completelt forgot about Gibbs. Morkel is excellent in ODI but that is such a weak tail with Morkel, Tahir and Donald there. Still, perhaps it doesn't matter since it is one days,

12th man - Morkel

I'm surprised to see quite a few mentions for Steyn, thought he was a huge underachiever in ODIs compared to his exploits in tests. Morkel and Ntini were better ODI bowlers. Thoughts anyone?

What would be your all-time South African ODI XI?

Was a bit of hard time picking XI and also picking a captain but eventually went with this:-

Smith(c)
Amla
Gibbs
Kallis
ABDV
de Kock(wkt)
Klusenar
Pollock
Ntini
Tahir
Donald

Wanted Rhodes in between at 6 but he misses out. Will be 12th man though.

A. Donald.

In subcontinent I would replace styen with Tahir

The Proteas have been a hell of an ODI team in spite of not winning a World Cup. I would rank them third only to Australia and India in terms of pedigree, and certainly ahead of England and Pakistan in spite of their World Cup triumphs.

My all time South Africa ODI XI:

QDK (wk)
Kirsten
Gibbs
Kallis
AB
Miller
Klusener
Pollock (c)
Steyn/Rabada
Donald
Tahir

This is an incredible ODI team and can beat any ODI XI in history.

No they can't. Gilchrist was a better keeper than QDK even if you rare QDK as a better batsman.

Gilly
Hayden
Ponting
Martyn
Bevan
Symonds
Lehmann
McGrath
Warne
Gillespie
Lee

This team will remain the GOAT ODI team.

Pollock had a poor World Cup record . Most of the Saffers did well in one Wirkd Cup if at all.

McGrath was terrific for 3 World Cups straight. Warne performed in KOs in 96 and 99.

Lee in 2003 and 2011.

Let's not even go to the batting side of things. Hayden's impact in 2007 was probably greater than all Saffer white ball batsmen in history.

1 change for me. I will drop Kirsten, push rest one position up and play the best SA white ball captain , Hansie Cronje at 5. This will leave us with only one accumulator, Kallis who is batting at 3 like a rock.

SA are cricketing powerhouse which had produced many talented players over the years , AbDV was a player ahead of his time so was Herschelle Gibbs and not to mention Jonty Rhodes who would have been a magnate had played in T20 era. On the other hand some of the most bemusing cricketers have also come from SA like Nanty Hayward, Roger Telemachus, Rory Kleinveldt and etc etc.

SA dominated Test cricket from mid 2000s and remain no.1 team, they also became the first team beat to beat legendary Ricky Ponting's men back in 2008 when Smith in particular was influential in their success.

SA fierce rivals are probably Australia with SA having some famous wins and other clashes over them like sandpaper etc where it mattered most Aus have the upper hand.
As far as All time XI is concerned its a daunting task knowing the rich history of solid batsmen and genuine bowlers they had

Smith c
Gibbs
Amla
Kallis
ABDV +
Jonty
Pollock
Steyn
Ntini
Donald
M Morkel
------------

Just to add agility and lift the spirit playing Jonty at 6, anyways his was a decent Test batsman the less said about the rest of the batters they are a hallmark a phenomenon in their own.
5 genuine fast bowlers and luxury of Kallis also available. This team has only one headache that is which 2 bowlers will open the bowling, Steyn and Donald anyone

Not mentioned any players which have not seen playing regardless how great they were

But this is not best Australian OD team all time.

If you play in asian conditions , they have NO spinner

Play to your strength reverse swing and low bounce will make life hell for opponents and thus towering batting lineup can survive 130 overs on a rough surface against Warne and Murali

Are you serious ? Which OD all time Team can be made without spinners? This is incomplete bowling , one dimensional.

Have no doubt that after Kuldeep, Bumrah and Shami showing their wares past few years, an India ATG XI would go toe to toe with any other. Something like - Sachin, Rohit, Kohli, KL, Dhoni, Yuvi, Kapil, Jadeja, Bumrah, Shami, Kuldeep.

But I agree with @Mamoon , the saffer ATG XI looks far more formidable than the AUS on paper.

Not sure if he makes ATG SA XI but was always a fan of QdK. He has that acha bacha vibe and look but can decimate bowling attacks on his day for big hundreds. He’s Umar Amin from Southern Africa who made it count.

All class, no slogging or hacking.

Glad he went all out this WC, wanted for him to score in the semis, oh well.

Don’t think he should be retiring at all rn… but that’s the gimmick t20 candyland era we live in…

They have got the worst team
Choker 1
Choker 2
Choker 3
Choker 4
Choker 5
Choker 6
Choker 7
Choker 8
Choker 9
Choker 10

This is the team that would do well in every icc event.

My all time SA ODI XI:

Gibbs
Quinton De Kock (wk)
Graeme Smith
Jacques Kallis
AB De Villiers
Hansie Cronje (c)
David Miller
Lance Klusener
Shaun Pollock
Imran Tahir
Allan Donald.

  1. Hashim Amla
  2. Quinton de Kock (wk)
  3. Hershelle Gibbs
  4. Jacques Kallis
  5. AB de Villiears
  6. Jonty Rhodes
  7. Hansie Cronje (captain)
  8. Lance Klusener
  9. Shaun Pollock
  10. Allan Donald
  11. Imran Tahir

Greatly balanced team with 6 bowling options,
  • Pollock
  • Donald
  • Klusener
  • Tahir
  • Kallis
  • Cronje

In my opinion, Graeme Smith was an underachiver in ODIs. Gary Kirsten was unlucky to miss out due to Hashim Amla. Faf du plessis, Mark Boucher, Mkhaya Ntini were also unlucky not to make the team.

You are a bowler short. Also, no point picking Smith if he is not captain because on batting merit, he doesn't make it to the ODI team.

My XII wii be

1. Kock+
2. Gibbs
3. Amla
4. Kallis
5. AdV
6. Miller
7. *Cronje
8. Klusner
9. Pollock
10. Donald
11. Tahir

12. Rabada (Amla)

Very good team, almost unbeatable on non Asian conditions. But, still no match for the Aussies - one man makes a lot difference.

1. Gilly+
2. Hayden
3. Ponting
4. Jones
5. Greg C

No Gibbs and no Cronje?
I would take Gibbs over Amla and Hansie over kluesner

Kallis is a proper bowler. Used to open the bowling.

When did Kallis became a genuine bowler? He was good in initial phase of his career but even there for an all time XI, he is just a 5th bowling option. So are Klusenar or Cronje. 20 overs from these three when you are up against all time XI of other teams is asking for trouble.

Kallis can bowl better than many mainstream bowlers. Check how many wickets he has (292 Test wickets and 273 ODI wickets).

Klusener was a genuine all-rounder also. I remember he took 17 wickets in 1999 WC.

My XI would have these bowlers:

Donald (10 overs)
Pollock (10 overs)
Tahir (10 overs)
Klusener (10 overs)
Kallis (10 overs)

Part-timers can chip in with a few overs in case someone is having a bad day.

His wickets tally is still comfortably less than total ODIs he played.

In World Cups, he played 32 games and has 21 wickets at avg of 43. That's a 5-6 over bowler callibre. 4 main bowlers in an all time XI is a must. Can't leave 20 overs on all rounders whose primary skills are batting. This is not a normal XI but an all time team we are talking.
