JEDDAH: Saudi Arabia has become the first Arab country to be granted full membership of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) following the group’s Annual General Meeting in Orlando, Florida on Friday.

The Kingdom’s accession comes as the FATF celebrates its 30th anniversary of its first meeting held in Paris in 1989.

Saudi Arabia had been a founding member of the MENA arm of the group since November 2004, and its full membership comes after it was reported the Kingdom had made “tangible progress” and for its efforts in implementing the FATF’s guidelines.

The group is responsible for issuing international standards, policies and best practices to combat money laundering, terrorist financing and proliferation.

Saudi Arabia received an invitation from FATF at the beginning of 2015 to join as an “observer member” as the group hailed the Kingdom’s position at international and regional levels, as well as its efforts in combating money laundering, financing of terrorism and proliferation of arms.

With the Kingdom becoming a FATF member, the number of permanent members in the group is now 39, including the most influential countries in the world, such as the permanent members of the Security Council and most G-20 countries.

War crimes in Yemen, one of the worst violators of human rights domestically, financing of wahabi extremism throughout the world, instigators of shia / sunni divide...

Does this organization gain credibility, or lose credibility with KSA as a full member?

Israel, US and Russia are already in FATF so why now Saudis?

So Pakistan gets threathened to be blacklisted but Saudi Arabia gets full membership? This puts FATF’s credibility to question.

True but maybe this move can help us as well :13:

IK had to contact Malaysia this time to get the third vote to rescue Pakistan from being blacklisted (China & Turkey are the other 2). If i am not wrong you need 15 votes to get out of grey list and 3 votes to stay away from blacklist.

Yes, but at what cost.

KSA already gave loans to Pakistan, now asking for a vote here too?

Their cost will be more troops to guard their borders and support against Iran.

Both of which have a steep cost in the long run.

15 votes to stay away from the grey list? Yikes. Can we rely on Saudi and Russia to vote in favour of Pakistan?

Yea as they say nothing is free in this world...

Not just them we also need to engage with these small european countries most of them are full members of FATF. (Denmark, Norway, Belgium, Greeze, Austria, Finland, Iceland, Ireland, Luxembourg, Sweden, Switzerland, Netherlands)

Islamabad requires at least 15 out of 36 votes to move out of the watchdog’s grey list, which is causing an estimated loss of $10 billion per year.

Saudis didnot vote for Pakistan the last time.

Russia has never voted in favour of Pakistan againist a India backed proposal.

Most of these small countries vote along with US UK France Germany.

What are the chances that Russia will vote in favour of Pakistan?

For now very slim. It was good diplomacy by IK to get Mahatir on board in the very last minute now the deadline is extended to October.

Should definitely gain credibility with many Indians on this site, pretty sure joshila bhai has quoted the FATF classifications many times to imply Pakistan is a terrorist state.

Mahatir doesnot get along with India. Thats well known. So his support is no surprise.

It was under Najib Razak that India-Malaysia relations prospered.

Lately the bhai you quoted and his likes had been shown mirror multiple times by third party and Pakistani ;)

I didnot imply anything. The FATF implies that. The same FATF, where pakistan is running around and trying to stay off the blacklist. I wonder why.
