He is the best Indian batsman after Kohli in ODIs these days.
Kohli
Dhawan
Rohit
are the best 3 batsmen in Indian lineup. The rest of the batsmen are just riding the coat tails of the Big 3.

He is the best Indian batsman after Kohli in ODIs these days.
Went hiding during england tour and now back against minnows. Though a good odi player but after so many failures anyone will score century imo.
And South Africa and Pakistan as well.
On flat dead pitches. Watch him duck and run away from the likes of Steyn and Rabada but go after Junior Dala and Maharaj.
Won't be an exaggeration to say that he is the best ODI batsman in the world today. Yeah Kohli has monstrous stats but in 2015 WC and 2013/17 CT Dhawan was tremendous, a player for the occasion. People shouldn't mix formats, he is crap in tests and mediocre in T20s but a beast in 50 overs cricket.
He isn't underrated. This forum is always talking about how clutch he is .
Outside this forum. He is barely talked compared to Rohit and Kohli, even though he has been as good as them (and much better in tourneys). Dhawan has very few articles about him on media.
I think that's due to his performances in overseas countries in test matches. Had he performed in England he would have received a lot more hype.
He's highly rated in Asia.
Rohit is even worse in SENA tests though. I guess it's mostly because of Rohit's 3 double hundreds.

He got a 137 in WC 2015 against SA and was 2nd leading run scorer in SA ODI tour as well.
He is not a test material though but a fantastic ODI player.
Both had fat pitches. SA Odi pitches are different from their Test pitches.
Fat pitches:- Dunno
Flat pitches:- Yes but he got that hundred against top opposition in ICC tournament and the other big runs in their backyard. Also, his runs in that bilaterals series came on pitches which had bounce although natural unlike their other opener who went missing all through the series and scored once when the pitch was an Indian kind.

Pitch was pretty much easy if you would spend bit time on it. It was more of batsman friendly pitch in South Africa. Yes other opener went missing for whole series but in end he has same number of centuries to show as much as sharma. If sharma would have never played that test series i am sure he would have scored 2 centuries atleast in odi series. He won't score 30s and 40s most of the time. Also runs against South Africa in icc tournament matters as much as any minnow side. Even bangladesh can beat them on most day. Though no doubt Dhawan is best indian batsman in icc events even ahead of kohli.
I am only talking about ODIs here.
In ICC tournaments also, Bangladesh won't have defeated SA anyhow. SA did won against West Indies and Sri Lanka during WC 2015 and even CT 2017. So, no Bangladesh won't necessary have defeated SA and even if they would, it doesn't change the fact that scoring against SA is a much bigger deal than scoring against Bangladesh.
Now coming to that SA ODI series, Dhawan got two fifties as well apart from the hundred and his 63 ball 76 was a really high quality attack, particularly coming after Rabada knocking Rohit at 0 in that match. He made sure that momentum remains with India only.
Dhawan is not just India's best batsmen in ICC tournaments but also second best batsmen in India team in ODI cricket. Rohit is third best.
Then what about dhawan's struggle in 2015 south africa series in india? where Morkel, Steyn and Rabada didn't allow him to score at all? Rohit had two centuries on that tour too. I won't compare both with performance against south africa. Yes performance in ICC tournament is valid comparison where even rohit scored 137 in knock out match? Yes against Bangladesh but what was situation? Dhawan and Kohli were lost early. Rahane went and i remember it was like 110-120 in 30 overs and in end we scored 300+ so obviously performing in that situation matters too. When we got good start against Australia dhawan threw his wicket for no reason (Yes aussies looked in bit pressure that time) and after that partnership we never came back in game. In ICC tournaments there is no doubt dhawan is probably best batsman along with gambhir & yuvi for india in last 15 years.
He was out of form back then. Performing away from home is always far more challenging than performing at home. Anyone can score runs at home, what is really a big deal??
Again, you are bringing that Bangladesh performance. It was a quality inning but as I said, performing against SA is bigger than performing against BD.
In WC 2015, Dhawan absolutely outperformed Rohit. Its not even up for debate. Dhawan missed out on big score against Australia but to his credit he gave a fantastic start to the run-chase upfront but eventually he was up against some really high quality bowling and huge pressure which eventually did it to him.
Even the very greatest players won't have got a hundred against that attack in Australia in a high pressure WC semi final with 320 already on board. To his credit, he had already played couple of fantastic knocks against Pakistan and SA in the World Cup league matches. Rohit, in contrast, played one great knock against BD but did nothing outside that.
Their stats are similar but Dhawan's performance is better in testing conditions than Sharma as well as also has better performance in ICC tournaments. So, he is ahead of Sharma as India's 2nd best batsmen after Kohli.

