Shaheen Shah Afridi - First impressions

He should have been selected for ODIs. This is the worst squad selected by Inzimam in his tenure.

It wouldn't be his debut as he played in Pakistan against WI.

Okay but The Grange isn't a ground to groom young pacers. Even mishits could go for six there.

On those dry Zimbabwean surfaces, he'll be needed more.

Only redeeming part of the game so far. Shaheen looked like he belonged at this level. Miles better than UKS and edging out Swag Ali as well.

You wouldn't think he was a debutant. Bowled with such maturity and offered something different on these dead wickets.

He is good, and kudos to Pakistan for trying him out so early. Compare this to India where we are choosing some trundling TTFs as backup over Nagarkotti and Mavi.

Really surprised. Man's improving fast. He might have earnt his place leading up the world cup now.

I think Mavi and Nagarkoti are quick but maybe not tell enough and inexperienced. They should at least be playing on A tours before senior team as your quicks are awesome right now

Looked threatening and motivated , should be Played against ind like Pakistani culture “throwing the challenge to young man”. Now a days Amir look only motivated playing against Kohli and we cannot have kohli in every match in our opposite team

To be honest I was expecting him to swing/seam the new ball or atleast hit 145kph but was thoroughly disappointed, however the maturity he'd shown is beyond comprehension, looked like he was playing his 50th Odi, hopefully the swing and pace will be coming back against India under lights.

He is absolutely dreadful at fielding.

He dropped some sitters in the PSL as well.

Bowling is good but he'll cost us in the field.

Was very impressive today. If we want him to get better, we need to keep playing him. Its as simple as that. No player becomes better sitting on the bench every crucial match. "whatever doesnt kill you, makes you stronger"

He was bowling into the wind.

He seems to be quite the talent. With that being said he must improve his fielding.

Very impressed, needs to be played in every single game before the World Cup, he is the future of our fast bowling. If we go into the world cup with a firing Hasan, Amir, Shaheen, and Shadab, our lineup will be unstoppable.

He really needs to improve his fielding though. Not saying he needs to be a livewire like Shadab, but he should at least be able to hold onto catches, collect cleanly in the outfield, and get good throws in.

He was impressive.

Hopefully he stays injury free, improves his fielding, and keeps bowling fast.

He may be spear heading Pakistan's bowling attack in 5 years time.

I think usman and afridi will be spearheading our attack from now on. Amir and hassan are way way below par at the moment. They are failing to make an impact. I would put my money on these two against india. They are fighters and particularly usman the way he was bowling today. I am really impressed....

Shanwari never brings the ball into the batsman. He does not have in swing, against better teams he has been found out.

Both Amir and Afridi can bring the ball in, which is major reason to go with them... Plus Afridi has height, which adds new variety to attack. Afridi and Amir can be great opening pair, followed by Shadab, Hassan and Fahim. Pretty good attack for WC. Afridi is also good with old ball.

He is not a bad athlete, need to work on his fielding, not something too hard, since fitness level is good. A must have for WC.

Were we watching the same game? Shinwari was bowling short and wide the entire game. Didn't look threatening at all apart from a couple of deliveries.

Hassan on the other hand, I thought bowled quite well apart from his last two overs. His over-attacking nature does get him into trouble towards the back end of an innings and T20 cricket (hence, his ER being on the higher side in the particular format). It is imperative to the development of Hasan the LOI bowler that he opens the innings so he's able to develop the art of bowling without protection.

Hasan was miles better than Usman last night, and probably deserved a wicket earlier on.

This.Afridi has his natural height whereas Mavi and Nagarkotti need to develop other skills to bowl on current pattas. Both are pretty young and has not done anything mighty impressive in A tours yet.Look how much Khaleel has to toil to get in the team inspite of being a tall left armer with good pace. So let them bowl well in the opportunities they get and prove themselves.

Yeah, Shinwari had one bag game, but he's had lots of great games before this. Already showed that he can do what Amir can't, which is run through a side by himself in ODIs. I do think opening with Hasan is something that needs to be tried sooner rather than later. Your best bowler should get first use of the ball, and the best bowlers now are Hasan and Shinwari.

Think Hasan bowled absolutely beautifully for most part of his quota.

I dont know for some reason i dont think hasan will be a good idea vs india. If they give him the new ball thats different. It may work better than him coming later. I dont know its a puzzle right now how to juggle the bowlers..

Don't like UKS, Afridi has so much more going for him As a fast bowler, still young and will only get better.

