Congratulations.

May God give his daughter a good and righteous life.

All the best.

I wonder if he deep down yearns for a son now?

I feel like most men have better relationships with thier daughters than sons

A journalist has commented that Shahid Afridi should understand that control of population is important in Pakistan; Were 4 daughter's were not enough ? Or just the need for a male child was the reason for this? If he really wanted more children, could he not adopt some orphan(s) and given them a good life?

I really, really, really want Afridi to give a KO verbal punch to that nimrod.

Logically the reporter is right.

But there is a time and place for applying such logic.

Daughter's > son's. Can't say for sure if Afridi is desperate for a son but I have a few Pathan friends who are obsessed about having sons and they wouldn't even congratulate you properly if you had a daughter. I have two daughters and on my second one it was commiseration than congratulations. It obviously runs deep in our culture and isn't only limited to Pathans. I constantly get asked if I'm trying for a son and they get shocked when I say I'm more than happy with 2 daughters and don't need to try for more kids.

Betian Allah ki rehmat hoti hain, ma sha Allah. Congrats champ!

It's not only a pathan thing, it's in our Punjabi culture as well. Its sad to say but the mothers in law make the life of daughters in law hell for "producing" girls. My mum was one of the 3 girls born 1st and I remember her telling me that mother was taunted for it, her brother was the 4th. My poor gran died in her early 40s, not helped by the taunts.

"When a boy is born, then he brings one Noor (light) and when a girl is born, then she brings two Nooras"

Afridi has enough to sustain 10 kids and it should be nobodys business, he does enough philanthropy to keep every one shut.
Other take, since hes a celeb he does bare responsilibity and people will celebrate having 5 kids now, Overpopulation can kiss Good bye.
Pakistan 2020 population is estimated at 220,892,340 people at mid year according to UN data.
Time for 2 kids per family.

If that kid goes on and become the next prime minister of Pakistan, then why not. Congrats ! 5 kids is still consisered a small family in pakistan during my growing times having 8-9 kids was a norm in pakistani society.

Same was true in India during my parents’s days. 5-6 kids were a minimum.

Congrats to Afridi. Daughters are a blessing from God. I never understand why in our culture, people want sons so badly. Me personally, I don't even like boy kids. They are annoying as hell. I wanna have daughters only.

Wonder if people were to make same comments if he had 4 boys, wanted a daughter and ended up having another boy?

Probably would have said, respect for Afridi for respecting daughter.

Everyone is quick to judge.

Congrates to LaLa, his daughters and himself looks happy.

I wonder if he deep down yearns for a son now?

Most people want a mix of sons and daughters, but to his credit, Lala seems to be counting his blessings. We forget sometimes that many couples can't have kids at all, or have disabled children, stillborns and such.

Given his track record I doubt he has such lofty goals in mind. He could have very easily adopted a couple of kids from the Edhi foundation if his goals were so noble.

Tbh I agree with the journalist. Pakistan has got a huge population problem and when your superstars are not stopping such things then thats not a good thing

When you can’t have a son but won’t give up....

Well, congratulations to him. However, at some point you have to make peace with the fact that somethings are not meant to be.

5 often tends to be the threshold number in our Pakistani society after which people tend to give up and make peace with reality.

Again - the naive people here, who are out of touch with the realities of Pakistani culture, can take a high ground and criticize this practice or the assumption that Afridi is desperately trying for a son, but it is what it is. It is a reality of our society.

And no, it is not just Pashtun culture. Pretty much everywhere you go, if a couple end up having daughters, they usually keep trying for a son.

That is why, the percentage of rich, educated families having 4-5 daughters is higher than the percentage of rich, educated families having 4-5 sons.

There is no right answer for this.

The children of wealthy people like Afridi are more likely to be productive members of the society because they will have access to education.

On the other hand, the children of poor people are likely to end up as burden on the society and contribute to the poverty headcount.

Other people argue that poor people need more children because they need more family members to bring money home.

I personally subscribe to the former because 5 kids of a multi-millionaire can do more for the society than 5 kids of a fruit-seller.

Moreover, a state that can control population growth among the destitute will halt the growth of poverty in the long run, and raise the standard of living for the existing poor people.

Thus, if all the families below the poverty line and adopt a one child policy, 50 years down the line, their families would be much better off.

If he can support his kids financially, why does it matter if he has 5 or 50 of them?

First of all congrats to him and his family.

Anyways, Am I the only one seeing irony in this? Didn’t he say women belong in the kitchen and shouldn’t be playing sports?

God has blessed a guy who holds such a view or at-least held it once with 5 daughters :))

I hope he ensures they get proper education (not just religious education) and help them become good citizens who contribute to the society.

He obviously can afford it and has all the resources instead of thinking that he should just marry them off so that they just be a home-makers/ housewives all their lives .

Given his track record I doubt he has such lofty goals in mind. He could have very easily adopted a couple of kids from the Edhi foundation if his goals were so noble.

And who are we to question his goals?

Islam isn't really that welcoming to orphans.

For eg. if you adopt an orphan, then the step mother and the female members of the family are still a na-mehram to the child. It is not feasible to have child or sibling in a family for who you have to do purdah.

I don't understand what's wrong with wanting a son?

When some people want daughters people see them as noble but when someone asks for a son people see them as sexist or a misogynist.

Double standards

Lovely tweet.

Congrats. All his daugthers could get into the Pakistan's womens team one day just based on genetics and the support Afridi could provide. But he prefers them in kitchen(literally said that).

The journalist is right. Pakistan has limited territory with scarce resources (water, electricity, oil, jobs, etc.) and already a vast population. Afridi being a public figure needs to be a role model to others. If each married couple in Pakistan has 5 children, then there will be mass starvation in the country this century. Pakistan's enemies do not have to do anything as Pakistan will self-destruct due to over population.
The fertility rate per woman in Pakistan is about 3.6. This is one of the main reasons for the poverty.

Look at the fertility rates in the countries which are prosperous:

South Korea: 1.1
Italy 1.3
Japan 1.4
Canada 1.5
U.S. 1.8
France 1.9
Malaysia 2.0
