Shoaib Malik ruled out from T20I series against New Zealand

Wellington - 20 January, 2018: Pakistan Tour Management Committee, consisting of Team Manager, Talat Ali, Head Coach, Mickey Arthur and Captain, Sarfraz Ahmed, held a meeting with Pakistan Team Physiotherapist, Vib Singh and Shoaib Malik to discuss his participation in the upcoming 3 match T20I series against New Zealand starting from 22 January.

The committee reviewed the expert advice it received from the top medical consultants in New Zealand after conducting all necessary medical tests of Shoaib Malik has decided, after briefing PCB management, to send him back from New Zealand. The committee was of the opinion that it should give him the best chance to recuperate from the symptoms of the delayed concussion he is currently showing.

"Shoaib Malik suffered a delayed concussion, when he was hit on the head by a wayward throw during the ODI in Hamilton. He has been making good progress since suffering the delayed concussion and is showing daily signs of improvement. He has been advised to rest a minimum of seven to ten days for the concussion to resolve. The decision was made to give him the best chance to continue aiding his prognosis and that he should return home to recover in a familiar and comfortable environment", said Pakistan Team Physiotherapist, Vib Singh.

The Tour Management Committee during the meeting also decided not to call up any replacement for Shoaib Malik for the T20I series.

Why not call up a replacement? A perfect chance to see what Talat or Maqsood could do .

A middle order of Babar,Harris,Sarfraz, and Hafeez isn't very exciting and will struggle to chase down 170 plus.

Replacement for collecting airmiles?

no point calling people when there is no chance to play

The reason they don't have a chance to play is because Pakistan is miles behind when it comes to playing the modern way.

Our current middle order is not suitable for t20 cricket.

Well I never liked his presence in the team but the way he is going out is more disconcerting for most Pakistani fans.

Wish him speedy recovery, hope he get well soon and continues his treatment. His focus now should be preparing for the PSL which is still a month away.

Wanted him dropped but obviously not in these circumstances.

Would've called up a replacement though as we badly lack powerhitters compared to NZ ahead of this T20 series.

I disagree Pakistan still has a chance. Logistics wise a replacement is now difficult as I doubt anyone would be able travel to New Zealand inthe timeframe the T20 series in underway. Any replacement would take time to adapt the bounce in the wicket there. I still have hope some of our lower middle order can do some work in the middle order and play some good cricket. For modern cricket we need more work, more ODI tours to NZ and Australia both national and second string teams like A side which is not the priority of the board right now. They are more content with T20s in UAE.

Fakhar
Mukhtar
Babar
Sarfraz
Hafeez
Shadab
Yamin
Faheem
Hasan
Nawaz
Amir

Not a bad line up. Imad will be missed.
Don't want Hafeez but it's likely that he'll play. Talat and Agha should have been there.

Nice line-up and nice username BlueDoritos :)

Management is right in not calling a replacement. The poor guy would have missed out either way by being benched or thrown into the deep end in hindsight.

In my opinion, they want to fully test this squad to filter out the best and hopefully move on from there.
I can see Aamer yamin solidifying his spot and also Nawaz may just find his feet finally if only he plays all three games.
Haaris Sohail will play these games which may help him improve his power hitting somewhat for the 50 over format but I don't see him being retained after this series.
Umar Amin's case is a curious one. His feet went nowhere on his dismissal but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt as it was his first game. However, I don't see him in the squad for too long.

Sarfaraz should open the innings with Fakhar Zaman followed by,
Babar Azam
Haris Sohail
Hafeez
U Amin
Shadab
Fahim
Yamin
Nawaz
Hasan Ali.

No need to send a replacement even Shahzad will be warming the bench.

Team management knows the chief selector Inzamam more than anyone
Was just thinking
IF there ever was a consideration for replacement
Arthur could predict whom Inzi would be sending from the broad pool of domestic players [3 people] in the batting department from Akmal family to Salman Butt.

So they thought its best not to ask the selector anything at all.

We will lose the T20s when Babar, Haris and Hafeez are batting.... no other team has such batsmen in their T20 sides.

The 2 u mentioned can't be dropped and the third [Harris Sohail] has poor fitness and weight issues, guy can't rotate strike. We should have realistic expectations, if our bowling fires we might have a good game otherwise hope for something extraordinary like what Shadab did in the odis.

I'm just missing the time when Sharjeel and Latif blasted the English to all part and onko nani yaad dila di thi

Woh bhi kya din thay..... now we only have Fakhar Zaman as our only T20 standard batsman

Pakistan are a very good t20 side and havent lost a series in almost 2 years I think. They outplayed a very good world XI side and did so quite easily.

The team is a bit unbalanced without Imad but they can easily play Nawaz or any other second spinner. In fact, 3 spinners would be better (with Harris).

I'd go for:

Zaman
Shehzad
Babar
Harris
Hafeez
Harris
Shadab
Faheem
Nawaz
Amir/Raees
Hasan

You are playing 2 Harris(you must have meant Sarfraz) when even 1 shouldn't. He sure is a exceptional player in Tests and ODIs but I am not so sure about T20 cricket.

Latif was a pure hack who rarely fired, but yeah Sharjeel was special and is badly missed nowadays.

We can try Fakhar and Faheem as our T20I openers and maybe they can bring back that day every now and then, these 2 are very good hitters and I am sure when on song will be brutal in the first six overs.

Could have used Umar Akmal there

OMG get over that hack....

Never seen a garbage batsman hyped up so much... 9-10 years of continuous failure isn't enough for you guys to realize that cricket is not for him?

Coming back to Malik.

If his injury is so bad then why the hell was he allowed to bat on? There is a case for medical negligence to be answered here.

He is good for bang bang out cricket.

Seems like a political reason to keep him off-series.

His injury certainly looked bad, but the delayed concussion is something different. Usually signs of concussion starts within minutes of hours. You get symptoms of 24 hours later in delayed type. What was mind boggling was how he was told to continue batting. No one in their right mind would have let someone bat after such a nasty strike. You usually get a period of shock where you get amnesia about the event that happens and you deny anything bad has happened to you. It was probably what Malik was saying back then, I am fine let me continue.(Something all lion hearted athletes would do but shouldn't). It's the doctor's job of telling him to retire hurt. I dont think there is even an on-tour doctor in the management. It was like MMA fighters getting knocked out for a few minutes.
But that's what happens when you have physio doing the dual job of physiotherapist and a physician.
Even back in NCA, there are simple M.B.B.S doctors or ones with some sort of diploma which doesnt make you a certified doctor in Sports Medicine, but things like that happen in Pakistan and sadly will keep on happening.

Malik looks happy, his average didn't fall down further, Thanks to the prayers from his fans. He'll be back when it's Time to play Scotland and Zimbobs to boost average.
