Gunmen have attacked the office of the Karachi police chief located on main Sharea Faisal, with firing ongoing.

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has taken notice of the situation and directed the relevant DIGs to send personnel from their zones.

“I want the perpetrators behind the attack on the additional IG’s office to be arrested,” he said, adding that an attack on the police chief’s office was “not acceptable” at any cost.

The chief minister also sought a report from the officer concerned and said that he was personally monitoring the situation.

Meanwhile, in a statement, the Saddar police station said that it had come under attack. “SHO,PI Khalid Hussain Memon informed that unknown accused [attacked] Saddar police station near KPO. Firing is going on everywhere,” the statement said.

Separately, police surgeon Dr Summaiya Syed told Dawn.com that one injured worker from the Edhi Foundation had been brought to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) for treatment.

When you create chaos with violence to suppress the poor, surely others will also use similar tactics.

Gunmen barged into a police office on Karachi’s main Sharea Faisal highway on Friday evening, with loud sounds of gunfire and explosions echoing though the surrounding area.

Police sealed off traffic on the main road through the city and heavy contingents of security forces, including paramilitary soldiers, had arrived at the scene. An operation was launched to clear the Karachi Police Office (KPO) of the terrorists.

DIG South Irfan Baloch said that at least six terrorists managed to enter the Karachi Police Chief’s office through rear entrance. He said that top police officers were present in the building.

“A heavy contingent of police and rangers has arrived. We are trying to arrest terrorists dead or alive," he said.

Security officials said terrorists started firing indiscriminately as soon as they barged into the office. Loud explosions were heard several minutes later, with one powerful explosion on the fourth floor shattering glass windows and damaging parts of the building.

DIG South Irfan Baloch said the powerful explosion took place when an apparent suicide bomber detonated his explosives on the fourth floor.

The bomb disposal squad has been called in, he added.

The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) took responsibility for the attack in a message sent by their spokesman to journalists, according to Reuters.

In an update, Adviser to the Sindh Chief Minister Murtaza Wahab said the KPO is a five-storey building with three floors have been cleared of terrorists so far by the law enforcement agencies (LEAs) including police, army and Rangers.

“Army snipers are also present to deal with the terrorists at the rooftop,” he said adding that the LEAs have also reached the rooftop of the KPO building.

Sindh Rangers spokesperson said in a statement that Rangers Quick Response Force (QRF) reached the scene and cordoned off the area upon receiving the information about the attack on KPO.

Rangers started an operation against the terrorists along with the Sindh police.

Initially, the operation was launched on the information of the presence of 8 to 10 armed terrorists inside the KPO building, the spokesperson added.

In a statement, DIG East Muqaddas Haider said he was inside the building along with the police commandos.

First floor has been cleared of terrorists while forces are facing resistance from militants present on the roof, he added. He said terrorists are armed with modern weapons.

However, police sources said four terrorists present on the roof of the building are wearing suicide jackets.

SSP South Asad Raza said snipers have been deployed on the building in front of the KPO to target the terrorists from there.

Sindh IGP Ghulam Nabi Memon said in statement that at least two terrorists have been killed and some others injured.

"We are trying to complete the operation as soon as possible," he added.

At least four injured including two Rangers personnel, one policeman and an Edhi rescue official have been brought to Jinnah Hospital, according to rescue officials.

Meanwhile, security sources have disclosed that the number of terrorists who attacked the Karachi Police Office (KPO) is eight.

“Four attackers are present on the roof of the building while four are on the floors,” security sources added.

They added that as many as four injured and two dead bodies have been shifted to Jinnah Hospital so far.

Police in a statement said the third floor of KPO has been cleared of the terrorists while operation is underway to eliminate terrorists from fourth floor and the roof of the police office.

Police officials said following the attack, the police personnel retaliated immediately and personnel from other police stations and police commandos have also been summoned to deal with the emergency situation.

