The Sharif family’s luxury flats in an upscale London neighbourhood, which are at the centre of the Panamagate scandal, had been purchased in the 1990s and since then there has been no change of ownership, BBC Urdu reported citing official documents.

The four apartments in the Park Lane neighbourhood had been purchased in the name of Nielsen Enterprise Ltd and Nescoll Ltd — the two offshore companies named in the Panama Papers, according to the report.

The official records of companies doing business in the United Kingdom reveal that when Hassan Nawaz, son of Premier Sharif, set up a company, Flagship Investment Ltd in 2001, he had provided his Park Lane apartment’s address at the time of registration.

In May 2015, the Panama Papers, an unprecedented leak of 11.5m files from the database of the world’s fourth biggest offshore law firm, Mossack Fonseca, revealed that three scions of the Sharif family are among thousands of powerful people of the world who had secreted their monies in offshore tax havens.

The revelations stirred up a political firestorm in the country, with opposition parties, especially Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, accusing the ruling Sharif family of corruption and money laundering and calling for their accountability.

In subsequent interviews, Premier Sharif’s son Hussain Nawaz admitted the family’s ownership of Nielsen and Nescoll, the two offshore companies named in the Panama Papers.

“The Park Lane apartments in London are owned by Nielsen and Nescoll, and I am the beneficial owner of these companies, which are working under a trust held by my sister Maryam Nawaz Sharif,” Hussain had said at the time.

A five-judge larger bench of the Supreme Court is hearing a slew of petitions filed by opposition politicians seeking disqualification of Premier Sharif in light of the Panama Papers revelations.

In his reply in the top court, Hussain said he was the sole owner of the properties abroad. “Entities [properties] are being managed under a trust arrangement for the sole benefit of Hussain Nawaz, with Maryam Nawaz being the trustee thereof. Other than the role of a trustee for and on behalf of Hussain Nawaz, Hassan Nawaz has no concern, relationship, ownership or control of the entities and/or the properties,” he said.

He further submitted that the source of funds resulting in vesting of beneficial ownership of the entities and, consequently, the properties of Hussain Nawaz, in January 2006, was the investment made by the late Mian Muhammad Sharif, father of Premier Sharif, in 1980, from the sale proceeds of his steel business in Dubai.

No part of the funds resulting in vesting of beneficial ownership of the entities in favour of Hussain were generated or transferred/transmitted from Pakistan, states the reply adding that before Jan 2006, none of the entities or properties was owned by any of the Sharif family members.

Premier Sharif’s second son Hassan Nawaz, in his reply, stated that he was not and had never been owner of any of the properties or entities. He further stated that none of the members of the Sharif family had purchased the properties between 1993 and 1996.

Conversely, the BBC report says one of the Mayfair Apartments, 12-A, is owned by a British company, Flagship Investment Ltd. And the company’s documents show that Hassan is its director. The Flagship Investment Ltd purchased Flat 12-A in the Avenfield House on January 12, 2004. Apart from that, Hassan is also the director of four companies which have the same address of the Mayfair apartments.

According to the documents of the organisation keeping records of sale and purchase of properties in London, the first flat in the central London neighbourhood of Mayfair, 17 Avenfield House, had been purchased on June 1, 1993 by the Nescoll Ltd.

Similarly, another apartment, Flat 16, in the same Avenfield House had been purchased on July 21, 1995 by the Nielsen Enterprise Ltd. A third flat, 16-A, in the same building had been purchased on the same date by the same company. And the fourth flat, 17-A, had been purchased in July 1996 by the Nescoll Ltd.

According to the BBC, Premier Sharif’s sons had been approached for their version about the ownership and purchase of these flats, but they did not reply despite the passage of two weeks.

On November 15, the Sharif family had submitted a letter purportedly from a Qatari prince before the top court, which reads: “My father had longstanding business relations with Mian Muhammad Sharif, which were coordinated through my eldest brother. Our families enjoyed and continue to enjoy personal relations.” The prince further stated that as per his understanding at that time an aggregate sum of around 12 million dirhams had been contributed by Mian Sharif, originating from the sale of business in Dubai, UAE.

The letters further claims that the London flats were registered in the ownership of two offshore companies’ bearers share certificates of which were kept during that time in Qatar. These were purchased from the proceeds of the real estate business. “On account of the relationship between the families, Mian Muhammad Sharif and his family used the properties whilst bearing all expenses relating to the properties, including the ground rent and service charges.”

The Qatari prince further claims Mian Muhammad Sharif wished that beneficiary of his investment and returns in the real estate business would be his grandson Hussain Nawaz. He also reveals that in 2006, the accounts in relations to the investment were settled between the al Thani family of Qatar and Hussain Nawaz through which the properties had been transferred to the latter.

