Should England go with BOTH Stuart Broad and James Anderson for the 1st Test against India?

No.

Anderson will only be economical once the ball gets old. England have got pacers like Archer, Wood and Stone who can do more with the old ball.

Archer is going to play most likely, so only one of them has possibility of playing as Eng will have to adjust two specialist spinners as well depending upon the conditions. If the wicket requires 3 specialist pacers along with Stokes then it can happen but, not sure if this would how pitch would be.

Only one of them. Archer, A/B, Bess/Moeen, Leech, Stokes. That's 5 and Root is sixth option. So, if it is Anderson in first test, Broad comes in 2nd test or vice versa.

In pink ball test, Anderson and Broad both should play.

I don't think we are going to see Anderson and Broad playing a Test match together outside England ever again.

Think Jimmy will be retired by the team they your New Zealand or South Africa again....

Their spinners are probably not going to run through India, so they need pace to rattle us.

Archer is a must

Pink ball Ashes test at the end of this year which both Anderson and Broad will almost certainly play in if fit.

I'm not sure Moeen is needed there. Two spinners should be enough + Root is a handy 3rd option for offspin. I'd want the longer batting lineup instead.

This. It's why they got smashed in India last time as well. Bits n pieces players don't work in places like India.

Moeen is arguably the best spinner of the three.

Anyway, I think A&B will be rotated. Anderson is a must for the pink ball test, perhaps both.

He is as bad as the other two, Moeen needs the Duke ball and and bounce, without both, he is ineffectual.

That’s why I would drop Bess and go for this team from #5 down:

Stokes
Pope
Foakes
Moeen
Archer or Wood
Anderson or Broad
Leach

There’s a guy with five test centuries at #8.

Moen should defonitely play hes handy with the bat and can bowl ok spells

Really? I thought he'd been out of the team the last couple of years while Leach & Bess.

And his FC bowling average is 37... that's part timer status to me.

That's the other way to solve it. Have to get Moeen primed that he's playing as a front-line bowler. He's not always handled that well.

He went backwards under Bayliss. I hope he can advance again, I like the old Beard.

I like Bess but he isn’t the finished article yet, his action isn’t grooved and he bowls too many four-balls. I think he will leak fast in India and Root will have to overbowl the quicks (or himself more).

Bess and Leach won them a series in SL just 2 weeks back, if Ali is picked and he flops like in last India tour, it would be big blunder on management.

Archer will play, they need to pick one of Broad / Anderson for first test.

There will be a new variant of SG test ball that will be used.

More prominent seam and the inside cork will be harder. The ball will have a darker look as well. so England may want to play 3 pacers.

For the day-night test, I think both Broad and Anderson could play, but for the other ones, England will have to go in with people who can do more with the old ball.

Archer should not play. But I guess England will want to have a look at him in Indian conditions. So only one of them will play.

With Archer injured now could this happen abroad one last time?

no because I think they want to play Anderson and Broad together in the DN test. So they wouldn't here, because I don't think they want Anderson playing 3 tests in a row in India.