Additional IG Javed Alam Odhu has confirmed the attack on the police office, saying that the security personnel are fighting the terrorists while a heavy contingent of Rangers has also reached the spot.

SSU commandos and Rangers officials have entered the police office and the electricity of the office has been suspended.

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has taken notice of the attack and directed district inspector generals (DIGs) to send necessary police force from their respective zones to the scene.

In a statement, he directed the officials to immediately arrest the culprits.

“The attack on the Karachi Police Chief's office is not acceptable in any case. I want a report of the incident from the officer concerned,” he was quoted as saying in the statement.

CM Murad also reached the scene and monitoring the operation from the control room.

The state-run PTV news reported that Pakistan Rangers and elite police force have cordoned off the area near AIG Office Karachi and a counter terrorist operation has been launched against the terrorists.

“According to incoming reports hand grenades and automatic guns were used by no less than eight terrorists,” it added.

Speaking to the media, Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon condemned the attack, saying that terrorists have tried to challenge the provincial government's writ.

CM Murad is personally monitoring the operation against terrorists and police and Rangers will not let the terrorists to achieve their sinister objectives, he added.

He also denied that the provincial government had received any terror alert regarding any attack.

Foreign Minister and PPP chief Bilawal Bhutto Zardari condemned the terrorist attack on Karachi police.

“Sindh police have bravely faced and crushed terrorism before. We have full faith they will do so again… such cowardly attacks will not deter us,” he wrote on his official Twitter handle.

Sindh government spokesperson Murtaza Wahab said at least two people including one policeman and one civilian have been martyred in the attack.

“So far I can confirm that we have 1 policeman & 1 civilian who have embraced martyrdom. While 3 rangers personnel, 2 policemen & 1 policeman are injured so far,” he wrote on his official Twitter handle.

This is very concerning. Is there a possibility that TTP can be a significant force in a few years? If so, India will be in big trouble as well.

Speaking to Geo News separately, he reiterated that the building had been secured. He said that the bomb disposal squad was checking if the jackets worn by the terrorists were rigged to detonate.

A spokesperson for the Sindh Rangers added the operation had been completed and the process of clearing the area was under way.

DIG East Muqaddas Haider, who was among the senior officers leading the operation, told Dawn.com, that there were a total of three attackers who arrived at the KPO in a Toyota Corolla.

Haider said that one of the attackers blew himself up on the building’s fourth floor while two others were shot dead on the roof.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the Karachi police said that all three terrorists who attacked the KPO had been killed in the operation. The spokesperson said that this was a “major operation” in which senior police officials, including the South and East DIGs, had participated alongside the Rangers and the army.

“With grace of Almighty Allah, the KPO and surrounding areas have been cleared of the terrorists completely and further information will be shared with the media soon,” the police statement said.

Reports of firing on Sharea Faisal — Karachi’s main thoroughfare with a number of strategic installations, including the Pakistan Airforce’s Faisal Base — emerged around 7:15pm. Extra police contingents and Rangers were called to the site of the attack.

Speaking to Geo News, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah said that the attack took place around 7:10pm. He said that the city police chief was not currently in Karachi.

Sharea Faisal had been closed for traffic during the operation with the Sindh government spokesperson requesting citizens to stay put where they were.

The Saddar police station, located next to the police chief’s office, had also issued a statement saying it had come under attack. “SHO, PI Khalid Hussain Memon said that unknown accused [attacked] Saddar police station near Karachi Police Office. Firing is going on everywhere,” the initial statement had said.

South DIG Irfan Baloch earlier told DawnNewsTV said that “spectacular” firing was ongoing but said that the situation would be brought under control. He had, however, refused to comment on the number of people injured, saying that it could only be confirmed once officials would sweep the area.

This image shows where the attack took place.
He said that the entire city’s police force had been called to the scene, in addition to the Rangers and the Quick Response Force (QRF). He further said that the attackers had also lobbed hand grenades. He said that the attackers had come “fully prepared” and were putting up a “tough fight”.