However, the Sharif family did not submit any documentary proof to establish that the settlement had been done between the families in 2006.

that report card panel has almost all members anti-PTI and biased people like Safi,Imtiaz,Niazi. These guys cannot give their opinion without showing their bias towards PTI. I have stopped watching that show long time ago. It's a waste of time when these guys can't rise above their personal grudge against PTI and Imran Khan..same is case with Talat's show. The guy has Imran Phobia as well. stop torturing yourself by wasting time watching these stupid shows. These guys are pretty much sold out.

I watch that show only because of Hassan Nisar's 5 minutes in it and i switch channels when others start talking.

You know that Hafeez Ullah Niazi who sit daily to bash Imran in that show is the brother in law and cousin of Imran. Imran denied PTI ticket to Inamullah Niazi (brother of Hafeez Ullah Niazi) back in 2013 so he left PTI and gone back to PMLN

I had some respect for Talat since his PTV day but in last few years it looks like he sold his soul it's pretty clear from his shows and tweets.

Safi is a pro ANP nationalist pakhtoon so his hate for PTI is obvious.

yeah I know their background history and that's why I said they have personal thing with PTI. No analyst should be biased especially when he is asked to give his opinion..having difference of opinion is one thing but you lose all credibility when you have some personal issues with one party and you are asked to give your opinion on the issue.

Saleem Safi, I can't even believe this guy became an analyst. This guy should be only doing Afghan-Pak related shows, not give his opinion about political matters. He tries to give some impression that he is some great philosopher which he is not. It's really sad to see today every other reporter or comedian has become an analyst.

Sharif to the court:

No part of the funds resulting in vesting of beneficial ownership of the entities in favour of Hussain were generated or transferred/transmitted from Pakistan, states the reply adding that before Jan 2006, none of the entities or properties was owned by any of the Sharif family members.

In reality:

According to the documents of the organisation keeping records of sale and purchase of properties in London, the first flat in the central London neighbourhood of Mayfair, 17 Avenfield House, had been purchased on June 1, 1993 by the Nescoll Ltd.

A third flat, 16-A, in the same building had been purchased on the same date by the same company. And the fourth flat, 17-A, had been purchased in July 1996 by the Nescoll Ltd.

How can anyone support these crooks anymore? That's why you won't see oh-we-don't-support-Noon league-but-will-defend-them-everywhere types in these threads.

This guy deserves to be in jail

Forget them, can you imagine certain people here had this been Imran Khan? The hilarious thing is that some namoonays will smash people like Amir yet who do they support? (Oh I mean not supportbutstilldefendthemeverywhere?) Noon League. :))

Nawaz has lied to the country, to the assembly and to the court. In ANY other country this crook would be behind bars for money-laundering. In our country he is the PM and we are still debating in the useless court who the burden of proof is on.

Also WebGuru, the only thing that the court were telling PTI to 'prove' is the ownership of the flats ie before 2006.

Surely this settles it?

The court was hoping that they couldn't but now they can, they have to find some other reason to let off the Sharifs. This whole facade is done to make it look like justice is being done but the outcome is a forgone conclusion. I will give £500 to charity if he is convicted.

Maybe for them a corrupt cricketer shouldn't represent his country again but it's ok to be corrupt and still be a PM for the 3rd time?

We are told about IK's uturns all the time but nobody talks about the uturns of sharif brothers. I saw a very long list of noonturns the other day will post here later but well uturns are only bad if they are related to IK.

True but i am sure judges will find another way to save sharifs here :D

Nothing special in BBC report. This is already known and concerned documents are in court.
The Sharifs and their apologists have all the tricks up their sleeves. They claim that flats are owned by offshore companies i.e. Nielsen and Nescol but these companies were owned by someone else (qatri?) before Sharifs bought them in 2005/6 and along came the flats.

I wonder if it is really hard to find out when these companies were bought by Sharifs?

These documents above weren't known before yesterday. And prove that the flats were only owned by Sharifs before 2006.

I'm an Imran khan supporter and Ive backed the PTI..but I can tell you, and this is becasue I know a teeny bit about how the PMLN uses gullu butts, that nothing will come of this..here's what i predict will happen..

The sharifs will dragged this out through 2017..Pakistani courts can be used to drag out whatever you want if you have the money and gullu butts..so theyll drag this out till early 2018..then nawaz will resign by around april 2018 and we will have elections by september. Theyll win again and say, see we resigned but teh people have voted us in again, no more accusations now..chulo back to normal...etc etc..

they are a mafia and you dont get rid of these people like this..the gullu butts are ghunday..I know one chap they recruited..a former jailbird druggie, low class chap who is now a big shot...theyll kill for you, steal for you and do all sorts ..NS and SS arent a flash in the pan..they are "business men" ...like the mafia..

So today, the Noon lawyer didn't even bother establishing the phoney money-trail and instead spent his time arguing/begging the court that they can't dismiss the PM.

Ruling family baulks at legal action against BBC

ISLAMABAD: The ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz has been seemingly deterred from pursuing legal action against the BBC over a recent report on the Sharif family’s property in London, fearing such a move would backfire and open up a Pandora’s box for the party both nationally and internationally.

