Celebrity designer and actor Masaba Gupta has taken to Twitter to call out ex-cricketer and former Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Ramiz Raja for laughing at a racist joke directed at her father and former West Indies cricketer, Vivian Alexander Richards, and her mother, Neena Gupta.

In her Twitter post Masaba wrote, “Dear Ramiz Raja ( sir ) grace is a quality few have. My father, mother and I have it in spades. You have none. Sickening to see you laugh on national TV in Pakistan at something the world stopped laughing at about 30 years back. Step into the future. All 3 of us are here with our chin up. #ramizraja.

Masaba Gupta’s tweet came after a video of Ramiz Raja laughing at a racist joke targeting Vivian Richards went viral on social media. In the clip, a comedian is seen making fun of Vivian’s skin colour. When the host of the show asked the comic if she followed cricket or not, she answered, “I do watch cricket matches and my heart broke when Vivian Richards went into a relationship with Neena Gupta. I wrote a couplet then. ‘Jo ladkiyan khud ko kehti hain malika-e-aliya, Unko fir milta hai Mr Kaliya.'” The lines roughly mean, “The girls who consider themselves the queen, eventually end up with a black man.” Ramiz Raja, who was a guest on the show, was seen laughing at this tasteless comment, supposedly meant as a joke.

This isn’t the first time a Pakistani cricketer has come under the spotlight for supporting disparaging remarks or making one themselves. Earlier, Pakistani cricket coach and former player Abdul Razzaq received backlash for making misogynistic remarks against actor Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. However, he later apologised for his remark.

Sickening to say the least. All eyes on Pak media these days. Our celebrities have to be more cognizant of what they say and do on screen

Rameez must have met Viv many times. Must have a number of friends and acquaintances who are non white, him laughing at this crude joke is shocking.

Want to tag Darren Sammy bhai here.. also Pak seems to be 2 years behind on what is considered racist.

@cricketjoshila @daytrader Suno News and Rameez/Aquib are guests on the show.
This is the kind of humour you get to see in Punjabi stage dramas in Lahore, Crass and Crude.
These guys make it to national TV and since these channel want views, they post on Youtube.

Pakistani channels and celebs need to become more careful. Masaba would have shown/shared this with Viv Richards and imagine how he must have felt.

This kind of humour is pretty common in Stage Dramas of Lahore. It is even more Crude then this.
Just search on youtube and have headphones on, but you need to understand Punjabi.
These comedians/actors come from that background and blurt out the same things on national TV.

I see what you did there. If I am not wrong he is an honorary citizen of Pakistan or something like that.🥸

On topic - Making fun of someone’s skin color is so Asian (not just Subcontinent). Many in our part of the world still don’t understand the racist (colorism for our world) nature of this.

Highly condemnable, nevertheless.

Not sure how Viv will take this when he next visits Pakistan for PSL etc

Quite impressed that there is so little racism in Bharat these days compared to Pakistan. Although one or two of the comments in reply to that tweet are kind of ironic given that they are calling out Ramiz on his lack of grace.

There are still some illiterate sections of (Bharathiya) society (but educated) who doesn't even realise that they are being racist. People still casually refer their niece and siblings as 'Kaala' as to poke fun. This women had the same mentality and just got given a bigger audience in the age of internet.

Is Masaba Gupta criticizing only Ramiz on that show? He just laughed. The woman who cracked joke should be held responsible for such racist remarks.

I think it is a mentality problem in South Asia. It's very common in South Asia to make fun of skin colour. Of course, it's wrong and can't be justified.

This is nothing new anyone dark skinned even if they are pakistani will get ridiculed and be called names by family friends and whole society its ingrained in pakistan society .

Its not Ramiz's fault. It looks like a comedy show and people laugh at all kinds of jokes. The lady is made a joke on African origin people. Ramiz seems to be going with the flow.

Viv was a handsome man in his prime. He had the swag to along with it.

Ishant Sharma called Darren Sammy 'kalu'. Many indians were laughing at that time too. Someone should remind Masaba about that. :inti

Yes but a lot of us apologised and it was a big issue. Masaba is annoyed here as it’s her mom and Dad they spoke about.

