What's new

Shoaib Malik : The most naturally gifted Pakistani batsman of recent times?

Once again you are having trouble following a logical train of thought.

1. I never disparaged the innings. I disparaged the notion that this innings had silenced his critics. Can you appreciate the difference?

2. Then I pointed out an innings that could go a long way in silencing the naysayers.

If you can't see things in the context of the thread, we will be going around in circles.

I'm not taking things to heart. I'm just clearing up any ambiguity that I care very little for your "ambush" posting style.

Ambush posting style :91:

You really do see some weird things. For what it's worth I don't consider Malik a great player on the basis of a run of form, I said before the World cup that he should be in the squad. Not because he is a particularly great player, just that he was a better ODI player than Younis Khan and players of his ilk. Good fielder, can consolidate, rotate strike and can hit big as well. I'm sure there might be bigger and better talents out there, but I can only comment on what I have seen.

Oh look you've added a smiley just in case people didn't realise you were being witty.

sorry but he did score 150. You need to stop hating the legend. Great innings. Pity you missed another one miandadrules. Im starting to doubt your Malik fan credentials.

If I watched every great knock I wouldn't have enough time for work.

Lol miandadrules and the khan and Malik's mysterious knocks a better love story than twilight..:p

Well done, you managed to focus on the smiley rather than the points raised. :14:

Your points had little relevance to the point at hand. Which was the significance of his innings today.

Another smiley. Very considerate of you to think for all those that couldn't pick up your wit from the text.

Well watch it before making disparaging remarks. Only two Pakistani batsmen actually looked like batsmen out there today, Shoiab and Rizwan were comfortably the best out there today against some disciplined and tight SL bowling.

Agreed. The rest of our bats looked way out of depth and out of ideas as to what they should do against a wicket to wicket spin attack.

Sad to see hatred making people hate on their own performing countrymen. No such thing as credit where its due on PP.

For Pakistan to continue to be successful in odi's they need an inform malik holding the middle order together.

@freelance-cricketer his average is also increasing day by day and it will be 35 in sha allah by the end of this year

Not bad for a Pakistani, actually. Personally though i feel he could be a 40+ match winning player.

getting to 40 is very difficult but realistically speaking he should reach 36-37 by the end of his career
can u tell me what was his average till that champions trophy match against india in 2009

At the position he is batting I expect him to get a lot of not outs so his avg will increase but 40 is a long shot. But what I am really liking is his strike rate. He strike rate is 1.30 despite not hitting many boundaries shows the value of singles on the strike rate. He rarely plays a dot ball just keeps taking singles and then gets a boundary or 2.

Which is just what ODI batting is all about, a much needed relief and a permanent break from the Misbah ul Haq era.

yes thats excellent he keeps the scoreboard busy unlike misbah ul haq who used to consume hell lot of deliviries

The best batsman as well as bowler in Pak team currently.

I am not too sure about his performances against good teams. He hasn't done well against good bowling attacks

^

Not quite yet. But he is pretty good for Pakistani standards.

What is so special about Shoaib Malik's game that he has these huge threads :sanga ?

There are atleast 60-70 better ODI players than him right now.
freelance_cricketer our Nagaland Ranji team has 3-4 better batsmen than damad ji.Why are you so obsessed with him ?

Sangakarra should look up to legends like Malik who have set the bar really high.
Malik has spent more years playing cricket than Sangakarra, his ambition is higher than his. It is a testament to his ability to play cricket that he has outplayed sangakarra in all formats and played for a longer time as well.

We are blessed with the most talented cricketer of our generation.

It was a very good knock, made the pitch look easy.

Will be gutted not to get a 50-60 though, it was there for the taking.

I think he eventually benefitted from staying in the company of international tennis player. Sania must have inspired him to stay fit, its the fitness thats particularly stood out.

Cue the #ibleedgreen hashtags on twitter.
The chest thumping will go on for days now.

Although the thread title is flawed, but Malik, at the moment is doing what an experienced player making his comeback is supposed to do. Fitness wise, he looks younger than a 33 year old, which is good.

Though he is yet to be perform against quality opposition though or in difficult match situations.

