South Africa (326) defeat England (165 & 149) by an innings & 12 runs to win the 1st Test at Lord's

SA well on top.

Going to need one of those famed England comebacks to have a chance in this one.

England can still beat South Africa in the first Test but "must win" day three at Lord's, according to pace bowler Stuart Broad.

The Proteas reached 289-7 at the end of day two, 124 ahead, but would be in an even stronger position without three wickets for England captain Ben Stokes.

"The game is set up really nicely," said Broad.

"We feel really positive in the changing room that we have got ourselves back in the game."

The 36-year-old added: "We feel like tomorrow is a must-win day."

Stokes' first intervention came by removing opener Sarel Erwee for 73 and Rassie van der Dussen for 19.

The double strike was part of a slide of four wickets for 50 runs after tea that left the Proteas only 45 ahead with four wickets in hand.

South Africa counter-attacked in a crucial stand of 72 from only 75 balls between Marco Jansen and Keshav Maharaj, which was eventually ended when Stokes had Maharaj caught at mid-wicket.

"We needed a couple of breakthroughs. He gave us a bit of energy and got the crowd going," said Broad, who himself had Kyle Verreynne caught behind for his 100th Test wicket at Lord's.

"Stokesy brought great theatre. Players like him put bums on seats."

England had earlier been bowled out for 165 in their first innings, so will need a vast improvement in their second in order to set South Africa a challenging target to chase.

However, Broad highlighted the easier batting conditions on day two, compared with those England encountered on Wednesday.

"When you get bowled out relatively cheaply in the first innings, you have to make it a first versus fourth innings game, so we have to try to get enough ahead that we can try to defend it," he said.

"We are going to have to have a couple of great days, but we have proved this summer that anything can happen.

"Defending anything above 150 on day four and five, you've got a chance if you can create pressure."

Kagiso Rabada took three of the England wickets to fall on Thursday morning, the pace bowler claiming 5-52 overall for a place on the Lord's honours board for the first time despite being a doubt for this Test because of an ankle injury.

"It's basically a childhood dream to be up on the Lord's honours board," he said.

"Two weeks ago, I wasn't sure if I was going to play. That's how much pain I was in. Thankfully, the medical staff have taken time out to help me out.

"When it comes to the game, I always try and do my best, no matter whether I'm feeling a niggle or not. That doesn't change."

Will have to see Bazball in third innings. England need 350+ as 200 is defendable against a very average batting side

Hope SA are prepared for that!

Would be amazing if England can win this.

Hasn't it usually been the 3rd innings where England have stuck to their guns and come out with a good score in their recent Tests?

I wonder if "Bazball" is just a better idea on a day 2/3 pitch?

Bouchball vs Bazball.....

Who will win?

It was a good toss for SA to win. Ball was hooping for SA in the pre thunderstorm humidity on Day 1.

Sunny and dry now. England will bowl out SA this morning then will have to pick up a large deficit with the bat.

Good test for “BazBall” today.

Yes indeed. It’s a learning curve for them in this match. Even if they go 0-1 down I would be confident of an England comeback in the series still. They remain a pretty good team at home.

SA bowling has been world-class in this game so Bazball may need some modifications

Weather looks good today

WICKET! Rabada c Broad b Potts 3 - South Africa 289-8

You cannot do that... Stuart Broad!!

Take a bow! The 36-year-old old-timer has just gone all Ben Stokes on us and taken an absolute stunner of a catch to dismiss Rabada in the opening over.

South Africa - 313/8.

They are leading by 148 runs. They may have batted England out of the game here, unless Bazball happens.

South Africa are all-out for 326. Lead of 161 runs.

England - 8/0 (2.2 overs).

Positive start from England.

Crawley fails again, time for him to be dropped.

England - 27/1.

Trailing by 134 runs.

England need to score around 400 to make a match out of it.

England have tried everyone in English domestic cricket. Who else can they try?

Cant keep trying same TTF if hes not improving, england will need to keep looking till they find someone.

England cannot afford to lose anymore wickets before knocking the deficit off. A key partnership.

England will have to play exceptional Bazball from here on to get back in the match. Stokes will have to lead the way to make it possible

Bazball failing here, Bairstow was just riding his luck but now gone.

Bazball worked against likes of Southee and Boult.

Hard to do Bazball against likes of Nortje.

I also think Bazball is unlikely to work against the Aussies.

