Just watching Game On Hai, according to Shoaib Akhtar, Wasim 'bhai' had contacted him and requested him to become the Head Coach and Chief Selector of the U-19 team and maybe later the A team. Shoaib said he had more or less accepted the offer and had even recommended the name of 2-3 other big name super star players he played with on his team.

I doubt Wasim Akram has the power to do that. Maybe Shoaib meant Wasim Khan?

I thought I definitely heard Leicesthire before Wasim, but regardless will be a fascinating appointment and the first time a high profile player went anywhere near the U-19 and A team.

Shoaib could certainly teach young kids about the value of performance enhancement and hyperflexion

Oddly enough, I for one believe Shoaib Akhtar would be a thousand times better coach than Inzi, Miandad, Yousuf, Wasim, Waqar. U-19 would be a good start.

So, finally they are getting rid of Basit Ali. Mohammad Yousaf should be appointed as the batting coach. Shoaib Akhtar can be more of a mentor than a proper selector or coach.

Great speedster but also the biggest drama queen/diva in the circuit.

If the reference is to Wasim Akram, then presumably Wasim as one of the members of the cricket committee will put his name forward... If this isn't all made up.

:)) Just saw the clip. Clearly made up.

Interesting news.

Unless this of course is a case of:

Not sure if it’s true - too many grey area in the plot, but I actually do think that it’s s good idea, if true.

They say - don’t fix something not broken yet. Opposite is also true - have to change if something is not working. This Basit Ali model isn’t working; it needs to be changed and one can hope that change can bring positives.

Shoaib as CS (more than coach - for fast bowlers, I think more than coaching at junior level you need to identify ideal foils to work on), MoYo as batting coach & may be Saqlin as spin coach/selector ..... not bad.

This is where the legends should be focusing their energies on, i.e. Domestic Cricket, NCA, U-19 and A teams. Perfect way to give back to the country. Not on the national team where they automatically get the same limelight that they enjoyed during their playing days.

I'm not so sure Shoaib is the guy that Pak fans would want their u-19 talent to be led by, or even exposed to.

I think Akhtar has fantasies of being the big shot that "gives" Pakistan 4-5 talented "youngsters". He's got a massive hero complex and I doubt that his particular set of skills are really transferrable. He has hyper-extension in his joints and his choices in terms of physical fitness weren't the best ones. Not to mention his off-the-field 'issues' that the PCB infamously made public.

You want knowledgeable guys who are happy to remain in the background and away from the spotlight - that's the type of mentor and coach you want for your crown-jewels of talent - which is what your top u19 prospects are.

So bad news for Pak cricket if true.

These claims of Akhtar being a bad influence on Pakistani youngsters are over blown, people are still thinking of him as the same individual when he was playing for Pakistan as a player. He is a different individual now.

No one in the Lahore Qalandar set up complained about his attitude or hero complex. Sometimes people need to be given responsibility to get the best out of them.

I feel he is a good option. He is an ex-player, many Pakistani aspiring fast bowlers look upto or try to emulate him. Wasim Akram is too busy, Waqar's ego is too big to allow him to coach U19, Imran Khan is our PM and Asif is tainted.

This leaves this last superstar so if he is willing then avail this opportunity.

since we are just naming names lets add miandad and saleem malik in there as well.

Waqar's ego is too big.... but "this last superstar..." mmmk

That’s true for batting - it’s much more technical, methodical & process oriented skills that you develop under proper coaches. Fast bowling needs mentors, someone that inspires you. Obviously there is technical aspects & conditioning, but for a genuine 18 years old PAK kid, Shoaib Akhtar is an aspiring figure. I have mentioned MoYo & Saq in that post as coaches.

Also, I am sure if he is honest & willing, Shoaib can prepare himself for the role - Kapil was a failure as Indian coach, not because he was unqualified or didn’t know the tricks; rather he took that another status in his illustrious resume - didn’t walk the talk to learn this trait. Inzamam is doing the same as CS. Coaching, scouting is a sort of thanks less but tough job, you need to have passion for it.

If Shoaib is mentally ready to listen, learn & deliver - he can definitely do it; because his status as a superstar is given to inspire the kids.

Wasnt he a superstar as bowler?

i dunno what that means as its a subjective term. he missed half the tests that pakistan played during the entire time he was active. and the rest is pretty well documented. if thats what makes a superstar, sure.

Super stars get commercials and advertisements. Afridi and Akhtar during their careers easily dominated that aspect over everyone else in the team.

so, basically nothing to do with coaching credentials which is what this thread is about?

Wasim Akram would not have the authority to give Shoaib Akhtar a role at PCB.

Sometimes I wonder what planet some of our former players are on.

The Cricket Committee is a recommendory body, it is up to the discretion of the PCB Chairman on what to accept and what to reject. Maybe Wasim has been in discussions behind the scenes and they may have given verbal consent to his suggestions with final approval as a formality.

Shoaib can be such as good motivator for any team.He has got an aura about him

Would be a brilliant news, if true.

His technical analysis during Hindi commentary has been very indepth. Shami and Bumrah took tips from him when they were early in their careers when he was traveling with the team as a commentator, and one of them (don't remember which) credited Shoaib's input for marked improvement in their performance.

Plus, he has the passion for the game, something very rarely found among our former players, which would mean he'd be a lot more involved in helping youngsters than a random ex-cricketer/administrator normally appointed by PCB on ad-hoc basis

Is He still Mentor of Lahore Qalandars ?

If Yes than why he wasn't in the team dug out ?

If He is with LQ still than hope he works with Rauf and guides him to become better.

I saw him with KK owner in the match yesterday talking to him seriously when the owner was enjoying the wickets tumbling moments for LQ...
