Shock! Cricket is one of the top most BORING games according to a survey!

How exactly is Darts, Snooker, Horse Racing, Cycling or Formula 1 less boring than Cricket ?

Personally, I find Football quite boring too, it takes ages to score a goal

If you explain test Cricket to the people who don't know anything about it, they'd find it boring, Limited overs are more exciting for most of the people.

Majority of Cricket fans are casual fans who don't really care about test cricket and find it boring, they're only interested in limited overs cricket.

There's much more in Football, goals aren't everything. The gameplay all over the only pitch, defending, attacking, passing, techniques etc. Fans enjoy every bit of it. The build up, the missed chances, fouls, send offs etc. make it more suspenseful and entertaining.

Not my cup of tea.

Cricket may be boring for those who don’t know much about it but it sure as heck is not more boring than cycling or snooker.

Even American Football is also considered a very exciting Sport by a lot of Americans, not sure why is it so high in terms of being a boring sport.

Not surprised. Cricket is incredibly time consuming often played in front of empty stadiums, it is only played by a few countries. None of us would care for it if we had a good Football side.

There's quite a jump from golf to the to the rest of the sports where the respondent scores become closer together so it's not so bad I guess.

It was always like this - the game, by nature is something like that. One has to build the taste for it. Even for a T20, it takes almost 3.5 hours to finish. Besides, the core of the game slow - for example, take fast bowling - the most exciting element of the game. To watch 6 balls, sometimes one has to wait 6 minutes. Also, the game by it's nature often gets boring - unless one is stat fanatic, 80% of ODI/T20 matches become academic by half way. Even the most one sided soccer match has a thrill in it as long as the score line in up to one goal apart. For a cricket game, it's not possible to change the course of a game with one stunning act (like a home run or goal or touch down or a KO punch).

It's not surprising that with Cricket, Golf & Snooker is on top in this list. I often bring Golf & Snooker discussing cricket, because I find remarkable similarity in these 3 games - all 3 are slow by nature, extremely skilled game (too technical for average fan to understand unless he spends good time to study & learn the finer things), and a game with very high demerits for every single mistake. And, despite being a team game, cricket is an individualistic sports like these two - at the end it's one on one.

American Football (Gridiron) is among top because I believe apart from Gringos, this game is hardly followed or understood by rest of the world. But, if one understands the basic principle & the scoring system of it, it's quite exciting, tactical and absorbing. Similarly, cycling & racing has a different interest -
when Armstrong was there (before being exposed), I did follow the Tournai closely - it's fun to follow daily overall leaders, yellow, green & pink shirt leaders. Cycling has several types - road race, mountain biking, sprint, team pursuit, Kiren, road time trial .... it's indeed exciting in Olympics and the mountain races of Tour de France between Alps. Formula 1 was my 2nd most followed sport between 1996 to 2004, when Schumi was there ..... Dart is extremely complex to understand - it's just not random target practice; not much popular outside British commonwealth. Surprisingly basketball is lower, may be again cultural issue - may be because 5 of 7 such votes are cast by Chinese & south Asians .....

Cricket's biggest problem is - it's best quality has a long duration associated, and that's mutually exclusive at a very high correlation. Similarly, six hole golf or rapid Snooker will be another joke. Once Palmer said that from Thursday morning when I step into fairway to 18th hole of Sunday evening, these are so many finer things to follow that it's a mental torture - it's easy to pot balls, tougher part is to overcome the fear of missing the hole by an inch.

Snooker's key is the positioning of Q ball with precision shots so that every time a color ball is available after a red - it needs extreme accuracy & zero tolerance from perfection, but the task is repetitive, almost boring for common people. And, like cricket, the longer the game, the better the contest - WC Final is played for 2 days, 35 frames; and it has some epic fails & come backs in the course. Cricket batting is also like that also - do a repetitive task for hours, sessions, even days together with perfection; while bowlers try to break that perfection - obviously it'll become boring, for common eye. That's why, I like Test match, because that game is not about hitting or restricting scoring, rather inch by inch consolidating position like a strategic war game. One has to build the taste in the way the game has it's core - otherwise even T10 is quite boring & monotonous.

Those who dont understand a particular sport will find it boring and cricket is one of the most complex sports around.

As a cricket fan, flat pitches which offer little or nothing to the bowlers is only when I find cricket boring.

Athletics is the least boring is really surprising to me. To be fair the whole list is quite surprising.

I like two of the top three and used to watch loads of snooker on TV as well, so it's safe to say that watching 'boring' sports means a person has impeccable taste.

I understand, you don't watch much of athletics - may be apart from the sprint finals. Do a self test - next time (It's coming to London in early August for the WC), watch the full final round of one event - Long/Triple/High Jump, or Javelin/discuss ...... and better support/back one top participant ..... we'll talk after that. It's not about running or jumping - even we can do that, it's not about time or distance only, it's about a competition.