I can't wait to see Nortje vs Pant. NOW that will be a mouth watering contest. Best batsman of pace currently vs one of the quickest bowlers on the scene

Indeed.

I think South Africa currently have the best Test attack. Better than Australia's.

Nortje is the fastest bowler in the world right now.
Easily clocking over 148 in test cricket.
He is wonderful to watch.

England humiliated. Stokes with egg on his face after his comments. If England play like this in the remaining series it will be back to the drawing board.

It also worked against the likes of Lord Thakur Shami Bumrah Siraj

Current partnership: 49 runs from 6.3 overs. Bazball going on.

England - 135/6. Trailing by 26 runs.

Wicket. Rabada gets Broad.

England - 143/7.

Trailing by 18 runs.

WICKET! Broad c Elgar b Rabada 35 - England 141-7

Rabada gets Broad with the slower ball, who was looking to go big down the ground but instead it falls kindly for Elgar.

Great effort from Broad!

South Africa look a side that will be playing in the next WTC final. It won't be against England though. Look to becoming a more formiddable outfit, love their bowling attack.

We may see South Africa vs Australia in the WTC final.

Pakistan can make it too if they beat both England and New Zealand at home.

Well done SA. They have dominated England in this match.

Poor performance from England.

England remain a good, solid team in home conditions. They will be back.

Damn, what a performance from Saffers! A dominant win by an innings margin.

WICKET! Anderson b Jansen 1 - England 149-all out

South Africa win by an innings and 12 runs.

Anderson misses Jansen's full delivery by a country mile with the ball striking the base of the stumps.

Congrats SA, i actually thought at start of this series they wouldnt compete because of their weak batting. But they have smashed Eng here.

The beat India 2-1, Did well in N.Z and now 1st test here in england. well done on proving me wrong.

England were blown away in quick time by the tourists. They wrap up the match by bowling the hosts out in the game for 165 and 149.

Pollock: 'Awesome foursome' attack pretty breathtaking

Former South African bowler Shaun Pollock...

"South Africa be pinching themselves. They couldn't have thought of it going any better.

"They hit the ground running. From winning the toss and making England bat first, the conditions were suitable and they used it to their great advantage.

"When they got the opportunity to bat, they made sure they got themselves a big lead and then I think the most impressive part was their performance today.

"This pitch didn't have anywhere near as much in it as it did on day one, but they still utilised conditions as best they possibly could.

"Seriously impressive. Could this be the launch of the 'awesome foursome'? It's the first time they've operated together as a bowling unit and the damage they've done is pretty breathtaking."

Strauss: It was like a deck of cards

Former England captain, Sir Andrew Strauss...

"I think we were all pretty startled to see England fold as quickly as they did.

"It was excellent bowling, but it just looked like it all happened so quickly - it was like a deck of cards in a way.

"There was this irresistible momentum behind it, which England couldn't find a way to stem.

"There certainly wasn't any digging in and trying to find a way to gradually wrestle the momentum. Before you knew it, it was all over."

England tumbled to a first defeat under Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum as South Africa shredded the hosts for 149 to win the first LV= Insurance Test by an innings and 12 runs inside three days at Lord's.

England fell victim to South Africa's potent bowling attack for the second time in the match, rolled over in 37.4 overs as the speedy Anrich Nortje (3-47) starred, after being skittled for 165 first time around following Kagiso Rabada's 5-52.

Left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj (2-35) started the slide on Friday after the hosts began their second innings trailing by 161, pinning the struggling Zak Crawley (13) and then Ollie Pope (5) lbw before lunch.

Then, after Joe Root (6) edged Lungi Nigidi to slip, Nortje had Jonny Bairstow (18), Alex Lees (35) and Ben Foakes (0) pouched by wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne in the space of nine searing deliveries to leave the home side reeling at 81-6 on a sun-kissed afternoon in the capital.

The freewheeling Stuart Broad - who had earlier wowed the crowd with a stunning one-handed catch - then dominated a 55-run stand from 45 balls with captain Stokes (20 off 28) before chipping a Rabada slower ball to mid-off.

Marco Jansen and Rabada then accounted for Potts and Stokes respectively - the former castled and the latter pouched excellently by Maharaj at mid-wicket - before Jansen cleaned up James Anderson (1) to clinch the most emphatic of results.

England's four-match winning streak since Stokes and coach McCullum took up their roles earlier this summer - a 3-0 sweep of New Zealand followed by a record-breaking victory over India - was snapped in dramatic style.

