Shakib Al Hasan replaces Mushfiqur Rahim as Bangladesh Test captain

The Bangladesh Cricket Board held a general meeting today with big ramifications for Bangladesh cricket as a new captain was named following the meeting in Mirpur. Mushfiqur Rahim has been replaced by Shakib Al Hasan as the Test captain for the upcoming series against Sri Lanka in January 2018. Mahmudullah Riyad has been named Shakib’s vice-captain.

This series of changes was set off by the resignation of head coach Chandika Hathurusingha during the tour of South Africa in September-October. The BCB are currently interviewing candidates for the head coach position, with former coach Richard Pybus being a frontrunner and former West Indian cricketer Phil Simmons also being in the mix. However, board president Nazmul Hassan said on Saturday that the series against Sri Lanka may go ahead without a head coach, or an interim coach may be appointed from among local names, with Khaled Mahmud being the frontrunner.

Mushfiqur has led Bangladesh in 34 Test matches dating back to 21 October 2011 in the first Test against the West Indies in Chittagong. Under his leadership Bangladesh have won seven Tests, lost 18 and drawn nine. Mushfiqur started out as captain in all three formats, but at the end of a horrific 2014 when Bangladesh lost all their matches until Mushfiqur was replaced as T20I and ODI captain by Mashrafe Bin Mortaza.

Mushfiqur courted criticism throughout his tenure for his defensive mindset, but it reached a head on the recent tour of South Africa when he won the toss and fielded first in the Tests, both of which were lost by handsome margins. The opinion in the board seemed to have shifted against him, however, when he publicly lashed out at coach Hathurusingha and management after a poor showing on the field on the first day of the second Test in Bloemfontein.

Mashrafe’s retirement from T20Is meant that for half a year Bangladesh had three captains in three different formats, with Shakib being named Mashrafe’s replacement. Shakib’s appointment as Test captain today makes him skipper of two out of the three formats.

Expected move, though I don't think appointing a deputy, senior (by age) to Captain is wise. Pybus isn't a bad choice, but I would have liked some Aussie.

He's taking responsiblity now and he has making up to do for missing the test tour of South Africa, this was very disappointing and I am a Pakistani so if I was Bangladeshi I would be livid at him for that.

BCB is trying to negotiate with G Kristen as well, but he might not be interested for full time. If Pybus joins, then GK might work as consultant with short assignments.

GK would have been the best option, because of his management experience with IND - we need Head Coach, who can operate with a spin heavy attack.

Pybus is a terrible choice.

Probably, WI first policy was imposed by WICB - Pybus being an Englishman, working most of his life in SAF shouldn't have any fascination on "WI First" policy.

GK or Moody (or Siddons) was my first choice, but RP isn't bad; probably better than Simmons.

He was our captain between 2009-2012 or so. Later mushy took up the role and it eases of the pressure from Shakib.

Shakib is now more calmer so decent captaincy option.

Ideally I'd pick riad as captain but he isn't quality in tests

Ashraful was the Test Captain for almost 3 years (13 Tests), then he was "caught", they promoted his deputy (Mashrafee) and appointed Shakib vice Captain. Mash has about a dozen operation in his knees, so obviously he didn't last more than one Test (and that was his last), so Shakib was promoted and he led 9 Tests. After him, Mushfique led the side for 6 years, which in any standard is quite some time - in between, when he was injured, Tamim led one Test. In last 10 years, there had been 3 regular Captains - Ashraful, Shakib & Mushi. Had Ash not been caught, there was little chance for Mushi either.

I ODI, again since Ashraful, there had been only 3 Captains - Shakib (50 matches, in 2009-2011), Mushi (37, 2011 - 2014); Mash (50, 2010-2017). And, it wasn't musical chair either - Captains led the side for 3/4 years at one go.

In T20, same - only 3 Captains in 9 years since Ashraful - Shakib, Mushi, Mash.

Ashraful was around 25/26 when caught, already into his 3rd year as Captain - had he not bolted it, he would have led BD till 2015 WC, may be even later, then Shakib would have taken over. Your attachment is good for comic relief, but in appropriate here.

I can't believe you make someone the captain of the national side who decides to miss their most important tour in a while. It is not as if he was injured and he anyways decided to turn up for the shorter formats. Amazing how some boards work. Bangladesh do not get to play often in South Africa and Australia and their favourite player decides to take a break when they get a chance. BCB has now awarded him for that amazing effort by making him the captain.
