What's new

Sheer frustration and pain....

The 2007 WC dragged on and on and on. It was a truly dreadful advert for cricket - whatever the excuses they have lined up. There is no glossing over what might be the worst sporting event I can ever remember.

I don't just think 50 over WC should be scrapped, I think 50 over cricket should be scrapped full stop. Test and First class cricket as the pinnacle supported by T20 cricket, this is my opinion.

I can understand your point and I do think ODI cricket will get scrapped at some point in the future. But I think any version of the game that's very short and volatile gives rise to upsets and you don't always have the better team winning.

Test cricket is like a grandslam tennis match. ODI cricket is like having a 3 set match. T20 cricket is like having a game with just one set. It might be short, but you'll also have a lot of upsets happening, whereas the better player will almost always prevail in the grandslam match (upsets do happen, but it would not be as frequent as in a match with just one set).

Really felt this was a golden chance. The whole vibe and atmosphere was perfect throughout the tournament.

Missed opportunity and unlikely we will get a chance to win a WC for a long time.

Hey, I sympathise. Watched England lose the 1983 WC semi, 1987 final and 1992 final. Took 29 more years to win the thing.

Great analogy with the tennis. I would go so far as to say.

Test cricket = Grand Slam, almost always the best player wins the tournament.
ODIs = 1 Set
T20s = Tie Breaker

However in both cases I see no reason to play the 1 set match or the ODIs.

Then why the tiebreakers then?

Why are you guys giving 'Him' time of the day...he has zero analytical skills.

Is 2007 forgotten?

A WC is WC.

I barely even remembered it till you mentioned it and even then Misbah is bashed for his Mohali nonsense than 2007. I didn't even know Windies had won it twice till I read it on BBC.

Its a joke of a trophy for hits and giggles with so many average players who'd never make it beyond one tournament. 50/60 over ODIs from 83 are still talked about today, 92 shaped our entire generation and legacy of so many of our legends. 96 changed Sri Lankan cricket. Imran, the amazing cricketer he was, is for the most part remembered for 92. Compare that to 2009, I struggled to even remember who captained us and I actually went and saw our team play live at the grounds during the tournament!

THAT'S what a real WC means. These T20 WCs hurt but almost all serious cricket fans forget about it as noone cares at all. Pakistan can lose 10 T20 finals to India if we could have won in 1996, or 2011 in India.

To each to their own I suppose.

I didn't think Pakistan would qualify for the semi-finals, so for me their performance was above expectations.

The way they hammered India and then went unbeaten in the group was superb.

However when I saw that Australia was the opposition in the semi-final, I had a feeling that somehow they would manage to edge out Pakistan.

Lots of positives though to take forward.

I wish Ramiz would retain Hayden to instill an Australian ruthlessness in our team.

Cricket is not comparable to any other sports. No other sports runs for 5 straight days. You don't need a game to run for 5 straight days to make it a "pinnacle."

IMO best format is actually ODI because it is balanced between the longer original format and the short "entertaining" format. And from 2022, ODI will be back with Super League games followed by WC in 2023.

ODI is the best format but it’s not going to survive esp after two new balls nonsense.

Just accept T20s and wait for it to standardize.
I do think T20 should be just all night or just day matches though. day and night creates a lot of imbalance.

Ok without dew they lost when they bowling second .now just imagine if they were some dew, match would have end in 16-17 over itself.:ashwin

The match still would have ended around the same time, this is Pakistan bowling attack who can actually take wickets.
Unlike your team who lost by 10 wickets a billion cheers became a billion tears hahahahah

India 2007
Pakistan 2009
England 2010
West indies 2012
Sri Lanka 2014
West Indies 2016

Australia being a strong team never won the T20 cup. So strange!!!! They should get at least 2 of them. May be they didn't take T20 seriously.

This one was like the 2019 world cup reversed when it comes to India and Pakistan fortunes.

India played horrendously in the first two matches and then started praying for wild scenarios so they could qualify but it didn't happen

Pakistan put up a dominant performance in the group stages but got knocked out in the semis.

Then why the tiebreakers then?

Quite simple because we need a shorter format to bring in new crowds and have the glam and glitz. ODIs are a full day, T20s are 3 hours, maybe 3 and a half if it's a tight and long game. Most people can spare 3 hours most of the time. Most people cannot spare a full day as much.
