Kamran Akmal, the former Pakistan wicketkeeper-batsman sought answers from the selectors over his non-selection in the national team despite scoring heavily in domestic cricket in the last two years.

Kamran, 35, has been a top run-getter in all three formats, with 1,035 runs in nine Quaid-e-Azam Trophy matches in first-class cricket, backed up by 361 runs in eight National one-day cup matches. He also scored 260 runs in eight Twenty20 matches last year.

He compiled a match-winning 88 against Islamabad United in Peshawar Zalmi’s opening match in the second edition of the Pakistan Super League, and scored another match-winning 58 against Lahore Qalandars on Friday (February 24).

After the innings, he was asked why the selectors were not recalling him to the Pakistan team. “I don’t know. The best answer can come from selectors,” said Kamran. “I think I have not done anything. Thanks Almighty I have done so much so they are the ones who should answer. A batsman can only score runs and that I have done.”

Inzamam-ul-Haq, the chief selectors, admitted last year that Kamran’s name came up for consideration. However, the Pakistan team management reportedly rejected his candidature for the one-day series against Australia last year and demanded Mohamad Hafeez’s inclusion instead.

Kamran demanded clarification over his non-selection.

“They also should tell the reason for not considering me,” he said. “It’s not just me but for all those who are playing and performing in domestic cricket. The only reason for not considering any player should be the fitness and performance. But I am doing everything to make a point for my selection,” said Kamran, whose last appearance for Pakistan was in the World Twenty20 2014.

He has played 53 Tests, 154 ODIs and 54 T20Is for Pakistan.

“In every team three wicketkeepers are playing, some are even playing as batsmen. I have performed with the bat and it’s not that I am just making my case only as wicketkeeper-batsman.

“I am trying to make comeback, that’s why I am playing cricket. It’s my passion to play for Pakistan and whatever it is, for four or five years of cricket left in me, I want to play it on top for me and for my country.”

Kamran said he did meet Subhan Ahmed, the Pakistan Cricket Board chief operating officer, but was given no clear answers.

“I have been in talks with everyone during the domestic season and neither of anyone hinted against my selection. But they all were optimistic for me to make a comeback. They didn’t give me any reason for me not be taken back in the side, in fact they were pushing me to play hard and the selectors will definitely pick me up whenever they want.

“See it’s my objective to score runs and help the team and contribute in the success of the team. Like today, I have scored and helped my team and that’s the only thing I am focusing on because this is eventually going to help me get back into the Pakistan squad. Everything is in front of you, what else can I do?”

Kamran said he could match Younis Khan in his reaction to non-selection. On not getting selected in ODIs despite his good form in Tests in 2014, Younis had hit back at selectors, saying “should players like him shoot themselves”.

“The only thing left is to speak and like Younis bhai had done, so I have to say thing like him (to get attention). I mean I have done everything to make a point for my comeback, but let see how things go as the team (for Pakistan’s next series, a tour of the West Indies) hasn’t been announced yet.

“It’s disappointing as I am struggling (at not getting a chance to make a comeback) for the last three years. I have been doing all the hard work, scoring runs, there is no issue with my fitness. This is exactly what I have to do and I am doing well with it to stay relevant. The rest, the selectors and team management are in a better situation to speak about.

“It’s a challenge to remain focused all the way when you are not selected. I have done a lot of hard work and I can’t give up. I keep on pushing myself. I have an example of Misbah-ul-Haq – had he gien up he couldn’t have become the No. 1 captain. He made his comeback, led the team to No.1 and won a lot of matches for Pakistan. So until I am fit and performing he shouldn’t give up.”

Kamran said his family has been the motivating factor in these difficult times.

“My family motivated, my fans and my domestic teams all stood for me all the way. These are the things that encourage you and help you make a comeback. My passion is still alive and players like me need support and confidence.”

I'll take him over shehzad and Azhar but ideally this guy shouldn't be in the team and his brother should be opening

Your Afridi-esque average, now almost down to the same as him. Your age, which is probably higher than the official 35. Your constant failures and choking. Take your pick, Kamran.

Its too late Kami, we can't keep dragging out the careers of 35+ year olds.

Arthur wants to build a squad for the 2019 WC and I don't see Kami making that.

You never know, the way our selections work Kami may very well be on that flight to the Caribbean. Which obviously would be very bad for Pakistan cricket.

So, who's going to be our openers who can hit the ball and give us quick starts at the top?

I'm guessing you'd resort to Ahmed Shehzad and Azhar Ali?

Sharjeel and Latif are gone! Give me valid options that are there - not some imaginary youngsta beauty names please.

Why didn't he say this after continuously flopping the last 4 games?

