RIYADH (Web Desk) – Saudi Arabia has appealed Pakistan to cooperate on formation of NATO-like military alliance of Muslim countries, sources told Dunya News.

According to sources, both sides have agreed to continue consultation on the matter.

The appeal comes at a time when Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif returned Pakistan after completing a three-day official visit to Saudi Arabia.

During the visit, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif witnessed the military exercises ‘North Thunder’.

Earlier on Friday, Nawaz Sharif held a meeting with King Salman bin Abdulaziz in the Saudi city of Hafr al-Batin and thanked him for Saudi Arabia’s strong and consistent support to Pakistan.

Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif and Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Tariq Fatemi were also present on the occasion.

During the meeting, the Prime Minister admired the successful completion of the joint military exercises that brought together contingents from about two dozen Islamic countries.

He said these exercises would promote unity among the two countries and demonstrate their resolve to further step up efforts to counter militancy and terrorism.

King Salman bin Abdulaziz said that this has enhanced cooperation and understanding between the armed forces of the two countries and reinforced the existing bilateral relations.

It may be mentioned here that the parliament last year refused to send forces to help a Saudi-led Arab coalition fighting Iran-backed Huthi rebels in Yemen.

But on January 18, Pakistan "assured the kingdom of its support" for a separate Saudi coalition of 34 nations to combat "terrorism" in the Islamic world, the Pakistani statement said.

"It was agreed that both countries would work together to defeat our common enemy -– terrorism and extremism."

Diplomats have said it remained unclear how the 34-nation coalition will work in practice.

Pakistan has deep military connections with Saudi Arabia and it has long benefited from the oil-rich kingdom‘s largesse. Nawaz Sharif himself has close personal ties with the Saudi royal family who sheltered him during years in exile.

Pretty sure this is angled towards being 'rescued' from Yemen and fighting some more proxy wars with Iran. Pakistan should refuse, as come the time when a conflict with India arises, these Arabs won't budge a finger.

What's in it for us? Saudi should support on things important to us if they want us to protect them.

What's in it for Pakistan?

Money???
Money alone is not good enough. Any assistance to Saudi Arabia should be conditional on the Saudis ceasing all financial assistance to terrorist organizations and religious seminaries that provide said terrorist organizations with manpower.

These Arabs are too scared to actually take part in any war so they want our men to risk their lives for the Arab desires.

We should stay an arm's length away from any Saudi alliance.

Instead improve our relations with Iran and India. Maybe look for a gas/oil pipeline from Iran to India and get around $5-8 billion from that every year through transit fees.

If India and Pakistan had formed a military alliance we would he dominating Asia.

Gen Raheel being pressed to become head of 34-country alliance after retirement

WASHINGTON: The alliance of 34 countries is pressing General Raheel Sharif to become the military alliance’s coalition commander-in-chief after his retirement, revealed US military and political sources.

The 34-country alliance would take actions against terrorists, who have made the lives of people miserable in member countries.

The importance of the new military alliance could be judged by the fact that its formation was announced by Saudi Defence Minister Muhammad Bin Salman in Riyadh during a press conference.

He could be the future king of Saudi Arabia. Sources said Pakistan’s military leadership’s neutral policy towards Saudi Arabia and Iran would remain intact and this office would not cause any change in policies of the Pakistani military.

Creating a legal cover to fight their wars and it seems like Pakistan will join.

Whats the point of their modern weapon that they waste money on every other year?

Does this mean they will be at state of war if with India if there was another skirmish between India and Pakistan?

The thing is, India is one of Saudi Arabia's biggest trading partners. It is a huge market for oil exports.

If anything, this deal would make Saudi Arabia pressurize Pakistan to normalize relations with India, so that Pakistani army is free to engage with Saudi Arabia's enemies in Iran, Syria, etc...

This partnership is not a great deal for Pakistan. In the short term it may help with military funding, economic aid, and subsidized energy. In the long run it would also mean a greater influence of Wahabbism in Pakistan contributing to the already growing fundamentalism and sectarianism within Pakistani society.

