Should the concept of proper 'Tours' once every 4 years be brought back?

There is just so much of random cricket going on that no one remembers who is playing who and what happened when they played last. As Buttler has beautifully put it today, they have a test match ending against NZL in Jan and the very next day they play a white ball series in Bangladesh. That's just ridiculous.


I think they should bring back the concept of proper 'Tours' once every 4 years. like India's tour of Australia once every 4 years. Play 3 T20s, 3 ODIs, 4 Tests. It has relevance because the next tour will be 4 yrs later and people will remember it, like ok the last tour so and so won tests, so and so won T20s and ODIs...

A random T20/ODI series happening just like that and just about anytime is meaningless, just total crap and completely lacks relevance. It actually started to happen for commercial purposes because playing India or big 3 often generates more revenue. Or playing some T20s generates more revenue, and in the process they have made bilateral cricket a complete joke.

Anyone remembers how many T20 series were played in 2018 and what we're the results? Or how many ODI series RSA were player in 2019 and results? Do we even remember them. At least tell for your home team? No one will remember because it lacks context.

Do we remember what happened on India's tour of Pakistan in 2004? Yes, India won the test series 2-1 and ODI series 3-2.

What happened in Pakistan's tour of India in 2005? Yes Pak won the ODI series 4-2 while the test series was drawn.

People remember proper tours and relate to it, esp when they happen once every 4 years. No one remembers a random series happening only for commercial purpose without any context.

In practice, your suggestion would be perfect. However, cricket schedules are determined by profit making ventures. The current global cricket economy is based on a) Indian tours b) Franchise competitions. Thus all other series, across different formats needs to fit around these two money making factors. That’s why you get the piecemeal series you see. It’s not changing anytime soon.

Should have proper 5 tests now and again. If the Ashes are 5 tests then other important tours should be as well.

It's greed amongst some nations where they want to play against each other all of the time and rake in TV revenue that is damaging cricket.

The days of structured bilateral cricket and a standard series of 3 Tests, 5 ODIs and 1-2 T20Is are gone.

This is the new reality of international cricket and we all know where it is heading.

ODIs will not survive beyond the 2020s. I think the 2027 World Cup will be the last ODI World Cup.

In 10 years time, there will be separate Test and T20I teams. No player will partake in both formats which means that cricket boards will have the flexibility to play both formats at the same time.

A lot of bilateral series will be played simultaneously. The Indian Test team could be playing a series in England while their T20I team could be playing in Sri Lanka.

This will free up a lot of space in the calendar for players to have adequate rest and for more leagues to emerge or for the existing ones to get longer in duration.

India Srilanka series literally killed the bilateral interest. In 2017 India played two test series, two ODI series, two T20 series in addition to multinational tournament.

Yes, I understand it's all for commercial reasons and we are unlikely to go back to the old structured tours, but we are now seeing empty stadiums in an Eng- Aus ODI series. So this has now started to back fire.

Imagine if this was a series played just before the Ashes as part of England's tour of Australia. I'm sure there would be a lot more interest.

We are talking about T20 leagues, but that bubble may also burst, we are having fat too many leagues and ppl will stop finding any relevance. This year CPL wad literally played in empty stadiums.

Australia world T20 crowd was not exactly great either. India matches and other subcontinent team matches had some crowd. Otherwise very thin crowd. This is a poorly scheduled series. If they want crowd any time anywhere they need to play India not England lol India vs ZImbabwe dead rubber had 82000 people watching at the MCG.