Informal talks with PML-N sources suggest the party leadership, while thoroughly reviewing the BBC Urdu report which stated that the Park Lane apartments have been in the Sharifs’ possession since the ’90s, is not keen about suing the British media group.

“It could backfire,” a key confidante of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif told The Express Tribune on condition of anonymity. “In a country like the UK, unless you have solid grounds, you are doomed if you legally take someone on.”

The legal teams of Prime Minister Nawaz and his family members have advised them against pursuing the matter legally and suggest that they stick to ‘public denials and condemnations’ of the BBC report, the insider said. “It is difficult to determine if we would be able to win such a case. In a situation like this, the best option is to exercise caution and restraint.”

Another source with direct knowledge of the matter said the BBC report is being minutely examined by the government to find loopholes and contradictions. “Playing up the contradictions, if any, could help face saving.”

BBC Urdu reported on Friday that the properties owned by the Sharif family in London’s upscale Park Lane neighbourhood were purchased in the 1990s. According to official documents available with BBC Urdu, the Nielson and Nescol offshore companies purchased the flats in the 1990s and there has been no transfer of ownership ever since. Citing an official record of companies doing business in the UK, the report also stated that Premier Nawaz’s son Hassan Nawaz gave the address of the Park Lane apartment while setting up Flagship Investment Ltd in 2001.

Speaking to The Express Tribune, Prime Minister’s Adviser Ameer Muqam said no decision over initiating legal action against BBC Urdu has been taken so far. “Any decision would be taken after thoroughly reviewing the matter while weighing all pros and cons.” He criticised the timing of the BBC report, saying it surfaced just as the Supreme Court is hearing the Panamagate case against the premier.

“Why such a story has appeared when this matter is pending in court? This needs to be investigated,” he said, adding that elements “who leak incorrect information to the media to weaken the government will not succeed.”

Asked if he meant opposition parties, especially Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, were behind the story, Muqam said, “I can’t say who is behind it but whoever it is, is not doing any good to this country.”

PML-N Chairman and Leader of the House in Senate Raja Zafarul Haq also thought the timing of the story meaningful. “At a time when the matter is being dealt by the honourable court, the surfacing of this kind of news is a factor of concern for us regardless of what is written in it. Such news also surfaced in the past and were proved wrong.”

Haq, however, avoided responding when asked if the Sharif family, ruling party or federal government had any plan to move court in the UK against the story. “I am not privy to developments at legal side. Any decision would be taken after looking into the matter in detail.”

Political analyst and former ECP secretary Kanwar Dilshad said strict defamation laws in the UK virtually do not allow the publication of baseless news. “If you have something ‘rock solid’ backed by concrete documentary evidence and all verified facts, only then you go about publishing something as sensitive as the report BBC Urdu has published. I have gone through the story and I can say that the government would be in trouble. It will affect the government given that a related case is pending in the Supreme Court. If Sharif family or government or PML-N makes the mistake of waging a legal battle against BBC in the UK, it would be brewing more problems for itself.”

So according to latest inside reports Innocent Sharifs are not interested in suing the BBC they think "It could backfire" :))) Chor ki daarhi main tinka...

How these people have supporters I will never know.

They wont sue because they will be humiliated in court, unlike our SC, the UK courts cant be bought. If our judges were honest they would know from this failure to sue as an admission of guilt.

I will give £500 to charity if he is convicted.

There is zero hope even if he is convicted. The Saudis or Americans will bail him out.

Watch this depressing video. This is how things work in Pakistan unfortunately.

One of the most honest and painful videos I have seen in an long while. Shame on us PK's for selling our soul for money and letting these criminals anywhere near our govt.

These nooras never disappoint you  Today they came up with this planted news in media that BBC is backing down from their story and within a couple of hours BBC denied it lol :))) Why not take BBC to courts if you are innocent? Koi sheram hoti hai koi haya hoti

Mamoon what do you make of this, you're a supporter of sharif are you not?

Mamoon what do you make of this, you're a supporter of sharif are you not?

I don't talk politics on PP anymore, but no I am not a Nawaz supporter.

I would say what I said on day 1. There is no doubt in my mind that he is guilty, but as a responsible citizen of Pakistan who respects and abides by the Constitution, I will respect the decision of the Supreme Court either way.

Challenging the Supreme Court is a democratic threat and not good for the long-term prosperity of Pakistan. It will set a wrong precedence. The Sharifs and Imran Khans and Zardaris will not be there after 30 years, but it is imperative that the democratic spirit of Pakistan survives, which it has over the last 9 years.

People do not like them, but the fact is that Zardari and Nawaz were democratically elected and they have survived the external pressures so far which is democratic triumph. If the SC decides to dismiss Nawaz (and also Imran, inevitably) it will also be a democratic triumph, but individuals like Imran Khan should not be taking matters into their own hand. No one is above the law and it sets a dangerous precedence for the future.

In addition, I hope that the new Chief will resist his pleas for a Martial Law like Raheel did. Military power has done enough damage to Pakistan already, and should not interfere with politics.
