Sourav Ganguly, BCCI president and former India captain, hospitalised after chest pain

Former India cricket captain and BCCI president Sourav Ganguly was admitted to Woodlands Hospital in Kolkata on Saturday, after he complained of chest pain. He is currently undergoing treatment and is said to be in a stable condition.

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee wished the Indian cricket stalwart a speedy recovery and also confirmed in a tweet that he had suffered a ‘mild cardiac arrest’.

BCCI secretary and Ganguly’s close aid in the cricket board, Jay Shah, tweeted that Ganguly is responding well to treatment.

“I wish and pray for the speedy recovery of @SGanguly99. I’ve spoken to his family. Dada is stable and is responding well to the treatment,” Shah tweeted.

Speaking to news agency ANI, sources close to the former India skipper said that Ganguly complained of pain in the chest and might need angioplasty. “Dada (Sourav) complained of chest pain and was rushed to the hospital. He might need to undergo angioplasty. He is out of danger,” the source said.

The BCCI president had on Wednesday visited Eden Gardens and discussed preparations for the upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy with the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) president Avishek Dalmiya.

Other office-bearers of CAB including secretary Snehashis Ganguly and joint secretary Debabrata Das were also present at the stadium.

Earlier this week, Ganguly had also cleared the air about him joining politics ahead of West Bengal Assembly polls next year. He had stated that he went to meet the state’s Governor upon invitation.

“If the Governor wants to meet you, you have to meet him. So let us keep it like that,” said Ganguly.

West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar on Sunday met Ganguly to discuss various issues and agreed to visit Eden Gardens on his invitation.

“Had interaction with ‘Dada’ Saurav Ganguly, BCCI President at Raj Bhawan yesterday at 4.30 PM on varied issues. Accepted his offer for a visit to Eden Gardens, the oldest cricket ground in the country established in 1864,” tweeted the Governor.

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly is in a stable condition after having a heart attack on Saturday.

The 48-year-old president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is "responding well to treatment", the body's secretary Jay Shah said.

He developed chest pains while exercising and has now had surgery.

Ganguly played 113 Tests and 311 one-day internationals, captaining India in the longest format 49 times between 2000 and 2005.

Doctors said Ganguly had an angioplasty - a procedure to unblock a coronary artery - in hospital in Kolkata and would be monitored for 24 hours.

Ganguly becomes BCCI president
A left-handed batsman, Ganguly scored 7,212 Test runs and scored 16 centuries.

He is ninth on the all-time ODI run-scorers list with 11,363. He scored 22 hundreds in the 50-over format.

He took over as president of the Indian cricket board in October 2019.

India captain Virat Kohli tweeted: "Praying for your speedy recovery. Get well soon."

Inshallah he will get well soon. Very sad to hear but the good news is that he is stable and will hopefully make a full and fast recovery.

Wishing him speedy recovery.

I don’t know why retired cricketers are so susceptible to heart attacks that to at very young age? Does playing too much cricket put lot of stress on heart that tends to give up at early age? I read somewhere that American Footballers are prone to heart failure despite being physically fit.

Ganguly is THE reason why India's fighting mentality exists today.

The millennials need not bother with their analysis. You had to see India in the 80s/90s to see what a difference Ganguly made.

I also love his commentary. Very astute, unbiased, and a guy who is down to earth despite coming from a rich family.

I will never forget the camera shot in CT17 (I think?), where he sat with the crowd, eating his sandwiches, so cool he was, that no one noticed it was Ganguly until the camera panned on him and his face on the bigscreen .

He is one of 3 Indian cricketers worth remembering in my book, the other 2 are Gavaskar, and Dravid.

I sincerely pray he gets well soon asap.

Wishing him well. It can happen to anyone but Ganguly wears a lot of hats and obviously has a very stressful job.

Too young to get heart attack. Hopefully he comes back strong from this.

I'm not quite sure what a "minor cardiac arrest" is, because if the heart stops beating its always serious. But I'm glad he's stable and recovering well. He's always been a great fighter.

