Jadeja is playing his first match in the series. He took 4 wickets in the first innings and now currently batting on 86*. This inning can prove to be a match defining knock. Should he have played more tests in this series?

I still don't think highly of him. One knock does not make him an automatic choice is fhe first eleven. He has lapses in his career where goes well below average. So if there was a 6th test, I wouldn't have been surprised if he had gotten a pair in the 6th test.

One knock makes no difference. Pandya has much higher ceiling than Jadeja. India did the right thing by playing Pandya.

He should have played more regardless of this performance. This game he had a point to prove. Ashwin hasn't set the world alight and usually performs better when bowling in tandom with Jadeja. Could have selected both for some games.

I think he has done enough so far in this test to book himself a place on the Australian tour bus. Would be interesting to see whether Ashwin would be on that bus too or not..

India's best spinner and a decent bat. Should have played over Ashwin methinks who has a pretty poor record overseas.

One bowling performance also makes no difference. Jadeja took just one inning to score more than half the runs Pandya scored in the 4 test matches. India did the wrong thing by dragging Pandya to all 4 test matches. He is a useless bowler and an average batsman who only scored a fifty when the team was in a good position.

You dont play in Eng with 2 spinners. So realistically it was between Ashwin and Jadeja. Considering the amount of left handers Eng has in their side, logically Ashwin was the right choice. Now he bowled rubbish, that is a different story. But you cant blame Kohli for this selection.

Pandya's straight fight was with Karun Nair, whether we went with an extra batsman or an all rounder. Pandya did decently in SA and SL, so it was hard to drop him. Also going with 4 bowlers is a risk. That 2011 Lords test when Zaheer broke down in 1st spell still haunts me. So there is an extra cution with an all rounder.

India did not lost this series due to Pandya or Ashwin. Yes more was expected from them but the main reason for our defeat is openers and Rahane. Pandya is just an easy target and a scape goat for fans and media.

Jadeja actually has a better record in SENA than Ashwin with both bat and ball.

Jadeja even has a 6fer in SA, something Ashwin is often criticised for not achieving.

This is Jadeja's 8th game in SENA. Ashwin has already played 15.

It was either him or Ashwin so you can't blame team management. Trying Kuldeep was also not a bad idea, keeping in mind his success against Eng in LOI, but they could have used much more experienced Jadeja in that second test .

Yes, our openers and Rahane obviously are to be blamed for not performing.

But Pandya - the batsman - and Ashwin are also equally to blame. They are in the team as all-rounders. They should have contributed with the bat. It was part of their job. And they failed majorly at it.

Pandya the bowler actually had a pretty good series.

As a 5th bowler he averaged 24 and took a 5-fer means he has done better than Curran - England's 3rd seamer.

But as batsmen, both him and Ashwin have been total flops. Add to that both the WK flopping means we were always playing with 3 batsmen less than the opposition.

I would have played him ahead of Pandya.

Better option in all facets.

It’s not just this one match. Jadeja should have played from the start. A lot of people have this belief that England is not a good place for spinners and you don’t play two. Well England have been happy to have Rashid and Moeen and in the past Swann and panesar. It all depends on the quality of spin and whether they offer something with the bat and fielding. Jadeja is very handy with the bat and very economical with bowling. I think he’s also one of the best fielders in the world.

Not having Dhawan and Jadeja from the start and non availability Of bumrah earlier on probably has been the main difference between winning the series and losing it earlier on. Too little too late from them.

India cannot keep on recycling the same players.

Jadeja is the 3rd ranked all-rounder in the world. The only justification for not paying him is the conditions are completely unsuited to his bowling.

India missed a trick. Sir Jadeja is twice the allrounder than Pandya

Pandya gets too much flak on PP. He is overrated and overhyped but still not crap as he is made to.

Hafeez was ranked the number 1 all rounder just recently as well. You dont have to blindly look at the rankings, Jadeja is simply not good enough. Should probably give someone new a chance. One swallow does not makes a summer.

Of course. Much superior to the overrated Ashwin.

England played 7 lefthanders and until now Ashwin was considered the superior bat. I know you've constantly maintained that jadeja is better but except the last test where ash was unfit he hasn't really done much wrong.

