New Zealand and South Africa appear comfortably on course to progress from Group D into the Super Eights. Afghanistan are left ruing missed opportunities and narrow margins, now relying on unlikely favors from UAE and Canada to keep their hopes alive.
There’s also little suspense about where New Zealand and South Africa will slot into the Super Eights, as pre-tournament seedings have already mapped that out.
What could have been one of the marquee clashes of the tournament — featuring two genuine title contenders and layered with tactical intrigue — now feels somewhat deflated in terms of consequence.
That said, when two high-quality T20 sides packed with power and skill share the field, fireworks are always possible. It may still deliver a classic. But in terms of the bigger picture, there’s not a great deal at stake.
Squads:
New Zealand Squad: Tim Seifert(w), Finn Allen, Rachin Ravindra, Glenn Phillips, Mark Chapman, Daryl Mitchell, Mitchell Santner(c), James Neesham, Matt Henry, Lockie Ferguson, Jacob Duffy, Ish Sodhi, Kyle Jamieson, Devon Conway, Cole McConchie
South Africa Squad: Aiden Markram(c), Quinton de Kock(w), Ryan Rickelton, Dewald Brevis, David Miller, Tristan Stubbs, Marco Jansen, George Linde, Kagiso Rabada, Keshav Maharaj, Lungi Ngidi, Corbin Bosch, Jason Smith, Anrich Nortje, Kwena Maphaka
