SRINAGAR, India (AP) — Indian soldiers fatally shot a young man at a checkpoint in the Himalayan region of Kashmir on Wednesday, residents and officials said, triggering anti-India protests and clashes in the disputed region.

India’s Central Reserve Police Force said the man was driving a car and ignored signals to stop at two checkpoints in the western outskirts of Srinagar, the region’s main city. It said the soldiers feared sabotage because a military convoy was passing by at the time.

It said in a statement that a soldier shot the victim “when the car didn’t stop despite warning shots.”

The victim’s father, Ghulam Nabi Shah, denied the police account, saying his son did not drive through any checkpoints, and that soldiers first stopped him and then shot him.

A witness, Firdousa, said the victim stopped his car when soldiers signaled him. “A security official told him something to which he replied that he had some emergency. They let him go but as he was getting into his vehicle, they shot him in the back,” she said. “He was killed deliberately. He did no wrong.”

As news of his death spread in his village, hundreds of men and women began chanting “Go India, go back” and “We want freedom” and demanded that the victim’s body be returned to the family for burial. Authorities did not immediately hand over the body.

As government forces moved in to stop the villagers from marching, hundreds threw stones at the troops, who fired shotgun pellets and tear gas to quell the protests. There were no immediate reports of casualties in the clashes.

Authorities shut down mobile internet service in the area, a common Indian tactic in the region when such protests erupt.

Indian forces have imposed a stringent lockdown in the region since late March to combat the coronavirus. Despite the lockdown, India has stepped up its counterinsurgency operations while militants have also continued their attacks on government forces and alleged informants.

Indian soldiers man checkpoints and bunkers across the region, where an armed resistance to Indian rule has raged since 1989. Residents make little secret of their anger at the troops’ presence and support the rebels’ call for the territory to be united either under Pakistani rule or as an independent country.

India and Pakistan each administer part of Kashmir, but both claim the region in its entirety. About 70,000 people have been killed in the uprising and the ensuing Indian military crackdown.

Based on the news article the “man” skipped the security barrier despite warning shots in what is one of the most sensitive areas in terms of safety and security in the world.

I am not sure how one can sympathize with that, even if let’s say for argument sake he was a superhero at night who saved the poor and served justice.

So you occupy their land and now want them to listen to your orders. Indian brutality on show..

That's Indian land and everyone must adhere to Indian laws as long as they're on Indian land. Nothing brutal in that.

kashmir is a hindu land i.e.. land of our ancestors, hindus. Hindus are the original abhorigines of the land and hence most of the Jammu & kashmir has towns, cities with hindu names like srinagar, anantnag, jammu, etc.,

On topic, it is unfortunate that this young man died , may god bless his soul.

But if army's version is true then this young man should have stopped after warning shots but if their version is wrong then there should a strict enquiry on these soldiers and they must be punished as per law.

A hindu land with majority Muslims? Makes a lot of sense that :) Keep living in your dreams, reality is that India is an oppressor and you are part of this oppression.

You mean based on the Indian police's statement, because the other side has also been presented in the article.

Firstly yes it is a Hindu land, now the people living in it may be practicing Muslims but that doesn’t make them foreigners, they are an ethnic group with Hindu ancestry and now follow Islam that’s about it.

Now aren’t they not allowed to practice Islam in India? Last time I checked India had the 2nd or 3rd largest Muslim population in the world , so not sure what makes the Kashmiri ethnic group so different from the rest of India that they want their own country?

They have a Cultural proximity to India given the origin of Kashmir and it’s significance to Hinduism and the Kashmiris who are supposed to be descendants of the great sage Kashyap after whom Kashmir itself is named and not some foreign invader. It’s not like they are from a different part of the world. Now if they claim to be descendants of some medieval invaders than obviously they can’t claim Kashmir, I mean there was already a partition once on the 2 nation theory so they are welcome to leave.

A hindu land with majority Muslims

Not exactly... Jammu region is a hindu majority with muslim minority , ladakh doesn't have muslim majority as well

Regarding kashmir valley I was talking about ancestors being hindu which is undeniable fact

True but the on the other hand police's side is skipped at the headline to drive the agenda and potray anti India narrative.
I can write the exact same article with following headline "Kashmiri Youth shot dead because he ignored police orders as per Indian police". Its the way how we want to twist the english language.

