IT IS no secret Shane Warne has become something of a mentor — indeed a confidant — to Pakistan twirler Yasir Shah.

The greatest leg-spinner of all-time has offered advice, coaching and tutelage to the bowler he believes is the best wrist-spinner in world cricket.

Shah grew up idolising Warne, and now he is heeding his message.

But behind closed doors and on text message conversations between the two, what has Warne’s message been to Shah?

It’s been pretty simple, Warne told Channel 9 on Thursday.

“Basically I tried to get him to a little bit more patient,” Warne said.

“He is a bundle of energy and has got all the toys. He’s got a straight one, a good leg-break that spins and a wrong-un.

“He approached me and I said I was more than happy to have a chat to him. Every time I’m there when he’s playing we catch up — like in England during (their) summer.”

Warne evidently said the right things to the 30-year-old in the UK back in June, with Shah becoming the first spinner since Englishman Derek Underwood in the 1970s to notch a 10-wicket haul at Lord’s.

It was one of Shah’s two 10-wicket Tests that complement his eight five-wicket hauls. Only one bowler in history has reached 100 wickets in fewer than Shah’s 17 Tests.

Now in his 20th, the bubbly spinner was quizzing Warne before play on Thursday once again.

“Today he was just asking how I liked the Gabba and what did I like to do here,” Warne said.

“I said getting them to drive is key and there is some good pace and bounce here. It’s not one of those wickets where you bowl fast and into the pitch. It’s one of those ones where you need to bowl a little bit slower and get the batsman driving.”

The ploy worked in the first session when Shah lulled Usman Khawaja forward. The left-hander, convinced he had reached the pitch of the ball, attempted to whip the Pakistani through the on-side, only for the pink Kookaburra to dip at the last moment.

All Khawaja could do in the split second he was deceived was to meekly chip it to Misbah-ul-Huq at short mid-wicket. He was out, and Shah was rapturous.

There is only one thing Warne wishes Shah would improve, and it’s not his bowling.

“He always loves a chat,” Warne continued.

“I just wish he’d get a bit of sleep. Sometimes he messages me very early in the morning for a tip and I’m just getting in!”

If Shah continues on his current trajectory, Warne may not be the only Aussie suffering from sleepless nights.

I am disappointed by Yasir's bowling in New Zealand and Australia.I thought him to be a world class leggy. But have to reconsider that.

I agree with Shehzad, Warne is a show-pony.

Another guy he obsesses over is Rahane.

"Oh Jinks Rahane, I spotted his terrific talent back at the Royals!"

"What a shot by Jinks! He always told me he loved hitting it through that gap."

Ahh in sure he is devastated by this

Yasir Shah needs to retire he is way past his best. In fact his best could never be any where close to world class.

Agreed.

Mahdi >>> Yasir

PS - Its Day-1 of 1st Test. So hold on to your opinions before shooting them out.

Man's bowled his heart out - just needed a good total to bowl at in 2nd innings but doesnt look likely (even though Pak will be chasing)

Mehedi Hasan is still a one series wonder. He may be flying now after playing on spinning track against English players who plays spin as much well as like my 3 year old son.But his plane is going to crush soon against decent opposition on tough conditions and probably it is going to happen in New Zealand.

Yasir has a long way to go to be labelled as world class.Mushtaq Ahmed was a versatile world class leggy who bowled match winning spells in Australia and New Zealand in an era of Wasim,Waqar,Shoib,Saqlain.I will be glad if Yasir can master that art.

Feel for him. I thought he was excellent and would've bagged a 5-fer with better captaincy and fielding.

The only advice Yasir needs is on how turn his leg spinner. Unless you are Anil Kumble, not turning the leg spinner is Sure fire way out of the team.

61 runs in 13 overs he bowled in first test.Didn't make any impact and was dropped in 2nd test.

Yes Yasir should retire from test cricket for going 13 overs without a wicket on a green pitch

Give the guy a chance. Good bowlers are developed and matured slowly. Very rarely do they arrive with a bang and remain on top. Yasir needs lots of support and a really intelligent team around him.

Respectable figures for a spinner bowling on Day 1 and Day 2 at the Gabba. Not sure why people are jumping on Yasir's back, he's the least of our problems.

All he needs is support from his captain to bowl to the field that he wants and his fielders to take their chances. Right now both aren't happening

Agreed but do you remember the hype after Lords. He is a good solid bowler but if I as a layman can see that his leg spinner is not turning then problems are around the corner.

Spin is not some mythical thing that only certain spinners can do, if the pitch allows for spin then the ball will spin.

If Yasir is not spinning the ball, it isn't because he can't spin the ball but because the pitch is flat.
