Shubman Gill and Vijay Shankar have been called up to India’s white-ball squads for their series against Australia and New Zealand in place of the suspended duo of Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul.

They were sent home following comments they made on Indian talkshow ‘Koffee with Karan’, and will be suspended until an inquiry into their behaviour takes place.

The replacements may be inexperienced – Shubman has yet to make his international bow while Shankar has just five T20I caps to his name – but both are in form and represent like-for-like substitutions.

Shubman is a top-order batsman who was the Player of the Tournament for India during the ICC Under 19 Cricket World Cup 2018, and has only gone from strength to strength since then. His Ranji Trophy form has been stunning, with his average for the season standing at 103, while he has an average of 47.72 from 37 List A games.

Shankar is a seam-bowling all-rounder, and while he didn’t set the world alight on his first foray into international cricket, he has impressed for India A. He was the side’s leading run-scorer in their recent series against New Zealand A, and has an average of 48.55 from 14 India A 50-over games.

India lost the first ODI against Australia by 34 runs. They will play two more games before heading to New Zealand, where they will play five ODIs and three T20Is.

It was only going to be a matter of time before Gill was going to be called up.

Now the real hard work starts for him, but I think he'll do very well as he has all the basics to have a great career.

he opens in first class and averages 78, him and prithvi shaw will no doubt be opening together in tests eventually. mouth watering prospect for india fans if they both live up to their potential. saw him in the under 19 world cup, was in another league to most of the other middle order bats in the tourny.

Just when Kohli is entering the latter part of his career India find another one.... their production line never ends :danish

Bhai, let him debut. Yes, the hype is there but he needs to be given some space. :lara

its not even a year since the under 19 wc and both shaw and gill have made it to the indian set up.

it was indias bowling that destroyed pak in that semi, yet none of the bowlers made it yet, whereas pak already have shaheen playing tests.

shows how both countries have such varying confidence levels in their disciplines, india with their batsmen and pak with bowlers, expect to throw them in at international and expect them to perform.

yet young players of the perceived weaker discipline find it difficult to break into the international xi.

Don’t think that’s the case. This is the best ever pace attack in Indian history & there is just no space for youngsters to come in. Also Khalil & another Muslim guy (forgot name) are just into their 20s & they have made it as back up, another young guy played some T20s. Avesh Khan from 2016 U19 batch has already played for India. In couple of years time from T20 specialist, Bumrah has gone to win a Test series in Australia - PAK’s equivalence would have been carrying Nehera for WC.

The issue isn’t about bowlers or batsman - issue is how you phase out obsolete oldies and bring fresh blood. This is not only now - during Inzamams 4 years regime as PAK’s most powerful captain in recent times; PAK won 2004 & 2006 U19 WC - only one player played one single Test from those squads in 4 years. And it’s not about bowler or batsman - I was more impressed with Jamshed Ahmed & Akhtar Ayub in 2006 team; some Mahmood from 2004 team ..... where were they? And same guy is now CS!!!!!

I don't think that is the case at all, I think we have unnecessarily jumped the gun with gill, he should have been given more time mature, agarwal would have been a more sensible option. Shaw came in as his rise has coincided with our test openers deciding batting isn't something they want to be good at, he is in the just right place at right time. Bowlers will have it difficult as right now this indian bowling unit when all are fit picks itself with lot of competition for reserve places, unlike the odi middle order where its basically a chit system, whose ever names comes out plays the game, they are all equally bad.

Happy that Gill is in the squad but he probably wouldn't get a lot of games in Australia and New Zealand. And when he does, he'll be expected to score big to keep his place in the team.

Either way, it's a big chance for anyone to get this close to the World Cup. And to think that it wouldn't have happened if not for Karan Johar.

Gill was outstanding in u19 worldcup .in the final he was playing pace of pakistani bowler which was most of time around 140 kph with ease and class .this kid is special and will be upcoming superstar

India Pakistan match was Semi Final.

Tendulkar goes, Kohli comes, kohli gets into the later stages of his career, Along comes Gill. Indian batting can field 3 batting line ups of international standard easily.

I was alluding to the inclusion of Gill

oh thought it was shankar, but not a fan of gill being picked either, he needs atleast a year or 2 more and this isn't the batting lineup you want to put untested kids in, this is far too volatile and they will be under pressure from the get go, not to mention there is a world cup around and unless the team wants him in the team, which is unlikely given he is a replacement, this is basically unnecessary pressure on the kid.

I am a fan of the saying "If he is good enuf, he is old enuf"

And then there's the likes of Pant and Shaw as well..

Let this guy make is debut and perform against top quality international bowlers, before hyping him. Jump from first class to international is a big leap, hope he has mental strength to handle all the other things that come along with playing international cricket.

I can understand the excitement behind Gill's inclusion. But don't put down Shankar just as yet.

FYI - the first and the only batting stint he had had at the international level was at the Nidahas cup final. Yes - he did not perform well at the first chance he got but so what - not everyone performs in their first stint (the great Sachin - check out his first two ODI scores).

Shankar was specifically given the role of a finisher in the recent NZ A series which had players like Ferguson and Neesham in the opposite ranks. He was the top scorer and finished two matches when Ind A chased 300+ scores. He is a quality bat to come in at 5 - in fact he can even be a option in tests coming in at 6. Much more solid than Pandya at 6 though no match for him as far as pace is concerned - strictly part time.

His bowling is not up to the mark though and he can at best bowl about 5 overs. So if he is included then someone like Jadhav needs to be in the line up (which was the case with Pandya too). So give him a chance and hope he can put in some performances so that we have solid options to choose from
