List of sixes per innings among major T20 playing countries. Afghanistan played against some minnows. So their stats have to be taken with a pinch of salt. But there is big hitting ability there. Despite having relatively low six per innings(per batsman) ratio India and Pakistan have registered lot more wins in the last 3 years.

Good post and an area that we need to improve. Whilst we have a good win-loss ratio in T20s recently we still need to add more power to our batting. Maybe Hussain Talat and Asif Ali can help with this.

You can't always restrict the opposition to low totals that you chase down, there will be games where your batting will be challenged to score 200+ which could happen at the next T20 WC.

If the opposition has scored 200+ against we have already lost 75% of the match. The only hope would be Fakhar scoring a brisk 70 odd.

T20 is about batting. We need to improve. Our bowling won't always save us.

This stat has improved in the past year or so as we have moved on from the likes of Shehzad

The era when we were the top six hitting team, everyone was crying about singles and doubles. The end results matter more than the no of sixes hit or singles or doubles taken. Based on this criteria Afridi is a GOAT batsman.

This is an area we should improve on. Yes we are no 1 T20 team but there is no batsman apart from Fakhar who can instill fear in the opposition ranks. Our bowling is excellent but we if we want to win the WT20 2020 in Australia, we need to replace Malik, Shehzad and maybe even Babar and Sarfaraz by solid big hitters who can take the game away in few overs.

Imo, every batsman in top 7 of T20 line up should have the ability to hit sixes against both spinners and fast bowlers apart from maybe one stabilizing batsman like Babar.

Our top 6 in T20s include Babar, Sarfraz and Malik so this Stat isn't surprising at all. Also this is an area we massively need to work on as not every day Fakhar, Faheem or Asif Ali would bail us out at the deep end with their Gung ho Kamikaze Style approach.

The only guy who has some proper middle ground to this problem is Talat but he's way too untested in the International circuit for us to completely rely on him.

Shadab too is someone who can defend/attack accordingly but he comes in at #7 however in a 20 over game that's on most occasions becomes inconsequential.

Babar needs to get some meat on those bones and learn to tee off if necessary or we could be in some real trouble down the line.

What??

Malik has been our best T20 player, always seen him with high strike rates

I am not a Malik hater/basher but I've followed his career from day 1 back in 1999 and in the twilight of his career I wouldn't be too confident with him trying to forcefully hack his way against a genuine seamer.

Yes! The guy becomes a Legend against spinners and slow medium pacers but against fast bowlers I only see him struggling to the extent that he starts wasting balls to get his eye in. The same goes for Sarfraz - nothing to do with their ability but that's just age catching up to these blokes!

no you havent
shehzad is still in your national t20 team

You're right, he got picked against Scotland. In my opinion he is one of the reasons why we don't hit sixes. He has 30 sixes out of 55 innings, for an opener that's horrible

This is an awful stat despite having played fielded full strength sides against very mediocre sides such as Zimbabwe, Scotland, Ireland, WI & SL B, World XI and etc.

Pakistan's batting falls beneath NZ, WI, SA and India, Aus and Eng who are hitting sixes every 2.50 to 3 overs.

Why does it matter?
It's better to hit 3 fours in an over instead of hitting one six and getting out the next ball.
Looks like one of Shahid Afridi's fans made this thread.

Babar proved in the last game with 13 4s that you don’t necessarily need loads of sixes ...30 4s is good enough & the odd six

Well those sixes made difference for SA.

Unfortunately Pakistan do not have strong consistent power hitters , not even in domestic level.

It does matter It mattered yday because when a six or two was needed the team couldnt come up with it

yup. Also when a free hit comes, you back yourself to clear the boundary rather than try to pierce the gap. Who was that guy who wasted that free hit? lol was it Talat? in the over all grandscheme of things a six there would have made their chase easier.

Babar is our best player and he has come on leaps and bounds but he struggles to hit sixes. Get him into the gym and develop his hitting power. The other thing I noticed about him is that his hands are a little too far apart to get enough power to hit sixes, Miandad had the same problem later in his career.

To be honest he should let him be what he is. Attempting to maximize his job could backfire. He could hit a couple in the air get out and lose confidence. It is the job of others. Kohli rarely hits sixes. He hits only when it is absolutely needed. Babar is a slight guy. But i think Imam has potential to be a big hitter.

Kohli rarely hits sixes. He hits only when it is absolutely needed. Babar is a slight guy. But i think Imam has potential to be a big hitter.

Kohli can hit sixes at will against the spinners because he has the power, Babar doesn't. Babar is an excellent player but improved hitting in OdI and T20 Cricket and his ability to play spin better in tests will kick him onto another level.

No, Kohli can loft spinners because he has foot work against spin, Babar struggles against spinners and his biggest struggle is to measure the length from spinners, for which he has been out to off spinner many times caught on wrong foot - either going back to pitched up ball or trying to loft spinners with horizontal bat on front foot, cramping himself. You can bring the worlds strongest man but he won’t clear 70 metre boundary if shift of body weight isn’t perfect. Rohit Sharma can pull even better than Kohli or AdV can switch hit longer than most PAK players - it’s not for power or body weight or muscle.

I read lots of theory about power hitting - no one yet has explained me how Malik lofts spinners 100+ metres on slow UAE tracks or how 5’4” Mushi has one of the highest % of runs from contribution from six.

Timing and footwork are no doubt issue for him against spin but I still think that in his case, he lacks the raw power.

Not a big deal IMO. Look at the 4s scored by Pakistan. They are next only to India in 2nd place. Sixers are risky and it could be a strategy to cut down on risks at the top as the batting line up is brittle.
There could be an improvement in sixers at the death but you have Malik operating against pacers in the death overs. Edging pacers to the right and left of the keeper don't result in sixers.