Amir
Afridi
Hassan

Three fast bowlers for next year's world cup.

He is the final nail in the coffin of Junaid's career.

Amir, Hasan and Shinwari should be our starting pacers with Nawaz/Imad/Gohar/Asghar and Shadab as the two other bowlers on Asian and Caribbean pitches.

On non-Asian and Caribbean pitches, a finger spinner should be dropped for Faheem. He is a poor player, but we have no other RFM options right now.

Shaheen Afridi should be in the squad to keep pressure on Amir and Shinwari and get the odd game. I am a bit worried he might be injury prone, but if he can keep himself fit, he can have a long career for Pakistan across all three formats.

EXACTLY!!! Cant believe there are people who want Usman to be dropped. This guy has been amazing so far in 2018.

It will be miracle, if Pakistan win this Asia cup without spinners.
Here spinners are choking and batsman and getting wickets. Really surprised, how come pak team management and selection committee missed this?

Any good spinner can be of great help here, be it imad, yasir, bilal asif, or any other. Fast bowlers are a big NO NO in UAE.And I am not expecting anything from the fast bowlers[hasan, amir, shaheen, junaid, ashraf, usman] unless they give miraculous performance. All are good bowlers, but here they are of no use.

The boy got it all. He has pace, skill and most of all is mentally strong as well. In his debut match, 3 catches were dropped off his bowling but he kept on going and finally got two wickets. He was the best bowler of the match and was simply unplayable for Afghani bats through most of the duration of the match. I see a bright future for the lad. Up and upwards!

Shinwari should be first choice, he cannot bring the ball into the RHB, Afridi is much better choice. Shinwari will be not so special against better teams and players of pace... Afridi has lot more to offer, he has everything even reverse as well...Pakistan should be planning to have him as starter in WC!!

He should get a run of games, I would take him to the WC. We don't have a bowler like him.

He is a kind of bowler who will do brilliantly today. Indians have it hard against left arm pacers.

Trust me we're not far away in making Shaheen another Amir as we're dropping catches and then we blame the bowlers honestly. We're not doing any justice to them by dropping catches.

Good potential. Needs to play more at this level before we can judge him.

He has all the ingredients to be a good prospect but I think there are 3 key concerns.
1) sometimes the ball isnt going swing or seam. In these situations he needs to demonstrate he can keep things tight. I think he needs more accuracy with line and length.
2) he needs a good bowling partner. Amir just doesn’t cut it anymore. All the pressure is released.
3) he needs an attacking captain. I think Sarfaraz becomes too defensive too quickly and then without attacking fielders it’s only a matter of time decent batsmen will pick runs at will.

He’s very raw but deserves his place. Just needs a few tweaks to line up and he needs to set his fields.

Shaheen Shah Afridi - I'm Very Impressed

I was one of those who said that he was being picked for internationals far too soon and probably needed another year or 2 in the domestic game (still needs time in the first class system) BUT he has been terrific in his first two ODIs. He is tall and uses his height well (doesn't fall at the crease like Irfan used to) and most importantly, he bowls well at around 137kph to 145kph. Along with that he gives it his all every ball, has shown better control on his length than Hasan, Amir and everyone else used by Pakistan in the Asia Cup.

It is just so sad that the team have repeatedly let him down, 4 catches dropped across two matches is just not good enough and a slap in the face of a young guy trying his best.

There are not many positives to be taken from the tournament so far but this kid is one.

Shaheen Afridi Five-Wicket Hall

I have a strong feeling that Shaheen Afridi will take maiden FIVE wicket haul in tomorrow’s match against Bangladesh. Let’s hope Pakistan holds on to their catches and allows this opportunity for the bowler. A supportive and intuitive captaining will make this possibility take feat. Correct field placements, edges and leading edges are vital. Correct delivery lengths and lines are vital as well. Let’s hope Sarfraz has smart advising on the field for Shaheen. This is a high possibility for Afridi to rip threw the Bengali batting line up, just like his predecessor Afridi did.

:afridi

Continues to impress although in this game (1st T20I v Australia) - not much chance to shine!

He's a thinking bowler.

Knows how to work out the batsmen. A fantastic find for Pakistan cricket.

Playing his 2nd Test and only 5th FC match yet he was the pick of the bowlers.

Impressed by his bowling intelligence.

Been rooting for him since day one and have always been confident he will deliver. He's only going to get quicker, stronger and overall a menacing proposition for the opposition batsmen.