Overseas cricket players are currently competing in the Pakistan Super League, and Karachi is one of the host cities. There is a game scheduled for Saturday (tomorrow).

Casualties
The Sindh government spokesperson said according to the latest information available, four people had been martyred. The deceased included two policemen, one Rangers official and one civilian.

He added that 14 people had been injured and were being given medical treatment. “Out of the injured, one person is critical while the condition of 13 injured persons is stable,” Wahab said.

Police surgeon, Dr Summaiya Syed said that the bodies of a police constable and a civilian were brought to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC).

Dr Syed added that 12 wounded people, including five police and six Rangers personnel were also brought in with gunshot injuries. One of the wounded is an Edhi worker. The wounded also include police and Rangers personnel.

TTP claims responsibility
The outlawed Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed the attack in a statement issued by its spokesperson Mohammad Khurasani. In 2011, TTP had claimed the attack on PNS Mehran — one of the most densely populated naval bases located in Karachi.

The attack and operation lasted for 17 hours and resulted in the deaths of 10 security personnel. Two US-manufactured surveillance planes were also destroyed during the attack and the ensuing operation.

Three years later, on the night of June 8, 2014, TTP had attacked the Jinnah International Airport of Karachi in which 24 lives were lost and property damaged. The assault on this key installation had far reaching consequences in terms of security at airports and also culminated in the launch of operation Zarb-e-Azb on 15th June, 2014.

The storming of the Karachi police chief’s office comes on the heels of attacks in KP and areas bordering Afghanistan. Since the talks with the TTP broke down in November last year, the militant group has intensified its attacks while insurgents in Balochistan have also stepped up their violent activities and formalised a nexus with the outlawed TTP.

Speaking on today’s attack, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah told Geo News that the government was under the impression that the terrorists did not have access beyond KP and Balochistan. “But now we can see they can reach other cities,” he said.

Sindh govt springs into action
Immediately after reports had surfaced about the attack, the Sindh CM had taken notice of the situation and directed the relevant DIGs to send personnel from their zones. “I want the perpetrators behind the attack on the additional IG’s office to be arrested,” he said, adding that an attack on the police chief’s office was “not acceptable” at any cost.

The chief minister also sought a report from the officer concerned and said that he was personally monitoring the situation. He also directed Rangers to arrive at the scene.

Speaking to Geo News, Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Memon vowed to teach the “terrorists” a lesson, adding that “there was no way the terrorists would be able to flee”.

Condemnations
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif took notice and sought a report on the incident. He appreciated the police and security forces for their effective action against the terrorists.

He instructed the interior minister to extend the federal government’s full cooperation in the clean-up operation. He underlined the need for collective action to root out the menace of terrorism.

He added that terrorists had once again targeted Karachi but said that these kind of cowardly acts would not weaken the resolve of law enforcement agencies.

President Dr Arif Alvi also strongly condemned the attack and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured persons.

“The entire nation stands with its security forces against terrorists,” he said. “Efforts will continue to eradicate the scourge of terrorism.”

Live and let live. Such a simple thing to follow for world peace. Yet so difficult for some to follow.

What is motivating these people to blow themselves up?

It can’t be religious conflict because they are clearly attacking Muslims in this case. Pakistanis would be the last people you would expect to do something unislamic and offend religious people.

Money can be thrown around to kill person or cause chaos but you can’t motivate someone to blow themselves up. It comes from a strong internal emotion.

I mean even animals have their first instinct to survive and live at any cost so you can’t tell me these people are so illiterate that they can be brainwashed into doing this for no reason.

Can someone explain what exactly these terrorists want?

They are brainwashed with a narrative that Pak Army,Police and security forces killed their families in Wazirabad Afghanistan and border areas, so its a revenge type attacks, its in their culture "Badla"
They are brainwashed breed and unstoppable, special snipers needed to handle them when this kind of creature roam towards something suspiously, they have sucide bom jackets on them.

