Shoaib Malik : The most naturally gifted Pakistani batsman of recent times?

See Babar's and Harris' innings today.

Surely those with even below average intelligence should be able to draw the right conclusion.

Malik is the greatest Pakistani batsman since miandad. That triple hundred in Australia still lives in the memory. Straight driven six off brett Lee. Awesome shot.

I think his 267 vs south Africa was better then the aussie match ..remember he batted for 1and half day with tail ender to save the match ...those 4 sixes vs dale stern in bad light were just out of this world

If he was playing in this practice game he would have scored an unbeaten double hundred against these spinners.

My world cup team:-
1. Ahmed shehzad
2. Fakhar zaman
3. Asad shafiq/ babar azam
4. Shoaib malik (c)
5. Umar akmal
6. Harris sohail
7. Sarfaraz ahmed (wk)
8. Shahid afridi
9. Mohammad hafeez
10. Anwar ali
11. Mohammad irfan
12. Junaid khan
13. Zulfikar babar
14. Sadaf hussain/ sohail tanveer
15. Wahab riaz/imran khan

Looks great. Just drop Shafiq, he's not good enough to play a world cup in Australia.

Should be brought back as captain once Misbah calls it a day which i am presuming is the world cup. Hafeez doesn't want it and Malik has the experience for it and is willing to help the team build after the world cup as he mentioned in his last interview.

He has good chance of come back.

yeah why not Mian Malik has more talent than A.B devilliers. He should only be played at his desired position and PCB should immediately announce him as our Captain after Misbah.

Funny part is he is captaining ZTBL and still not coming at his desired position :))

Captaincy ruined his batting development. He was very good but took his spot for granted and suffered a substantial decline. Is always going to be a very good player of spin but he is a fisherman of the Yasir Hameed mould against any decent quick bowler.

Has depriciated to a level that now he doesn't have a salvage value atm he should be no way near the national side but Alas! they've named him in 30 probables

Yeah after misbah you could ask azhar ali to captain in tests and develop him but in one days no one has his place cemented so only shoaib can captain in one days.

I would say yes to shoaib malik and no to kamran akmal. Shoaib malik should take captaincy after misbah.

PML (M) trying their level best keep Malik alive in this forum but the majority is against the status-quo aka TTF's :91:

I agree he is the most gifted.

He was gifted a place in the team.

He was gifted the captaincy.

He was gifted the role of a batsman.

To answer OP - Yousuf is the most naturally gifted over the past 15 years. Nobody really comes close.

Believe it or not I was actually a die-hard Malik fan who thought he could do no wrong, he had the tools to become an ATG ODI all rounder. But slowly and surely I was noticing a decline, and I still to this day believe it was due to the dressing room environment and not his ability as evident from his domestic performances.

The day I realised he was finished was in the Zimbabwe series in 2011, I was depressed but had to accept he was done. I had renewed hope after his T20 exploits but then there was that review against Jadeja in the CT 2013. When a spinner, an Indian spinner, dismisses Malik in the manner that he did, it was the final nail in the coffin.

A combination of captaincy, and shuffling around the batting line up with a hint of inflated ego might have been the biggest reasons for his lacklustre returns.

Certainly, would have loved to have Malik instead of Afridi, we could have won soo many more games if Malik was in his place and treated the same way.

I also agree with this, many people need to understand that is was very like that Yousuf experienced prejudice due to his religion, so breaking into the team was doubly more difficult. His upbringing was modest,; I suggest people watch the video on YouTube about the 1999 India-Pakistan series, great documentary and I would advise to forward to 39:50 to see his Yousuf's background:

He would be the most talented player of last 16 years.

For last 15 years, it has to be Shobby and none else.

What a load of nonsense....naturally gifted batsman.

If he was so naturally gifted as the OP suggests he would have played 70 Tests by now.

There used to be a guy on PP a few years ago who thought Malik was the best Pak has ever produced, used to back it up with stats and everything, anyone remember his name? He had some real gems

BZ.

He prophesied that Malik would end up with a test average equal to that of Younis Khan. It would work out to be a 5 year 60+ average streak.

Can't for it to start.

Agreed.

When I think naturally gifted, he doesn't come to mind. He is a player who worked hard to get his technique to where it was, and he was an excellent player vs spin. But that's about it. He most often gave his wicket away fishing like Yasir Hameed as Poison stated above.

and his performances in pressure matches at ICC events especially the knocks against India in champions trophy and against Aussies in 2007 semi final.

So based on this innings an a couple of knocks against India, he's the most naturally gifted batsman? Dear me !

What next, Mohammad Sami was the most naturally gifted bowler of the last 15 years !

They were the stand out innings people dream to play one day. He needed more backing and proper batting slots.

Your odi team will be shahzad and hafeez opening, misbah and sarfaraz , so these 4 spots are confirmed but you have to fill 3 more batsman so shoaib malik has a chance.

One can only wonder now what it would have been like had Shobby been in the side.

The truth, to be honest, is that Malik>Younis, if only he was allowed to flourish. All stats back that, from caught behind stats to opening ones!

There is javid miadad or inzimam in the side who could replace malik easily and he also bowls that adds to it also.

Malik trolls out in full force. He wasn't a Test batsman even during his LOI peak 2003-2008.

Batting all day against Muralitharan in 2006 at SSC is the one and only highlight of his sorry Test career.

If he could play on these surfaces, he would have 20 hundreds by now.

S better batsman than Sachin, a better captain than Imran and a better spinner than Warne.

You wanna chase 300, Malik, Shehzad, Babar Azam & Haris are the only 4 batsman capable of understanding the situation and having the ability to pull it off.

Malik of 2005-2008? Yes
Current? LOL

By the way what is his contribution in past when Pakistan was chasing 300 target?

Basically this.

Also, add Afridi to that list.

He Scored runs and took wicket in england playing for warwickshire, in australia for hobart, in pakistan for ZTBL, in clt-20 for hobart.

Malik is the most suitable replacement for Hafeez in my opinion.

Has plenty to offer if he could reignite some fire in his belly and go back to the 2004-2008 mold. No reason why he can't, he's been doing it day in day out at every level barring international.

Yes he has been diabolical in the last 5 years, but he is also a proven operator at this level so it won't be a bad or a questionable decision to give him another ago.

Even though harris bowled well, you still need malik as 5th bowler and harris should be 6th.

Just a matter of time I guess. He seems like an improved pro at least in leagues.

Forget now Shoaib Malik is not interested in playing ODI WC due to reasons that is highly reasonable. :mv

Should be captain after WC. The best player to groom young players, will remove the tuk tuk mentality as he himself is an aggressive and inspired captain. Many big domestic T20 teams want his services every year for a reason, this guy is the reason Sialkot Stallions have been so consistent and we have only him to thank for the development of Raza Hasan and Haris Sohail.

he was such as good/great player before the ugly encounters with Pakistan politics with the likes of Younis, Yousuf, Afridi etc., but he still has it as evident by his beastly domestic performances. His recent interview was so selfless and the fact he mentioned the young performing players we need to win the WC show that he knows the game clearly.
