This is an important question. Averages 13 in England. Did nothing of note in the CT 2017. Does not bowl very much.

According to friends, he has looked totally disinterested in this Australia series.

Rizwan can do a better job in the middle order. Abid Ali can open...time for some fresh faces with enthusiasm to win games...

Malik should surely be dropped?

He can be taken as a mentor if we want experience in the dressing room?

Can anybody looking at his dismal average and SR vs top teams since CT17 justify his selection ?
 
The only hope people had was he's decent against spin.

He's not that either anymore.

All half decent spinners can work him out. Finished as a batsman and captain.
 
Thing is I would rather have him there if things are getting tight in a game against windies , AFG, bang, etc
And also India
So he probably makes the squad on that alone.
We need to make sure we don't slip up against minnows so he is In
 
I'm of the opinion that he shouldn't, simply because this 'experiment' series has not unearthed an able replacement for him, it's also unfair to throw in a youngster at the deep end in a World Cup. Had Umar Akmal fired and shown the temperament we want him to show, I would have wanted him at 5 for the World Cup in place of Malik, that didn't happen (regardless of what happens in this 5th odi).

Having said that, theres really only one place that is certain in the World Cup 11, thats Babar at number 3, every other position is open to change even at this late stage.
 
Of course he should be in the squad. He's been one of our best batsmen over the past few years.
 
He should be dropped. No doubt about it. He's been poor for a long time and he will be a walking wicket in England if he goes.
 
With an average of 12 in about 20 one day innings in England and given his recent form he defo should not be .
 
Do we have any adequate replacements? Dropping him for the sake of it makes no sense.
 
Unfortunately that rib injury and subsequently missing the final two matches has secured his place in the world squad.

I would be very very (pleasantly) surprised if he is dropped. Perhaps if Hafeez is fully fit and Rizwan performs again.
 
I would say yes, because if he makes the team he will most certainly finagle his way into the starting 11. He wouldnt be a bad backup, can play a mentor role, but we cant risk him and Hafeez both in the starting 11.
 
Almost all comments are against Malik's inclusion, yet the poll shows many favoring him.

Which means people supporting him are not doing it in the open.

Precisely how Malik will sneak into the team for the world cup - totally undeserved and without any value add.
 
If he put team above himself he should retire now with a final not that others are better than me and i wish Pakistan good in WC.
 
He is a 'senior' and we all know Inzi's love for seniors.



You can expect garbage Inzi to pick him irrespective of form.

He may not have the reflexes for 145+ pacers, but Pakistan will need him in the middle-overs against the likes of India, England, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan etc. in the World Cup.

He is our only middle-order batsman who has the ability and the experience to tackle a red hot Kuldeep, Rashid, Mujeeb, Chahal etc. and take them on.

He is past it frankly. He’s hasn’t shown enough of that ‘ability’ over the past two years and with Haris back, he becomes irrelevant.
 
Yes, yes, and AECh EFf yes.. the dude has no place in a team going to a World Cup in England of all places.. someone should pull out his stats in England..

Malik was/is/will always ever be just an FTB
 
Having both Hafeez and Mian in the playing 11 is going to handicap Pakistan and at the moment Hafeez is looking like the lesser of two evils. In fact I'm seeing a lot of love for the professor currently. :hafeez2

Asia Cup was due to the top order flopping. Fakhar and Babar were walking wickets.
 
Mickey basically confirmed Maliks place in the squad maybe he hasn't looked at his stats in England.

From what I've seen of him in the most two recent series (SA away and Aus at home), he isn't potent against spin as he used to be. He was never blessed against pace to begin with but now he's become a mere accumulator of spin bowling.
 
Even I will be a better number 7 than Malik.. and I bat At 8 for my club..

Well observed - this is what I've noticed of him nowadays. He can't compensate his strokeless batting against pace with spin bashing like he used too with ease.

Good post, unfortunately I think you are right.

Although Mickey just confirmed that they are still deciding on the final place and I think that’s Shan’a. Shan really had his place sorted after the first ODI, but his average performance along with Rizwan and Abids 3 centuries have really confused the management.

I agree this is the most likely squad with only place in contention is Shan's.
 
He should but won't be, still will not make the first XI now that Haris Sohail has booked his place in the playing eleven.
 
However we do in the World Cup, I think for the first time in a while, we will have a squad going that is pretty much made from the best available players.

This year, the only undeserving passenger we will be carrying will be Malik. And considering we had Younis in the last World Cup, I think that’s still an improvement.
 