South Africa will now head to the second Test at Emirates Old Trafford from Wednesday knowing another triumph will earn them a first series victory over England, home or away, since they won 2-0 on these shores in 2012.

It's going to be annoying when this rubbish England batting unit comes to Pakistan and puts up a boatload of runs.

South Africa beat England by an innings and 12 runs inside three days to go 1-0 up in the three-match Test series and consolidate their position at the top of the ICC World Test Championship Standings.

South Africa rocked early, but put up fighting lead

What turned out to be a rosy day did not begin great for South Africa with Kagiso Rabada dismissed by a stunning catch from Stuart Broad at mid-wicket. Maco Jansen found support from Anrich Nortje, but the former couldn't complete his maiden Test fifty as he fell two runs short of the landmark.

Nrotje remained unbeaten on 28 as South Africa put up a comfortable lead after the first innings. England minimised the damage early on day three, but the same, however, would not turn true for their batting.

Dean Elgar's masterstroke

Elgar pulled a rabbit out of his hat when he gave Keshav Maharaj a bowl before the sheen had worn off the new ball. Coming in to bowl in the eighth over of England's innings, the left-arm spinner prized out two big wickets before the lunch break to put South Africa firmly in control.

Both Zak Crawley and Ollie Pope, the first innings hero, were trapped in front as South Africa piled on the pressure on the hosts.

Nortje's burst

While it was Lungi Ngidi who put South Africa well and truly ahead with the big scalp of Joe Root shortly after lunch, it was Nortje who destroyed England's hopes in the Test in a 10-ball burst that yielded three wickets and leaked zero runs.

Nortje sent back Jonny Bairstow for the second time in the Test match and then had Alex Lees and Ben Foakes dismissed next over to complete the demolition job.

South Africa's Lord's domination

South Africa sealed a victory without having to bat again as they continued their domination at Lord's since readmission. The visitors have now won five of their seven Tests at the venue since 1992, losing only once.

The win put South Africa one step closer to the ICC World Test Championship finals next year. They are on top of the standings with six wins and two losses this cycle, a win percentage of 75%. Australia and Sri Lanka follow them in the table, with England languishing at seventh spot with eight losses this cycle.

What a beat down SA gave. England should look to retire Anderson, Broad. They are just a drag on for their side.

Credit to SA though. They have been in terrific form in the recent past with everyone performing in their side.

Jack Leach is a terrible player. His spin is mediocre and batting is even worse. At least Moin Ali can bat better and has a golden arm.

That’s what Root wanted but England and their commies on Sky Sports were not having it. Especially Nasser Hussain

Elgar: Team will enjoy tonight!

South Africa captain Dean Elgar...

"Anrich Nortje's spell just broke the back of the England innings.

"He ran in with a lot of intent and anger. It was great to watch from where I was standing, and I'm sure it wasn't nice to face.

"We'll enjoy tonight I'm sure - it is Friday after all - and the next few days, soak it all in and enjoy this experience."

Stokes: Defeat not a wake-up call

England captain, Ben Stokes...

"Obviously, we're disappointed to lose - it would be silly of me to say anything different.

"But if we dive into this too much, one result in a three-match series, then we're not going to be focussed on what we've got coming ahead.

"We've got two more games to bounce back from this and we'll look to take the series 2-1.

[Does it dent your confidence in the way you play?] "Absolutely not. When we perform to what we're capable of, then we can put in some incredible performances like everybody has been able to see in the four games before this.

"This is not a wake-up call or anything like that. It's just unfortunate that we weren't able to execute in the way we wanted to this week and South Africa were just better than us."

Credit to SA bowlers they did their home work on english batsmen and bowled to a plan, something NZ didnt do early in summer.

Excellent quick bowling by SA and ugly but gritty batting.

England have all sorts of problems. Crawley can’t buy a run, Anderson is 40, Broad is 36, and they have three #11s.

If everyone was fit I would choose

Compton
Lees
Pope
66
Bairstow
Stokes
Foakes
Woakes
Robinson
Wood
Leach

That was a proper hammering for England.

South Africa were superb, almost perfect.

Great to see 4 genuine quicks dominate the opposition batters.

South african attack was ruthless. England cannot play 3 medium fast bowlers in the same team which looked glaringly predictable and innocuous.

As for young Crawley he needs to be dropped for Rory burns.

