Sharjeel was a decent player in 2013, but his leg sided hoicks were nothing to write home about.

Sharjeel 2.0(comeback)

1.Picked by IU at the PSL. (Dean Jones game him a lot of confidence ). Scored a century

2.Picked for WT20, scored well against AUS and NZ

Mickey and Co. worked with him.

3.Picked for ODI squad against ENGLAND, WI. Stood upto the expectations.

4.Picked for test squad against AUSTRALIA.
Scored a 40

Since his comeback.
He has become one of Pakistan's backbone in LOI's.

in ODI's since his comeback.

Avg of 44+ in 14 Odis (10 matches against and in AUS and ENG, with just one match against a minnow )and strike rate of 130+

For Pakistan to get an opener of 44+ average,is itself a challenge.
And to score at 130+ strike rate is just incredible


What remains to be seen is, will he be as consistent as he is now, or would he fade like others.

Hope he's here to stay

I think a more pertinent question to ask why did it take so long for him to be selected. That gives you a sense of how talent is managed in Pakistan. I am not saying his selection was long overdue, but you had guys like Haroon Rasheed as chief selector saying, he was one-trick pony etc etc.

Its a strange cautionary tale to draw conclusions from:
on the one hand quite a few selectors from the past were "sharjeel who?"
on the other we have selected the guys because of the PSL: a televised reasonably world class event where his century in the final sealed the case for him.
In other words, he would not have caught the popular imagination without the PSL.

I dont know how I feel about that: that out selectors could not see the talent in him, before the PSL

He did play in 2013 and to be honest he was limited. Very limited

even in the Asia Cup 2016 you could see he was limited. But its good. He is improving every series

Yes.
I would love to give credit to Deano.

He gave him a lot of confidence.

Sharjeel himself acknowledged, as to how helpful, Deano was.

Atlast, Deano is a professional, and so is Mickey.

Point is you have to back players to ride out the tough times. He has shown the character to improve his game, even in his come back. I recall the first few odi's in england people wanted to burn him at the stake. I am not saying that I somehow saw the inner strength of the man, I didn't. But I do expect selectors to know these things: not just numbers, but rather who has character.
 
He wasn't limited in the 2016 Asia cup. He's just improving temperamentally every game Where are those geniuses who said he will only make 20s and 30s in this series? Pakistani fans lack any patience and foresight and unnecessarily labeled this guy a hack. He is comfortably the best LOI opener in Pakistan and in terms of ability no one comes close to him.

He is very very still when the ball is delivered. People are deceived by his girth: they expect he is going to bash it. He does bash, but he has excellent timing as well and for that you need great balance and a perfectly still head.
 
What pleases me the most is, his gradual improvement.

He's no Warner.

But he knows, what the team needs.

Last 2 odi's especially today's, his strike rotation was much better than babar's.

Also he was putting value on his wicket.

Only if he can improve his fitness, he would be a real deal

You mentioned that he has worked with Arthur and Dean Jones, that's the difference good coaching makes. Ideally we would have better coaching at grassroots levels though. As Mamoon said under Waqar he was going nowhere.
 
His emergence has been a breathe of fresh air. Makes our otherwise mediocre LOI batting semi-exciting.

Needs to build on this performance though. Next up should be looking to convert his 50s into big 100s. He's starting to put value on his wicket, if he continues to improve his fitness levels, he'll get there.

He has enough talent to be ok at the international level, but i just don't see the hunger. I take the point that he has improved but i never feel that he has a feel for the game or cares much for the end result but the worst part of it is that he is amongst the better players from Pk.

between Sharjeel and Babar you have a solid base for a top order

then you add guys like Hafeez, Azhar and Akmal - and you're pretty much asking for no. 9 ranking
 
The only problem is that Sharjeel is a pathetic fielder. Sharjeel and Haris Sohail can be the mainstays of Pakistani batting along with Babar Azam. Its sad that both Sharjeel and Haris are poor fielders and very lazy in the field. On the other hand we have guys like Ahmed Shehzad, Asad Shafiq and Umar Akmal who are much better in fielding but they are not good enough for international LOI's.
 
I respect Waqar as one of the few honest and disciplined men in Pakistan cricket. However some on here claiming he had a part in Sharjeel's comeback need a reality check. Sharjeel performed well in the PSL which forced the team management to include him in the T20 World Cup. Waqar tried him as an opener for one T20 against Sri Lanka in early 2015 but he was dropped after making something like 50 off 25 balls. Even if he was a limited leg-side hack back than he should have been persisted with rather than the likes of Shehzad and Mukhtar. Waqar was never a visionary or spotter of raw talent like his mentor Imran but he was a no nonsense type guy who I admire. However we must refrain from changing facts to favor our beliefs.
 
What sets Sharjeel apart is his ability to hit boundaries with ease off of bad balls. We currently lack such stroke makers and that is one of the biggest reason behind our shortcomings in limited overs cricket. I hope Ahmad Shahzad can get his act together and get back in the team because he was another batsman that could get boundaries at will (inability to get ones and twos is a different subject).
 
i loved his batting in the last game where he started a lil slow just to get his feet in and then charged the bowlers.. as said before he can be the Sehwag of Pakistan.. just need to get a little fitter then what he is at the moment.
If he gets a bit leaner he can play those pull shot way better then he is now..
A great future let him be what he is..
I just watch pak play because of him.

Also pakistan should use shahzaib hassan now that he is in such great form..Future seems Good second Psl should do wonders..

What?!

It would be better to term it as some people had no batting or talent identification sense, rather than calling him a leg side hack.