I am not a doctor, but I think a lot of factors like genes/family history, stress levels and lifestyle are two of the main factors.

You can be physically fit but you can't "train" your heart.

Anyways, get well SG. Forza!

Shocking incident. Wishing him a speedy recovery.

Maybe not the occasion, but Ganguly in last year or so has only tarnished his legacy by becoming a BJP stooge and walking in the shadow of Jay Shah ( Who the hell is he anyway) with folded hands.

This is not the Ganguly I want to remember. This is the version of Ganguly that makes me want to forget the legendary captain of India I remember him for.

Dada needs to pull back and reclaim his greatness.

He is shrewd. He has political aims and using fat 3 (amit shah Ambani ajit deol ) as ladder.

The quality of the reporting is rubbish.

If he just had chest pain, he didn’t have a Cardiac Arrest - that’s when your heart stops.

If he really did have a Cardiac Arrest at his age he won’t survive more than a year or two.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday spoke to BCCI president and former Indian cricket team captain Sourav Ganguly who underwent angioplasty after suffering a "mild" heart attack, and enquired about his health. Official sources said Modi also spoke to the cricket administrator's wife Dona Ganguly. Sourav Ganguly is admitted to a hospital in Kolkata. The prime minister wished him a speedy recovery. Ganguly is stable and his health parameters are normal, doctors said on Sunday. The cricket icon was diagnosed with three blocked coronary arteries on Saturday, following which a stent was inserted in one to remove the blockage.

Yes, I was curious about that bit!

The nine-member medical board of Woodlands hospital, where former India captain and current BCCI president Sourav Ganguly is admitted, concluded after their meeting on Monday that angioplasty on Ganguly's two other coronary blockages, LAD and OM2, will be done at a later stage. A special 'Sourav Ganguly Lounge' has been set up at the hospital for visitors of the BCCI president and all visitors will undergo full sanitisation before entering Ganguly's room. The former cricketer's family has been given a separate room at the hospital and family members are allowed into the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

The medical board of the hospital was scheduled to meet on Monday to decide on further treatment plans for Ganguly, who was admitted on Saturday. The board met at 11:30 am today with some specialist doctors joining on video-calling platform Zoom to review Ganguly's medical records and his clinical condition.

"The unanimous decision was that an appropriate timely excellent treatment of primary PTCA with revascularisation of RCA was rendered during the acute heart attack stage," a medical bulletin released by the hospital read.

"The discussion was also on the two other coronary blockages viz LAD and OM2 need to be treated by angioplasty in this admission vis a vis doing it at a immediate later stage.

"The consensus of the board was that deferring the angioplasty for now is deemed to be a safer option since Mr Ganguly is stable, without any chest pain and is on optimal medical management," the bulletin read.

Ganguly's family members were also present during the meeting and they were explained about the "disease process and further therapeutic plan".

The doctors treating Ganguly will be keeping constant vigil on his health situation, the bulletin said, adding that appropriate measures will be taken at home as well once Ganguly is discharged.

That's incorrect, depending upon what kind of "cardiac arrest" he had ( which I seriously doubt he had one ----agree not a great reporting ) and if it was a very brief one and no significant cardiac muscle damage was done , he can have quite a normal life if continue to follow healthy diet and life style .

They angioplastied his RCA , right coronary artery ( probably put a stent ), which seems to be the most effected one causing slow heart rate or a very brief heart block ( RCA supplies blood to the nodes which regulates the heart rhythm ) . His other heart arteries LAD and OM2 are also have some narrowing , but probably not to the critical level, hence they decided to do the procedure later. Overall his condition does not look bad enough to require a bypass.

I think he will be OK and will be able to continue his regular work, without any restriction in 2-3 weeks.

I know plenty of people who had this procedure done 20-30 years ago and still doing fine .

His Ecg showed infero lateral wall ischaemia. I suspect his black out was due to slow heart rate due to RCA blockage(90-95%). He had a primary angioplasty so they only pit a drug eluting stent in his RCA as that was causing the immediate affect.

