuk, Babar-Rizwan pair.

Congrats to Sir Fraz, I look forward to his keeping, hope it goes well

Babar and Rizwan don't open in ODIs....it will be Fakhar and Imam

Top knock.

A positive change from Rizwan's timid, clueless batting, to Sarfraz's DOMINATING knock.

He plays with so much authority, at least in Asian conditions.
He knows the lost art of playing spin.

Rizwan can't bat either in Asia or SENA.

Sarfaraz Ahmed speaking to the press

"When I walked out for batting, my heartbeat was out of control. During first three balls of the innings, it felt like I was making debut"

"I needed confidence at that moment and Babar Azam supported me a lot. Alhumdulillah, things worked for me and I performed"

"I was too excited when I got to know about my comeback. Shahid Bhai texted me and I called him back. He gave me much confidence"

"I wasn't sure whether I will be able to play my 50th Test or not"

"Last four years were tough for me, but I sat in good gathering where people always motivated me. I would like to thank my friends, fans, family and media for always supporting me"

A very relieved Sarfaraz speaks about his comeback

Terrific stuff from Sarfraz and very happy for him. Although he fell from very hard after 2019, he's been supportive of the team with exceptional attitude. This is what a team players looks like. Cough cough ... Amir fans

He has been good in this Test.

But, he is now 35 (official age). So, he will probably retire soon.

Good knock and did his job, thats all that he could do. Interesting to see how well he can perform until complacency kicks in again or will he saty motivated and hungry this time to perform.

Good stuff from the Sarf, pressure was on him to perform and he delivered.

Everything bar his fitness looked good today. He looked in command against the spinners and put away the poor deliveries.

But the real test will be his WK. Any drop catches or miss stumpings will bring him crashing back to earth.

He did make statements on social media as far as I can remember.

Besides, he is a horrible keeper. Dropping a catch costs a lot more runs in a match. Batsman make you pay heavily.

He been decent, won us the Champions Trophy, had some performances time to time. Above average/much better keeper for our Pakistani standards, personally like the guy, but how long are we going to keep on trying folks that 30 plus, there was a big support around Shan Masood until I saw he is 32/33 years old, then we gave test debut to a spinner in probably England series or one before who was also 34/35. I mean what are we thinking here?

Not impressed with Sarfraz's fitness level, he was huffing and puffing when running between the wickets and was limping at times.

And his main crucial Duty in team is as a wicketkeeper .

How ever out of form rizwan was with the bat he is a vastly superior gloveman and athlete compared to sarfraz.

If sarfraz fluffs Any chances and those batsmen go onto score, his 86 runs serve no purpose .

Rizwan wasn't dropping catches he's excellent behind the stumps.

Sarfraz was kicked out of the team for a good reason a few years ago because his form declined badly but what was worse was his wicketkeeping deteriorated and his growing paunch and questionable fitness.

Any evidence? Because I don't remember him saying anything even resembling what Malik and Amir said/have been saying ever since they were dropped.

I don't think he should be keeping wickets, he's not very good behind the stumps and nowhere near Rizwan's level. But he has more utility than most batting at No.6 or 7. He has a SR of 71 in test cricket and a SR of 82 against spin, going with a pretty good career average of 37...especially for someone who bats lower down the order. Pakistan could do a whole lot worse than Sarfraz right now.

I enjoyed his innings yesterday. Very solid.

Bit of a concern as to whether he can keep wicket for the full 150ish overs if New Zealand go on to bat big in this game — the abrupt step back up to Test cricket was taking its toll in the end, as he seemed to be carrying a few niggles and moving around gingerly as his batting progressed.

Missed stumping

<div style="width: 100%; height: 0px; position: relative; padding-bottom: 46.719%;"><iframe src="https://streamable.com/e/vh49bz" frameborder="0" width="100%" height="100%" allowfullscreen style="width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute;"></iframe></div>

Rizwan would have had that and whipped the bails of like a mongoose

He missed kane Williamson

What a clown

That was a disappointing missed stumping.

Should be taking those at any level.

Good aggressive stuff from Sarfaraz - come out guns blazing - excellent against spin so good move to send him earlier

Whatever Sarfaraz does here is immaterial. His fluffed chance of Williamson is a major reason Pakistan is in this position. The only way he can play tests is as a specialist bat but he just cannot be played as a keeper any more.

I’m no Sarf fan but this obsession with one mistake needs to calm down a bit.

Nobody’s perfect and not on their comeback match after years.

Still he’s doing a great job in his first match. Give credit for that.

One mistake is all it takes. Kane was on 21 when that stumping was missed. Also, one would be lenient if this was a one off but it is something that happens every game with Sarfaraz. Yes he has batted well, but test cricket is about specialists and Sarfaraz is in the team as a keeper, the runs he scores are in addition to his main job. If he can't be consistent with the glove he shouldn't be selected as a specialist keeper.

Sarfaraz didnt just make one mistake but quite a few mistakes. He looked dead while keeping. Shows how least prepared he was to play a test match. Highly unprofessional. Even NZ tailenders were batting comfortably on this flat pancake. As such any runs Sarfaraz scores holds less value now.

He can play as a pure batsman in Pakistan team and can play for 2-3 years. Remove him from his keeping duties and get a new young keeper.

Babar, Shan and Abdullah bottled it on this flat pancake

The subject of this thread is Sarfaraz who is the prime reason why NZ got a massive lead.

Darryl Mitchell is the reason why NZ haven’t won this Test yet!

It’s cricket, things like this happen all the time!

Pathetic way to get out after being well set at 50.

All he wanted was a personal milestone.