In today's world of odi & t20 cricket there is nothing like home and overseas. Conditions are almost similar everywhere lol. Don't tell me it was seaming and swinging in africa and dhawan scored runs while rohit got flat highway and he scored 1 hundred in that match.
Performing against SA is bigger than performing against BD.
If we would have lost that match then we could have been out of worldcup like 2007. Also against south africa he got run out. So his failure was against pakistan. Other than that he scored like two half centuries and century so not really outperformed by big margin imo.
Dhawan's performance is better in testing conditions.
You must be kidding yourself not even me if you are saying in odis you get testing conditions. In ICC i do agree he is way ahead of rohit and bit of kohli. Dhawan only has to perform to win the worldcup and will be considered as ATG till end of career.
But i still won't consider these Hacks are better than old generation players who faced much more tougher conditions. These two ball theory is helping today's openers alot. No swing in first few overs nor reverse swing. Pitch is absolute highway in most parts and rules are favored for batsman as if bowlers have done huge crime in past.
I think Dhawan is underrated because of Rohit, who hogs all attention as opener. As clutch as Dhawan is, Rohit is one of a kind LOI batsman and close to ABD in pure talent. In form Rohit makes Kohli look passive regularly. There are tons of batsmen with grrat tourney records, but Rohit has several world records which can't be replicated by anybody else in current era.
Come on What has Rohit or Kohli got to do with Dhawan? When people talk about Kohli or Rohit they always mention Dhawan but dhawan himself has disappointed most time. This series he didn't score big till last match which i agree you can have such series but when yesterday he had chance to finish match and get secured win he wasted last 3 balls and got out leaving other batsman to score 1 of 1 ball. Now in same situation Kohli or Rohit would easily finish the match and be not out. Dhawan since debut hasn't progressed like Kohli or Rohit has. His avg is around 45 since debut while Kohli has gone high from around 50 to 59 and Rohit from 28 to 48 almost. But again He has outscored Kohli & Rohit in ICC events not by much but still that's reason he is called better Clutch player even though he hasn't really played any great inning in knockout stage.
Another failure for Dhawan.... this time just 1 runs
Shikhar Dhawan c Roy b Topley 1(3) - 13/1 in 2.1 ov.
Enjoying himself in the West Indies
64* at the moment
Should India replace Dhawan with Gill keeping the 2023 ODI World Cup in mind?
Rohit and Kohli will play irrespective of form. But is Dhawan a sureshot? Dhawan is slightly more consistent ( he also has problem of scoring big knocks) but Gill is more free flowing and natural talent of the two.
Ditch Rohit, it's clear he isn't the same beast from 2019 anymore. Dhawan can still score decent paced 50s every then and now, he makes up for a failure in the next match. Rohit has been worse than Virat Kohli in ODIs since 2020.
Rohit shouldn't be part of any LOI squad, let alone be captain
India batter announces retirement from all cricket
India batter Shikhar Dhawan has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket on Saturday, 24 August.
The southpaw took to social media to convey the heartfelt decision. The 38-year-old's international career spanned over 12 years with him featuring in 34 Tests, 167 ODIs and 68 T20Is, scoring 10,867 runs.
On a video posted on his social media account, Dhawan said, "I am standing at that juncture in my life where I can only see the memories. My dream was always to play for India and it came true and for that I'm grateful to a lot of people. My family, my coaches Tarak Sinha and Madan Sharma, under whom I learnt to play cricket. Also my team with whom I played for years. I got another family in them. I got fame and fortune and the love of everyone.
"But it's important to turn the page to move forward in life and that's why I am announcing my retirement from international and domestic cricket.
And now that I'm concluding my cricket journey, there's peace in my heart, that I played a lot for my country. I'm grateful to all my fans for all the love. I've told myself don't feel sad that you won't play for India anymore, but feel happy that you played for the country."

It didn't get disturbed by Gill? Dhawan was a spent force and should have retired after wc 2019.What a dominant and formidable opening pair he formed with Rohit Sharma.
To this day, I struggle to see why this opening pair was disturbed with the likes of Gill, Shaw and whoever else came.
He's extremely extremely underrated.A truly special player who made his name despite all the focus being towards the other two stalwarts in Indian top 3.
The man of ICC tournaments, Dhawan was superb in pretty much all ODI tournaments, and was player of series in CT 2013.
He was a decent test batsman too but the pitches on which India played made it hard for him to establish himself as a highly successful test batsman. Nevertheless, a great ODI opener for India.
