SRINAGAR: In a rare case, separatist leaders in Kashmir have hit out at Pakistan and described any attempt by the country to declare Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) as its 5th province as “unacceptable” and asserted that it is part of Jammu and Kashmir.

“Any proposal to declare Giglit Baltistan as fifth state of Pakistan is unacceptable,” the three senior Kashmiri separatist leaders Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Mohammad Yasin Malik said in a joint statement issued here today.

Kashmir, Ladakh, Jammu, Pakistan administered Kashmir (Pak) and Giglit Baltistan is a single entity and part of Jammu and Kashmir, they said.

Declaring Pakistan as a prime party to the Kashmir issue, the three leaders said people in J&K have always regarded and accepted the role of Pakistan as a party to the issue, however, any step which may hamper the disputed status of Kashmir is unacceptable.

Any deviation in Pakistan’s stance about Kashmir and its geographical entity is improper and will prove detrimental for Kashmir cause, they said.

The leaders expressed their serious concern over proposal by Pakistan to declare Giglit Baltistan as fifth province of the country. “It will have damaging impact over the disputed status of state.”

“Unless and until people of J&K are provided an opportunity to decide the future course of state through referendum, no division, alteration and changes are acceptable,” they said.

Rejecting any idea of merging of its part or division of state, the leaders said both India and Pakistan have no authority or right to alter the geographical status of state.

They advised Pakistan to show wisdom and desist from such steps, which may hamper the political and geographical position of Jammu and Kashmir.

“We hope Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif will fulfil commitment regarding the geographical entity of J&K and desist from the adventure of annexing Giglit Baltistan as fifth state of Pakistan,” the leader said.

Pakistan’s minister for inter-provincial coordination Riaz Hussain Pirzada had told Pakistan TV news channel (Geo TV) that that a committee headed by Advisor of Foreign Affairs to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Sartaj Aziz has proposed giving the status of a province to Gilgit-Baltistan.

Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab and Sindh are four provinces of Pakistan.

The chief commander of dominant militant group Hizbul Mujahideen, Syed Salah-ud-Din has also opposed Pakistan move to declare Gilgit Baltistan as a province.

“Pakistan should not declare Gilgit-Baltistan as fifth province of the country as it would impact the Kashmir dispute at the United Nations and give India a legal and moral pretext to lay claim on Kashmir,” he said.

The Hizb chief said Instead of granting Gilgat Baltistan a province status, the problems of its people should be addressed on priority basis and corruption free administration provided to the people of the region.

New Delhi has also strongly reacted to the Pakistan move to declare Gilgit Baltistan as country’s 5th province.

External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Gopal Baglay had yesterday said any such step would not be able to hide the illegality of Pakistan's occupation of parts of Jammu and Kashmir which it must vacate, forthwith.

Since when did it matter what these Muppet's think? Let it be "unacceptable" to you, Pak doesn't care.

I think you dont understand why they have objected to it.

If Pakistan does it, why do you think India wont do it too? There will be absolutely no international pressure on India to merge Occupied J&K with it and Pakistan wont have any moral ground to oppose it and say J&K is disputed. All the blood Kashmiris have given for their cause would be put in jeopardy.

Best is to resolve the issue and then decide what to do.

G-B governor calls for separate province as demand for new provinces grows

The demands for new provinces are gaining momentum nationwide, with Gilgit-Baltistan Governor Mehdi Shah calling for separate provincial status and warning of protests similar to those in Azad Jammu and Kashmir if rights continue to be denied.

Speaking to the media at Jati Umra in Lahore on Sunday, the governor said that while Gilgit-Baltistan’s (G-B) resources were being utilised, the benefits were flowing to the rest of the country rather than the region itself.

“Our resources are being used, but G-B is being denied its due rights. If this continues, a protest movement like that of Azad Kashmir may emerge here as well,” he warned.

Mehdi Shah expressed disappointment with the coalition government at the centre, comprising the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), saying G-B had gained little despite being part of the ruling alliance.

He recalled that Federal Minister Ahsan Iqbal had visited the region and stated that generating 200 megawatts of electricity was not an issue, but no practical steps were taken. Mehdi said that while every province demands its full share of resources, G-B would only receive its rightful share once it was granted full provincial status.

Referring to regional developments, the governor said that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had taken control of disputed areas in Kashmir without resistance. He added that had former prime minister Imran Khan and those who brought him to power taken better decisions and secured control over their own areas at the time, the situation might have been different.

He said that despite sharing the same land and mountains as other regions, G-B was being deprived of basic facilities due to its disputed status. “The water being used for electricity generation comes from our region, yet our needs are ignored,” he said.

Highlighting demands raised during the 27th constitutional amendment, he said G-B had sought two key measures: increasing representation in the assembly from 24 to 30 seats, and provision of electricity. Addressing Ahsan Iqbal, he said that even if 200 megawatts could not be provided, at least 50 megawatts should be delivered as promised.

The governor said the people of G-B had joined Pakistan by their own free will, unlike other provinces. He added that political leaders make promises during elections, noting that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had pledged to provide 100 megawatts of electricity to the region, expressing hope that the commitment would be fulfilled.

Expressing dissatisfaction with the ruling coalition, Mehdi Shah said that being an ally of the PML-N had not proven beneficial for G-B. He added that he had also raised this concern during a meeting of the party’s central executive committee.

Pakistanis have been waiting for almost 80 years now. Seems like issue will never be resolved because India seems to have no interest in resolving the issue.