Not talking about her getting annoyed here but she thinks world stopped laughing at these jokes 30 years ago. She is not aware that people in India still crack and laugh at these racist jokes. Especially in North India, it is pretty common. Calling Northeast people Chinese, Chinkis etc. :inti

Kalu, Lambu, Chotu, Gori, Gora, Motu, Patlu are not racist in Indian context.

Indians still call Whites as Phirang. Everything is racist if we wear the woke goggles.

Correct me if I’m wrong can a brown person be racist to a black person vice versa.

Pretty much this. These shows are brutal...but it doesnt translate to a mainstream or even educated audience.

Kala isnt really even seen as racist in Subcontinent. We are behind the times. Difference is Indians have matured a bit

Where did he say any of that? He is a Pakistani poster, also in Indian media you can’t say such things anymore..

Must only be racist in the Pakistani context then. I don't think there is such a concept as woke in that country.

Disgusting.

Someone should recall monkey gate

But yes, this is offensive especially considering the background of the U.S vice president

Say these things now on TV and you will get called out except Lambu, Patlu.

There is a good discourse now thanks to Darren Sammy and others, fairness cream debate has also done the country well yo accept our color.

I remember my family members using the term “Kaale -Peele log” for South Indians, absolutely disgusting.
Even reluctantly recognising the need to be politically correct is a sign of some maturity.

Monocultural societies like the subcontinent will always be more backward as far as racism goes, they don't really have a mix of races who will take offence. Even this Masaba is an outlier, you won't find many like her in India.

You might get favoured for having a light skin, but that is within the south Asian diaspora. It needs racial variety to make people mind their language. If Pakistan had African heritage people they would be called out more.

casual racism is just way too common in our society . Most wouldn't find anything wrong with it , some might even defend it by saying its our culture . It no secret that dark folk are butt of jokes in Pak . Not just dark but any kind of body shaming is considered funny .

India has racial variety.. South East North look very different from each other, even Pakistanis have it compared to other countries in Asia.

Now someone laughing is offensive to some Indians.

I have no idea who Masaba Gupta is but surely these people have better things to do?

It seems Indians want Pakistanis to bow down to them, sadly some are , apologising to them for anything a Pakistani does.

I am a Bangladeshi man with a slightly dark skin (I am darker than many fair-skinned Bangladeshis).

I got called "kalu" many times. I didn't mind. It is common in subcontinent.

Having said that, I would never call someone "kalu" because I am a kalu myself.

Ramiz should be careful definitely.

They spoke about her mother and father…

Agree.

Ramiz just laughed. He didn't call anyone any name.

In a gathering, when other people laugh, one may laugh just to blend in. It is spontaneous.

Masaba should've criticized the person who said it (not Rameez).

Correct me if I’m wrong can a brown person be racist to a black person vice versa.
When you say brown I presume you mean Pakistani/Indian? If so, then absolutely they can be.

Also, on this subject, the comment is bang out of order and Ramiz Raja should know better.

Also, any insinuation from anyone that this is solely a Pakistani problem is seriously deluded. This is a sub continent problem, where the mindset is very backwards.

They spoke about her mother and father…

Ive not seen it and yes attacking parents is wrong but Ramiz only laughed. Sometimes people laugh out of shock or poor understanding.

Regardless my point is who are India or Indians to tell Pakistanis how to behave? What is more pathetic is Pakistanis actually condemning someone because an Indian wants them too.

Fact is due to the World Cup, India media watching Pak guys like hawks

Once this is over, no one will care what Ramiz or Razzaq says.

I doubt it will stop.

Imo Indians are happy thinking they can now control Pakistan.

The self humiliation Pakistanis have shown when India refused to play in Pakistan in Asia cup, only then to run over there to play pathetic cricket, Indians now think they can control Pakistanis.

I dont care if or what anyone from Pak says, regardless of how poor it is, it will never make me say sorry or condemn anyone because an Indian or India wants me too.

Pakistanis need to have some self respect.

Noone will say anything in India if you call Brits Phirangis.

Colour based comments are not common on Indian tv these days.

Ramiz is free to laugh at whatever he wants.

Blacks need to grow a thick skin. Not every Kaala reference needs to be taken personally.

They look different because they are different nations. India can't even claim Kashmir, Bengal or Punjab, yet you have the temerity to claim India has racial variety.

What does india , kashmir or punjab has to do with this thread?

You guys really need to stay on the topic or else that post has to be removed.