Correct no?

There is nothing factually wrong with the headline. Your hypothetical headline is providing a reason whereas the current headline is generic. "Soldiers shoot man" - Yes, that's what happened...

This is a Pakistani-origin/sympathizing website. Why do you expect them to put forward your narrative, when your country's majority of news outlets are not unbiased.

When expecting all these rights, learn also to give others the same rights that you demand.

I spent half an hour deciding whether I should even bother replying to this post.

So what is Hindu ancestory? Can India claim areas of Pakistan too as they have hindu ancestory? What about Bangladesh, Nepal etc Even if they had Hindu heritage, these are humans and you cant dictate them because their ancestors were Hindus many generations back.

They want freedom from India and we should respect that as oppose to compare them with other Muslims in India. Why should they leave their homeland (Kashmir)? They are the locals of the land. They do not want a link with India so cultural proximity is irrelevant with India. Anyways, am out as it is useless debating with an extremist.

Yes. If all these were princely states and their rulers signed an instrument of accession to India, we could.

Disclaimer: Some might not consider "Kashmirwalla" to be a relevant enough source. I think it must have its bias like all media, however at least it is able to cover incidents happening in the Valley. What is preventing other more relevant media outlets from going to Kashmir and providing us with a well-informed view.

One does have to wonder why a security force would shoot at an innocent unprovoked? It doesn't make any sense. The relatives could be twisting the facts.

Mental health issues perhaps?

In recent days members of Indian paramilitaries (CRPF) in Kashmir have committed suicide.

Why do you think they suspend the internet whenever something like this happens? May be they don't want pictures, videos, reaction of locals or truth to come out.

Another day another brutal killing in Kashmir. Some mental ******* justifying it I can only tell them may something like this happen to ur loved ones then only u will feel the pain. The father of the youth is an SI in JKP. No one is safe in Kashmir.

The things have taken a very interesting turn.

His uncle, a cop and a Assistant Sub-Inspector no less claims to be traveling alongside him and rejects the story presented by the CRPF.

Cop Uncle of Slain Budgam Boy: ‘This’s a Cold-Blooded Murder’

Youth-Killed-by-Abid-Bhat.jpg

As another family in Kashmir lost their young son and plunged into mourning in the revered month of Ramzan, the joint forces in Kashmir termed it as a ‘Naka-violation’ killing in their statements. However, the policeman accompanying the boy tells an entirely different story.

BEERWAH, Budgam — The uncle of slain youth killed by Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in the Kawoosa area of Budgam in Kashmir on Wednesday contested police and paramilitary claim that his nephew fled two checkpoints when fired upon.

Ghulam Hassan Shah, Assistant Sub-Inspector in Jammu and Kashmir Police, was travelling along with the slain youth identified as Me’rajudin Shah, when their car was attacked.

This is a cold-blooded murder,” Shah told Kashmir Observer.

Mehraj was fired from point-blank range,” he added. “Jammu and Kashmir police and CRPF jointly killed my nephew out of sheer frustration.

On Wednesday morning, Shah, a resident of Beerwa Budgam, asked Me’raj to drop him at Srinagar’s Police Control Room (PCR), where he is currently posted and was waiting for his dead nephew’s body when this story was written.

“On reaching near a Naka at Kawoosa village,” Shah said, “I showed my identity card to a J&K Police Hawaldar and insisted that I should be allowed to move. Telling us to go, the policeman signalled at CRPF jawan who immediately opened fire on us. The bullet pierced the chest of my nephew and within no time he lost a lot of blood.”

However, Budgam Police in its statement said the slain civilian travelling in a vehicle jumped from two Naka points in Kawoosa, Narbal after which CRPF men fired at him.

“A convoy of army at that point in time was passing through the adjacent road and fearing a sabotage, the CRPF jawan of C/141, manning this Naka, fired warning shots,” Pankaj Singh, Srinagar-based CRPF spokesman, told Kashmir Observer.

“This civil car was driving in the wrong direction of the road and that was even more alarming. When the car didn’t stop, despite warning shots, the jawan fired at the car and in turn, the driver was hit on his left shoulder.”