One of the main tactics of the invaders in the The WAR OF terror was to hire top ranking militants who inspired/brainwashed young , poor , hungry and confused kids to join them in a war against the invaders, when in reality they were doing their bidding. The TTP and other terrorists do the bidding of nations such US, India and others. These tactics have been proven now after the Syria war where Al-Q and ISIS were openly supported by the West but now also allowed by some elements of the Pak army. Pakistan also has wrote a report years ago with evidence.

THink about it , if these were fighting for religion or their people they would be attacking Israel or Occupied Kashmir but they are not.

Karachi will continue to see violence until thieves, crooks and terrorists are no longer in government or army.

I think I got a couple of perspectives above but you missed my question. Let’s assume India and US are paying them money or giving them weapons, it is still a real guy/ woman blowing himself/ herself up. Hired mercenaries don’t kill themselves. These people are either driven by religion or revenge. People just don’t do suicide bombing for money.

TTP claims responsibility
The outlawed Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed the attack in a statement issued by its spokesperson Mohammad Khurasani

Taking great exception to the current state of security arrangements at government buildings and installations following an attack on heavily-guarded Karachi Police Office (KPO) in the heart of the provincial metropolis, the security administration and provincial government decided to carry out a ‘security audit’ of these facilities while seeing the assault on the law enforcement agency’s headquarters as a serious security lapse.

Officials agreed that the attack on the KPO had raised several questions and for their answers a ‘proper exercise’ would be needed that included the ‘security audit’ and the plan of action the law enforcement agency was having after the terrorist attacks mainly on police across Pakistan had put the security establishment on toes in other parts of the country.

“That seems so [a serious security lapse],” said a senior member of the provincial administration when asked whether he agreed with the view that the attack on KPO was a serious security lapse.

This image shows where the attack took place.
“No doubt that it’s our police which is fighting and bearing the major brunt, but there is a need to revisit as to how secure our security offices and buildings are,” he said, asking not to be named.

He said that the recent Peshawar attack was a wake-up call for law enforcement agencies across the country and against this backdrop it was a matter of grave concern as to how militants had succeeded in sneaking into the police headquarters. “It’s alarming.”

Ex-CPLC chief terms assault serious security lapse which can’t be ignored

However, he was confident that the Karachi police and the security administration along with the Sindh government would address all loopholes and fix the issues to take up the challenge.

Like past, he said, the morale of the police was up and ready to take the challenge as in urban areas it was mainly the law enforcement agency which fought against militants and made huge sacrifices to restore peace.

‘A symbolic attack’

Those who have worked closely with security agencies and the provincial administration see the attack on KPO as a symbolic one and a kind of message from militants to the authorities about their preparations and next targets.

“KPO is not a soft target,” said Sharufddin Memon, former chief of the Citizen-Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) and consultant to the Sindh home department.

“This is a kind of message from the terrorists: ‘we are that close’. It’s a serious security lapse. It’s not a routine terrorist activity. It cannot be ignored. So, I think many things are needed to be revisited. From the security of our facilities to anti-terror to training of our law enforcement agencies — everything must be rechecked,” he said.

He recalled the past wave of terrorism in the country when militant outfits often went for soft targets attacking public places, markets, mosques, shrines and imambargahs but the fresh one had started with a visible shift in their line of action, so far.

“They [the militants] are showing how prepared and trained they are. If they can attack these facilities then how vulnerable our public places can be? So it’s time to devise a proper security plan and take up the challenge with full confidence,” said Mr Memon.

The hours-long combat between terrorists and law-enforcement agencies on Friday at the Karachi Police Office located at Sharea Faisal left four people martyred and 19 injured. In contrast, all three terrorists belonging to the banned militant group Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan were killed.

An order issued from the office of Sindh Inspector General of Police Ghulam Nabi Memon, available with Dawn.com, was issued today regarding the investigation committee’s composition.