The other two arteries also have significant blockage, but CABG has been ruled out for the time being, and he may have two more stents inserted. That decision will be taken later. If all goes well he is scheduled to be discharged on Wednesday.

He has no comorbidities.

PS: A LAD narrowing probably wont be left just like that.

Is Ganguli a smoker ? Most commonly heart attack at this age happens to diabetics or smokers, or people with really bad family history.

India legend Sourav Ganguly has been declared fit after undergoing angioplasty following a mild heart attack last week. However, the current BCCI president has decided to stay back in the hospital by a day and therefore will be discharged only on Thursday.

Woodlands Hospital, where Ganguly is admitted, released a statement on Wednesday confirming that the former India captain is doing well.

“Sourav Ganguly who is admitted here is doing well. He is clinically fit. He wanted to stay back in the hospital for one more today so he will go home tomorrow,” the hospital said in a statement.

This is the problem which most Indians experience at some point of their time. That is, the blockage in the coronary. Did he have heart damage? No. He had a blockage and he was getting some discomfort, but at the right time he landed in the right hospital and he had the right treatment. So, his heart is today as strong as it was when Sourav was 20 years old.”

Ganguly was diagnosed with the ‘Triple vessel disease’ after a mild heart attack on Saturday for which he underwent angioplasty. He though may have to undergo a second angioplasty at a later stage.

Renowned cardiac surgeon Dr Devi Shetty, who was part of the team of doctors attending Ganguly, said his hearth hasn’t suffered any damage and is as healthy as when he was 20 years old.

“This is the problem which most Indians experience at some point of their time. That is, the blockage in the coronary. Did he have heart damage? No. He had a blockage and he was getting some discomfort, but at the right time he landed in the right hospital and he had the right treatment. So, his heart is today as strong as it was when Sourav was 20 years old,” Shetty said.

Ganguly was working out at his residence when he suffered a sudden blackout.

“Sourav’s incident has shaken the world. People think that a 48-year-old man, athletic like Sourav, who doesn’t drink, doesn’t smoke, has no vices, a fit man how can he ever develop heart attack? This is the true reality of India. The kind of lifestyle we live, irrespective of how strict with your lifestyle, irrespective of how athletic you are, you can still develop a heart attack if you don’t undergo a preventive checkup at regular intervals,” Shetty said.

Praise be to Allah!
Glad his procedure is done well. Get well soon Dada!

Indian cricket chief Sourav Ganguly left hospital on Thursday as a cooking oil company withdrew adverts featuring him because of the heart attack he suffered.

Hundreds of youths gathered outside the hospital as the 48-year-old walked out accompanied by his wife Dona.

"I am absolutely fine and hope that I will resume my work soon," the Board of Control for Cricket in India president and former national captain told reporters.

"I also hope to fly soon," he added.

Ganguly suffered a heart attack while working out in a gym on Saturday and was rushed to hospital where he underwent an angioplasty operation.

"His heart today is as strong as it was when Sourav was 20 years old," cardiac surgeon Devi Shetty told reporters.

"Sourav can participate in a marathon, fly a plane, or even get back to cricket if he wants without this event being any setback."

But a series of cooking oil adverts featuring the cricket icon have been pulled off the air because of the incident. Ganguly says in the adverts that the oils are "heart healthy".

Social media users accused the oil brand Adani Wilmar, co-owned by Indian billionaire Gautam Adani, of making false claims through a cricket hero.

The company said it was "a very unfortunate incident and can happen with anyone" as they confirmed a halt in the commercials.

"The ricebran oil is not a medicine but only a cooking oil. There are several factors which affect heart ailments including dietary and hereditary issues," Angshu Mallick, Adani Wilmar chief executive, said in statement.

"We shall continue to work with Sourav and he will continue to be our brand ambassador. We have only taken a temporary break in our TV commercial until we again sit with Sourav and take things forward."