Many CRPF men, Singh said, were killed at Nakas, including in Pulwama last year. “People have to understand and cooperate with us,” he said.

But the cop uncle of the slain youth rubbishes these claims.

“This is a blatant lie,” Shah said. “They want to cover-up the crime. I am myself a police officer. Why won’t I stop my car? Truth is, we stopped our car and then the jawan fired upon us. Had we fled from the spot, our car would have been damaged after they fired upon us.”

The youth was shifted to Srinagar’s SHMS in a critical condition, where Dr Nazir Choudhary, medical superintendent of the hospital, declared him brought dead.

Me’raj was a class 12th dropout and was running a Khidmat centre at his village. He is survived by 3 brothers and 3 sisters. He was just 15, when his mother died.

“Even if he had fled from the Naka,” Owais Ahamd Shah, Me’raj’s cousin, told Kashmir Observer, “the forces could’ve fire warning shots in air or fired at his tyres. Was killing the only option?”

Political Parties Condemn Killing, Demand Probe

Political parties in Kashmir on Wednesday condemned the killing of a civilian by CRPF personnel in Budgam district and called for an impartial enquiry to punish the guilty.

Peer Mehrajuddin was killed when CRPF personnel opened fire on his vehicle. He was rushed to SMHS hospital in the city where he succumbed to his injuries, according to police.

Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC), in a statement, strongly condemned the killing of Mehrajuddin.

“The firing should have been avoided. The loss of innocent lives has the potential to lead to further alienation of the people,” the JKPCC said.

The party demanded a probe into the circumstances, which led to the killing of the civilian in order to fix the responsibility.

While reacting to the incident, the PDP called for an inquiry.

“Shooting a civilian dead cannot be how a democracy operates. Eagerness of few trigger happy individuals to replicate Delhi Police model of destruction & violence in Budgam is detestable. An enquiry should be initiated & guilty taken to task,” the party tweeted.

Former chief minister Omar Abdullah termed the incident as unfortunate.

“Very unfortunate. The circumstances surrounding this shooting need to be impartially investigated & findings made known. My condolences to the family of the deceased,” he tweeted.

One thing to remember here is that the JK Police works along side the CRPF to fight the militants, in return the militants have threatened the police force regardless of their religion and targeted them. In the recent Handwara incident where a colonel was killed alongside him a local policemen died too.

Randomly stopping a car and shooting someone in the head just for fun vs Shooting someone for not obeying security protocols in a sensitive zone

I wonder which is more believable from a common sense perspective.

Good and critical thinking.

Here is more of that critical line of thought.

The dude was a local person and grew up in the highly militarized zone. His father is a cop his uncle is assistant sub-inspector in the police. He was familiar with the protocol and knew what to do on checkpoints.

So far there is no evidence that the person was active in militant circles. In fact it's rather unlikely considering that his father and uncle by the virtue of being part of the police force are hostile towards militants and hunt them down together with the rest of Indian forces to keep India safe.

The CRPF has so far not mentioned any weapons or other harmful stuff found in his possession. It seems there was nothing in his car that was worth hiding from a militancy point of view.

Which leads to:

Randomly deciding one day to ignore the security protocol and ignoring the warning shots while being the son of a cop and your cop uncle is sitting right beside you vs ???????????

A lot of confusion and question marks around this incident hopefully there will be a thorough and independent investigation.

What are the odds he would grow up to be a world famous scientist or something or some kind of a positive influencer on the world even if his father was alive anyways?

You seem to have already figured everything out just by reading the thread title!

Slowdown!

The slain youth comes from a family of policemen who have been fighting the militants alongside the Indian Security Forces. Have some respect!

It's not easy to be a local Muslim cop in Kashmir defending the integral part of Indian state, when you are surrounded by "Azadi" chanting youth and a militancy inspired by religious extremism.

At least allow some room for innocent until proven guilty here!

You do realize what a great set back this could turn out to be for the Indian state, right?

It would be pretty bad for Indian state's image in the Kashmir and among the easily brainwashed youth, if even policemen, who are anti-militancy and pro-India can't properly protect their kin and are quickly condemned and seen as liars without being given any chance to demand justice.

