"Social media doubles pressure on players from both sides before Ind-Pakistan matches" : Wasim Akram

Sachin vs Wasim – The Gladiators

Two giants of the game, Sachin Tendulkar and Wasim Akram make their way to the stage amid huge cheer from the crowd present at the Lord's

Sachin Tendulkar on Wasim Akram

Sachin Tendulkar:
There was a period when I was a ball boy and Wasim was already representing the nation. To be able to play against Wasim Akram was something special

Tendulkar shares fond memories of Lord's Cricket Ground

Sachin Tendulkar:
I was just 10 years old when India won the World Cup final here in 1983. My journey started from that day. Coming to this ground will always be very special for me because I get nostalgic whenever I come here. Balwinder Sandhu and my batting hero Viv Richards are also present here today.

Sachin Tendulkar on facing Wasim, Waqar in his first Test

Sachin Tendulkar: When I went out to bat in Karachi in my first Test match and Wasim was bowling to me. He was going full steam. And by that time I was used to playing a few bouncers in first-class cricket. As a batsman I was prepared to play out a bouncer and then prepare for a half-volley or an inswinging yorker against Wasim. But he kept bowling bouncers at me and the yorkers never came in the first over I faced. Then I thought to myself, "welcome to Test cricket". At that time I had never faced as quick bowlers as Wasim and Waqar Younis. I had never faced that kind of hostility or skill from bowlers till then. I felt I was completely out of place back then as a 16-year-old. I kept thinking this was my final Test match. When I got out and was walking back to the dressing room I thought I wasn't meant for Test cricket. I felt like that for the first time in my life. I kept praying for another chance. But that was my feeling after the first Test match

Wasim Akram recalls what it was like bowling to Sachin Tendulkar

Wasim Akram:
When bowlers bowl to pinch-hitters like Sanath Jayasuriya, Shahid Afridi and the likes, we always know we have a chance against these cricketers. But when Sachin Tendulkar came to the crease, I knew he would be playing proper cricketing shots and not give his wicket away. The margin becomes lesser. When Sachin started to open the innings, India started winning more matches.

Sachin Tendulkar recollects his final Ranji game

Sachin Tendulkar:
When I was playing my final Ranji game in Haryana, Ajay Jadeja was the captain of the opposition team. And I know him very well, whenever he is under pressure he tends to talk to all his players constantly. So I had told my teammates not to talk to Ajay Jadeja. He will come and talk to you but you don't respond. He kept talking to me, he used to call me skippy, and kept asking me how I was. But I just looked through him without any response. These are the things, batsman try to ease pressure by doing such things. We as batsman always try to own the 22-yards and dictate terms and the bowlers have the same mentality, to make life as difficult for the batsman as possible.

Pressure of India vs Pakistan matches on the players

Wasim Akram:
Social media doubles the pressure on the players from both sides before India-Pakistan matches. Back in the day we used to leave home and our mothers used to say don't lose to India. People on the road used to say the same. This was added pressure. Same used to happen to India players. People don't understand how the pressure builds on us players.

Sachin Tendulkar on losing his first World Cup final in 2003

Sachin Tendulkar:
Yes there was regret. It was one of the biggest disappointments of my life because we played so well in that tournament. Before that our batsmen were not in good space because we played in New Zealand were they prepared lively pitches. When we went to South Africa we started gaining confidence with every match. The only team that we lost to in that entire tournament was Australia. I felt we were charged up in the finals, may be a bit too much. Sometimes when your aggression is not controlled, the result tends to go the other way then. If given a chance again we would approach that game differently.

Wasim Akram on sledging Sachin Tendulkar

Wasim Akram:
Tried sledging Sachin Tendulkar but then we realised he would not react. Akhtar tried, Waqar tried. Some guys would get upset but Sachin would get more motivated. I remember when India were about to come to Pakistan - we heard about a young sensation coming from India. And we thought how could a 16-year-old boy playing Test cricket be so good?. But he did not react to provocation from our pacers. Top batsmen do not react. I would get very annoyed when people smiled back.. On that tour, Pakistan got to know who Sachin Tendulkar was. We realised this guy was something special.

Harbhajan and Mohammad Yousuf's fight before 2003 World Cup match

Wasim Akram:
Both teams had lunch together during which I suddenly saw Harbhajan Singh and Mohammad Yousuf started arguing. And they were very good friends as well. They were having a go at each other. I went up to both of them and gave them a moutful. I made them both shake hands and then told them to go to their respective rooms. I had told them in the morning not to pull each other's legs before the game. But they didn't listen and started fighting.

Sachin Tendulkar on his World Cup 2019 favourites

Sachin Tendulkar:
I think England, Australia and India are the favourites to reach the semis. And New Zealand I have a feeling will be the fourth time. In terms of the India vs Pakistan match, I think India are in a better space to win that game.