I had (now it's not required because of youtube) recordings of about 50, 147s; starting from Thorbourn's 1st televised one & Ronny's first 7. May be old wine tastes something like Snooker.

So from what your saying you like Athletics. Well your right I don't watch Athletics, I don't find it that interesting at all. You say its a competition, all those sports have competitions and sure not all of them are as competitve as Athletics but to me I find it hard to believe that Athletics is the least boring.

Cricket is boring because it is the most complicated sport of all, and most importantly it takes 5 days of grinding. After a day at work, people would like to watch something that's simple and stress relieving, the complexity of cricket in fact induces more stress on the viewer.

Also I'd say that game is heavily in favour of batsmen, if ball tampering and chucking are illegal so are big heavy bats. Back in 90's, slogging won't get you sixes you had to time the ball proper. Bring back simple bats and balance the game.

All of the games listed in your post are more entertaining than cricket.

Who is the audience for this survey ? I feel like this survey will fluctuate highly depending on the demographics.

Why don't you go and join a darts forum then? What are you doing here? Joining a Cricket forum only to put it down and compare with such ridiculous Sports.

Cricket in shorter form has too many variables, there are runs scored every ball, wickets, sixes, fours, every single delivery has something riding on it unlike Football where majority of the time is spend in unsuccessful attempts of scoring a goal, that's like appreciating the beauty of leaving 6 Balls to the keeper.

No surprises. Just watch a Pakistan vs SL test match in the UAE where you can count the crowd with one hand and with Bazid Khan on commentary.

Not surprising at all. Cricket is only played at the top level by a handful of countries. Majority of non Asians, especially Europeans/Americans, would never even have heard of it. It takes too long to finish and no one has the time to watch 7-8 hours of an ODI or 5 days of Test cricket unless and until you're a hardcore fan. It also depends on who you're asking and the demographics. Countries like Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka only have cricket and no other sports (or at least in which they're competitive) to boast of. India is slowly but surely diversifying it's sporting profile but cricket will always be cherished like religion in that part.

No surprises. Just watch a Pakistan vs SL test match in the UAE where you can count the crowd with one hand and with Bazid Khan on commentary.

True. No person in their right mind would want to go to a UAE stadium and watch a 5 day snoozefest in a completely dead atmosphere when they can just catch the highlights at the end of the day.

Limited Over Cricket has many exciting moments to offer . Lol @ comparing Cricket with Lame Hobbies like Snooker , Darts and Golf.
Even most Cricket fans find Test Cricket boring so this survey is not surprising. What's the fun in watching 2 rpo scored over a period of 90 overs?

Cricket can be very predictable and boring.

To make cricket more exciting the ICC should get rid of flat/dead wickets. Balance the game between ball and bat. Reduce the ODI game to 80 overs, introduce d/n 4 day test matches. And create a proper test and one day leaugue where everyone plays with each other both home and away.

Test Cricket will always be boring to majority of fans flat pitches or not. In today's fast pace life no one got that much free time to spend on test cricket. Now more and more cricketers/admins are openly admitting that test cricket is no longer the main focus for many countries. Sooner we get rid off it the better.

However, I do accept a good contest between two teams can be worth following if an individual have vacation and/or free time otherwise it becomes practically impossible to watch the entire match.

It is not just test cricket even ODIs can be boring and predictable where the players are just going through the motion.

Like the in the last game after we lost 5 wickets it was pretty obvious that NZ are going to win it and the rest of the remaining hours of the game were just going to be plain boring. Yes it was about fun to see Hasan Ali smack around for a while but even then the game was dull and the outcome pretty much decided.

The world hasn't been properly educated about cricket if people understood that this game wasn't just about playing for five days and taking lunch breaks they would like it more. Like me, I was never really fond of cricket until I properly understood the rules and now I've turned into a fanatic posting on PakPassion.

Come on when Amir and Fahim got NZ to 2/47 you can't say you didn't believe Pakistan were in the match.

As a cricket fan, flat pitches which offer little or nothing to the bowlers is only when I find cricket boring.
I agree. It's a complex sport with different strategies needed for different formats and conditions. For those who do not understand the complexity it seems boring but those who understand cricket in detail it is best sport. No other sport has variety or numbers in strategy that cricket needs

Cricket is like maths, those who understand enjoy it and those who don't find it boring

Yawn! Cricket is a thinking man's game.

No other sport requires such mental thought.

Cricket is unique from other sports. Captain responsibility, uneven opposition on the playing field, multiple formats, etc etc.

Should be duly noted, Cricket is the national sport of England!

I guess this a reflection of society!

Rather be a cricket fan than hooligan!