Good to see india has improved in T20 batting.

This was 9 years back. Karthik was very thin. Thinner than Babar Aazm

For a small framed guy he is an incredible six hitter.

6
Mendis to Karthik, SIX runs, three in a row! Karthik has got the Kotla going crazy! Mendis slips up a full toss and Karthik dumps that behind midwicket for six more, what an innings this has turned out to be
18.2
6
Mendis to Karthik, SIX runs, powerful shot and up comes a splendid half-century! Karthik slog-sweeps against the turn and goes flat over deep midwicket
18.1
6
Mendis to Karthik, SIX runs, good shot from Karthik, reaches out and chips with the turn, getting six over long-on, not hit hard but just used his wrists

Shouldn't you consider all boundaries? The return on any boundaries is similarly situated, compared to 1s and 2s.

For example: Kohli's a good boundary hitter, but he rarely, if ever goes for sixes

Just wondering what the stats are from the bowling perspective. WHich teams have conceded the most sixes and fours?

He can find boundaries at will even outside power play as he places superbly.

Thank you..The batting stats should be taken from this perspective as well. Pakistan scores less sixes, concedes less sixes as well. Pak concede the lowest number of runs in boundaries and also score fewer runs in boundaries than most teams. It has to be a combination of the pitches Pakistan play on, the excellent bowling quality of Pak and also to a small extent, relatively poor striking ability of Pak batsmen (sixers). Not as big an issue as most people think.

Big hitting has been a problem for Pakistan in recent years & this has shown in the 1st 2 T20 games vs SA.

The batsmen played well in both games, but it was simply not possible to see where the big hitting would come from to convert a 170ish score to a 190ish score.

Afridi provided this for Pakistan for many years, and Razzaq was an excellent big hitter as well. Other then that we really haven't been able to produce big hitters. Hussain Talat, Asif Ali & even Hasan Ali can hit 6s occasionally, however, they are not consistent enough with the clean hitting.

We desperately need a couple of big hitters down the order around the 5/6/7 mark in the batting order in T20 cricket.

You cant swing the bat quickly if you dont have power.

DO you seriously see Sehwag as man with power. He is very flabby. These bats don't weigh more than 3 lbs for most. Pretty much any adult can swing. Have you seen Harmanpreet Kaur? She is so fragile too. She hits 85 meter six effortlessly.

The power may not be obvious but its certainly there but i take your point on timing being more important.

Big hitting has been discouraged in Pakistan Cricket unfortunately. Players who play their natural game are discarded after failures.

Removing the minnows, India has the best W/L ratio.

Including minnows, Afghanistan has the best W/L ratio

If Pakistan wants their batsmen to hit more sixes they have to get physically stronger. Change their diet to eat more like Indians do, that is eat more vegetarian and less meat. For example, the six hitting champ Rohit is a southern Indian brahmin who doesn't eat meat or maybe small amounts.

Lame.

It’s alot about timing, Rohit is a lazy fat boy who does not look strong at all, but he has this ability of picking the length early and times the ball beautifully.

And a poster also mentioned Dinesh Karthik, he looks like a thin chicken, but again it is about pure timing.

Hussain Talat looks stronger than every indian cricketer but he hardly connects. So being strong is good of course but if you don’t have the technique or timing that will not help you much.

I don't think you quite understood what my post was about :))

Also cast your memory back to Tendulkar's debut series. He was all of 16. Smashed Qadir for 4 sixes in a row. Bats were not this good those days.

List of sixes per innings among major T20 playing countries. Afghanistan played against some minnows. So their stats have to be taken with a pinch of salt. But there is big hitting ability there. Despite having relatively low six per innings(per batsman) ratio India and Pakistan have registered lot more wins in the last 3 years.

if a team has risen to no 1 in t20 rankings by hitting the least number of sixes, one might be tempted to conclude from this that the value of six hitting in t20 is overstated. of course every one would love to have a peak gayle in their team, but if no such talent is available, perhaps one is better served by a game plan that builds on the strengths that one does possess, as demonstrated by an impressive winning record against all comers.

the idea that our set up in t20 desperately requires the injection of a new types of player, makes little sense, logically speaking. we lost two matches playing more or less the same team that has hitherto won every series, 11 series running, shifting form and injuries notwithstanding, and has done so against teams that have far better big hitters.

the fact that players failed to perform now is not an explanation; it merely begs the question, why did they perform previously? why did they bowl with discipline for 11 series running, and suddenly loose that ability? nor is it sufficient to argue that t20s are just a lottery, anyone can win on their day etc. if it is a lottery, how likely is that one team would win the jackpot 11 times in a row?

the argument that we are simply no good, and that this has finally been revealed, is just lazy. the question 'just how good are we really,' is a fool's question, because the answer will constantly change, depending on form, the players available, and of course results. the only useful and relevant question is: were we better or worse before, what changed, and how to do we build on this analysis to get better than we are now?

the constant variable here are the pakistani players. the roster is more or less the same. the variable that changed is the captaincy. the fact that this captain has not very good in odis and awful in tests does not change the fact that he has the best record in the world in past years, in t20s. he is doing something right in this format, and the simplest and therefore most persuasive explanation for our losses, in this format, is his absence.

does this mean that the team could not be improved, with better players? of course not. again, a peak gayle, even a sharjeel, would be welcomed with open arms. but going back to ttf's like ukmal because it is now believed that having this type of player in our midst is now of outmost priority, is misguided. pakistan could easily have won both of these games without any sixes. tighter bowling, and a more judicious approach in chasing would have done the trick.

or, to put it differently, there is more than one way to skin a cat.
