Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club Media Release: Shaheen Signs For Outlaws As Notts Bolster Attack

Notts Outlaws have secured the services of Pakistan fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi for the duration of the 2023 Vitality Blast.

The left-arm quick, and explosive later-order batter, becomes the Outlaws’ second T20 overseas signing following that of top-order batter Colin Munro.

22-year-old Afridi, who burst onto the domestic scene with figures of 8-39 on Quaid-e-Azam Trophy debut, has 47 International T20 caps to his name, in addition to 25 Test and 32 One Day International appearances for his country.

His 58 IT20 wickets have come at an average of 22.37, whilst his 94 wickets for Lahore Qalandars, for whom he rose to prominence in 2018, have come at 20.75.

He has twice captained the franchise to titles in the Pakistan Super League, most recently earlier this month, where he struck a 15-ball 44* as his side wrapped up victory by one run in the showpiece final.

He also has previous T20 experience in England through a stint with Hampshire Hawks, and took 3-30 for the Men in Green as Pakistan defeated the Three Lions at Trent Bridge in the summer of 2021.

“Notts play an aggressive brand of cricket, which suits me well,” Afridi said.

“They’ve had great success in recent years and the likes of Alex Hales, Colin Munro and Joe Clarke are players I have faced up against in recent years and been impressed by.

“The goal is obviously to influence games to make the team as successful as possible.

“Having played at Trent Bridge, I know it is a fast-scoring ground and as a bowler you need to get your line and lengths right, but you also get the rewards when you do that.

“It’s definitely an exciting move for me, and one I’m looking forward to.”

Afridi enjoyed a profitable ICC Men’s T20 World Cup over the winter, claiming 11 wickets at an average of 14.09.

His wicket of Alex Hales in the final gave Pakistan the perfect start to England's chase, before he was forced off the field through injury.

His 18 wickets in T20 World Cup matches put him fifth on the all-time list for Pakistan, despite having only played 13 matches.

“In Shaheen, we’ve got a world class player - which is really exciting - and a player with a point of difference with the ball, which is crucial when we are looking to recruit,” Peter Moores said.

“We are building from a strong platform, with a lot of very talented lads hungry to play T20, and Shaheen adds star quality and a different angle to that group.

“He has proven himself on big stages; he is fiercely passionate in the way he plays his cricket, and he’ll be hugely engaging for everyone to watch for that reason.

“We want to bounce back from last year’s campaign, and this signing invigorates the club; he makes impacts in big games, and is a box office player.

“Alongside Munro, who is one of the top run scorers in the history of the format, we’ve got two very unique talents, both of whom will play a big role for us as we look to bring back silverware.”

Shaheen needs to make sure he comes back fresh from this and not jaded.

He should be looking for a stint in the longer format.Pointless him playing t20.

Some comments on Shaheen's signing:

Alex Hales: "Best in the business"

Stuart Broad: "Some signing this for @trentbridge - one of my favourite bowlers! Welcome to Shaheen Shah Afridi"

G8 signing for notts

My issue is Pak prime bowler playing PSL, Hundred & The blast all before a ODI world cup in October. PCB should never have given him the go ahead in playing 2 tournaments in one summer in England.

And the silly Ramadan Cup at that... Players of his caliber shouldn't be this hungry to go around in every league possible. It's not like he's in desperate need of money either. Not to mention he's also coming back from a long and bad injury. PCB needs to fix up and manage him properly before they destroy their most prized asset.

Yeah.

Not sure if Shaheen should play this. Better to stay rested before the World Cup.

It was a wicket which resonated around the world. A clatter of stumps followed by the click of a thousand cameras, capturing the moment for posterity.

When Shaheen Shah Afridi dismissed Alex Hales in the 2022 T20 World Cup final with the proverbial jaffa, Pakistan’s chances of claiming their fourth global title received an immediate boost.

Indeed, if Afridi had been able to complete his four overs without being forced from the field through injury, the Men in Green may well have gone on to lift the silverware, instead of Jos Buttler’s England.

It was a moment which left Hales, soon to be a teammate of Afridi’s at Notts during the 2023 Vitality Blast, in no doubt as to the quality of the man who sent him packing.

“In my opinion, with the late swing he gets from a six-foot seven frame, Shaheen is one of the best new-ball bowlers in the world,” said Hales.

“It was a lovely ball from him early on, and it meant I spent a lot of time in the changing rooms watching our chase. It was a pretty long and nervy hour and a half or so!

“Had Shaheen not been unfortunate enough to pick up an injury it could have been much tighter.

“He was devastated when he got injured: we could actually hear him shouting and grunting from the changing rooms.

“In the end, it was an awesome game of cricket – and to win the world title was as special as it gets.”

Afridi will join the likes of Jake Ball and Olly Stone in a pace-bowling battery blessed with international experience for the 2023 edition of the Blast – with reinforcements also having been recruited in the batting ranks.

Former New Zealand international Colin Munro – a title-winner in The Hundred alongside Hales last summer – will also represent the Outlaws this summer, and Hales believes his firepower could prove crucial.

“That is just an outstanding signing,” said Hales of Munro’s impending arrival.

“I’ve been lucky enough to play a lot of cricket with him over the past 12 to 18 months, and he’s an excellent player.

“He’s got the ability to adapt in all conditions – whether it’s a tough deck or a flat pitch – and he’ll be an excellent addition to the dressing room as a character.

“We have a bit to prove this year – missing out on the quarter-finals last season was an incredibly bitter pill to swallow – so we’re really keen to go out there and make a statement of intent.”