Cricket is a complex sport and I'm sure 90% of the people who took that survey never played cricket. And for someone who haven't played or understand cricket, it can be very boring.
Not surprised to see tennis among the least boring ones. It's a great time killer. Athletics is the simplest sport/s out there and hence gets the crown. But really who watches athletics on a regular basis :)

None of you will even watch first class 4 day games because it is boring. By definition cricket is a boring spot unless played at the highest level.

Must be the case. Am sure the same poll in India or Pakistan would be a different result

A lot of people who don't like cricket think it is boring. How is this shocking?

NFL & Cricket are boring????!!!!! :O :O :O

Which brain dead species was this survey targeted at???? Most probably fans of footy I guess......

I find golf and snooker to be most boring in this list..

NFL I haven’t watched nor do I know the rules so can’t comment..

Cricket gets boring if it’s a dull test match going on or a one sided one day/T20.. close matches in cricket can make it exciting as well whether it be test, odi or T20I..

Those of us who love and know cricket (Test cricket in particular) do not need the approval of people who dislike cricket. We know how great it is. If 22% of the British public considers cricket to be exciting then that is more than enough to sell out stadiums for international games year after year.

If you explain test Cricket to the people who don't know anything about it, they'd find it boring, Limited overs are more exciting for most of the people.

'Casual fans' is not the same thing as not interested in Test cricket.

Many people are hardcore T20 fans who don't care about Tests but follow T20 very carefully.

In fact I would call you a casual fan, given that you won't know anything about white-ball cricket (while I know more than you about Tests also).

NFL, cricket and golf are arguably the most complex sports on the list.

So no surprise

boring by watching or by playing?

Makes sense, because cricket is a slow sport, comapred to ice hockey and football

Some people who don't understand the game or watch of course will find it boring. It is a time consuming sport which isn't played by many countries so these results aren't that surprising.

Cycling
Horse Racing
Golf

They have to be the Top 3 most boring sports.

I love watching Darts and Snooker.

As per graph it's Golf, and I agree.
Or am I reading the graph wrong?

No way is cricket boring, especially Test cricket. South Africa and England produce the best conditions for competitive cricket between bat and ball. Other countries have to follow suit.
ODI's are boring though, perhaps we ought to find a way to make bowlers part of the game. I'm not going to bother about T20.

The vast majority of humanity would prefer a relatively simple sport like football. Even a layman gets the point. You put the ball into the opposition's net. Cricket is probably the most complex sport out there and especially Test cricket is definitely more of an acquired taste. Nothing surprising here.

Think cricket lacks exposure, seemed to me that it looked like it was at it's peak back in the late 80s and in the 90s.

It has dipped ever since then, and the ICC nearly ruined the game from mid 2000s onwards when it looked to have isolated itself and tried to keep it among the nations that play it.

They don't seem to market it quite well.

Yeah the idea of watching Azhar Ali and Misbah ul-Haq dead bat ball after ball doesn't get people giddy with excitement.. Shocking

Surprised to find NFL so high up on the list. It is alot more interesting than cricket.

I used to follow pretty much all the sports out there(tennis, hockey, baseball, etc) but find most of them boring now except world cup soccer or cricket.

I find watching an action movie with full surround sound more exciting.

You didn’t say that!

Kabhi beth kar poora dekho NFL ka game... you would know what I'm talking about. American football gets a bad rep because it is only played in North America and the rest of the world does not understand it.

Can't say about excitement, but my order is probably (for spectator games, athletics, swimming, gymnastics are medal sports)

Soccer 100
Cricket 10
Tennis 9
Volleyball (conventional) 8
Basketball 7
Snooker (All cue ball games combined led by Snooker) 6
Golf (Only Majors) 5
Badminton 4
Baseball 3
Field Hockey 2
F1 1

Table Tennis, Chess & Contract bride I play lot, but hardly watch.

So much insecurity and self loathing regarding following the cricket in this thread.

Own your damn sport peeps.

This poll indeed is a rubbish one. There are no remotely objective ways to classify 'boredom' of a sport. I agree that sports that move slow can be considered 'boring but it's just a matter of interest and personal perspectives

Nothing shocking here to see cricket top ing the list. The sole reason for this is its lot time killing and hard to understand.Being some of cricket enthusiast we people may not find it hard to watch but when you think logically its would be impenetrable for normal guy who didn't know about the basics of the game

In Cricket, in an ideal scenario, the act of a bowler bowling a ball, batsman hitting the ball and running between wickets for two runs, and fielder returning the ball to the wicket keeper may take about 20-30 seconds. And there will be a no-action-time for about next 30 seconds to 1 minute till the bowler bowls the next ball. So the waiting time is more than the actual play time.If this happens for 90-100 overs in a day (100 times 6 = 600 times)

While sports like football are more entertaining. Two teams will fight for a ball and in the end team which scores more goals will be the winner, its plain and simple.Even one team park the bus(which is a defending tactics)its still will be enthralling in most cases because one will try defending their lungs out while other try to dig it with a spade