Threatening to do what YK did?

Please continue to keep him out Inzi. He's 35 for crying out loud.

Well as per the article he was considered so he can't say he was not considered. Considered and right fully not included in the final decision. I would still not mind him being our T20 opener, but we have many knocking on the door at the moment. Ahmed Shehzad has been brilliant last 2 games, Fakhar Zaman has shown glimpses that he can perhaps be a replacement for Sharjeel Khan and today Hussain Talat performed brilliantly. Selectors have a tough job and players really should not criticize them.

LOved the Younis Khan Part.

Liked his honesty there

YK has taught the boys at Zalmi well in his new role as mentor. They're pulling out all his tricks :yk

Maybe its something to do with the fact that you are 35.

When you were at your prime you averaged 26 in ODI.

What makes u think you will average more on the wrong side of 35?

But you have a chance.

Memory lapses are very conspicuous in Pakistani fans.

They will try to force your selection again.

And when you fail again, they will be the first to ridicule you once more.

Oh come on,

forget about replacing Sarfi...

this man can't even bat better than Rizwan (to my surprise)

If they do something good for a change we should not question them Kami bhai.

Hilarious dig at saint. :yk3

we let younis blackmail himself into a World Cup, that day i said it was the biggest mistake Pak had made since 2010 fixing. Now every tom dick and harry will try to blackmail.

Likely Kamran isnt in a great position to do much other than beg, but in the future people will threaten to shoot themselves or quit a strong format like Team Man did

100 for Kamran - think he has a point!

Lucky man. You won't served all these juicy full tosses by kids like Usama Mir or Usman Shinwari, or has beens like Ravi Bopara in international cricket.

What you're saying doesn't make any sense. Think with a cool, neutral mind. Not as someone who doesn't like Kami.

Do you seriously think if whatever you're describing (which isn't true) was bowled to Sarfraz, Malik, Rizwan, Shafiq and Saad Nasim, they'd be able to strike the ball as good as Kami did?

Score a 100? Or let alone score a 50!

No. So, you get your answer.

Congrats Kamran. Sealed it with this innings. They won't drop him after a superb 100 in a semi-final.

With Sharjeel banned, they'll probably revamp totally and have Shehzad and Kamran open now.

Which is sad. Kami should be partnered with Shahzaib.

Shehzad is going to hurt us a lot. A LOT.

250 runs in 3 innings

63 in the other 7

Instead of repeating the same thing in every thread, why don't you tell us what other Pak batsmen did? He's still the best Pak batsman of the tournament.

Not really a good try.

No. So, you get your answer.

Why do you keep presenting these false choices ? I've said many times I don't want Shafiq, Rizwan or Malik in the team.

But its not as Kamran's international record is any better than those names you mention. Just to remind you - Kamran averaged 16 and 14 in his last stints in ODIs and T20Is.

He is incapable of scoring consistently against decent international attacks and you know it. If he couldn't do it at his prime, what makes you think he will at 35 years old ? He's not as fit as a Younis or a Misbah. Tonight he was getting tired towards the end of his innings, and this is only a T20 !

Let's build for the 2019 WC and invest in younger faces like Shahzaib Hasan, Hussain Talat, Khushdil Shah and others in domestic cricket. Let's not go back to has beens - or in Kamran's case a never-was.

Kamran's been way to inconsistent this tournament but looks like he is coming back. Apart from this innings, his innings in the opener and one other decent store he has been getting out cheaply. Don't expect him to do well in West Indies assuming he gets picked

I would give Fakhar Zaman 5 chances before I give Kamran Akmal 3.

Reason is he drops to many catches for a wicket keeper then laughs and smirks about it on camera that I am sure he won't be doing anymore. I just don't trust him behind the stumps after giving him so many chances. I recall he also rejected the opportunity for further coaching probably because he won't understand a word of English being said to him. Never should he wear the sabz-hilaali again!

Oh dear! Now Kam will be practising how to drop catches and nick it to first slip. His bro Adnan is much better albeit not that great with the bat. These Akmal brothers think they are bigger then the country and team, they need to be taught some very harsh lessons.

After Sharjeel Shehzad and Kamran Akmal are probably the next best limited overs openers.

Not sure how Shehzad will do better now, but he has shown that alongside Kami he is one of the better ones in our system.

Unless Inzi considers Fakhar Zaman, Shezzy and Kami could be the next limited overs openers.

Actually that's fine. I'm totally OK with a guy who will win me 3 matches out of 10 and fail quickly in the others. Rest of my order should win me enough.

Same goes for U. Akmal.

These guys have a succes rate of 40%. The problem is the fans. They expect too much from these inconsistent guys.