The committee included Sindh Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIGP) Zulfiqar Ali Larik as its chairman while the other members included Karachi South Zone DIGP Irfan Ali Baloch, Crime Investigation Agency DIGP Muhammad Karim Khan, Karachi CTD Operations Senior Superintendent of Police Tariq Nawaz and Karachi CTD Investigation Incharge Raja Umer Khitab.

The order said that the chairman could co-opt any other member required for conducting the investigation.

Funeral prayers offered

Funeral prayers for the policemen martyred in the attack were offered at Karachi’s Central Police Office (CPO).

Apart from policemen Ghulam Abbas and Saeed, the funeral prayers of Amjad Masih were also performed at the CPO.

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, Sindh Chief Secretary Sohail Rajput, Karachi Corps Commander Karachi Lieutenant General Babar Iftikhar, IGP Memon, provincial minister Saeed Ghani, Karachi Additional IGP Javed Alam Odho, other senior police officers, employees posted at CPO and relatives of martyrs attended the funerals.

IGP Memon expressed his sympathy and condolence to the heirs of the martyrs and paid tribute to the martyrs and their departmental services.

He gave instructions to the senior police officers present on the spot that all the legal and documentary matters regarding the prevailing benefits for the legal heirs of the martyrs should be completed as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, the Sindh chief minister lauded the police officials involved in thwarting the attack.

He said policemen, Rangers and the Pakistan Army fought bravely with the terrorists and killed them. “Their sacrifice will be remembered in history,” CM Shah said.

He added that Masih also laid his life and proved that there was “no need for any designation or responsibility to fight against the enemy but every citizen and official needs to fight in his personal capacity against the enemies of the state and our people.”

Separately, President Dr Arif Alvi paid a visit to the injured security personnel at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre to enquire about their health.

On the occasion, the president lauded the valour and bravery of the officers and personnel

He also paid tribute to the sacrifices of the forces and commended them for fighting with bravery. The president prayed for the early recovery of the injured.

Sindh Police Inspector General (IG) Ghulam Memon constituted a five-member committee on Saturday to probe the attack on the Karachi Police Office (KPO) on Friday evening, Express News reported.

The committee—headed by DIG CTD Zulfiqar Larak—comprises of DIG South, DIG CIA, SSP Tariq Nawaz and In-Charge CTD Umar Khattab.

The committee has been tasked with identifying the handlers and facilitators of the terrorists.

Meanwhile, Additional IG Karachi Javed Alam Odhu presided over a meeting regarding the terrorist incidents during which officers of the law enforcement agencies were also present.

The participants of the meeting were informed that weapons, grenades and suicide jackets were recovered from the possession of the terrorists.

In the meeting, the footage from the CCTV cameras installed in the KPO was also reviewed.

'Additional IG was the target'

DIG South Irfan Baloch has claimed that the terrorists were targeting the Karachi Additional IG, noting that they had known which floor his office was on.

The death toll of the audacious attack on the Karachi Police Office (KPO) rose to five on Sunday while a first information report (FIR) was registered under terrorism charges against the perpetrators and their facilitators.

The hours-long combat between terrorists and law-enforcement agencies — comprising Pak Army Special Service Group (SSG), Pakistan Rangers Sindh and Sindh Police — on Friday at the KPO located at Sharea Faisal left four people martyred and 18 injured. All three terrorists belonging to the banned militant group Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) were killed.

KARACHI: While a case has been registered against the outlawed Tehreek-i-Taliban ******tan for Friday’s attack on Karachi Police Office (KPO), police and other allied agencies appear to be clueless about the mastermind and facilitators of the three militants who barged into the police compound and engaged law-enforcers in a fierce gun battle for hours, it emerged on Sunday.

Also, death toll rises to five as one of the wounded policemen, identified as Abdul Latif, 50, died during treatment at a hospital on Sunday.

Two policemen, one Rangers official and a sanitation worker were martyred and 17 others, mostly law-enforcers, wounded in the Feb 17 attack. After hours-long gun battle, two militants were gunned down while the third one blew himself up on the fourth floor of the building.
