Karachi: Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Shaharyar Khan today said that he would step down from his post in August after completing his three-year term. “I have today conveyed to the members of the Board of Governors that I will step down on 18th August on completion of my term and I will not be contesting for another term as chairman or in any other capacity in the Board,” the 83-year old Shaharyar said.

Shaharyar, a former career diplomat, told the media in Lahore that he had already written to the patron in chief of the PCB, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif about his decision. “I have taken this decision for personal and health reasons,” he said. The former High Commissioner to India underwent a major heart surgery in London last year and they were rumours that he would step down.

But Shaharyar returned home and has carried on working as the head of the Cricket Board. “I have written to the Prime Minister that I am ready to step down, resign at any time if he wants before completion of my term,” he said. Shaharyar said if his resignation is accepted the complete constitutional procedure will be followed by the PCB to elect his successor.

Shaharyar also remained chairman of PCB between 2003 and 2006 and was instrumental in getting the Indian team to tour Pakistan in 2004 after a gap of nearly 14 years with the tour turning out to be a blockbuster success for cricket boards of both the countries.

Indications are that Najam Sethi, whom Shaharyar replaced as chairman in 2014 and who is now head of PCB’s executive committee, might again be elected as the new chairman of the Board in August or even before that.

Terrific guy. Will always be remembered for giving us PSL. Love how he changed PCB. Brought cricket home and continued to try to do so by inviting officials from teams around the world and almost convincing WI to tour. Terrific guy. The very best of luck for the future, Mr. Khan! May you be blessed with health and wealth..

Maybe The Nooras will break the habit of a lifetime and chose a professional rather a loyal cadre. Or is as more likely they will chose a loyal servant.

End of an era.

Was a better chairman than anyone I can remember.

God bless him, and thanks for everything.

Gotta give him credit for endlessly trying to get a series with India and improve our financial situation

It's a shame you can't clone a 45 year old version of Shaharyar Khan. He was superb first time round, but I'm sure that he's become a little disinhibited with advanced age which is why he makes the sort of silly comments that even a much younger Sethi makes.

There are now two huge challenges for Pakistan. One is to ensure that Sethi is not the next Chairman, as he would alienate every other country.

But the other is to ensure that Misbah-ul-Haq does not become the new Chairman. He's three years older than Rameez Raja was when he was the PCB CEO, and the reluctance of Mickey Arthur to be honest about Misbah's declining batting and horrendous bowling changes and fields as captain makes me very strongly suspect that Mickey Arthur expects to see Misbah as his boss - and PCB Chairman - before the end of this year.

Kevin Pietersen was silly enough not to rebuild his bridges with Andrew Strauss because he thought that when he retired he was gone forever. Only for Strauss to return as the England team supremo.

Mickey Arthur is a much smarter and more refined human being, and his excessively respectful attitude towards Misbah tells me that he knows that Shaharyar Khan is seeking to pass the Chairman's crown onto Misbah-ul-Haq.

Shakeel Shaikh for president. I think it's about time. The man deserves it.
Yes, I'm sure Sadaf Hussain can't wait for that.

If you remember the 1974 World Cup, the USSR refused to go to Santiago for their play-off against Chile because the Chilean junta was using the stadium as a location to torture and murder its opponents.

It would be fascinating to see how Shakeel Shaikh's blackball policies would change if he was in charge!

Nice person and did a lot for pak cricket . Now Pakistan needs a man like Rashid latif to overcome the worst problem they r facing ,i .e match and spotfixing

It is confirmed that Mr.Najam Aziz Sethi will become Chairman PCB for the third time.

Nazam Sethi isn't a bad choice actually. He might have other issues including corruption, & his appointment might be politically influenced, but he is capable of chairing that roles. May be appointing a capable CEO to look after the business & administration, while a CTO (Chief Technical Officer) to look after both internal & external cricket issues can help his course. I can't find that post now, but few years back, I read 10 points regarding PAK cricket from him - one of the best pieces, which is close to reality.

Najam sethi will bring back Moin khan in some capacity for sure when he takes charge... may be as the chief selector again or team manager or even as coach..:69:
