Reports suggest he has been receiving threats that a video will be released about him if he doesn't pay up RS.200k. Sharjeel is saying the video is fake and he has informed the PCB and law enforcement authorities. Apparently the PCB have received no report from Sharjeel.

Poor guy! Pakistan cricketers are victims of social media

Let the video come out (if it does) and than judge who is the hero and who is the villain otherwise it's a No news.

He should be provided adequate security though.

This is unfortunate, but I am surprised at the amount. 2 lakh PKR seems to be very low to extort from a celebrity.

What is this video about? If he is clean then he should not be having anything to be scared about.

HYDERABAD: Cricketer Sharjeel Khan says he is receiving threatening phone calls from an ‘unidentified man’ seeking money and also warned of releasing his “fake video’ if the sought amount was not given.

In a video message on his Facebook account, Khan said he was receiving calls from an unknown number. He said the caller was threatening to leak his ‘video’. He however declined to share further about nature of the video.

Sources informed that the caller was demanding Rs 9 million from the cricketer and warned of leaking his ‘private video’ in case of non-payment.

He clarified in advance that any video released implying himself would be ‘completely fake’

It is learnt that the person could not be traced as yet. While Khan has also not registered complaint with the law enforcers, instead he posted a message on social media.

Sharjeel Khan believes that some elements are attempting to defame his name.

ARY News correspondent Shahid Hashmi says it is expected that Sharjeel would have informed the police and other relevant authorities about threatning calls. However, Khan has not confirmed it yet.

Khan has represented Pakistan in 11 One-Day International and Twenty20 Internationals each. He is considered one of the explosives batsman of Pakistan in the T20 format.

Shameful behaviour from whoever is doing that to sharjeel hope they catch the person

such a video would proly be a video of something embarrassing

you would ideally want it not to be in open but it isnt that huge that you would break the bank to keep it off

Whatever he does outside the cricket ground is none of anyone's business. It's his life, his choices.

Yes the video might lead to a media outrage in Pakistan but that is no reason to pay up this blackmailer scumbag.

Suggest no speculation on contents of video

This is why I fell in love with Pakistan cricket.

Never a dull day with it. The most exciting team in cricket both on and off field.

If its private video than nothing to do with his cricket and should also not effect his cricket career.

Seriously the Pakistanis probably think us non Pakistanis come here for the cricket, its mostly for the entertainment. Endless twists and turns.

PCB asked ACU to contact Sharjeel Khan.

He's in panic mode

Should have contacted pcb first

Let them put out a press release and left it there.

Poor guy. I know how it feels tbh. Hope this mess gets sorted out and he can focus on his cricket

Ikr from the president being involved in cricket to players disappearing to players getting blackmail.. Pakistan cricket is pure entertainment best team in the world in terms of entertainment

An innocent man does not have secrets to hide

From the video it seems that he might be upto something which he now wants to cover!

If it is fake what is the need to react at all?

If there is something to hide he should've informed the relevant authorities and leave it at that and not make it public himself.

Its quite evident that the aleged fake video is not of personal nature , given the history of pakistan cricketers i pray that things are alright.

Why so scared if you don't have skeletons in your closet? The guys hasn't kidnapped you for money!

Easy to talk while sitting on the computer, but we all commit mistakes and stuff behind closed doors.

Look whatever he did, he didn't intend to do it publicly, nor was that thing suppose to come into public aswell

WHo knows, the blackmailer could had also hacked his laptop or phones camera and recorded him doing something.

Hopefully, this gets sorted out soon.
But, Sharjeel should have contacted PCB's vigilante department and not taken matters into his own hands.
Now, everyone will speculate.

True that we all do make mistakes, but not such mistakes where others start blackmailing you and threaten you to ashamed you in public.

So again, if it's not a 'bad mistake', then why does he look nervous and panic?

Look whatever he did, he didn't intend to do it publicly, nor was that thing suppose to come into public aswell

And by this logic, Umar Akmal should've all the liberty to do whatever he does in his life and that dance party episode (where all the eyewitness and evidences were vanished and Police changed its stance and gave him clean slate) shouldn't come in public too.

You don't do anything in your private life which you wouldn't want the public seeing? He could have easily been hacked for all we know.

Probably over reaction - there are so many jerks around in our part of world that, if any celebrity contact number is leaked, you can expect few such calls.

This happens because SIM card is not registered purposefully there & in many cases, there is no authenticated database either for Mobile operators. Besides, South Asia is predominantly prepaid market, whose contact details often can't be verified & there is frequent change of ownership & it's very cheap. Anywhere in IND, BD or PAK; someone can buy a loose SIM from retail with fake documents, make few calls from the free minutes offered & throw it to the garbage bin - it costs often less than 1$. GPS tracking doesn't work if the SIM is out of device, while call tracking also not possible because it's based on BTS (base transceiver station) location - someone living next to his house at Hyderabad can make the calls from Karachi & disconnect the SIM from device - his last call address is recorded as Karachi for police to search. At highest level, FBI or RCP has a database of individual voice, therefore in National security issues, they might match the voice with their data base, but it's probably like searching a needle in Thar desert for PAK Police.

Other possibility (if the video does exist), could be a bit uncomfortable for PAK cricket. I think, if there is anything in that video, related to his personal life (relationship, party-picture ......), he might have gone straight to PCB/Police & report it - he doesn't need to be afraid of PCB or Police for his personal life, apart from preserving image. It could be, I am not accusing, that the picture was taken/recorded with him interacting/dealing with suspicious characters, that he doesn't want to disclose.

Of course, it can be another issue of ghost or pill, depending on his IQ level; but unlikely.

Think the good news is that he cannot be blackmailed into anything corrupt. Its out in the open.

If there is embarrassment then so be it - that's his cross to bear - we don't need to make any moral judgement.

Pakistan has a system for mobile registration.

Anyway on the topic: So glad and proud of Sharjeel and his courage. It takes a real man to come up in the face of adversity and say something like that which can risk his career and all that.

Good on you Sharjeel and don't let the detractors hurt you.

I also want PCB to come up with a policy like that to help eliminate other such incidents.

Thank Goodness, for the biometric authentication process introduced by the telcos, unless the black mailer was using satellite phone, he could be traced. Atleast the identity, unless he was using a stolen phone.

Looks like some more detail so the 200,000 is just the start it seems....

Karachi: Pakistani opener, Sharjeel Khan has claimed that some unknown persons were trying to blackmail him by demanding money for not releasing videos of him which could harm his reputation. Police in Sharjeel’s hometown Hyderabad visited his residence and spoke to his father to inquire about the matter but a senior official said the family had not filed any official complaint as yet with them. “No official complaint has been made by them as yet with us so we can’t move forward. But we are confident that if they make a complaint we can get to the bottom of the matter in a few hours,” the official said.

Sharjeel, a swashbuckling left hander who played in the recent Asia Cup and World T20 events, said in a video message posted on his facebook page that he wanted to inform his fans that some people were trying to blackmail him. “I just wanted to let you know some people have called me and threatened me they would release some videos of me if I don’t pay them 200,000 rupees. I just want to tell my fans these videos are tampered and I am in no way involved in anything,” Sharjeel said. PCB consider sending Pakistan team to Hampshire for training before England tour

He said the unidentified persons had said they would increase the money by one lakh rupees a day until he didn’t pay them. His father, Sohail Khan told the media that he had informed the police about the matter but said since the calls came from an unknown caller they couldn’t provide the number. “It is a ploy to blackmail us and I am confident my son is not involved in anything wrong,” he said.
But he brushed aside a question whether his son had brought the matter to the notice of the Pakistan Cricket Board vigilance and anti-corruption and security cell. Sharjeel, 26, has played 11 one-day internationals and 11 T20 matches for his country and was the only century maker in the inaugural Pakistan Super League held in February in the UAE. Pakistani players appear to be caught up in a storm of controversies in recent months and more recently chief selector, Inzamam-ul-Haq didn’t include batsmen, Ahmed Shehzad and Umar Akmal in the training camp for the tour to England.

