What is the status there in these days?

My eldest brother was telling me that in old days there used to be alot school cricket in Pakistan.

I mean if that is on it's way out, will we not miss out on some good talent?

I think that there are some colleges and universities from the British era that still play cricket and it is an integral part of the schooling. Off the top of my head I can of is Aitchson and a couple schools in Northern Pakistan.

No proper facilities or coaching...kids play with tape balls and bats they bring from home with wickets marked on the wall with chalk...like it was when we were in school. The CRICKET is there if that answers your question...

They do have school tournaments and the like, surely? Where they play with the red leather ball?

In my day late 90s. School cricket was huge. The yearly inter school tournament was a big tournament and hard to win. U had to win 7 games on a knockout basis to reach the final.

In my team we had Faisal Iqbal and Danish kaneria playing, and some very good cricketers.

We played against afridi and hasan Raza on a regular basis.

Dr shah used to organise a top class inter school tournament at his ground.

Not sure what level of cricket is played now though.

Cricket is still the sport played most in schools during breaks and after school, It's just not organized very well.

It was pretty well organised back in the 90s. We had nets every weekend at 8am. Mainly because our coach Mr Cosmos liked having a drink in the afternoon and then a nap.

4 new balls per net session.

Did you studied in St. Patrick's High School? They are the best when it comes to sports. I also studied from St. Pat's.

I remember Mr. Cosmos. He retired when I was in my 8th after our inter class tournament of class 8. We won the tournament :). Didn't lost a single match :D

The school cricket nowadays with the hard ball is next to none. 90% of the schools in Karachi do not focus on sports.

I asked about this 6 years ago. Is it completely finished now? Thinking about organized school cricket.

Sri Lanka crushed Pakistan in T20s and their coach said that organized school cricket in SL is very good. In that way they will keep getting talents and you clearly saw that against Pakistan.

This just has to resume in Pakistan as well.

No wonder despite being such a small country with population less than that of Nepal, sri lanka keeps on producing world class talent.

I had an Australian friend who came with his family for a job based out of Lahore. The job opportunity was good but what turned the decision for him was the fact that his cricket-mad son (13) will get to play cricket with Pakistanis.

What followed was massive disappointment. There was hardly any cricket at school, only one main team which was of older kids, no regular games at all. Also, there are no leagues for kids in Pakistan, no organized Saturday/Sunday cricket, not many grounds etc.

His son did play a bit of street cricket like the Pakistanis but it wasn't what they had expected when they went to Pakistan.

So he packed up in a year and a half and is now based out of Johannesburg. Much more organized.

It just shows me that Pakistani players, for all their raw skills, start with tremendous disadvantage and lack of grooming.

If Australia has such a good cricketing structure, why would he come to Pakistan for this reason? Your story has lot of flaws lol

You obviously did not read his entire post. He came he for a job opportunity and it was his son who was cricket mad. Of course he must have thought since Pakistan is a cricket crazy country there must be plenty of opportunities for his son to play cricket.

"The job opportunity was good but what turned the decision for him was the fact that his cricket-mad son (13) will get to play cricket with Pakistanis." I mean either this guy is lying with his story or his friend is pretty stupid who thinks that resources and opportunities in Pakistan would be more or better than what he would get in Australia. Australia probably has the best cricketing infrastructure in the world while even Bangladesh probably has much better cricketing infrastructure than us.

New Zealand has a very small population but we have very competitive school leagues, some colleges (high schools) have around 10 teams all playing in different leagues of different levels. The highest league is the premier first XI grade, then 1st XI A, and many more for different age groups, juniors have COlts and junior grades, seniors have 1st, 2nd, 3rd .... XIs. Barely anyone plays club cricket during high school days as School cricket is the most competitive.

School cricket makes a huge difference, it also invites new players when they have to choose an extra curricular activity for school.