The problem was with rotating players & using right players for right match! We played Kuldeep in overseas conditions and then kept playing Ashwin when he was not fit. Pandya should not have played all the matches, on dry surfaces they should have played Jadeja or extra batsman! But these were minor issues. The major issues are Openers, Rahane and the wicket keeper (Karthik played in two matches & was totally useless!), Kohli's captaincy was another big issue! Kohli is captain only because of his reputation in the team! Such guys at least need a top quality coach who should not be picked on any reputation but solely on merit & experience! The Kumble debacle was one of the worst thing to have happened to this promising Indian side, and Kohli should curse himself for this because he had the chance to become a great player of a greatest Indian team, but sold it for some cheap ego & fake-pride!

England played 2 spinners (against India, who generally play spin better than others) and won.
Jadeja has better record that Pandya even in domestic cricket and has proved his mettle several times.
Jadeja again proved that his batting is miles better than Pandya. Just imagine 30-40 extra runs in the first and third test and the overall results would have been totally different.
Less said about Kohli's captaincy the better, he played an unfit Ashwin. Hundreds of players give there everything to play for India and Kohli thought it would be a great idea to play unfit Ashwin while totally ignoring Jadeja. He played Kuldeep in the second test. :)))
Kohli's captaincy is as much responsible for this series loss as Rahane's and openers batting.

You do not get to be ranked high due to "one swallow", you get ranked high due to consistent performance over a number of years. The problem with Hafeez was that his bowling was illegal, if it wasn't then he should have been in the team based on his record.

His bowling action is legal now. I guess its rinse and repeat for Indian fans and that is reflected in Indian team's selection policies as well.

He was going at nearly 4 runs an over in the second innings.

His bowling action is never legal or illegal. It depends on the context of the situation. He controls when to chuck and when to bowl.

Never. His career alongwith Ashwin should have ended in 2017 but its India, rinse and repeat.

Career ended? How many spinners around the world today have 300 plus wickets @ 25 or 170 odd wickets @ 23 ?

What is his record outside of Asia against non-minnows?

Average of 34 away from home against non-minnows as compared to an average of 33.8 for the so-called-ATG Jimmy Anderson. Ashwin has 3 5fers in 21 matches. Anderson has 4 in 53 matches.

Jadeja's contribution to India's victory in Melbourne

Jadeja is the 3rd ranked all-rounder in the world. The only justification for not paying him is the conditions are completely unsuited to his bowling.

This Test is another reminder another reminder that Jadeja is a very good Test player.

Much has been said of Bumrah's bowling, and it is true that he bowled very well. Not much has been said of Jadeja's bowling. But the fact is, of the 14 Australian specialist batsmen and wicketkeeper wickets over the 2 innings, Bumrah took 6, Jadeja 5, Sharma 2 and Shammi 1.

Jadeja also had an additional contribution of making it possible for the pacers to get rest while he bowled his long spells.

With the bat Jadeja didn't do much, but that was only due to the situation when he came into bat. In both innings India were looking to up the scoring rate when Jadeja came to the crease. If India needed to survive, I have no doubt he would have played differently and scored more, albeit at a slower pace.

Doubt the pacer operating at the other end ever gets rest with Jadeja bowling, he barely takes a minute to complete his over :)). At least Ashwin deliberately slows down the tempo and takes 2-3 minutes to finish his, although even he has proved that he can finish sub minute overs when the situation demands (I saw him bowl an over in 40 seconds against Amla in the 2015 Delhi test final day, must be the quickest over in history).

Anyway it seems Sir had an injury prior to this match, lucky for us that we have good depth in our spin bowling unit.

While it is true that he does go through his overs quickly, during his spell the two pacers who are not bowling get a rest.

He bowled a total of 57 overs in Melbourne. Umesh, who he replaced, bowled only 37 overs in Perth.

The speed with which he bowls his overs also lets the captain not come under time pressure to complete the quota.

My comment was tongue in cheek, I agree with you buddy.

Won't be surprised if he's dropped for Ashwin next match, though he should play

Yes. Jadeja in the last few years is one of the cleanest hitters of the ball I have seen. His batting is whole different level now, and the lack of opportunities isn't letting that show.

As for bowling+fielding, he is as good as Ashwin if not better.

Ashwin is done and dusted and it's time to move on! Can't rely on his fitness and guy is not a cheetah on field like Jadeja either. He can stick to playing in India in one odd match, but can't risk having him for overseas tours. Jadeja is the real deal and will always be!