There's never been any room for both Malik and Hafeez in the same XI, and now both have become even more redundant given that Haris is clearly a superior part time bowler.

Only 1 should not go to the WC, whether the selectors have the guts to drop a 'senior player' is whole other matter.
 
A question that I've been on the fence about.

I do not think his going or not going will be detrimental to our chances, but I guess the fact that others might feel more confident with his presence on the field will help Pakistan.

We know that our wheels can come off pretty easily in the face of pressure, and having a Malik like player in the team can reign in the nerves.

But yeah, I don't think we'll be keeping a match-winner out if we are to include Malik.
 
It seems really difficult to fit him in the line up so there is no point in keeping him in the squad as Haris Sohail is performing really well..
 
We can vote all we want here.

Mickey and Inzi still love him and he'll 100% be in the team. Undroppable.
 
Malik should of been dropped along time ago. His performance against New Zealand
ODI's was really poor and he is averaging 16 in England.
 
Is it necessary to include him just because they 'invested' in him for 4 years while there are clearly better players?

I have been following pp for years and tried to make account for months but it was not working out and finally iam here. I wanted to say shoiab malik is just occupying the spot of other well deserving players (asif,haris,abid) i hope he isn't our first choice.
Me being die hard haris fan i can't just see harry out of playing 11
 
Shoaib Malik is a disaster on UK tours. If he was part of the XI in 2nd odi Idoubt Pakistan would've made more than 290 or 300. The middle and lower order batsman would've folded under pressure with a required run rate over 11 thanks to Malik's pathetic game.

Haris is'nt good either has shown he is a average striker of the bowl, Asif and Abid can be useful but Sarfraz is needed on the position Haris was batting.
 
if babar and haris would have swap positions i bet haris would have scored more at no 3 and would have carried on after his fifty unlike babar and babar would have failed in a situation where haris came in my point id both babar and haris are needed so
We should drop imam and make babar open and haris at 3.

Welcome to PP.

Your views are pretty much of most people here, a player like Shoaib Malik doesn't deserve to play for Pakistan especially in a WC that is being staged in England with his batting abilities and recent form, but unfortunately our seniority culture has destroyed many years of a number young talented cricketers.

A player with the talent that Haris Sohail has should have been a starter in our team for some time now with some great records under his belt, but injuries along with other players being preferred over him who have connections have denied him that.

Shoaib Malik can't play fast bowling to save his life, while Haris can make good fast bowlers look like mediocre ones when playing those lovely drives, yet Malik will always be selected ahead of him. I hope this changes now.

I agree with you that at no 3 , Haris can easily score more runs than babar but as Babar is a blue eyed boy he won't ever be touched .

Unfortunately I have to agree with you, Malik is a liability and it was my concern that his purple patch would be over in time conviniently for the World Cup but there is nothing which can be done, as many elders and saints on PP foretold; his selection is a guarantee for the 2019 WC as much as death, taxes and Sarfraz's biryani tid.
 
He should not be selected for the WC. He is in horrible form and is awful in English conditions. In recent months he has had issues bashing spin as well. A massive sign he is finished. Pakistan cannot carry players at the WC.

Since Babar Azam's debut 4 years ago Malik averages 29 at a SR of 79 against the top opposition. This is not good enough, plus he is getting older and reflexes are slower.

Malik is useless.

He does not even bowl that much , with the bat against pace he always struggles.

There is simply no point in playing him.

Don't understand the hate for babar.
I like harris but babar is much more elegant and consistent than Harris.
On the other hand hand if babar given a chance as an opener he will outperform all of your boys (fakher, abid, shahzaib etc)

No no, u cant remove the backbone. Remember what SARFARAZ said that MALIK and HAFEEZ are the backbone of the team. So u cant imagine a Pak team without Malik.

If u are saying about elegance and consistency then haris is much more elegant than babar his shots are just treat to watch but he has a issue of hitting so his best place is no 3 and babar will look million dollar if he opens

We have seen this backbone how much destructive it is can win matches easily (for opponents)
 
There is no place for Malik in the team right now. I am sure he is mature enough to understand this. We can't drop Haris or Asif Ali in place of Malik who has been poor in England throughout his career. Pakistan should rather try fitting Hafeez in playing 11 as late order hitter and moreover he can bowl some economical spells as wel against non asian sides. Hafeez provides better balance to the team (only if given chance at 6) and has all the scoring shots in the book.