Independent investigation is necessary before we can come to any conclusion and can label him a militant and a traitor justifying his killing.

Not surprised to see pathetic bhakhts and some NRI's with fake patriotism justifying it. :inti

No one in this thread can claim to be more patriotic towards the Indian state than the father of this man and his uncle.

Both are local Kashmiri Muslims and part of the local police force, which is highly controversial among the "azaadi" chanting youth and its members have been declared "traitors of Kashmir" by the militants, who repeatedly threaten, target and attack them irrespective of their religion.

Of course many Indians outside Kashmir aren't aware of such fine details or don't pay attention to. I don't fault them, the Indian media has trained them to think in a certain way.

The day the Quislings and Mir Jafars realize they are as much fair game for the occupation forces as the rest of Kashmir, perhaps the tide will turn inexorably. A case in point being the young man's uncle.

Don't waste your time, you were on this list months ago.

Is that how the ignore list works? What's the point if you still get to see that they quoted you. Ideally an ignore list should make it so that they disappear off the face of the forum as far as you're concerned.

What are the odds he would grow up to be a world famous scientist or something or some kind of a positive influencer on the world even if his father was alive anyways?

This is an absurd way of thinking. Expected tho, considering the way Indians have been brainwashed since time immemorial.

You are defending terrorism here.

Let me explain to you by an example: may be that guy who killed Indian military personnel in Pulwana did the right thing? What were the odds of those militants ending up in IOK and killing that guy's family? Maybe by getting rid of them, he saved some oppression to his people?

See my point?

Perhaps, you Indians should start thinking on an alternative way instead of murdering kids and then pathetically defend murder on Pakistani forums?

And forget it, Kashmiris will never submit to India's tyranny. India can send 5 million soldiers in the valley, outcome will remain the same. That's been a fact so far and I don't see it changing.

Good that people are covering the story and the protests. Hopefully brave people will continue to do so despite Indian authorities stopping it

I agree but the good thing is when I browse through I don't have to see constant rubbish.

The Foreign Office on Saturday rejected Indian army chief General MM Naravane's recent comments in which he levelled terrorism allegations and hurled threats against Pakistan.

In an interview to Indian media outlets earlier this week, Naravane had alleged that Pakistan has created a "new terror group" in Indian-occupied Kashmir called 'The Resistance Front'.

"I would rather call it Terror Revival Front. It is another terrorist organisation by another name. This is a terrorist organisation supported by its proxies across the border. They will be dealt with appropriately," he was quoted as saying.

Repeating allegations of 'infiltration' from across the border, Naravane claimed that a recent spike in the number of 'terror incidents' in the Kashmir valley was due to the changing weather conditions which he alleged allowed militants to enter the region.

He claimed that Pakistan may try to carry out "extra action" to draw attention to the Kashmir issue.

Responding to the allegations, FO Spokesperson Aisha Farooqui in a statement on Saturday said Pakistan "reject Indian army chief's recent comments levelling allegations against Pakistan and hurling threats".

"These are part of India’s desperate attempts to divert the world’s attention from Indian state terrorism and egregious violations of human rights in Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir," she added.

The statement emphasised that the indigenous Kashmiri resistance being faced by India is a "direct consequence of India’s unabated oppression and brutalisation of Kashmiris".

It said India’s attempts to portray the legitimate Kashmiri struggle for self-determination as “terrorism” will not succeed.

"India’s attempted diversions, misrepresentations and continued belligerence imperil peace and security in South Asia," the press release said.

It stressed that the world community should take cognisance of the situation and "urge India to act responsibly in the interest of regional peace and stability".

There has been a flurry of allegations in recent weeks from the Indian army chief, Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and other officials about Pakistan supporting militant groups in occupied Kashmir, so-called ‘terrorist launch-pads’ on the Pakistani side of the LoC, and infiltration bids.

The allegations, repeatedly denied by Islamabad as "baseless", accompanied an intensification of ceasefire violations at the LoC. There have been more than 900 violations so far this year, most of which have targeted populated areas with artillery fire, heavy-calibre mortars and automatic weapons.

Anti-India protests have continued for a second day on Monday in Indian-administered Kashmir after the Indian forces killed at least nine rebels in the disputed region.

