Hamilton - 16 January, 2018: "While trying to take a run Shoaib Malik was hit on his head with a wayward throw. Shoaib was assessed on field by match doctor and myself. He did not have any symptoms of a concussion and was able to carry on playing. After getting out he was reassessed and was showing delayed concussion signs. He is doing well and is resting" said Pakistan Team Physiotherapist, Vib Singh. As advised by match doctor and Pakistan Team Physiotherapist, he will not be taking any further part in this match.

Can someone find the video of throw? It was not that hard as far as I remember. I hope for nothing serious.

He should have been taken off the field immediately

Incompetence of medical staff is stunning

Always wear a helmet.

Veteran Pakistan batsman Shoaib Malik got a jolting reminder of that cricketing rule when he was accidently cracked a nasty blow on the head by a Colin Munro throw during the fourth one-day international in Hamilton on Thursday.

In sickening scenes, Malik dived to get back in his crease just as Munro's flat throw came in, making a terrible thud as it hit him on the back of his head. Facing spinners Mitchell Santner and Kane Williamson at the time, Malik decided to bat without a helmet or even a cap.

He hit the ground and stayed down as New Zealand players showed their concern and he received medical attention. The ball flew for four overthrows, too, runs which were credited to Malik.

Eventually Malik rose to his feet, gave a reassuring smile and continued his innings. But he didn't stay around long, dismissed for six in the next over, bowled by Santner, when he holed out to long on.

Pakistan recovered to post 262-8 off their 50 overs with Mohammad Hafeez (81 off 80 balls) run out by Trent Boult off the last ball of the innings after taking 22 off the first five of Boult's over.

After being reassessed, he showed delayed concussion signs and was not asked to field, said Pakistan physiotherapist Vib Singh.

Any updates on his injury. hope he is doing well.. He should be given proper and complete rest, nevermind if he cannot take any part on the ongoing tour...

hope he gets better, need to make a rule that batsmen are required to wear helmets at all times, its for their own safety

One thing I have noticed in the bias of the kiwi commentators! A guy got hit flush on the head and the commentator is more bothered about the ball going for a 4! The kiwi commentators have been very annoying this series. Agreed that Pakistan have performed poorly but that doesnt mean you commentate as if NZ is playing BD or Ire.

The ball hit his head, went for four and now he is showing signs of concussion - what clearance is that?

That was not a good idea to continue.concussion usually takes time .ideally he should have been rested and evaluated.

Oh god, that looks bad. He should have been on observation instead of continuing the game....I hope there is nothing serious...

That looked bad when I saw it live. Hope he makes a full recovery.

He should take rest. One concussion increases chances of getting another quickly. Plus, CTE is a real thing.

Just seen the blow he got. Hope he is okay. Wouldn't risk him for a dead rubber game. Rest him for the next game.

This can hurt for a very long time if care is not taken properly... he should be rested out for the last game to see atleast what symptoms can develop, usually they are delayed

This looks scary. Why wasn't he wearing helmet or even cap

get well soon

Update from PCB

He traveled with the team to Wellington as planned. He is doing better.

No point risking him for a dead rubber, the series is already lost, might as well give someone on the bench a go

Mashallah he is feeling ok.

Makes you wonder just how brave batsmen were during pre helmet era circa 80s.

Yes, was hard. Luckily he got it more on the back side of the head where skull can be protective.

Huh?

Isn't getting hit on the back of the head like the worse possible place to get hit on the head?

Getting hit on the back (the occipital region) is the worst place to get hit on the head.

Not exactly, it can be fatal, but not as assured as getting hit on brain stem or cerebellum. Occipital Region can be bad if it gets the shock, but unlike stem there's a hard skull to protect it.

But again, it doesn't mean that it should be ignored or he should be playing. He should be under observation to see Occipital Region showing any damage signs. But since there's no vision alteration so far, its likely that he is going to be okay.

If this was Australia or England he would've been off the field immediately. It's too risky to keep him on the field.

The management needs to know better and get a new doctor.

Any word on how he's doing now?

This was the last update.

Still don't know if he'll play the last game.

Thank you for sharing that.

Wish him good health, and I hope he sits out just to be safe.