And agree with the top exciting sports, some top athletic events like 100m race hardly requires 10 secs with so many big names running around. Most relay races, jumping events too are exciting and time consuming and obviously for a contrary part one can put marathon here and say its pretty boring and time killing but realistically its how those sports works

Tennis is indeed one of the beautiful sport when you can understand the game. And when someone like federer play his best and moves on the court like a swan on a lake its literally the most beautiful sight in any sport for me

I personally find golf and chess very boring to watch and i know problem is not with the sport,i am not be intelligent enough to understand the game is why it looks shabby

But chess is paining to watch for me because only two person around a table and always in thinking mode .Many time clashs and draw makes it more embarrassing

The game of Golf is primarily a businessman's Game. It is a way of socializing for businessmen rather than playing in a competitive manner, that may be the reason why it top the list i think

Volleyball is the best sport to play i think.I enjoyed to the core playing it and yes even enjoyed better than soccer and cricket

The game moves soo fast with enthralling smashes and captivating blockes

It's extremely exciting and absorbing. Particularly, now they have changed the scoring system to encourage more attacking play (& make it time bound). A 5 setter between Brazil, Italy, France, Poland, Germany, Holland or Russia - you can't keep your eyes off!!!!

Great post, this test was beautiful to follow.

I used to find formula 1 pretty exciting. Those roaring of engines brought adrenaline in my veins. Now a days, I just can't bring myself to watch. It's like now a days, it's a cat meowing rather than a lion roaring.

Cricket always tops the list on surveys like boredom or uninteresting. People, especially the younger generation find it to be too time consuming. Even a T20 match takes about 3 and a half hours to complete that is twice the time of a Football match. This is why the Sport is struggling to grow outside it's traditional vicinity. Football will always be the world's number one sport.

As i have said many times, cricket is dying amongst the young. Young white kids from state schools have no interest and that is the same with young black kids. Asian kids still love the game but as whole the game is dying.

Even that is because Asian teams are no good at other Sports. If subcontinental countries were to become successful at Football or other more in demand Sports then South Asian kid's would start losing interest in Cricket as well.

To some extent you are right, but cricket is such a big part of our culture that it will remain very popular.

It's not really a surprise. It takes a lot of effort and concentration to watch cricket. Some people just don't want t9 give it a chance.

Those who dont understand a particular sport will find it boring and cricket is one of the most complex sports around.

As a cricket fan, flat pitches which offer little or nothing to the bowlers is only when I find cricket boring.

Yeah, this basically sums it up.

Cricket is perceived as an elitist sport much like golf, so I guess this does not make these sports as rough and tumble as other sports on the list.

Baseball and Golf have to be the most boring sports ever.

Test Cricket when played on flat pitches has to be up there too.

It all comes down to likes and dislikes. You can make a case for every sport on there being boring or entertaining. If you like cricket you will naturally find it entertaining, the opposite is true as well. I don't care for/like cycling, that would be boring for me for example.

American football is amazing and I don't even follow NFL-I follow college football and hold season tickets for the local team.
It's not boring at all. I can understand that as a fairly complex sport, people wouldn't necessarily understand, but keep in mind that it is the world's most valuable sport for a reason. Cricket will catch up some day and so will soccer.

Whether it is cricket or football it always depends on future development that how you want to bring that game to other countries, things would be different if ICC could aimed to introduce cricket on other regions (Which are quite huge in terms of populations) countries like China, Brazil, Russia, USA. But unfortunately it never happened neither it will be. Without getting into any game people will find it boring. It is obvious. So that's no surprise.

But personally think cricket will get more popular by having other developing nations like Afghanistan, Nepal, etc.

Cricket is not boring but a complex game. Its due to this its not very popular globally. In football for example, you just need a ball and if you have the skill, you will do well. Nothing else matters. You make Lionel Messi play in Mars, his impact will remain the same.

Cricket however, has lots of external dependencies. Yes, players relative skills is important but there are much more to it. It depends on the pitch that you are playing, how much grass in it, how much its been watered, whether you have used heavy roller or not. It depends on the weather, if its sunny it favours batsman and cloud cover assist bowlers. It also depends on the type of ball being used, how old the ball is, which side of the ball has shine, even the color of the ball. It heavily depends on toss, it also depends on what time zone you are batting...batting under artificial lights is more difficult compared to batting at daytime. It depends on the stadiums location...grounds closer to sea and in higher altitude assists bowlers more.

If the above is not enough, it also has various formats which requires different skill sets and adaptation. For example, in test cricket you play with soft hand on a good length ball so that it dont carry to the slips, in ODIs the same ball you will try to guide towards 3rd man or will try to hit towards cover.

So all in all cricket is a very complex game and more like science. Hence many people find it boring and not a straight forward sports. But fans like us who understand the above factors...simply love this game.