Shoaib Malik is doing good I must say. He is looking like the most important & best batsman of the team.

Its true his all round abilities are unmatched. Sangakarra would struggle to fit in the same bracket as Malik
Hasn't he always performed when the team needed him the most.
In a career spanning more than 15 years. Its Malik who has always bailed us when the going got tough.

The best Pakistani player of spin I'm LOIs . Never loses his head or gets bogged down by good spin.

And an ATG against pace, seam, swing. Did you check out his average against top teams or overseas? Beats Tendulkar.

Poor sarcasm. Never claimed he was any good in foreign conditions/pitches or whatever. But i don't understand the hate that comes his way when compared to some in the side he's actually much better :afridi . Anyway if Malik fails in the next couple of series, i think he should be dropped for good. Not gonna last till 2019.

Going through the thread and shocked to see the PP legend Cpt. Rishwat in a war of words with miandadrules. The discussion itself wasnt shocking but i never expected any one to disrespect a sane, quality poster like captain.

He is a good man and a good team player. No big ego and good sense of giving interviews too. that may seem common thing but no so common when you talk about pakistani seniors.

i hope he leaves his mark when he retires.

You make a solid point btw. We are usually on umar's back when he does the same. Are some fans letting off malik because he has failed so much in the past that everything about him is celebrated?

However, miandad on the other hand cant deny that the innings was essential whatsoever the opposition.

That's subjective.

What's to say any of the other batsmen wouldn't also have settled in by facing the two weakest bowlers bowling innocuously and then gone on to capitalise.

The question should be, is this being classed as an essential innings because he didn't capitalise and hindered others from doing the same due to time constraints or because the opposition were that good?

Shobby saving Team Pakistan from embarrassment. This guy is the best cricketer in the team right now, without doubt and its about time haters give credit where long due.

Don't go anywhere boys.

Playing the inning of a life time here.

The way he has anchored the innings today is magnificent

rain comes to rescue miandadrules.:( only rain can stop Malik from this famous knock turning into math winning.

miandadrules was whining all the the time saying that shobby has failed under pressure every time. A perfect reply to him from shobby. But don't worry guys he will still find something to complain

I liked this today. Reminded me of Misbah, what he used to do in every match.

Appreciate such gutsy, collapse-stopping knocks.

But he has to do it against top teams as well, like Misbah used to do. Test awaits.

I like how he never seems to panic.; Still taking singles and doubles with Yasir.

:four

My goodness, what a cover drive under pressure.,

Shobby on 86*

Shoby 12 away from century.

Pakistan 37 away from win.

1 outstanding knock doesnot excuse 6 years on underperformance.

His last good knock that came under pressure was in a t20 game vs India in the 'Aanay Do' series. While chasing.

His last good knock in ODI (CT) came in 2009 vs India where he scored a 100.

This is essentially what Younis Khan did when he scored a 100 against Newzealand (Odi's) and secured his place for the World Cup 2015.

This is a good knock from Malik, but doesnot mean he is the best batsman in the world, like some are suggesting here.

He deserves a 100 today. He is hitting the boundaries at the right time. Some really good cover and square drives. Is a throwback to the Malik of the old.

Yes it's against Zimbabwe. But I don't think Hafeez could play this innings in his entire career. By way of comparison

Very good innings today. It was like Malik of 10 years old. He has failed in the last 6 years but he has made the most of his comeback in 2015 so far. Long may that continue.

Isn't Hafeez an opener? Doesn't he have a different role to what Malik has in the side.

I feel Hafeez's 75 of a 100 balls in the Asia Cup 2014 vs India was a decent knock and in a pressure situation.

So what. Never seen him finish a game. 75 off 100 is not a match turning performance. But I understand you are significantly invested emotionally against Malik. He has been poor for a while.
Having said that If I has to chose I would give more matches for a guy like Malik to be in form rather than glass chin pretenders like Hafeez.

I thought knocks against zimbabwe dont matter since zimbabwe is a minnow
Thats what everyone says when Hafeez performs against them :p

this guy is one of the greats. should be in serious consideration for the captaincy now