POTENT PROTEAS ATTACK SEAL INNINGS WIN IN FIRST TEST

Friday, 19 August 2022

LONDON: The Proteas produced one of their most emphatic bowling displays in recent memory to complete a brilliant innings and 12-run win over England before tea on day three of the first Test at Lord’s Cricket Ground in London on Friday.

Anrich Nortje lead the way with three wickets in a fiery post-lunch spell, with doubles for Player of the Match Kagiso Rabada (2/27), Marco Jansen (2/13) and Keshav Maharaj (2/35) as the hosts were blown away for 149 in 37.4 overs.

There was also a wicket Lungi Ngidi (1/15) on day three, completing a result that was made even more remarkable considering most of day one was washed out on account of the weather.

Across the two innings England faced only 82.4 overs, making it the third-shortest amount of time they had batted in a home Test defeat.

This was also only their fourth ever innings defeat at the ‘Home of Cricket’, the Proteas now being responsible for two of those thumping wins including the last one that came by Graeme Smith’s lead team in 2003.

Mark Boucher’s side, currently top of the ICC World Test Championship, will now take a 1-0 lead into the second match starting at Emirates Old Trafford in Manchester next Thursday.

And they were full value for their win in the series opener too.

Inspired by Rabada’s five for 52 in the first innings, they shot out England for a poor 165, before resuming on the third morning on 289 for seven.

However, they lost their three remaining wickets for just 37 despite a career-best 48 from Jansen – South Africa’s lead at the changeover nonetheless being a substantial 161.

It was then over to the bowlers once more, and after a tight opening, the early introduction of Maharaj surprised the opposition as the spinner dismissed both Zak Crawley (13) and Ollie Pope (5) cheaply.

Ngidi then removed the dangerous Joe Root for only six after lunch to leave England on 57 for three.

A fired-up Nortje was too quick for Jonny Bairstow (18) and Alex Lees (35), both edging behind to Kyle Verreynne, during a period where the speedster grabbed three wickets for no runs in 10 balls.

By that stage it was already 86 for six, and despite the best attempts of Stuart Broad (35) and Ben Stokes (20) to make the South Africans bat again, they fell short in a famous win for the tourists.

South african attack was ruthless. England cannot play 3 medium fast bowlers in the same team which looked glaringly predictable and innocuous.

Nah Rory burns is mediocre he too would have struggled instead new guys like Harry Brook and Ben Compton should be picked.

South Africa with a near perfect performance, excellent in all facets and totally deserve this win.

Their seamers all offer something slightly different, and are all quicker than this English attack who again struggled when conditions flattened out.

Should be a cracking series.

What a beat down SA gave. England should look to retire Anderson, Broad. They are just a drag on for their side.

Credit to SA though. They have been in terrific form in the recent past with everyone performing in their side.

Yep. I dont see the bigger picture in continuing with Broad and Anderson after this summer.

Well England got rather blown away there. One of their heavier home defeats in a while.

SA won a very favourable toss and this cannot be forgotten in the analysis, but aside from this, they just played much better than England in general & created sustained pressure.

Perhaps without such a good toss to win, the margin of defeat for England would perhaps not have been an innings, but SA still would have won this one. A real thumping — and they deserve great credit for a top class team performance.

England need to bounce back quickly. They are capable of doing so. They are still on LWWWW in terms of the form guide. And their key players Anderson, Root and Bairstow are unlikely to have such quiet matches again next time.

I would also suggest a few tweaks in the lineup: Crawley and Potts to take a step back, with Burns and Robinson to come in.

Looking forward to the 2nd Test.

Indeed.

I think South Africa currently have the best Test attack. Better than Australia's.

Australia never had the best pace attack. Only Cummins. Doing well in sena along doesn't make you the best. Maybe to Asians. They need to back it up in India and pakistam too. Safrica have the best attack for swing/seam conditions. Not for australia and Asia where conditions will be flatter.

I was critical of Elgar's comments, but after seeing Stokes's response, I realized that this kind of spicy trash-talking is exactly what test cricket is missing.

If anything, I'd like to see more players start running their mouth. Preferably from both teams that are playing a series together. That way we fans will always have someone to make fun of at the end of the series.

shaz619 Surely Elgar has been watching some rasslin' and working on his promos, right?

I’ve not seen what Elgar has said lol but am all for more personality in Tests!! Elgar is a smart cookie, he has won the mind games on and off the field
