Former Australia all-rounder and Chennai Super Kings star Shane Watson is all set to retire from all forms of cricket. Watson, 39, had called time on his international career in 2016 but carried on playing franchise-based cricket tournaments, including the Indian Premier League.

Shane Watson made the decision after Chennai Super Kings' final IPL 2020 match against Kings XI Punjab on Sunday in Abu Dhabi. Watson is yet to officially announce his decision to retire from all forms of cricket.

Former Australia cricketer Tom Moody took to social media on Monday to wish Shane Watson on his 'remarkable IPL career'.

Shane Watson has been one of the icons of the Indian Premier League over the years, having scored 3874 runs and picked up 92 wickets. He was part of the Rajasthan Royals camp that went on to win the inaugural edition of IPL in 2008. Watson was the Most Valuable Player for the Shane Warne-led side as he scored 472 runs and picked up 17 wickets.

Watson spent 7 successful years with the Royals before moving to Royal Challengers Bangalore wherein he didn't find a lot of success.

However, Shane Watson revived his IPL career at Chennai Super Kings after he was bought in the IPL 2018 auction by the former champions. Watson was part of CSK's title-winning campaign in 2018. Watson hit a 57-ball 117 in the final against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Watson was not able to repeat the consistency of his inaugural season in IPL 2019 with CSK. However, the team management showed faith in him and Watson delivered in the style towards the business end of the tournament. Watson hit a valiant 80 with a bloodied knee but his effort went in vain as CSK lost the final to Mumbai Indians by 1 run.

Despite not hitting peak form, Watson chipped in with two fifties for CSK in the UAE. He finished the season with 299 runs.

Shane Watson aged like fine wine as he was consistent across high-profile T20 leagues. In the 2018-19 Pakistan Super League, Watson topped the batting charts with 430 runs from 12 innings at 43.

Watson won the World Cup with Australia twice, in 2007 and in 2015. In Tests, Watson scored 3731 runs and picked up 75 wickets, and picked up 5757 runs in ODIs and took 168 wickets to finish his career as one of the leading all-rounders of his era.

Opens up a spot in the Quetta Gladiators. Wonder who will open for them now.

Wow

CSK will be losing Dhoni, Watson, Tahir, possibly Bravo also

The whole Franchise will need a complete revamp

Tahir is definitely playing next year, what makes you say otherwise?

He’s not good enough. Can’t field, can’t bat...bowling seems predictable.

If he is picked it will have to be at a pensioners rate.

CSK retained players:

1. Faf Du Plesis
2. Ruturaj Gaikwad
3. Sam Curran
4. Lungi Ngidi
5. Ambati Rayadu
6. Ravendre Jadeja
7. Karn (leggie)

These 7 should definitely stay, don’t know what’s the maximum number they can definitely retain

Time for Aaron Finch to make the most of his name and brand and cling on to whatever he can now. Could be a good 3-5 year gig for him.

They need Archer or bumrah or maybe Starc.

Bumrah won't go. Archer possibility.
Starc doesn't want to play.

Piyush Chawla, Du Plessis are also unlikely to stay relavant. I hope CSK also kick out Dhoni from the team. He is unlikely to giveup $$$. According to reports, CSK also has said good bye to Raina permanently. We will see totally different CSK next year. I think CSK will pick up players from bench of other teams. Players like Aditya Tare, Tom Banton, Parthiv Patel, Umesh Yadav, Sandeep Lamichanne will be picked i guess.

When it came to announcing on Tuesday that his career was over, Shane Watson surely didn't need any practice.

The former Australian all-rounder was said to have been "very emotional" when delivering the news to his Chennai Super Kings teammates in the Indian Premier League. That underscored how all these years later - it's been more than 18 since he stepped out for Australia for the first time - he still enjoyed the camaraderie that came with the sport.

However, he shouldn't have had any trouble delivering the news for this was his fourth retirement. To those keeping count, he had retired from Test cricket after the losing 2015 Ashes series. Then came his farewell to international Twenty20 cricket a year later. In recent seasons he bade farewell to the Big Bash League. And, now, the final curtain.

Seven months shy of his 40th birthday, Watson finishes having represented 28 "major" teams, including Australia, according to cricinfo. For a man whose durability had been an issue in his younger years - soft tissue injuries meant he had to pull out of the 2003 World Cup squad, while he was hurt on the eve of the 2006-07 Ashes series when Australia had hoped he would morph into the new Andrew Flintoff - Watson showed remarkable stamina. In this regard, he had the last laugh

He capitalised on the franchise era that would have so suited the likes of Dean Jones and the Waugh twins of yesteryear. Here's hoping, though, he had the one superannuation account otherwise he has some chasing up to do.

He may have largely been off Broadway in recent times but could be found in Twenty20 competitions in the Caribbean, Bangladesh, Pakistan or, wait for it, captaining the Sindhis T10 squad in Pakistan. While the Australian cricket team has not been to Pakistan since 1998, Watson had no issue heading there.

He played 59 Tests, and was a key player for a time in the post-Ricky Ponting world. He had loved playing under Ponting, not so much under Michael Clarke whom he was deputy to. Watson handled Clarke's description of him as being a "like a tumour" - their issues re-emerging in 2016 - as an adult should. While he could carry a pained look, Watson's composed views were always worth listening to.

Watson had power with bat in hand but it shouldn't be forgotten he played his best Test cricket as an opener, including a century in Melbourne in 2009. All up, he averaged 35.19 with four centuries and took 75 wickets at 33.68. Life as an all-rounder is a tough craft. Successor Mitch Marsh still hasn't shaped up, and it may soon be over to Cameron Green.

Of course, Watson will also be remembered for his troubles with the Decision Review System. He played across his front pad too often - he was trapped in front 14 times in Ashes Tests - and admitted to making too many "bad reviews". Something many a fan would agree with.

It's been some ride for a man who made his international debut against South Africa at Centurion in 2002. To put that in perspective, it was Ponting's first series as ODI skipper, at a time when Steve Waugh still had two years to run as Test captain.

Watson won't be lost to cricket because he remains president of the Australian Cricketers' Association. If anyone understands the modern game, it is him.

Phenomenal limited overs cricketer. He retired a bit too early from international cricket. Australia could have benefited from his presence in ODIs and T20Is until 2017-18, if not the 2019 World Cup.

He is still better than Stoinis and Marsh.

From what I gather he had a few injury woes and came across as a bloke with a brittle body builder frame, that may also explain part of the reason for his retirement and perhaps the pains were too much :mv :amir

Not sure why CSK didn't play Stephen Fleming this season.

A class cricketer one of the best in odis .the battle against wahab was the highlight for me

Australian great Shane Watson has been appointed to his first head coaching role with the former international allrounder to lead the San Francisco Unicorns in the inaugural Major League Cricket tournament.

Watson will be greeted by an abundance of familiar faces at the Unicorns with the franchise set to have a distinctly Aussie feel for the United States' T20 competition.

Excellent commentator. Incisive and doesn't deal in bland inanities like many commentators.

Is he one of the most underrated All rounders?

In Test along you may find better but overall in all formats and in modern Cricket his stat in ODIs and T20Is still stand tall. In fact there are many players in World Cricket right now who's stat, record and performances are similar to Watson's except for the fact that they are primarily bowlers or batters. While Watson was an All Rounder.