I knew he'd be excellent when I saw him first, and been supporting him from that day. I know, he was called a legside hack by many, but that was wrong.
 
He's always done well against the fast bowlers but I think he struggles badly against spinners and does not have proper footwork for sub continent pitches. He will give good starts but won't convert them into big innings unfortunately. However, he's the best we've got from the current lot so I am hoping he continues to improve for the sake of Pakistan cricket.

Zampa is a quality ODI spinner and he played him pretty well.

And it was during waqar tenure he was dropped after scoring a 25 ball 50. Plus it was afridi who got him back as I clearly remember him saying that he would get reward for his performance when he hit that century at the pal. Try harder next time.

Well he is an opener so I'd rather him struggle against spinners than fast bowlers like Hafeez and co.

From memory during the 2012 t20 wc then manager Zaheer Abbas almost ended sharjeel's career because he "wasn't a proper batsman". That despite the fact sharjeel had made 50 in his previous t20

Disagree with that, purely because of his overall importance. The guy needs fitness, needs to improve his fielding and importantly needs to learn to throw few overs..He reminds me of young Gayle though.Long long way to go

I'm a big fan of him. Composed demeanour . Need to work on his fitness to extend his cameos.

he was known for his powerhitting but he was in hederabad team so he was not getting many chances to perform
 
Sharjeel was Malinga's bunny and totally lost it in Sri Lanka after a good first match show. Pakistanis aren't known to encourage stroke play another reason Sharjeel was dropped quickly.

He is lucky now that Arthur is there so he will not be dropped even after a poor series.

Sharjeel was part of the ODI squad for our short tour of Sri Lanka in 2014, which also happened to be Waqar's first assignment. He was dropped after two failures and never got another game for Pakistan in any format until the Asia Cup in 2016, which was right after the PSL. Also, it is pretty clear that Afridi strongly vouched for his selection given his public promise following his hundred vs Zalmi.

Had Waqar seen any potential in Sharjeel, he would have insisted on his selection during the two years that he was coach. It is pretty clear that getting picked by Dean Jones in the PSL and the appointment of Arthur was the best thing that could have happened to Sharjeel and his fledging career.
 
While I liked the reforms waqar tried to bring his record on bringing through players is quite poor.

Seems to have similar proclivities as misbah
 
My wish is that, Pakistan should find another Opener to partner Sharjeel.

Then it would do a world of good for the parosis.

OK it might have been watmore. But please stop lying as well it was afridi who got him in and according to reports waqar wanted salman butt. Shows what kind of a coach he was and that too for the t20 world cup. You don't need to defend something which is wrong. It won't hurt you.
 
Can one of the wizards do a comparison with Nasir Jamshed based on number of games etc.? I remember Jamshed being the next best thing since sliced bread - so it would be good to know

Some PP'ers even went so far as saying that Jamshed was better than Anwar and would easily surpass Inzi if he plays for long. That backfired quite spectacularly lol.


That being said Jammy will always have a special place in my heart for his performance in the Aane Do series.

How did Jamshed lose it? Its unexplainable and unbelievable really. Because he lost it completely even in domestic cricket. How can one go from potentially world class to a big zero everywhere?
I hope he regains his beastly form and partners sharjeel later on. He isnt old yet. I know chances of it happening are very low though.

Just need someone for the 7 spot really for some lower order booms - looking to the PSL for one or two newbies.
 
Sharjeel recently said in an interview before the 5th odi that when he was sitting on the sidelines during the test series he told him self not to throw his chance when he finally gets it...and that he was going to meet with Warner after the odi series and ask him on training methods etc.

I think Sharjeel deserves more credit than Deano, Mickey, or whoever. He stepped up his game and has shown a continued determination to get better...this is also the reason why he gained confidence with every game because what he was applying actually gave him results. If a player can't figure out what works and what doesn't - they shouldn't be in the team. Prime examples of this are Hafeez, Akmal, Shafiq.

yes we replaced him with world class talent didn't we. At least he could dominate quality fast bowlers unlike the other players we keep recycling.

Waqar-Misbah combination was the worst ever we had especially for our ODI side. These guys wanted technically sound,having great temperament and cool players at the crease. They didn't bother about the modern day ODI requirements and made strategy to actually win the games and develop good team for 2015 world cup.

Nasir Jamshed,Khurrum Manzoor,Younis Khan(opened in the 2015 world cup), Asad Shafiq,Sarfraz Ahmed, Shehzad to think a few.

Nasir Jamshed was only gold against India..also he was somewhat an ftb. Sharjeel has left Nasir behind after dominating the series in Australia. He can be in the leagues of Warner,Maxwell,Roy. Just needs to improve his fitness and bit of hard work against spin.

It's very rare to see a subcontinent player dominating fast bowling like SHarjeel. That's why he becomes very important part of our team. We need more of this approach. Enough of seeing the new ball off and attacking the spinners strategy.

The bookies are better selectors of the talent, only pick most talented players. Amir, Asif, Butt and now Sharjeel. What a loss, just sad.

Players should understand, until someone rises to a certain level, he cannot cheat, will be caught.

People who commit even bigger frauds and corruptions and get away with that, they're in a different "league".

Don't want to make this a political thread but I'm sure everyone understands what I'm talking about.
 
I simply don't get it. If he is really did fix or is involved, why do they do it? Don't they see the risks? I'm totally broken inside.

This guy was on t way to be one of the pakistan's finest openers.

Alas. Hope he comes back in an year, and it would be Sharjeel 3.0