The preceding few months in Pakistan’s international cricket calendar have been nothing short of a disaster.

The embarrassing losses in the Asia Cup in 2018, the disastrous loss in the home Test series against New Zealand and losses in series in all three formats of on the tour of South Africa have underlined one of the most disappointing recent phases of Pakistan’s cricket history.

Understandably, such results have also put enormous amounts of self-doubt in the minds of Pakistani fans and the team management, especially as they look forward to future assignments and in particular to ICC’s marquis World Cup event in the summer.

There is, however, a silver lining in the dark clouds of gloom for Pakistan. And that hope, comes in the shape of an exciting new teenage-talent by the name of Shaheen Shah Afridi.

At the age of 18, when most young men his age are still trying to find their way through life, Shaheen Shah Afridi has already played 22 international games and taken 44 wickets, whilst bowling at an impressive pace.

A rising talent as embodied by the tall pace-man from the Khyber Agency area of the Pakhtunkhwa province, Shaheen Shah Afridi first came into the limelight with his brilliant bowling performances in the ACC Under-19 Asia Cup in 2016/17 where he received lavish praise from the likes of the former India batsman and current Under-19 coach Rahul Dravid.

And so, the die was firmly cast for Shaheen as the world took notice of yet another product of the ‘pace-factory’ that has become a hallmark of Pakistan cricket. Shaheen Shah Afridi thus joins the long and illustrious list of bowlers from Pakistan who have made pace their business and whilst he does have a long way to go to attain the same status as the great Wasim Akram, the potential for his rise to become the best is there for all to see.

Given that most world-class batsmen will be in their comfort-zones when confronted with bowlers who can bowl within the 130-135KpH range, Shaheen Shah Afridi’s ability to hit speeds in excess of 145KpH would therefore constitute a huge advantage for his side on pretty much all surfaces around the world. The movement and bounce that he can extract is fast becoming a forte of this bowler and is rightfully a matter of great pride for the likes of Pakistan Head Coach Mickey Arthur and captain Sarfaraz Ahmed.

His match-winning performances on batsman friendly wickets in the UAE against Australia and New Zealand in ODI games were simple reminders of his capabilities and any doubts about what he can do on surfaces that favour bowlers were also laid to rest by his sparkling efforts in South Africa. The fact that his captain looks to the young shoulders of Afridi at times of stress to get him quick wickets is a testament to what the 18-year-old means to the Pakistan bowling attack.

Not only has the emergence of Shaheen Shah Afridi as a good choice for Pakistan’s bowling line-up given another option for the selectors, but it also places positive pressure on some of the other bowlers in the side to improve their performances as they feel some stress to maintain their positions in the line-up.

With little doubts about his potential to succeed in the future, it is indeed heartening to see that the Pakistan think-tank now considers Shaheen Shah Afridi as a definite-pick for the side’s limited-overs squads. Under the guidance of the side’s bowling coach, Azhar Mahmood, the young fast-bowler is sure to get further opportunities to improve himself and to become a potent weapon for his side.

"At the age of 18, when most young men his age are still trying to find their way through life, Shaheen Shah Afridi has already played 22 international games and taken 44 wickets."
There is little doubt in anyone’s mind who has watched Shaheen Shah Afridi in operation that even at such a young age, he has the skills and potential to become a better bowler and his progress in international cricket is also proving that he is quickly learning the art of fast-bowling which is excellent news for Pakistan. Apart from being a fast-learner, Afridi has also shown himself to be not shy to try out different things with the ball which points to a sharp mind and confidence in his own abilities.

With the 2017 Champions Trophy winners now looking ahead to the upcoming World Cup tournament, Afridi’s current form in the ongoing Pakistan Super League where he is representing Lahore Qalandars would be a matter of great satisfaction for the team management and it may not be that far-fetched to assume that the young bowler could be Pakistan’s trump card in the mega-event in England later this year.

Pakistan will take on Afghanistan during the World Cup on 29th June at the Emerald Headingley Stadium, where the audiences will probably have a first-hand chance to witness the raw talent of the 6 foot 6” youngster in full flow and, if his past performances are any guide, should come away with great memories of one of international cricket’s rising stars Shaheen Shah Afridi.

Why have you mentioned Talat here? He has no future as a bowler. Your comment would have more credibility if you included Hasnain(the brightest young fast bowler and most exciting talent we have right now) but you talk about bits and pieces all rounders like Talat:)))