We would also be trading India as an enemy, with Iran as an enemy instead. This would cause enormous problems. First of all Iran shares the volatile Afghanistan and Balochistan border. This open gate for proxies could cause more damage than India could ever dream of. Make no mistake, after funding Hamas and Hezbollah, Iran knows how to engage using proxies.

If they are banding it about as a nato like alliance then the central tenet is that attack on one is attack on all. If that is not going to be the case then it's not a nato like alliance.

Iran is already using Pakistan Shias in Iraq and Syria, just that we are keeping a blind eye on Iranian interference as well. Anyway at some point, the mullah rule in Iran will come to an end and we want to be in a position to having much closer relations with them. Being in proxy war with them is not in Pakistan or their interest.

This might be a bit of a stupid question but who are the people who serve in the SAudi army? Like normal Saudi Arabs or foreigners like they do with their sports teams?

Pakistan should accept the offer...

We need to upgrade our Military ...

(Iran is not going to engage in conventional war with KSA in next 50/60 years so Pakistani army wont have to defend KSA anyway)

Mash'allah, this partnership is even more blessed one than the NATO one. Now Israel will never think of attacking Saudi arabia.

Forget the military alliance if these two nation just learn to live in peace that only will lift many out of poverty.

Peace won't result in decline of poverty. Corruption, nepotism, division, and many more things are required to have a stable country.

Clowns that these countries elect as leaders and politicians won't let that happen for a long time. Applies to majority of the developing countries. There will not be any peace between these 2 countries for a very long time. Poor standards of media and politicians will always continue to brain both of their citizens. People don't even bother to find out if certain informations are true or not. It is all he said, she said.

In yemen they use Colombian, African and blackwater mercenaries along with their own troops.

Saudi Arabia don't need Pakistan in a Nato style alliance as the US will protect them if any country was to invade or attack them.

They probably want Pakistan to do all the donkey work by fighting their proxy wars.

Well the master rule in this alliance is likely to be that if there is any threat to the Saudi monarchy, it is a threat to all.

Pakistan has no choice but Saudis

With erratic weather patterns , water problems , and Indian control of the rivers , Pakistan is another ticking famine time bomb like the Horn of Africa

If agricultural famine hit Pakistan from flooding or lack of water we will be worse than Somalia Ethiopia Sudan Eritrea situation.

regular Saudis...foreigners can barley speak the language and are not considered for government services.

We will be dominating so much more than just Asia..India and Pakistan in peace with each-other will create a massive power block with both China and Russia in neighbor and having good relations with one of these countries.

I dont think bigger power will ever want this to happen.

That's why the US is financing Pak Army (against India) and promoting war in Afghanistan (against China, so they can't have access to the Central Asian energy corridor to sustain their growing GDP rate).

Any alliance must include Iran, Syria and Yeman in it too as well as lots of petro dollars flowing to pak army, otherwise its useless.

The Saudis got their wish.

Pakistani takes reins of ‘Muslim Nato’

Saudi Arabia’s ambitious young defence minister has scored a coup by recruiting the former head of Pakistan’s army to run a new military alliance set up to counter Iran’s growing influence in the Middle East.

The appointment of General Raheel Sharif to run the “Muslim Nato” gives life to efforts by the Saudi deputy crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman, to attract support from dozens of Islamic countries.

Prince Mohammed, 31 and second in line to his father, King Salman, has put himself at the forefront of the younger generation of Saudis determined to stand up to Iran as well as to insulate the kingdom from the threat of Isis. Donald Trump backed the plans at a White House meeting last month.

Pakistans biggest enemy is Saudi Arabia. And we bend over backwards for them. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot.

Pak should give them a list of money or weapons that we need. Also, Pakistanis working in SA should be given a special status after all they need our help more. Third demand should be to stop meddling in Pak's internal affairs with their Sunni-Shia games. SA should mend their relationship with Iran as well.

Idiotic to see it branded as Muslim NATO by Saudis, this alliance looks more like Sunni-NATO or Anti-Iran NATO.

I'm glad India is not involved in any of this nonsense. We should remain neutral and slowly demilitarize and start focusing on other things to improve our nation. In future, I'm afraid Pakistan will be too busy fighting their own internal terrorism. Hopefully they too realize that they need to focus on making things better for their public and not care about flexing their muscles.