The rebels, including three commanders, were killed in separate gunfights with the security forces in Shopian district, some 70km (43 miles) south of the capital, Srinagar. The fighting began on Sunday.

Four rebels were killed in the Pinjora area on Monday morning after the government forces set up a cordon and search operation when they received intelligence about the presence of the fighters, who either want Kashmir's independence or a merger with Muslim-majority Pakistan.

Five other rebels were killed in a gunfight with the forces in Shopian district's Reban area on Sunday afternoon. Police said three soldiers were wounded.

"Nine militants of the Hizbul Mujahideen outfit, including its three top commanders, have been neutralized in less than 24 hours," state police chief Dilbagh Singh told reporters on Monday.

Singh said the Indian security forces have eliminated 22 rebels, including six top commanders, during the past two weeks.

Police said 73 rebels have been killed in the Muslim-majority region this year.

In April alone, more than two dozen rebels and about a dozen Indian troops were killed, the most in any month since August 2019, when India revoked the region's semi-autonomous status and statehood, and imposed direct federal rule.

The latest killings sparked protests and clashes as hundreds of residents tried to march to the site of the battle.

Chanting slogans demanding an end to India's occupation of Kashmir, demonstrators threw stones at police and paramilitary soldiers, who fired shotgun pellets and tear gas.

No casualties were immediately reported in the clashes.

India has stepped up its operations across Kashmir in recent months, with almost daily fighting reported along the rugged and mountainous frontier that divides Kashmir between India and Pakistan.

Since 1989, the conflict has resulted in nearly 70,000 deaths, most of them civilians.

India accuses Pakistan of arming and training the anti-India rebels. Pakistan denies this, saying it offers only moral and diplomatic support to the rebels and to Kashmiri civilians who oppose Indian rule.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Monday rejected Indian foreign ministry's "mischievous" attempt to twist the remarks of Prime Minister Imran Khan over terrorism.

“The Indian Ministry of External Affairs’ statement of June 5 is a continuation of their desperate campaign to divert international attention from India’s state terrorism in Indian occupied Kashmir (IoK) and its continuing crimes against the Kashmiri people,” the Foreign Office said in a statement.

The FO added that the Indian foreign ministry even "twisted" the remarks of PM Imran, condemning the "mischievous attempt".

The FO reminded New Delhi once again that Pakistan has been the principal victim of terrorism, including terrorism perpetrated against Pakistanis from across the border.

"Tens of thousands of our citizens have lost their lives, while thousands of our valiant law enforcement personnel have made the ultimate sacrifice in Pakistan’s resolute fight against terrorism,” the FO reminded New Delhi. It added that even Pakistan’s sacrifices and contribution to combating terrorism were recognised by the international community.

“Senior Indian officials and other Indian commentators have frequently boasted about destabilising parts of Pakistan and of their nefarious designs to use terrorism as state policy against Pakistan,” said the FO. It added that the "Hindutva-driven saffron terror" against India’s minorities, Indian state-terrorism in IoK, and India’s use of terrorism as an instrument to destabilise its neighbours had been exposed.

"It is India that is seeking to distort and misrepresent the report of the UN Security Council’s Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team to promote its anti-Pakistan propaganda,” argued the FO.

In its statement, Pakistan expressed the hope that the international community will not be misled by India's statements.

“Pakistan’s role as a facilitator to the ongoing peace process in Afghanistan has been widely acknowledged by the relevant international partners. Pakistan had, since the beginning of the Afghan Peace process, alerted the international community about the role of spoilers in the region, who do not wish to see peace, stability and prosperity return to Afghanistan and waste no opportunity to create obstacles in the successful advancement of the peace process,” said the FO.

“We wish to reiterate that all relevant partner countries must guard against such attempts, while supporting the process for an inclusive and comprehensive political settlement in Afghanistan,” it said.

Last week, the Indian foreign ministry spokesperson had alleged that Pakistan is the "nerve centre" of terrorism, according to Zee News.

The Indian foreign ministry spokesperson had claimed that Prime Minister Imran Khan had "admitted" last year that Pakistan hosts 30,000-40,000 terrorists on its home soil.
