Should Pakistan look beyond Mohammad Abbas and Naseem Shah

Abbas is one for the future. Still needs to learn bowling with the old ball, increase his speed and improve fielding. Long way to go.

Gotta say I've been fairly disappointed by Abbas. I had really high hopes after his first 10 games where he had 50+ wickets, he geniunely seemed to be a force in Tests.

He's been totally flat since, even in relatively helpful conditions in England and now in NZ. And he hasn't necessarily bowled badly, he's just lost pace and batsmen have figured him out.

Don't think there's any merit to select him after the 1st Test vs NZ


Naseem needs to cook more in domestic cricket. Not his fault for being selected in Test cricket with basically ZERO experience. Failure of management, expected from Misbah and Waqar

I thought they bowled pretty well. A bit unlucky. Especially Abbas tbh. The bowling attack was actually functioning pretty well as a unit. It'd be nice if Abbas could bowl a bit quicker, but he wasn't exactly bowling bad.

The way Naseem is bowling there's potential there. His control and accuracy lets him down a bit, but isn't a spray gun like some others. Hopefully he'll get there with time. Even shaheen was struggling with accuracy and control early on and improved. And at such a young age. Pretty much only guy I've seen at 17 who could bowl fast and accurate at the same time was Amir himself, which is why he was hyped to the moon. But I don't expect Naseem to rip through sides any time soon, he's not good enough right now, think we'll see in 2 years or so. Perhaps better he had more domestic experience first, but so far think he's holding his own in international cricket, I'd like to give him a few more tests and wait and see. In this test alone had we taken our catches, Naseem would have had better figures, and I think we could have got NZ for a low score.

Shoaib and Rashid made the point on their broadcast today about how the PCB training staff is not enabling the players to maximize their on-field effort.

In fact, the training is hurting players; see the sudden drop in pace from Abbas and Naseem, and so many other young&healthy players getting injured, poor running etc.

I don't know too much about cricket training, but the results are quite pathetic.

At the age of 17, Naseem Shah has bowled 186 overs in Test Cricket. Some of the batsmen he has bowled to during this toil:

Ollie Pope
Jos Butler
Kane Williamson

Henry Nichols

The boy has put in a lot of effort at such a young age on some of the flattest tracks that Pakistan have had to play on away from home. Unfortunately, he has not been lucky with wickets. I believe this toil at this young age is excellent for him as his body is still strong enough to recover and come back to toil again. A time will come when he will become the bowler you want him to be as long as he is persisted with.

Pakistan cannot back out of this now I’m afraid.

Agree that Naseem has a ton of potential. But I don't think the way to develop him is to let him get demolished over and over again by the worlds best batsmen.

Thats just going to hurt his confidence, and he'll only want to play it safe not push to develop new skills

The best way to develop Naseem is in domestic and A tours. Not Tests, and not LOI. A year or so in domestic can really help him come along

Naseem will pick up his rewards on the easier tours such as Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and West Indies (no disrespect to these countries). There is no young or experienced bowler in Pakistan who will just walk in and make Kane Williamson or Steve Smith his bunny. This is how I would mentor the boy, just to console him by saying that the good days will come and all of this toil would have been worth it.

Shaheen the opening bowler- no issues with him

Abbas the Test bowler- no issues with him

Abbas the second new ball bowler- All of my issues are with him!

*I think he is too slow to trouble anyone on a flat deck and how they have nullified him by standing outside of the crease to him. He is just wasting that new ball whereas a much quicker bowler can be better in terms of attacking the stumps and creating chances in the slips.

99% of the tracks in the world and SENA are on flat decks. How much longer are we going to be held hostage to Abbas because of his 21 average?

When we end up 5 wickets down it's hard to see us even adding 40-50 more runs from there. That is not a recipe for test match success for many teams, let alone the state we're in right now.

Someone out of Naseem and Abbas needs to make way for a pacer who can hold a bat. I'm not sure whether Naseem has done enough to be that guy yet. It'd be a big ask for him to become Pakistan's 2nd pacer if someone needs to make way.

The only bowler who I can think of who May be sensible enough to bat or look to build a partnership in Pakistan is Sohail Khan. Hassan Ali is more of a dasher who may or may not come off. Then again, SK is also 36 I believe. There is nothing more to gain from him besides a year maybe. You can try to get Amir back who is still a decent bat, but this is a long shot also for the reasons you know well.

We just have to accept that we have two sitting ducks at 10 and 11 for now I’m afraid

It’s the other way around. Bookmark this post. Abbas will never play Test cricket again, with Hassan, Shaheen, and Faheem taking up the first 3 spots in any bowling lineup and Tabish blocking Abbas out for at least another year.