What is in that video that he finds so threatening?

How did he get himself into this position?

Pakistan has a very tight registration system and things have gotten better since 16/12

Sharjeel should have avoided posting that video on facebook. This is his personal life so should have sorted it behind the closed door. Poor stuff from sharjeel this. Inform the police and let them do it instead of posting it on facebook.

How to take the claims of the pcb that all players are trained on media matters. But then again Sharjeel can point to Afridi's non apology after the world cup. There are few things that are worth agreeing with from Inti but I suppose he was right about the players being ********.

Its nothing serious from the looks of it. He says he's been receiving threats "since quite a few days", and so far possibly did not give a damn (paid no money, informed no one)

He's probably been informed by the fake caller that I'm uploading the video, in reaction to which Sharjeel decided to forewarn his fans "if anything comes up, its fake"

Doesn't look "scared" one bit. Mountain of a molehill, how I see it

I agree with you mostly but this is something that is a smart move.

The people threatened him that his video will be posted on social media to defame him and he took the first step. Takes courage.

It looks like the video is related to his involvement with something wrong.

Either Sharjeel should have complained with police and PCB and stayed quite or should have talked about the kind of video as well.
Anyways, i am more intrigued by the video now, hopefully we will get to see it soon. Thats the only way this issue will go doen, by viewers to decide if something is wrong with it and if it is tempered with.

Weird stuff this.

What sort of people would be depraved enough to do this sort of thing.

Thanks to you all for the information regarding "Mobile subscriber's TIGHT registration process" in Pakistan. You guys must be living in Pakistan recently, therefore well aware of the recent development. I have left South Asia about 2 years back, and at that time, from my profession, I had a little bit of knowledge about the then, process & Bio-metric registration system in Pakistan or South Asia, for that both Mobilink & Telenor has operation in BD & Telenor in India; therefore my post was based on 2014 ..... things must have changed since then, because as far I can recall, Bin Laden, lived almost half a decade with his full family & team, about 2 KM from PAK MA before US Marines caught him - may be they didn't use mobile phone for 5 years.

did you live in Pakistan or you basing it off your experience in India and Bangladesh? Cause these are 3 different countries.

Relax, there is enough clue in my post. It's a bit more than based on "experience".

Only if its related to cricket.

That is boring, who wants to hear about that ? If it is a video of him talking smack about Afridi, Misbah or the Akmal Dyansty then it is a dud. I want something entertaining, exciting, I need that dopamine rush.

Everyone's speculating what Sharjeel did or didn't do yet no one realizes that this man's personal space has been violated. I don't really care what's in the video, or whether it's fake or not, violating his personal space is not cool at all.

Damn feel bad for him, whatever it is I hope the police catch the culprits before it gets out of hand.

Chor ki darhi main tinka.. How does he know what the vids are of/ if they're fake? Obviously he knows what he's gotten up to and is now paying the price for it

Hope it is a dud we don't need any controversy atm

exactly. Pakistanis are the first ones to throw their players in the pit as well as the first ones to hype them over the moon, whether on the field or off the field.

Something definitely "off" about this story. Why didn't he file a Police report if he was that worried?

Definitely something 'fishy' about this. The way Sharjeel has reacted suggests that this video isn't fabricated.

If someone violated your personal space and took a video of you without you knowing, AND threatened to share it with the world, would you not be tripping out?

Sharjeel seems worried, so it means the videos may have something that could harm him.

In Pakistan a lot of things can harm your reputation. It could be him drinking alcohol openly, or with a girl. It could also be him talking about fixing or something like that. It could even be as small as him making racist comments or using bad language.

Any of these things would effect his chances of getting selected given he is a new player.

Hopefully he comes out okay.

Hopefully the culprits are caught and he comes out of this whole fiasco OK. Things like this can be very damaging from a psychological point of view.