Ganguly retired from Test cricket in 2008 having scored 7,212 runs including 16 centuries. He also scored 11,363 runs in 311 one-day internationals.

Good to see him recovering.

Last week one of my cousin's namely Riyaz died while playing cricket. While reaching hospital, doctors declared him dead and the cause was cardiac arrest.

Sourav Ganguly admitted in hospital for the second time with heart discomfort

KOLKATA: Sourav Ganguly, BCCI President and former Indian captain was admitted to Apollo hospital on Wednesday afternoon. This is the second time in January he had to be hospitalised. Earlier this month he had complained of discomfort while exercising in his gymnasium at home and later an angioplasty was performed and a stent was inserted.

On Wednesday he had to be hospitalised as he had some discomfort from Tuesday night. He was taken to the hospital through a green corridor channel made by the policemen. However, he was seen walking out of the car to get admitted. It took nearly 25 minutes to reach the hospital from his home at Behala.

At the hospital, he was taken to the Cath Lab and an Echocardiogram was done in which some anomalies were spotted. The ECG report was not very regular, so further tests are going to be done. He has been kept under observation, doctors said.

Ganguly had blockages in the heart according to doctors and so the blockages are going to be reviewed through angiogram. The doctors want to be sure that the chest pain he suffered was due to a heart ailment.

His family members are there with him in the hospital. Abhishek Dalmia, CAB president had also been to the hospital.

Union home minister Amit Shah, concerned with Ganguly's health rang up to great more information about the latest status of Ganguly's health.

Kolkata, The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) President Sourav Ganguly has been shifted to a private room from the critical care unit and he is doing well, said the medical bulletin issued by Apollo Gleneagles Hospital on Friday.

"Sourav Ganguly has been examined by Dr. Aftab Khan and Dr. Ashwin Mehta. He is doing well. He has been shifted to a private room from the critical care unit," the medical bulletin read. On Thursday, Ganguly underwent a second round of angioplasty and two stents were inserted in coronary arteries.

"Dr Aftab Khan and the team comprising Dr Ashwin Mehta, Dr Devi Shetty, Dr Ajit Desai, Dr Saroj Mondal, and Dr Saptarshi Basu successfully performed angioplasty on Sourav Ganguly on January 28, 2021, and two stents were placed," said the medical bulletin on Thursday. "The procedure was uneventful. Ganguly is stable and under close observation," it had added. The Woodlands Hospital had informed through a medical bulletin on Wednesday that Ganguly would be operated upon.

"He had chest discomfort today and he is taken to Apollo today. Dr Saptarshi Basu and Dr Saroj Mondal are attending. Dr Aftab Khan will do the stenting tomorrow in presence of Dr Devi Shetty," Woodlands Hospital had said.

An earlier medical bulletin issued by the Apollo Gleneagles Hospital said: "Ganguly went for a checkup of his cardiac situation on Wednesday and his vital parameters are stable."

Ganguly headed to the Apollo Hospital on Wednesday weeks after undergoing a successful angioplasty. Sources close to the former India skipper had said there was nothing to worry about. On January 2, the BCCI president was admitted to Woodlands Hospital after he had complained of chest pain. He spent about five days in the hospital before being finally discharged on January 7. After getting discharged, the former Indian skipper had thanked the medical team of Woodlands Hospital for looking after him and doing the needful procedures.

"I thank the doctors at the hospital for the treatment. I am absolutely fine. Hopefully, I will be ready to fly soon," Ganguly had told reporters. On January 6, Dr. Rupali Basu, MD, and CEO of Woodlands Hospital had said the former captain would be monitored at home on a daily basis after being discharged.

The 48-year-old would be ready for the next course of procedures or medical intervention after about two-three weeks, Dr Basu had explained while informing the reporters about the health condition of the former India captain.

Cardiologist Dr Devi Shetty had also met the medical team of nine doctors attending to Ganguly and then a further course of action was decided by the hospital. Dr Shetty had said the heart of Ganguly was as strong as it was when the former India skipper was 20-years-old.
