Several people have been killed and a number of others injured after a car drove into pedestrians in the German city of Trier, police say.
At least two people have died and 15 others were injured in the collision, which happened in a pedestrianised area of the city centre on Tuesday, Trier Mayor Wolfram Leibe said.
The 51-year-old driver, who is from the Trier-Saarburg district, has been arrested and the vehicle seized, police added.
A force spokesman said on Twitter that "several" people were killed in the incident.
Police officers and the mayor are currently at the scene and two helicopters are circling overhead, reported Trierischer Volksfreund.
An eyewitness told the newspaper that the vehicle drove from the city's famous Roman gate - the Porta Nigra - towards the main market and then onto Fleischstrasse, where it hit several pedestrians.
Another claimed they saw a pram fly through the air at the market and passers-by flooded into her shop as they tried to escape, reports Trierischer Volksfreund.
Trier is around 120 miles west of Frankfurt, on the German border with Luxembourg.
It is four years since a terrorist drove a truck through a Christmas market in Berlin, killing 12 shoppers.