This is the era of t20 leagues ,apart from top 3 4 nations test cricket will finally come down to 4 5 test matches a year for each nation. Around 10 t20 leagues a year wont leave too much time for longer formats.

The only way Shaheen will get his pace back is bowling quick and in short bursts. The Blast and Hundred are perfect for this. He needs to bowl as many overs as he can. There is nothing wrong in his action or run up to suggest that there is any undue stress he will be going through. Unlike Bumrah, Shaheen needs to play as many games as possible to get back in rhythm and his best

T20 Blast and The Hundred.

The PCB should ask him just to play in one tournament rather than both.

When not playing for Pakistan he's free to do what he likes and earn as much money as he wants.

We play so much white-ball cricket anyway that this practise will be good for him

Shaheen, please stop wasting your body on these meaningless Mickey Mouse leagues.

PSL is understandable as you’d want to support the league of your home country.

But how many are you planning to pile up? You’re a fast bowler, not a t20 mercenary batsman playing leagues worldwide.

A guy of your skill should be aiming to play ODIs and tests and t20s only really at the WCs. Come on now.

What if he gets injured whilst playing these leagues and then not available for selection for Pakistan

Shaheen is acting like a washed up fighter who is looking for his cash-out fight. Sad to see.

Playing too many Mickey Mouse leagues. As a fast bowler he needs to rest more and concentrate more on fitness and playing first-class 4 day cricket because it's only in the longer format will be learn the skills and the art of taking wickets to become a complete fast bowler like Akram.

It's unfortunate that nowadays we don't have fast bowling mentors to guide and groom these young fast bowlers.

I understand the concern but i guess the best way to keep fit is to play competitive cricket

Considering the toxic situation in Pakistan its best Shaheen does some miles in england

#TheEagle is his hashtag at Notts!

Shaheen Shah Afridi speaking to Notts media:

Honestly very excited to be part of amazing team and looking forward to play some good cricket here.

Played here (Trent bridge) a couple of games for Pakistan as well and I have heard many times that this is a good wicket for batters but everywhere in the world T20 cricket is played at a fast pace.

Whenever I play club cricket and league cricket, I always enjoy the moment.

I always feel more energetic, and I want to bowl quicker and take some wickets so am always happy.

The game against Hampshire will be my first T20 blast game and I am here for seven games only.

Actually, I requested from Nottingham that I need again the ten number shirt, of course I wear that number for Pakistan, but I need that shirt for these games as well. Thank to them and Alex Hales who presented me the shirt.

Think Shaheen is mixed up his first t20 blast game would be tomorrow against Derbyshire or day after they play Lancashire

Should be good watch tomorrow we get to see Zaman khan and shaheen

The reality of Pakistan cricket, where A list players are not financially secured henceforth the lure for T20 leagues, PSL is a plus but still needs alot of work to be done on financial side though we can understand the obstacles PCB have, with the Giant BCCI in their way with IPL they will always struggle to attract world class players as Starc Cummins, only way forward is to add a marquee signing like having these kind of players for insane money to play 3/4 games to have a crack in that clout

Do you even know how much Pak top players earn?

An unchanged squad for the trip to Manchester for Notts - so Afridi should play.

Not at his best today.

The yorkers weren't quite firing on a very flat deck.

Didn't start well, but bowled a good 2nd over.

Disappointing loss for Notts

LANCS 208/4 (20)

NOTTS 186/5 (20)

Lancashire won by 22 runs

In a world cup year, bowling at one of the flattest decks in England is not going to help him regain form and fitness. Pretty brainless decision by the Pakistan think tank to let him go over to England.

There is no think thanks. I mean what on earth is Shaheen doing in Eng!

Same for Naseem Shah, plays like every sinlgle T20 leauge on planet earth.

Yes but he'd probably bowl fours overs in the nets while training too. Might as well get paid.

Not at his best once again.

Wicket was sluggish and he didn't quite work out how to bowl on it.

17* off 12 balls.

Some good hits, some wild slogs.

He doesnt have the same swing and pace he used to have not very long ago , needs to find his way back. He is not the sharpest minds around , may need a little help from his coaches and colleagues on how to use different pitches.

3 matches in the space of a few days.

I know it's only 4 overs at a time, but it is a bit worrying.

I am sure he works harder in the nets. Bowling is never a problem for him, but he should watch out in the field.

2 overs for 6 runs so far vs Yorks - lets see if he can get some wickets

Struggling Notts so far.

I would have thought they'd be one of the standout teams in the Blast this season.

His bowling in the shorter format has become too predictable. He needs to mix up his length and pace. Batsmen the world over now have a clear understanding on how he bowls.

All downhill at the moment for SSA

0/24 in 2 overs

Notts must be wondering what the heck is happening with their star signing?

"Kashif Ali nails one into the party stand, but then perishes to Shaheen next ball."

First wicket for Shaheen in this game - finally - but he is proving to be too expensive (1/33 in 3)

He's not having a great tournament is he.

Smashed for 45 in his 4 overs against Worcestershire.

5 wickets in 5 matches, but his economy-rate is 9.05.

Shaheen so far 2/13 in 2 overs - much more the Shaheen performances we expect.

3 wickets tonight, but his last 2 overs went for 26 runs.

Ended up with 3-39 from 4 overs.

Not bad in the context of the game. Also had a dolly dropped and some sloppy runs leaked.

Tale as old as time, bowler spends too much time trying to become a batsman because he can whack a few sixes and his bowling suffers for it

And Afridi's 3rd wicket is part of these highlights

Shaheen's 2nd wicket from yesterday's game - another clean-bowled.

An ordinary bowler once his first over is done and when there is no left hander to face up
